Also, Twister was (is) my favorite movie and I’d wanted to be a storm chaser too!! And also a railroad conductor, which I actually did become for a while.
Very fun! But occasionally grueling and not conducive to family life. All hours, all weather, lots of walking, you get dirty pretty regularly. Paid fairly well, but those snowy, freezing, winter days (I worked in Denver, USA) were tough.
But as a boyhood dream, absolutely so cool! Getting to climb on locomotives and ride them for work was surreal. I’ll never forget my first time aboard on the road, doing 70 mph through the Rockies.
I wanted to be a zookeeper, then you learn about how much college you need, how few jobs there are at accredited institutions, and how shit the pay is and the uneven quality of life
same! i was told i would need to take 2 straight years of nothing but math courses at community college to get a biology degree for zookeeping, just to start with. i'm awful at math. and they said how few jobs there were to go around on top of that, so i gave it up
I’m a wildlife biologist, which isn’t the same but it has similar requirements. I actually didn’t have to take a ton of math (I’m also not great at it), but I did have to take stuff like chemistry and physics that are super math heavy.
So I would like to add that my first profession after high school was being a paramedic. I also joined a search and rescue team. I just wanted to save people.....
Been a wild ride for sure. First job at 14 working at a nursery (children, not plants), paramedic, brewmaster, warehouse worker, now working in municipal water.
I’ve been doing it for about 4 years now and really enjoy it. It’s a lot to learn and if you have a good group at your plant it can be fun. Even if not you’ll eventually have a decent amount of time to yourself and that’s also not bad.
If you’re a very extroverted personality it could be challenging, because there are a lot of shifts you’ll be alone. That’s after you’re fully trained and licensed.
Otherwise the time can be really nice if you don’t have trouble entertaining yourself.
That’s gonna be a pretty small plant but you’ll probably be trained up in maintenance of pumps and valves so you’ll probably have a decent amount to do. Plus there’s grabbing samples and doing labs which are the perfect time to listen to podcasts or whatever
Wtf? Seriously. Let's just ban stupid shit. We're really living up to the millenial trope huh.
As for your question. I wanted to be an archaeologist. I was obsessed with history, and media depicting Lara Croft, Indiana Jones, etc. I ended up in IT. It's ok. I don't like it and I don't hate it. If I could quit, money is not an object, I'd become a park ranger.
I wanted to be a park ranger when I was in high school but never followed through because I had too much anxiety. Kinda wish I’d gone through with it and gotten a Forestry degree.
Marine biologist but alas, drugs got in the way- small small town, truly nothing else to do other than get pregnant or drugs, I chose drugs. Tbh I don’t know anyone from my class who went on and actually did what the originally planned or even went and got degrees for, there’s no jobs
I think most people don't actually achieve what they want when they are young. Its not necessarily bad, just how life goes sometimes. What are you up to now?
Currently a CNA/med aide, I was an RBT for like 3yrs but burnout was really bad because there’s no support with that job, I specialized in working in day programs for about 6yrs with adult with disabilities, transitioned to RBT working with kids, the kids BURNT ME OUT. But I also have an autistic kiddo myself, so I was never away from the high stress environments. But right now I’m trying to get disability, I vomit every day and have been since pregnancy and I’m struggling to find a place willing to hire and work around my accommodations (no one wants to work with someone who’s vomiting multiple times throughout the day)
Successful actress. It’s what I dreamed of my whole childhood, but years of severe abuse and being told, demanded, being controlled and left no choice for years, and telling me that I’d fail and should go in another direction made me give that up. Only no that I’m a lot older do I see how wrong they were and that I could have done it. I often wonder if I hadn’t had a viciously evil physically, verbally, emotionally and disgustingly manipulative mother and absent disinterested father who abandoned us to her (even though he new she was a violet snake like maniac)… what my life could have been.
Thanks. Sorry i probably wasn’t clear. I wash I’d pursued it and become one. Until did what I was browbeat to do for years. I’ve gone nonckntact with my family, but I realize I ended up with a man who never really respected or cared about my feelings needs and wishes in any display of behavior. I have two beautiful children who I love more than anything in the world. I can’t leave for reasons too complicated to explain here. I’ve realized over time. Had I been taught growing up that I had value, I’d have valued myself more to be treated better (but comparatively it was better than been beaten). I spend each day telling my kids how much they mean to me, that they’re special, importable valuable little people who can anything they want in life that they put their minds to and brings them joy. That they’re special should always know their value and worth.
At 12, probably either an author or a teacher. I'm an infectious disease doctor now. Golden ticket--I'd probably be chief medical examiner for a county somewhere.
When I was 12 I wanted to be a geologist or paleontologist.
That goal stuck with me all the way to freshman year of college, where I learned that I was not cut out for the amount of math needed for any science degree.
I ended up in journalism/production program and now I’m in sales and marketing.
I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now without my education and training and I’m so grateful for what I ended up doing
I wanted to be a writer. Then an actress. Then... both! I even dual-majored in college.
Today, I'm a formula grants consultant for a state agency. The other stuff I kept as hobbies, though I haven't been on stage since the COVID lockdowns.
I wanted to be a storm chaser too. By 12 I wanted to be a teacher. Certified to work with preschoolers but my disabilities led me to be a stay at home mom. Now that they're not little anymore I would settle for a working brain.
How dare your original post not be about pogs or moon shoes? 😠
But as for the question, I wanted to get into videogame development, but after hearing about what it's really like, I figured it's probably for the best that I didn't get into that. Currently, I work as a welder. I'm not making as much as colleges/tech schools pretend you'll start at (*cough Western Welding Academy) but it's alright. It's more than most jobs here anyways. But given a chance to do what I want? Something more computer based. Maybe working IT (absolutely NOT as a call center rep) or computer forensics or something like that. But depression isn't going to let that happen.
My dad was a computer programmer, went to UT when you still used a roll a dex to write a program. He finally retired about two years ago. He loved it if it was only about solving issues with currently released software. He also wrote his own 1099 service software.
I wanted to be a marine biologist after my first visit to Alaska as a child and swing amazed at the majesty of the state and wildlife in general. I’m now a property tax director who was just fired for giving my professional opinion as the only ptax professional at a REIT. I should have been focused on the fish instead I joined an unforgiving bait ball.
I wanted to be an ER doctor after watching the first season of ER on NBC. Ended up an ER nurse, and now an ICU nurse practitioner. Pretty fricken close, I say. Probably wouldn’t change much.
I think at 12 I wanted to be a comic book artist. I think if I could snap my fingers now I'd want to be a bar/ boardgame store owner. I really like hosting and gaming and that seems like the best way to do that.
When I was 12, I wanted to join the Air Force and do space things.
So I joined the Air Force and did space things. Now I am in the Space Force and doing space things. If given a golden ticket, I would give it to someone else because I apparently already got mine.
I wanted to do nothing but get paid.
I have one of those imaginary WFH jobs where we just send emails, circle back, put pins in it etc.
Close enough lol
