When you're depressed there can be this creeping feeling that happens when you're supposed to be experiencing something beautiful, like a social gathering with close friends that love you or watching the sun rise from a hot air balloon, where you notice you don't feel anything. You realize that all the beauty around isn't helping and it starts to feel sort of pointless.
So you put a smile on and say, "Yeah I'm okay!" Because it is hard to let it be true, that you could feel so gray. So dull. It feels like being gone while you're still here.
People really do care and love you and the sunrise really is beautiful and sometimes that makes it all the worse.
Edit: Let the replies in this thread be evidence of one thing, when you feel like you are by yourself and locked in the spiral just know that you are not alone. We are all in this together, truly.

This!! I remember when I was around my best friend who had clinical depression and I said: Ooh don't be sad, we will figure it out and you will be better. nd she said: Sad? I wish I was sad, I feel nothing.
Edit: Unfortunately, Lily left this world in 2018. We were both from Croatia. She fought until her very last breath, with every single atom of her strength. People say that after suicide, the grief gets divided among those who are left behind, and maybe thatâs partly true, but she also shared all the strength she had inside her with me.
After losing her, I realized that my own family was deeply toxic, so in a way, she actually saved me. We were best friends for 15 beautiful years and lived together for the last 4. Toward the end, she would sometimes try to push me away and tell me to leave the apartment or her life, but whenever I stayed and just sat with her in silence, she would look at me and whispper thank you.
Depression and Cptsd are such horribly cruel, heavy conditions. It makes it even harder that here in Croatia and across the Balkans, mental health is still stigmatized and rarely talked about compared to the rest of the world.
Now she is up there somewhere, nd as long as I am breathing, she is still here. She is in my thoughts every single day. I still see parts of her in cats,(which she loved so muuchh) wind when it blows, in the sea, and in the seagulls on the shore. All thatâs left now is pure, deep gratitude for every laugh we shared, every single moment, every adventure, and all of our trips. đ My Ljiljana

Fuuudge, this is feeling Ive been getting and its getting worse. I assumed couldnât be depressed because I am not crying in bed, and I go to work, which I like and am good and I have great friends and family. Havenât felt joy or excitement in a long time. Kind of crazy to put into words, as I am trying to figure stuff out. I am asking for help though, which is very hard for me to do, but that fear has put me in a crisis. Thanks for the anecdote that somehow really helped me

Persistent emotional numbness is so rough on your brain. The mental exhaustion makes the depression harder to cope with. Life feels so draining
Look for the signs, seek medical help and understand that it is very common and there is help and support

u/kymberlie 7d ago
If possible, see a therapist. Psychology Today (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us) is a great way to see who you match with, recommended by my own therapist for a friend. Therapy has been a life changer for me.
Best of luck to you, internet friend. I see you and care about you. đŤđ

Yeah, same here. I took the step and asked for professional help when every tool, every rope, every car seemed to be a reasonable way out. I acted on that realization, not a feeling. Numbness is still there, so are sparks of joy and sadness. After a couple if sessions it still feels pointless but hey, there's that next appointment to attend. And the next. And the next.
At least it's something. You wouldn't try and operate on yourself, would you? If you had to remove your appendix or something. So don't feel weird for getting help with mind and heart. We are not hopeless, we just need help.

i appreciate this. this is why âcheck on your friendsâ rhetoric doesnât really work. if that was a cure for suicide a lot less people would be committing suicide. iâd argue majority of the time when someone does end their own life it is because they are experiencing the world in a way many of us cannot even comprehend. âchecking on your friendsâ doesnât not even scratch the surface to the solution of severe mental health. itâs like telling someone to cure a friends cancer by checking on them. my brother ended his life and we didnât publicly tell people because we didnât want this rhetoric spewed back at me and my family. âwhy didnât you check on himâ you think we didnât spend 15 years going to doctor after doctor to try to help him. we exhausted everything at our disposal. he also used to say he would kill himself if he didnât get what he wanted and my family still obliged him. he still fucking did it. he was so severely mentally ill and someone not capable of living here. i wish he didnât do it of course but to view it as so curable is a privilege i envy. how simple of a solution.
anyway sorry for ranting and taking this to a deeper level. with RJâs passing itâs started to kick up some emotion.

I was about to say something like this! In the UK getting help is next to impossible there are so many hurdles and when you are already struggling and everything is super heavy, advocating for yourself and overcoming those hurdles to get help is too much. It feels like itâs on purpose to keep from having to deal with a sad person, British people donât do emotions.
When Iâm in this place I never tell anyone because I know I canât get help and I know no one wants to deal with my sadness and the system has made it clear it doesnât care at least not until Iâm dead and then suddenly everyone would have done this or that to have helped me. Itâs like screaming into the void then being gaslit about it.

One of my favorite comics is this big, heavy, comedy-so-dirty-your-mama-would-cry type and he told a story that while working as a small role on the set of what became a massive blockbuster movie in the early 2000âs, out of all the actors, crew, etc., the person he ended up liking the most was this like 7 year old girl who also had a tiny role (he got close with her dad, one of her parents were always on set before you guys get all Nickelodeon on me). He still stays in touch with her like 20 years later to see how she and her family are doing.Â

Sometimes a simple âAre you okay?â can mean everything
Our teen recently shared this with us. We often ask how they're doing, what the high/low point of their day, and other check-in stuff, but the way their brain is wired, sometimes we need to ask "Are you ok?". Not that they're not in a good place, but they just need something that triggers a specific response. While my brain doesn't work like that, it was definitely eye-opening to consider.

This is an AI bot account.
Notice how it uses the unnatural ââ double quotation marks instead of "" and how it comments a generic short comment.
Its previous comments have several traits like - the ChatGPT "It's not that, it's this" sentence structure, double quotation marks, repetitive identical comments (including this comment), and of course, oxford commas and lacking imperfections/lingo/patterns of human comments.
"Youâre not a useless broken lump. Youâre a person..", "You deserved the truth.. not a series of painful surprises."
These bots thrive in relationship tea communities like GirlDinnerDiaries, AmIOverreacting, Marriage etc where its easy to process the tea, and spit out a generic comment that follows the usual tropes.

u/Akumetsu33 8d ago
You do know they train on comments like yours to improve, so ironically you're helping bots in some way but I still support calling bots out.

Nah, please dont say he "looks sad" that's counterproductive to the mission we're trying to accomplish. The friend was joking and was saying he looked frightened by the height.
Thats the issue. People are in the darkest moments with the biggest smile or at the "happiest" times in their life, right before they make that decision. You can never just notice it. Thats what depression means.
Let this be a lesson that you never can predict what someone will do as you never know just what they're going through.

Some even get more lifely because they made their choice.
Days before they take their own lifes they may suddenly smile more, look better and look happy. For some a sign that they are improving, while it's actually the opposite.
They made their choice to go through with it and set a time and date.
Giving them peace of mind that there problems will be over in due time if they succeed.RIP, and prayers to the family.

My younger brother killed himself 2 years ago. Not long before, he suddenly wanted our mom to teach him how to cook, he made doctor/dentist appointments for himself because he wanted to get on top of his health, and he deep cleaned his room. It was like one last rally before taking his leave.
He never spoke about being depressed and was always very closed off about what was going on in his life, so we didnât know there was a serious problem. It wasnât for lack of trying on our part, we just couldnât get him to open up. Hindsight is 20/20 though. His death came out of nowhere and shocked us beyond belief. He cleaned his room, unplugged his mini fridge, wiped all of his hard drives/phone/social media accounts (besides twitter, because he scheduled a post for 3 days after his death that was basically his suicide note). Drove 3 states away and jumped off a 19 story hotel balcony. His note said he wasnât sad or upset and nothing tragic happened, he was just done here. The intentionality and planning that went into it was and still is really difficult to deal with.

A very close family friend of mine committed suicide when I was a teenager. He was with my family earlier that night. He drove my sister home that night. My family replayed it a thousand times in our heads trying to figure out if there was any sign we could have picked up on. No one can think of anything. He left our house, drove to an empty lot, called his girlfriend, had a fight with her, and shot himself. He was his normal cheery self that night.
It fucking sucks knowing that we were right there, and we couldn't do anything to help him.

Depression fucking sucks. I empathize with him completely. On the outside, I have everything going for me. Wife, kids, dogs, house, a middle-class lifestyle, debt that is totally under control. But when I tried going off my meds earlier this year to see if I could handle it, I could not. Did ok for 5 months and then just fell off a cliff. All I thought about was taking an early exit. Wife pushed me to get back on them, and I am doing a lot better.
RIP Mr. Mitte. Hope you have found happiness.

u/yellowlinedpaper 8d ago
After 2 years of Covid and being a nurse I couldnât stop seeing a cliff. It was always there. Sometimes it was closer and I never wanted to jump, but it was always there. I tried everything, it was always there.
Finally took a week and just went to visit my parents. I did nothing but hang out. No kids, no laundry, no chores, just focused on breathing and what made me less sad.
I was a work in progress the best year but taking that time, selfishly taking that time, was exactly what I needed.
I hope youâve learned to take and not just give. You deserve it and your loved ones want that for you

You arenât a failure. You listened to your wife when it mattered and are still here with your family. That is what truly matters. I love my husband unconditionally when I married him, and I love him through his fight with depression and PTSD. I always tell him if he doesnât feel right tell me. Medications sometimes need to be changed or adjusted. Sometimes the partner on the outside sees something that you miss in the downward spiral. Itâs important to have those conversations and that the listener doesnât weaponize them later so that there is a safe environment

I can't speak for no-flan's journey because everyone is different, but having been in a deep depression, there is no greater apathy you could ever feel. People talk about depression making you sad, tired, etc. It's actually a state of nihilism coupled with a lack of motivation that can range from inability to pull yourself out of bed to inability to pull yourself from the void. When you reach that point, there is no helping yourself out of that hole. All you need to do is walk away from it, but you literally need someone else to lift your leg to make that first step for you.
Don't quit nicotine twenty eight times, kiddos, especially after picking it up again during a couple years of familial hardship. One of those times your body's gonna throw an absolute fit over losing its external dopamine source.

Yes the call of the void is widespread, however speaking from experience, itâs a bit different when youâre actively suicidal. It can be triggering, the feeling can last for days, every thought coated by it. Whereas a healthy brain will feel the call of the void and then shake it off when the situation ends, it will be back in the present, feeling safe, it moves on to thinking about the next thing, like dinner.

Also struggled with depression my entire life, I remember going on my dream cruise to Iceland for my birthday a few years ago and I couldn't pull myself out of the bathroom cause I was crying so hard. Absolutely wanted to throw myself overboard.
You learn to keep up the image of appearing alright even if you're not, because you don't want to cause a scene. You don't want to draw attention to yourself, you're not wanting to reach out for help, you're just coping with the reality of existential dread and realizing all of this is for nothing... But you have to find some kind of meaning in all of the happening in the world, cause that's all that we are.

Chester is one of the worst examples you could have used. He was abused and went through a shit life and wrote very clearly in his lyrics about his pain and hopelessness.
Itâs very obviously a sign that things are not going well. He didnât just make random sad lyrics up lmao. Everyone just assumed he would be okay bc his music was popular and he was famous
His 15+ years of sad lyrics were a reflection of his deep issues. You can even see the progression of his emotions through his albums. First itâs all frustration and isolation. Eventually he starts writing about how things are too much to bear, how to keep moving on even if heâs gone, etc.
Leave out all the rest? Heavy?
There are so many examples of this he might as well have told everyone, âI canât hold on any longer and donât be sad when people die, even meâ.
Itâs just relatable lyrics to peopleâs sadness so people take it as art from a famous person.

You simply cannot say he looks 'visibly exhausted and sad' here.
Asking your friends if they are okay is great - we all need to do more of it - but shoehorning a narrative into a video sets a dangerous precedent and it's also pretty unfair on everyone involved in the video.

A video of a guy in a hot air balloon as well, as if it isn't just terrifying being 2000ft in the air in a wicker basket with a gas fire strapped to it.

Especially when considering he was probably up at 3:30 in the morning or earlier. You go early early early for balloon fiesta

Lots of arm chair psychologists here, overlooking the fact that theyâre in a gd hot air balloon. Obviously the man was unwell but you canât look at someone who is thousands of feet in the air, in a wicker basket controlled by fire, and psychoanalyze their depression.Â

u/Preserved_Killick8 8d ago
also he doesnât even look that sad?

Yeah and all the commentary from the other guy is about the fact he's assumed to be afraid of heights, not depression. This whole post is really gross

As someone who suffered with depression and burnout, I recognised his face there. You learn to get pretty good at putting on a smiley happy mask around people but occasionally it slips.
I remember hours of vacant staring, that almost slack mouth look where your brain just isnât processing what it needs to be doing to look normal.
Unfortunately I fortunately, never came anywhere near considering suicide, but those days were very very lonely. I had my wife and kids around me, but I was so alone.
Itâs completely true that you never know what someone is going through.
If you constantly feel low or I worried that you might do something, please go talk to someone
Edit: a very unfortunate typo

Absolutely playing Captain Hindsight here, but you can see he doesn't look settled or happy here. He's doing his best, but those facial reactions aren't genuine. I've seen interviews from years ago when he was (seemingly) genuinely happy and he looked a lot different. He looks stiff and uncomfortable here. He's clearly not thinking about what's happening at hand.
You can learn to hide it really well. Many take it as a source of pride until it finally breaks. People say they care, but for suicidal people that doesn't matter, because you think of those same people apparently caring are "fake" or "not genuine". Add financial pressure and you're most likely cooked as a person prone to depression in the first place. You will never feel balanced the same way others apparently do, and then you add something external to it, and you want to die.
Because it's reddit and anonymous I want to share a story I still have never told my friends because I hope to god they never find my actual account. I wanted to kill myself twice, the first time I backed out without any intervention, and the 2nd resulted in a hospital visit.
The first time it was a 4th of July party in my late teens and I had been going through the ringer between work, class, and personal relationships. I separated from the party I was with and took a hike into the woods where I knew there was a cliff that would absolutely kill me. By the time I started to get there it was starting to get dark but no one was there. I felt hopeless because I was falling behind on my studies, had no clue what to do in life as I was switching majors without any actual clue of what I wanted to do, and was still a virgin who took that WAY more seriously than it needed to be.
I walked to the edge of the cliff and sat there for an hour pondering why I was there. I used self-hatred to push me towards it, and I had one foot hanging off the ledge before natural instinct called me back because (in my mind at the time, "I was a pussy"). It was even worse when walking back and I realized multiple people called me trying to desperately figure out where I was. That's when I realized I actually had friends who cared. One of my poor friends ran up and down the street looking for me, and I felt selfish. He didn't need to do that, and could've just thought I went off to do my own thing, but he knew something was wrong. I will always respect him for that, and that alone gave me strength to be a better person for years following.
The 2nd time was in my mid 20's and was an actual attempt. I hammered an insane amount of vodka, took enough sleeping pills that should probably kill you, yet woke up in a hospital wondering what the fuck happened. I had finally started to feel like my life was going good until the rug got pulled from under me, along with a collapsing romantic relationship, and I folded back to the same person I was 5-6 years before. Except this time I felt serious about it.
I'm sharing this for anyone who might have a similar mindset, not because I think it's the right idea. Life is hard, we're trying, but please don't think you are alone, as cliche as that sounds. You just haven't found the right people for you yet, and that goes beyond therapy. I hope to meet you someday, because I can guarantee to you that we have a lot in common.

u/InfiniteWaffles58364 8d ago
Glad you're still here and I hope you stay with us for a long while. We can't leave yet, there's too much work to do and the world is in desperate need of truly good people.
I almost ended it myself. Had just escaped an abusive relationship that caused a miscarriage and lost my good job, poor health, lifelong depression and a bunch of other things came to a head, so I resolved to drive out to my favorite place in the mountains and end it peacefully watching the creek from my car after taking a bunch of sleeping pills
You know what saved me? Right as I was about to start chugging, 4 adorable teeny weeny puppies came racing down the road towards me! They came running and all jumped into my car, being adorable and sweet. One fell asleep in the passenger seat next to me and the others curled up in the back.
I cried and cried and cried. I couldn't leave now, there are too many animals who need good people looking out for them. Like these puppies. I had to help them get home! So we drove down the road in the direction from which they came, all the pups in tow, stopped at the next house and opened the door. They all went bounding up to farm, and I went back to the couch I was sleeping on at my aunts house and decided not to give up.
Now I've got 3 kids living on top of a mountain in my dream house and I care for the stray cats and the wild birds in the neighborhood. I plant pollinator flowers and give hummingbirds fresh homemade nectar every 3 days.
I often fall asleep under a pile of strays on my porch couch lol. But I found my purpose. And I'm actually grateful that the pain I endured shaped me into who I am. Wish it could've been done another way without so much turbulence in my younger years, but I'm proud of who I've become.
You should be, too!

I donât think itâs always that easy. A friend of mine killed himself. I met him at the bar we frequented and he was in an extra great mood, just genuinely happy. We laughed and talked all night long and went our separate ways. When he walked inside after getting home, he put a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. We werenât drunk either, we only had two beers a piece that night.
Apparently thatâs not uncommon at all either, once they have a plan set some people are happy about it and in a much better mood than normal and give zero indications something is amiss. A grief therapist explained that to me because I felt so incredibly guilty that I hadnât noticed a single thing wrong or off about him that night.

People with depression planning to commit suicide and have a date set in their mind are happy after deciding on the date. In their mind, they have a goal set and know that on that date all their burdens will be gone. So they are at peace and therefore happy
When you know someone is depressed and they seem genuinely happy, the happiness is genuine yes but it is a scary sign. They know something you donât- they plan on checking out soon.
5
u/clookie1232 8d ago
This is a bit of an exaggeration. Not happy. Definitely not happy. Preeminently relieved is a better word. The difference between where you are and where youâll need to be in order to feel relief is what causes the pain. Like having a big test that youâre not prepared for. That feeling of âthereâs no way Iâm gonna be able to do this. Thereâs no way Iâll pass.â Itâs that feeling but applied to life. Most students take the test anyways but some choose to drop out. If youâve ever dropped a class or dropped out of school, youâll know that you donât feel happy especially if there are others around you who were rooting for your success. But you still feel this sense of relief that you no longer have to study, take tests, show up to class. You feel this sense of empty freedom. Like, the pain has a timeline that you can see the end of.
13
u/Darkspire303 8d ago
It's scary, because once someone really decides, often what you see is this huge burst of energy and relief. They look happy and well. They'll celebrate with you. Then they will go home and do something like that. I know people who don't own firearms specifically because it is so easy to quickly and impulsively use them. But even so, if someone really wants to, they will.

There's also the other side when someone who has been down for a long time genuinely has a very happy night and that's the thing that makes them decide it's over. You found that joy one more time and can't imagine going back to life without it. You go out on top. Every time I have an amazing night that thought hits the back of my head.

Iâm so sorry to hear that friend. That sounds rough.
I hope youâre in a better spot. Go easy on yourself. These things can be really unexpected. As someone who had spent the better part of their adult life with severe depression, some of us are pretty good at masking things with feigned happiness, joy, levity.
I canât speak on behalf of anyone else, but sometimes itâs easy to disassociate moments of socialisation (I do love and appreciate my friends) and the very separate and personal moment of ideation thatâd play out in my mind. Itâs absolutely not on anyone else to notice.
Sending you a big hug!

He doesn't look hexausted at all and his friend seems to just (friendly) teasing him, maybe he seems a bit stoned if anything.
I hate it when people interpret all kinds of shit into videos and images after events like this. The sad truth is that people that seem happy when doing stuff with their friends, family or coworker can still be very depressed when alone or in general.

u/BecauseImGod 8d ago
I said this before in another post. People that struggle with depression the worst, are the ones that hide it the best. Look at Robin Williams for example. Super happy looking guy (on the outside). I have been dealing with it for almost 40 years. My wife is the only one that truly knows how bad it is.

I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci."

I've lived with depression my whole life and I don't hide it well. This is a nonsenical generalization that I've seen get repeated on the internet for as long as I can remember. Some people hide it well, some don't. Treat everybody kindly and with respect. Check in on your friends. Don't turn depression into a competition.

u/em_paris 8d ago
Yes, this is a horrible take. I understand the person means well, but the worst depression can look many ways. Some hide it better and some don't. The severity of the depression has nothing to do with how well someone hides it, and it's not a magic metric. There are understandable reasons why nobody knowing you're depressed actually isolates you further and can push you to feel more despair, but the same can happen for people knowing you are depressed and living with that shame. It's just not anything to compare in any way.

Idk why people keep trying to use Robin Williams as an example here when his suicide was not caused by depression, but rather being diagnosed with a really terrible progressive disease and seeing the symptoms start to worsen and going, "nah, gonna choose to skip."
7
u/Independent_War_4456 8d ago
Its a really annoying comparison. No amount of wealth or healthcare or support would've helped.

Some people don't know about his condition because of initial news being incomplete or just fake rumours.Unfortunately I also thought it was depression that was the cause of his death only later I found out he had been diagnosed with serious illness that he probably decided, he doesn't want his legacy to be tarnished with being unrecognizable to himself and outside world.

Yeah he's become like Tesla and a few others on this site whether they're often cited as an example that isn't really true. Robin may have been able to hide his depression over the years but he wouldn't have been able to hide the Dementia/hallucinations and distress.
Either way, it's very parasocial. You see a couple minutes of candid videos of celebrities and think you can deduce how they were most of the time. It's like me deciding I know how much you hate your career based on a reddit comment

Man the Robin Williams misinformation has really cemented itself. Williams had a brain disease, which made him depressed because he was losing cognitive functions to the point he felt he couldn't function. It wasn't just depressed for years and then he took the decision. There was a very clear reason why.

Living with a chronic illness is so fucking lonely experience. No-one really sees the cross you're bearing day after day, while you keep up a palatable persona in public.
It's like you're living life in hard mode without you having any say in it. It really mentally eats you alive if you don't have a very solid support network and/or partner.
I've only had mine for 7 years and I've been on the fence twice. I can understand his decision. I only hope he finally found his peace
8
u/Harde_Kassei 8d ago

Maybe he was exhausted. Maybe he was afraid of heights. Maybe he was annoyed his friend was too busy filming them instead of actually talking and connecting. Maybe he was fine. We don't know what was going through his head in the days or weeks leading up to this and we never will. We also aren't owed that knowledge and shouldnt just be making conclusions based on what we think happened because, like I said, we don't know and never will. But if there is anything to learn from this, it's that we need to reach out and check on each other because our loved ones are all we really have in this world.

In a nutshell: he was young (17 or 18) and wanted to hire a professional financial manager to help him. He wrote her checks for taxes and she pocketed it and gave him fake tax return filings. When IRS finally caught up to him he owed back taxes, penalties, fees, etc that totaled more than his profit from Breaking Bad. Didnât wanna take her to court and fight a lengthy expensive legal battle. Took like 10 years to pay off the debts.
