It sounds like she has a nice voice, but I am completely distracted by that fake synthetic singing accent she has adopted where certain vowel sounds are trying to sound like an Adele caricature. Inauthentic is what comes to mind.

I absolutely hate that style of singing. I've went down rabbit holes trying to identify when it actually started, because it wasn't around in the 90s. But it's been around for a while now.

Yes it was... Macy Grey

I'd argue hers was authentic.

I can see a similarity, but it's not Macy Grey. The vocal fry is not the heart of it. It's the affected weird accent from white indie girls that doesn't sound like anything.

omg, in trying to find a link to describe this, I found my answer. It's called cursive singing apparently.

I can rest in peace now that there's a wikipedia article on it.

Yes! But "Cursive Singing" is a really poor label for it.

You're right about the white indie girl accent, but I would dislike it regardless of who sings it. This singer in this video has taken the cringe cursive singing style to 11 and it's terrible.

It's awful.

Its more amy than adele, if looking at relatively recent performers. But that style is over a century old.

It's that high-larynx, kinda nasally, 1920s vaudeville, flapper vocal styling. I don't care for it either, but there's no accounting for taste.

Adele is doing a caricature of an established type of singing too. She didn't invent it.
