It's fun to talk about conspiracy theories but for me it's much more scary to see humans being this distorted and disconnected from reality that they see this look as beautiful. Also the kind of people that chose or let this kind of people to get most powerful positions in their country. Therein lies the real horror...

It may be apocryphal but I heard men started wearing the bottom button of their jackets unbuttoned because Henry VIII was so fat that he couldn’t get his closed over his stomach and men around followed suit so he wouldn’t be singled out and embarrassed.

I often wonder if the people who maim their faces like that truly like the look, accidentally go too far, or are just doing it to fit in with everyone around them looking like Pennywise disguising himself but his heart’s not in it.

Edit: I’ve been corrected that it wasn’t Henry VIII, but Edward VII.

Small correction: that mythical origin is attributed to Edward VII, not Henry VIII.

Not true. Check out the fashions in Georgian times. Fully buttoned jackets (so many buttons).

Edit: you'd have a better argument with George IV, not Henry. He was a portly chappy too)

Interesting story, I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually true.

But it doesn't really change much. Either they're disconnected from reality or by choosing that look, they align with and support twisted people who are disconnected from reality ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I bet there's a word for this phenomenon where as social pressure to conform increases, individuality is suppressed until it gets to the point where the result no longer resembles its original form

It's people with ageing faces getting plastic surgery and using makeup to try and look more youthful because they think that is at least better than how they looked before. It's more a reflection on how we treat old/ugly people and what people are willing to do to avoid that treatment/perception.

They are not good examples. Characters from Dead Like Me look scary sometimes, but never really uncanny. Watched that film in the cinema with my mum. Good memories...

Death Becomes Her, btw, not Dead Like Me.

There are plenty of older women who get work done and look fantastic. This is what is called “botched”

I was arguing against the idea that people 'see this look as beautiful' and pointing out it's an attempt to look beautiful. I didn't say they looked good.
