There used to be one commercial break in the middle of a half hour time slot with the other breaks between shows.

Absolutely not, there were 3 sometimes 4 ad breaks that total 8 minutes of ads. Episodes were held to a strict 22 minute standard. Idk why anyone thinks this when you can literally watch old broadcasts of networks.

Simpsons theme ends... straight to commercials. It got really fucking bad there for a while.

My recollection is you’d get an ad break roughly every 15 minutes, so say 20 minutes of ads added to a 90-100 minute movie to fill a two-hour time slot.

Maybe because not all people on the internet are in the US or share your exact experience?

On UK terrestrial tv there is generally only one break per half hour show, and one between shows (4 an hour total, 3 an hour during movies on dedicated channels). Shows like The Simpsons regularly make reference to going to ad breaks, and half the time it just fades to black for a second then keeps running.

Your experience isn't universal.
