Nostalgia The Brave Little Toaster is such a different movie as an adult

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I was little I remember being so upset with Toaster for leaving that flower that was so lonely. "Why did Toaster do that?!" I would think, angrily. As an adult, I see that Toaster was very broken up about it and was just trying to hide and not get overwhelmed by all the animals.

One thing I know about myself as an adult is that I cannot emotionally handle watching this movie again.

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

I know that for land before time. Unfortunately I didn't know that for All dogs Go to heaven...

9

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh 1990 3h ago

I simply cannot watch The Land Before Time. Truly, cannot lmao

10

u/FeralDrood 2h ago

I watched it after my mom died. What a mistake that was.

u/Drpoofn Older Millennial 3h ago

It's getting a remake

Not a remake but a 15 min short film called Littlefoot

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 43m ago

Self preservation? Smart move. Little foot losing his mom is.....a mood ruiner to say the very damn least. Great for jump starting a cry though!

6

u/Afraid-Procedure5351 3h ago

Okay- literally came here to comment this. The labs before time was the first movie that ever made me cry when i was little - and for brave little toaster, i remember being so sad after watching it, but not fully understanding why. But it was a deep sadness that left an imprint. Same with Dumbo. Ugh 😩

u/NightOfTheLivingHam 7h ago

The guy who made this movie was going through severe depression at the time and it shows

27

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

So glad he could spread that around to the kiddos 😮‍💨

14

u/CunningClanker 7h ago

Its healthy for kids to experience and learn about adversity.

5

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

I agree with you but it's also good to have an explanation along with my dose of reality. At the very least reassurance that it's all just cartoons.

u/Astra-Fang Millennial 5h ago

The car crusher scene hits different as an adult.

•

u/ianythingcantdoright 28m ago

I looked him up and he died by suicide 😔

u/palpatinesmyhomie 6h ago

My wife put this on the other day cause Disney Plus finally grew a pair and put it on. She didn't grow up with it and was shocked this was a childhood favorite of mine. The air conditioner at the beginning has always been what almost makes me stop watching lol he's not stuck in a wall, HE CAN LEAVE WHENEVER HE WANTS TOOOOO!!!!

15

u/permadoodle 5h ago

Right? The worst for me was the nightmare scene with the clown.

3

u/palpatinesmyhomie 4h ago

I always forget about that! It's so unnecessary and awesome lol

5

u/prophecy0 5h ago

That damn AC always terrified me as a kid.

5

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 5h ago

There's so many parts where I'm like can I keep watching this and function today. I mean got shit to do today man!

•

u/redline919 1h ago

The AC definitely his differently as an adult, but the magnet is what scared me as a kid

26

u/OldOperaHouseMan 7h ago

I feel like while I enjoyed The Brave Little Toaster as a kid I didn't really appreciate it until I was and adult.

That being said Worthless has lived rent free in my mind for years.

6

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

Never heard of "Worthless". Bit the title is not one that instills a sense of hope.

12

u/merrelf 6h ago

Its the song from the scrapyard scene from toaster.

5

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

Of course it is.

8

u/Astra-Fang Millennial 5h ago

I just can’t just cant seem to get started

Worrrthhllesssssssss

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 48m ago

Such a messed up song/scene

3

u/SuperdaveOZY 3h ago

Worthless showed that humans will discard any old thing if it stops working. The song before that, Cutting Edge, is similar in premise, that old appliances will be replaced by new ones, but really sings about consumerism. MORE MORE MORE!

1

u/SelicaLeone 5h ago

We loved that song as kids. Like, top 10 children's song. Kids are weird.

The scene with the flower!!! gah!!! My little kid heart. To this day, it makes me tear up. Whyyyyy was he so meeeeannn?? 😭

48

u/guitar_stonks 8h ago

Looking back, I really related to that flower. And that’s how I realized I’m not just a depressed adult, I was a depressed kid too.

13

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

Well you just let me know I've got some self reflecting to do. This scene absolutely devastated me as a kid.... now I may get why.

6

u/gg2700 7h ago

Mine was how much I related to Eeyore.

3

u/xmagpie 7h ago

Same. Brave little toaster, the land before time, and all dogs go to heaven were some of my favorite movies; I think I related to all the sadness and despair the characters portrayed.

15

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

I know!!! Toaster couldn't hang out for just a second at least? Or maybe going to get another flower for it would of helped the loneliness. Ugh, I don't know though, I guess that would be a dead body for the flower.

15

u/i_m_a_bean 4h ago

I thought the flower was more of a Narcissus reference. Beautiful and tragic.

It didn't like the toaster for who the toaster was, it liked it because of what it projected onto the toaster, which was basically itself. It was too caught up in its own reflection to see that the toaster was actually feeling pretty uncomfortable from it. When the toaster left, it lost its source of external validation so it withered, but toaster isn't responsible for how flower used it, and staying would have meant supporting flower even as flower was oblivious toaster's actual self and needs.

6

u/thirdfemme Older Millennial 3h ago

Whoooaaa, now this is the kind of analysis I’m lookin for! This makes perfect sense. I still feel terrible for the flower 😭

3

u/FaceMeltingJuice 1h ago

Lovely explanation, thank you.

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 45m ago

Ok now watch Land before time and all dogs go to heaven with me so you can explain shit that makes me sad as logical behaviors with psychological basis as it's explanation. Loved this.

15

u/lavender__clover 1988 8h ago

After watching this, my heart is broken. I absolutely loved that little flower 🌼

11

u/__DJIN__ 7h ago

Idk why cartoons back then would just throw in a heart wrenching moment for no real reason. But I guess it is important for kids to feel and process those feelings though. I'm still traumatized from both Old Yeller and Where The Red Fern Grows

7

u/MarchMan86 7h ago

The younger animators at the time were pushing for more intense emotions and more complex stories at a time when cartoons were strictly limited to being child friendly. The Brave Little Toaster were made by former Disney artists who became frustrated with how oppressive Disney’s films had become by that point.

6

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

Wow really?! Looking back I can totally see it in this film. Seems like it was either this or they secretly put in dicks on the cover of Little mermaid stuff.

4

u/hardlybroken1 7h ago

The Velveteen Rabbit was the one that wrecked me

7

u/Fried_0nion_Rings 8h ago

When I was little that was my first experience with depression and I didn’t know what it was, I was like 7 and my chest would ache everytime that part played. Like I had a hole inside me.

That being said I still watch that movie once every month or two and I love it.

There are two sequels that aren’t as good but I love them, brave little toaster to the rescue and brave little toaster goes to Mars.

Also based off a book and the author wrote a second book for goes to mars. I love the book but he writes really strangely

3

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

He writes strangely? I think it's translated well onto screen then!

15

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

I just always hated how lonely it was. Like Toaster can't stay for a minute to let him look at his reflection?!

9

u/lavender__clover 1988 8h ago

I feel like my love of daffodils (I think it was supposed to be a daffodil) is because of this movie. Also, it is my husband’s birth flower as well.

Toaster definitely had some issues, but abandoning that sweet lonely flower was just not cool. Not very cash money of Toaster.

1

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

Really cringe, Toaster. Just really.

8

u/BookTweakerShy 7h ago

A woman once grabbed me on the street as a child thinking I was her long dead son. I was, reasonably, freaked out and unnerved. Both reactions I feel are fair.

13

u/Timely_Apricot3929 89' Millennial 7h ago

Even though I often refer to myself as a brave little toaster, I don't know that I'm actually brave enough to watch this as an adult

4

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

You're going to leave the experience like toaster leaving that flower...

4

u/Timely_Apricot3929 89' Millennial 7h ago

2

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

This is the way to watch it! With dirt I your eyes

10

u/NoFaithlessness7508 8h ago

I’m going to try and go back to watch 80s Disney movies.

We tried watching BLT with my kids the other day and after 15mins we were done with it.

I now know why they called 90s Disney a renaissance

14

u/Ash_an_bun 8h ago

I don't think it was Disney.

15

u/Cuneus-Maximus 8h ago

It's not.

6

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

Add Land before Time and All dogs Go to heaven- you're going to be wrecked.

3

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh 1990 3h ago

BLT?

Edit; omg. Ya know, I’ll just leave it there for entertainment purposes. Lmao

9

u/meaolea149 7h ago

Nothing more traumatizing than the shoe going into the chemical dip in Who Framed Roger Rabbit….

3

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

That never happened. He was sliding into a hot bath, it was just too hot. OK?

7

u/nigel_bongberry 8h ago

the swamp cooler dude

9

u/guitar_stonks 8h ago

RIP Phil Hartman

7

u/nigel_bongberry 8h ago

Just made my husband watch small soldiers and we’re about to start news radio

7

u/Mockturtle22 Millennial '86 8h ago

Still traumatizing.

7

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

Didn't mean to leave you like this

4

u/wooof359 7h ago

That's where the "Brave" part comes in

3

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

The audience are the brave ones if you ask me. Get ready to have an emotional attachment to every inanimate object you encounter. Good luck throwing anything away without just the slightest to be of guilt.

•

u/chichi_vanite 44m ago

i have such a vivid memory of telling my mom that that flower was gonna die now because it’s petal fell and in my child brain i thought “well now all the petals are gonna fall and the flowers gonna be dead. it’s gonna die from sadness.” lol definitely gave little me one of my first experiences with soft dread.

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 38m ago

Soft dread is the perfect way to put it. Like I wasn't in any danger but I was definitely NOT OKAY.

•

u/chichi_vanite 36m ago

yesss you get it! it was a big emotion to handle as a 4-5 year old 🫠

3

u/LysonsCornerP226 7h ago

Thank you for reminding me of where the trauma began... sad fucking scene.

This movie fucked me up.

Phil Hartman commits suicide and there is a fire clown.

3

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 7h ago

The cars singing as they're being killed. Reminiscing about when they used to be worth something. Just accepting the inevitable crush.

3

u/LysonsCornerP226 7h ago

JFC no wonder I am like this.

3

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

Funny thing is you really had no choice but to watch all this shit because we didn't have these options like today

3

u/LysonsCornerP226 6h ago

2

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

I hate that media had us in a chokehold because we had such limited options. Like, this is weird but it's not the News or MASH, so...

2

u/LysonsCornerP226 6h ago

We did get Rocko's Modern Life though...

2

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 6h ago

Yes, we were thrown some scraps at least!

•

u/Moontrax808 24m ago

Was either this or Land before time .

3

u/XanadamAbsentmind 6h ago

I just watched this with my spouse. It was more bizarre than scary. That window AC unit and Kirby scared me as a kid.

3

u/etherealsmog 2h ago

This was like the literal saddest moment I’d ever seen as a small child, along with the tree star stuff in Land Before Time.

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 40m ago

When she tell himto listen to his heart but closely because it's so quiet

2

u/PastlifeloversApt304 Millennial 2h ago

I refuse to watch this as an adult due to the fact I do not want to be re traumatized.

•

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 41m ago

Look at you all not self loathing and shit. 🫡

•

u/michaelvenske 1h ago

Every now and again a line comes back to me. Yesterday’s line: “ya got any blender motors?” Still laugh. Love this movie and all the music!

2

u/ZookeepergameHot338 8h ago

Never seen this so trippy

7

u/ahelpfulcourtney Millennial 8h ago

You've never seen this? You either avoided a great deal of trauma or you did see it and you had to block it out cuz it was too much.

1

u/midnight_toker22 4h ago

Can’t wait to traumatize my kids with this movie. Builds character.

•

u/Special_Tay Millennial 30m ago

This is a dark movie.

•

u/Fabulous_Potato_5012 5m ago

Something about the vaccum cleaner sucking up its own cord scared the absolute FUCK out of me.
