Not encouraging, but alcoholism was and still is 100% socially acceptable. There are tons of functional alcoholics out there. People that drink occasionally during the week and polish off a 12pk every weekend are definitely alcoholic.
Just because they aren't violent and they're able to hold down a job doesn't make them not an alcoholic.
The next issue is going to be THC abuse/addicts. In many ways this is also socially acceptable, and not looked at as negatively as alcoholism. Consuming alcohol or THC daily is abuse, not moderation.
A lot of people will openly defend daily THC use, and probably downvoted me for calling it abuse.
I understand what you're saying, but my point is that you don't have to be drinking 3 fifths every day and beating your wife and kids to be considered an alcoholic.
Same with THC, is abusing THC arguably not as bad as abusing alcohol? Probably. Is abusing alcohol arguably not as bad as abusing heroin? Probably.
They're all drugs and it's not a competition. Drug abuse is harmful and bad regardless, even abusing THC can and has destroyed lives and relationships.
That said, use of THC and alcohol in moderation is fine IMO. I'd stay away from the heroin.
Pills/pain killers are another one. Perfectly legitimate uses for them, but when abused they can destroy lives.
"weekend alcoholic" is absolutely a thing. In fact, Sir Patrick Stewart uses that term to describe his father and why he isn't a big drinker, he saw how problematic it was as a child.
If Captain Picard says it, then it must be true. Make it so.
