The stories were very mid, but those pictures made us feel like we were reading at a rated R level.

u/Pale-Weather640 7h ago

I see you, OP.

But......

44

u/FibroMancer 7h ago

Same author! Obviously different illustrator lol. Thses guys were my favorite from this book.

9

u/queenquirk 3h ago

This teeth story freaked me out so much. This and the ribbon story are the main ones I can remember from the book.

19

u/elFistoFucko 6h ago

The ribbon, I can feel it in my throat again.

7

u/Jenniehoff90 5h ago

My 6yo was obsessed with this book this summer and The Green Ribbon was her favorite story in it. 😬

2

u/atimetochill 3h ago

Beat me to it 😂😂😂

•

u/knittedgalaxy 1h ago

This is what my 9 year old daughter asked to be for Halloween. I did a low slow chuckle and asked her if she knew the story. She did, but from some stupid YTer who just lip synced someone reading the story! Girl......smh..... Girl...... Needless to say, her older millennial mother helped her find the right costume!

•

u/smcgrg 49m ago

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT REMOVE THE GREEN RIBBON.

u/eyloi 5h ago

"Hey Nick, you're about 7-8 years old, yeah? Let me show you this book cover right before you go to sleep."

18

u/Gerudo_Valley64 4h ago

I loved scary stories to tell in the dark, the one story about the human scarecrow guy... shivers no thanks.

ETA: It was called Harold...

9

u/HillanatorOfState 4h ago

We all had the same childhood I see.

1

u/Turkeyplague 1h ago

Now, I know you like clowns, so I got you this picture. Now you can laugh yourself to sleep.

57

u/Active_Water_8876 7h ago

I still think about the story with the spiders and the lump on the face.

16

u/EagleEyezzzzz Older Millennial 7h ago

omg me too! The lump explodes and a million baby spiders pour out!!

4

u/SgtNeilDiamond 7h ago

That story gave me a genuine phobia of insect swarms lol

35

u/Uchihagod53 Actual cannibal, Shia Labeouf 7h ago

The illustrator did a good job scaring the fuck out of me

25

u/johnsonfromsconsin 7h ago

Yes all those illustrations were so creepy. It just hit harder when you were like 10 years old.

28

u/Dazzling_Egg3962 7h ago

My brother used to open the book to this page and shove it under my door when I got in trouble and sent to my bedroom as punishment 😂😂😂😭😭😭 looking back now it’s pretty hilarious lol

3

u/labtiger2 3h ago

The things brothers come up with...

18

u/skredditt Elder Millennial 7h ago

My parents didn’t let me read this book and now I see why 😨

14

u/Clayfool9 7h ago

The illustrator went hard beyond his business. I’d tell you to check them out, they’re wonderfully unsettling.

16

u/Kris_tinnn 7h ago

This picture is the legit reason I will not look in a mirror at night when I get up to pee TO THIS DAY.

9

u/vwcam 7h ago

TO. THIS. DAY. I even hesitate saying the word “Bloody Mary” at a bar on a Saturday afternoon… I just say “gimme a bloody.”

13

u/Thamnophis660 Xennial 7h ago

I still own all 3 of them. The stories are okay, but I really enjoy Stephen Gammell's artwork. Disturbing as a kid, but I couldn't look away.

I'm considering getting a tattoo of the flying skull eyeball creature from the one story.

13

u/CreativeFedora 7h ago

So what’s a good age to introduce these books to my young kids? 😁

25

u/AL-SHEDFI 7h ago

According to child psychologists the best age is never 😇 According to Reddit (( right before bedtime )) so they learn how to sleep in your room forever 😈

6

u/Pingadecaballo_ 7h ago

how i grew up was . my parents told me if i didn’t clean up the toys , or if i was bad. the babayaga lady would come in the night and take me away

6

u/AL-SHEDFI 7h ago

You made me laugh 😂 It’s clearly an international thing. I’m the same way but only if I don’t go to bed early lol.

3

u/Old-Sun-3737 5h ago

3

u/PSYCHOsmurfZA '86 Model 4h ago

Same thing

2

u/Professional_Room_94 2h ago

This made me lol so hard

6

u/Appropriate-Bug-6467 4h ago

Don't worry like 15 years ago they changed the creepy ink pictures to something shitty.

No joke.

4

u/etherealsmog 2h ago

They did, but the millennials and Gen X buyers were so incensed they rereleased them with the originals. We definitely bought new editions with the old illustrations.

2

u/auntiesandpiper 3h ago

We found reprints of some of them with the old art at Barnes and Nobel!

I actually like the new illustrator if we’re thinking of Brett Helquist, bc his Series of Unfortunate Events art is so great and his stuff is eerie in its own right, but I also agree it wasn’t near terrifying enough in comparison.

6

u/Clayfool9 7h ago

8-10? That’s the age I was at, pretty much 2nd-3rd grade era.

4

u/elpovo 5h ago

34 years old

3

u/elFistoFucko 6h ago

I'd start with the SAW visual saga first.

2

u/donkeybraineded 7h ago

My kids are 5 and 7 and enjoy me reading them to them

•

u/hereforthecats27 33m ago

I have these in my 2nd grade classroom, but they have the new, sanitized illustrations. These kids have no idea the horror these books used to contain.

•

u/Mr_Hino 14m ago

My daughter is 8 and we introduced them to her, she loves em lol but some of the stories are a bit spooky for her

13

u/TaskmasterOfPuppets 7h ago

Target rereleased this all 3 books with original art in one new hard cover this year. Got it yesterday.

•

u/Whitediggity 21m ago

Oh dang a hardcover??

•

u/TaskmasterOfPuppets 17m ago

Yeah it was like $17.

1

u/Wet_napkins 3h ago

Mine sits proudly at the top shelf of my bookshelf. The sheer terror I got from these stories as a kid still makes me a little uneasy at night after reading a couple stories lol

11

u/Wasatchian 7h ago

I would guess almost everyone remembers this book at least elder millennials.

6

u/LeftLiner 5h ago

I've no idea what book this is and so far I can't find anyone posting the title.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz.

There were 3 volumes.

1

u/Old-Sun-3737 5h ago

Not a clue

1

u/FreezingEye 2h ago

Younger millennial here. All three were at my school.

1

u/Turkeyplague 1h ago

I'm an elder Millennial and didn't hear about the series until I was an adult and someone did that video with the blobby lady in the hospital. Goosebumps is what I got...

9

u/Mega_Pleb 7h ago

The audiobooks for the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books were excellent, read by the talented George S. Irving. My local library had these on cassette and around age 10 I checked them out a few times. They're free to download at this point.

3

u/27softtacos 4h ago

Running to my Libby app.

2

u/BendHungry3408 6h ago

You are a gift. Pure gift, you.

9

u/beaniebee11 7h ago

It is still to me, as an adult horror fan, superb horror art. It's no wonder it hit so hard in elementary school.

4

u/dasheeshblahzen 6h ago

Us older Millennials would read these and watch that creepy Tales from the Darkside on Sunday nights.

5

u/No_Contest_6496 7h ago

One time i had sleep paralysis and i swear the demon looked like this just a bit darker.

5

u/HellyOHaint Older Millennial 6h ago

For me, it was the severed head that made eye contact with the reader.

1

u/Wet_napkins 3h ago

"It's Him!" And "The Thing" for me. I would legit read the stories with pictures covered because they scared the ever living shit outta me as a kid 😂

4

u/submissionsignals 7h ago

I bought this book for my 11-year-old at Halloween last year. Her friend was over for a sleepover, so I thought it would be cool to tell stories from it. She promptly gave me a “what the fuck is this” face while her friend grimaced. Let's just say I read one story from that thing, and the next time I saw the book, it was in a random closet, on a shelf pushed waaaay back.

3

u/Impressive_Wrap_7869 4h ago

Kids are soft these days 😂

•

u/Mr_Hino 12m ago

Damn, they be scaredy cats lol my kid is 8 and she loves em

3

u/Skinny-on-the-Inside 5h ago

I just bought this book for my 9 yo nephew.

He kept bugging me to watch scary movies so we watched spooky movies like Practical Magic, Sleepy Hollow and the Others.

But he was unimpressed. I was like this is as scary as I go bud. Then my sister watched Exorcist with him and when I asked if it was scary he said well it is the scariest movie in the world. So I guess that was a yes.

Anyway I think he can handle the book.

PS when I asked my sister if she thought Exorcist was scary, she replied not really because real life is much more terrifying (she has cancer).

3

u/RobSiaHoke 7h ago

I was terrified by the illustrations; yet, I was also oddly addicted to those books

2

u/SpiralBreeze 5h ago

No, my favorite book was the one where the women takes off the green ribbon and her head falls off.  I was 5 when I read that, nothing scares me!

2

u/InternetCreative 5h ago

They were a lot scarier before I could understand the words - I had to put them away in the middle of the bookshelf just to make sure the things from the pictures wouldn't escape.

But then I read them again when I was slightly older and the whole thing went from scary to silly so quick 😊

These definitely sparked a lifetime interest in folk tales for me.

2

u/sadpandawanda 5h ago

I was irate when they changed the illustrations! I actually bought all 3 of them when Urban Outfitters sold them as a special boxed set with the original pictures restored. I want to have it when my daughter is old enough. I did the same thing when they revised Roald Dahl - bought an original boxed set to make sure she has a chance to have it.

2

u/Throwaway05464 2h ago

Just recently bought all of them! They're still creepy, and the images were THE scariest thing about the books. But they did have fun/funny stories in there too and I always liked those.

•

u/legendarysupermom 1h ago

The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out, the worms will even play Pinochle on youre snout!....to this day i never pass an opportunity in conversation to randomly start singing this poem over and over and over....always weeds out the cool kids from the stick up ur ass ones lmao

2

u/pxlmover 7h ago

The illustrations in that book have been burned in my brain for over 30 years

1

u/Nerril 7h ago

I really think the art from these books growing up influenced me more than I initially thought, especially in regards to my own art style.

1

u/SaraHoover 7h ago

I recently bought the series to relive all the spooky illustrations! (They were only a few bucks each from Thrift Books if anyone else is interested)

I just forgot how cheesy the stories were 😂

1

u/AlwaysWorkForBread 7h ago

Did this book also have the Goatman and Mothman stories in it?

1

u/Colonel_Gipper 7h ago

The ghost train conductor from Hey Arnold! scared me as a kid

1

u/weensfordayz 6h ago

Was this in the same book with the story about the person hiding in the backseat of a car? And the car behind would flash its high beams to alert the driver that someone was popping up and down in the back seat?

This face is so triggering LOL!!!

1

u/Sketch_Beast 6h ago

$@)?*/$&

You jump scared the shit out of me! I hated this picture as a kid and apparently it still gets me.

1

u/ParadoxicalFrog Zillennial (1993) 6h ago

Those books creeped me out so bad I couldn't look at them, let alone read them. Ironic, given that I grew up to be a horror fan.

1

u/strahlend_frau 6h ago

I remember getting this book at the Scholastic Book Fair lol I loved it but I also scared myself reading this as a kid.

1

u/evaj95 6h ago

My mom told me I wasn't allowed to check those books out from the library anymore because I couldn't sleep after reading them lol

1

u/Another_Road 6h ago

Quite literally this book is in my classroom library.

1

u/No-Blackberry7735 6h ago

Yes they will bc all us Millennial teachers keep the class set in our classrooms 😉

2

u/jakexmfxschoen Millennial 6h ago

This was the one that fucked me up the most. I already had a bad spider experience, so this was HORRIFYING

1

u/Gypsyrawr 5h ago

Don't worry. My seven year old son brought this one from the library last month and was excited to show me. Little did he know i have the whole collection 😅 it's in his bookshelf

1

u/Thick_Maximum7808 5h ago

This book is one of my kids favorite he read it in elementary school and loves it! To be far he’s also grown up watching horror movies with me so him liking scary stories isn’t anything crazy.

1

u/Trombygirl 5h ago

I bought this series recently specifically so I could share it with my niece when she is big enough.

1

u/LeftLiner 5h ago

No, what's the book called?

1

u/BippidiBoppetyBoob 1988 5h ago

I realize how much I really missed out on when I see posts here sometimes.

1

u/triciakickssaas 5h ago

jfc i was not prepared for this flashback jump scare

1

u/moosicaldj 5h ago

My kids will

1

u/Bigman89VR 5h ago

Yep, really wasn't expecting to see it in a book in the library in elementary school. Mid '90s

1

u/Pretty-Savings6874 4h ago

I love those books!

1

u/queenweasley 4h ago

Yep I own it. I remember checking it out in elementary school and my dad was pissed! So he told the school I wasn’t allowed to check it out anymore

1

u/SolutionSuitable00 4h ago

Straight up scary right now as an adult!

1

u/Winterlash 4h ago

That ain't harold.

1

u/BitterActuary3062 4h ago

What are all of the pictures from? They are strangely familiar

1

u/SlidePuzzleheaded357 4h ago

I think I got the first one from that paper Scholastic order thing they had us take home a couple times a year. I loved all the “scary” books, especially R.L. Stine books. I had a Goosebumps and Fear Street collection.

1

u/Warp-10-Lizard 4h ago

I thought she was pretty entertaining in "Shrek 2." What do you have against Joan Rivers anyway?

1

u/DeathMetalDiver 4h ago

Just read this to my kids tonight!

1

u/History0nerd 3h ago

Haunted me as a kid

1

u/CheezWong 3h ago

I wish I could get the entire catalog of these illustrations painted and hung on my walls. Fuck contemporary, I want to traumatize the random steak salesman that I let through my door to patronize.

1

u/queenquirk 3h ago

Yes, and out of all the pictures in all 3 books, the one that has stuck with me the most was the one chosen for this post lol.

Just want you all to know my mom just bought my 10yo all three of these books and I about shit myself. Also, I still remembered nearly all the words to the Hearse Song after 30 years.

1

u/Embarrassed_Item3818 1h ago

Just re read all three last week (and realized after that perhaps it was not the best book choice while waiting outside of my kids dance classes)

1

u/warriorgoddesswitch 1h ago

My 10 year old loves scary and creepy stuff. I bought her this book and it was a hit. 😂

1

u/backtrackemu 1h ago

The guy who illustrated them is from near my hometown so he came to my 3rd grade class and told ghost stories. Nothing traumatizing but I can’t imagine that flying in classrooms today.

•

u/BlitzGirl13 Older Millennial 1h ago

I don’t remember the specific stories, but I do remember this artwork, and there was one Halloween back in elementary school where our teacher read from one of the books.
