He said "We haven't got one yet" for people saying, rightfully so, that it is mostly a bad idea to surprise someone with a pet. It is obvious he was ready for.one and his family beat him to the punch. Look at him grab that big guy. :)

I love how the puppy just went in for the hug.

Oh that dog is absolutely drugged. Like trazadone or something. They carried it out like a limp noodle and it just hung there and flipped onto the guy.
Sauce: my dog has car anxiety and gets trazadone + gabapentin for it. Floppy baby just like this.

That right there is a guy thinking about the past 15 years and the next 15 years in the space of about 3 seconds. That is an insane rush. I feel you, bud.

So when my first dog had to be put down I was so heartbroken I never wanted another dog. My parents argued with me and two weeks later got a new 6 month old puppy. I was so pissed for a few weeks but grew to love her so fast. She passed June 2025 at 14 as we had to put her down due to cancer and I was an absolute wreck. I live on my own but 8 months later they wanted to get an 8 week old puppy and I said I'd help. I love that puppy more than anything. Just like the first two. I go over all the time to play. Like a light in my life.
I'm so glad they knew he wanted another dog and granted his wish rather than just get him one without knowing how he felt. Because dogs are such good friends to us and just another part of the family. I hope his time with this new pup is filled with incredible love and memories.

Assuming they really really really knew this guy wanted the exact same breed & gender of dog, otherwise I would never buy somebody a pet.

I feel the same way. Some people need to grieve before getting a new animal. I couldn't just spring an animal on a person.

My ex brought home a dog for us to foster about two weeks after my dog died of heart failure, she didn't understand why I wasn't enthusiastic.

I was in love with this girl in high school, and one day she tells me that she has always wanted a black lab…. So my dumbass gets her a puppy for her 16th birthday. 6 months later the dog gets run over by a car and killed, also I was locked away into the friend zone…. Real lose-lose situation… needless to say I would never ever do that again!

I mean yeah, theyre his family. They definitely knew he wanted another dog and knew what kind of dog he likes, presumably the same breed as the last one.
I dont really see the purpose of your comment. You dont have to be so critical of things you see online for which you have no context. You can just smile and keep scrolling

I thought I was going crazy or watched a different video. I know some assholes like to virtue signal or whatever on social media, but this man's reaction looks exactly like the kind of guy who wanted a new dog.

Instantly loving the new dog but still missing his old dog is what I saw in his eyes

u/Wonder-woman-99 9h ago
I agree with this. Clearly the people around him (probably including his wife) are close enough to him to know if he were really ready for this.

I just dont get why people are making negative assumptions instead of positive ones. It feels like Redditors will contort any situation to be something they can condescendingly lecture others on.
Just stop. Enjoy the cute video. Dont start trying to imagine all the various ways it COULD be a bad situation. You dont know anything about it

There’s a lot of negativity in the world these days. People have forgotten how to be kind. I refuse to go that route, as do you obviously 😊😎

Exactly!! Also, if he is ready for it again. I love dogs so much. Despite being allergic to them, I have 3 big dogs in house. However, I can’t imagine the stress of raising an unplanned puppy.

I get the intention but this should not be the case every single time.
Losing a pet and then getting a new one is not going to replace the old one. They are each unique in their own ways, like humans.
As a previous dog owner, I realized I was tied down a lot and revolved my schedule and budget around my dog..I couldn't travel without needing pet accommodation, I needed extra money to pay for my dog's foods, I couldn't go out an hang out with my friends as long because I had to go back and walk/feed my dog, etc. When I lost my dog to cancer, it fucking hurt like hell to lose him, but I also didn't feel as tied down..also, I didn't want to feel like I was replacing him and needed some time. The cost and burden of owning a pet is something that should be discussed with the owner prior to getting a new one.
I'm glad his reaction shows he's appreciative, but can you imagine if one of your friends randomly got you a pet unexpectedly and now you're responsible for the well-being for that animal?

Yea I’m 100% with you on this. We don’t really know the context here and it’s very possible he discussed maybe wanting another one at some point. That said, when my brother lost his dog that he was extreme close to, my sister when and immediately got him another one. It was within like a few days. I kept telling her not to but she didn’t listen. It caused a fuck ton of stress on him and you could tell he wasn’t even close to ready. It was a massive burden on him for awhile.
Eventually it was ok but that was thrust onto him. He loved that dog too (he unfortunately passes way earlier this year) and I’m sure it did help him heal at some point but it was too soon. I wouldn’t want someone doing that to me, that’s for damn sure.
This dude on the video did genuinely seem happy to get the dog so I’m guessing there was discussion or maybe his wife understood that he’s gotten through a lot of the initial grieving. That pup looks super sweet too so I’m happy for the dude.

Exactly this. If theyve discusses it extensively beforehand then it's fine. But if I were going to take on the responsibilities of a pet, especially a puppy, I would want to pick the puppy myself.

u/Valuable-Bullfrog435 3h ago
We don't have to imagine anything. You have no context to the video so just appreciate it for what it is. Jesus.

u/griffincorg 2h ago
That's a bit of a naive and narrow-minded thing to say.
If I were in that guy's shoes and someone gave me a new puppy after I just lost my soul dog, I'm not taking it in. Hell, it's already been 4 years since I lost mine and I still wouldn't want to take in a new dog..it's a lot of responsibility.

u/Valuable-Bullfrog435 2h ago
Yeah, that's you mate. Let this guy feel however he wants and stop projecting onto him. Sorry you lost your dog but we all move on in different ways. Can't there be one positive thing on the internet without people tearing it down?

Holy fuck this video isn't about You.

u/griffincorg 1m ago
No shit Sherlock, but gifting a pet right after someone losing one isn't always the answer. Read my first fucking sentence.

u/FaceWithAName 0m ago
It's a video about a guy who clearly loves dogs and you turned it into this weird shit.

Damn. When it's my buddy's time, I don't think I'll have it in me to do it all over again. I'll be devastated...

Dudes heart evolved at that moment. A new chapter of love was created. Not to replace the old one but simply to love again.

I don’t know. My dog died four years ago and I would not be happy if someone just sprang a new dog on me. I loved THAT PARTICULAR dog.
