Good evening. I was recently looking up Kazakh cuisine online and became interested in some ingredients I hadn’t known about before. I’ve never actually been there, so I can only imagine what they taste like, but here’s what I came up with. Would a comment like this from a foreigner be considered rude?
① Epi with Horse Meat and Kurt Sauce
I think it would be delicious to spread Kurt sauce on rolled-out bread dough, top it with thin slices of horse meat that have been stir-fried with pepper and cooled, roll it up into an “epi” shape, and bake it.
I got the idea because Japanese bakeries sell all kinds of bread with various fillings rolled inside, like custard-filled buns and sausage rolls.
I’ve never eaten horse meat, and I couldn’t find kurt online, so I can’t test this recipe…
② Gelato with Balkaymak
It wouldn’t just be great as gelato—it would also be wonderful to top vanilla ice cream with Balkaymak and sprinkle it with chopped almonds.
③ Balkaymak Macchiato
Since caramel macchiato is already a commercial product, this sounds delicious.
④ Desserts Using Balkaymak
It would taste great used as apple pie filling or drizzled on top. It would also be delicious kneaded into dough when making donuts, or drizzled over plain donuts—and it would look great in photos, too.
When I searched for “Balkaymak” without including “Kazakhstan” in the search bar, results for the Turkish version also came up, which was a bit confusing.
Since making Balkaymak takes time and effort, I wonder if it’ll be limited to a certain number of servings per day.
I recently found a website that provides recipes for Kuzul Ilimshik in Japanese. Is my understanding correct that Ak Ilimshik is made by skimming the cream off milk, mixing it with butter, and then cooking it down to remove the moisture?
Also, does the freshly skimmed, moisture-rich version have a different name? I thought it would be delicious in a hamburg steak.
In Kazakhstan, when making new variations of bread, do you add camel or horse milk to the dough water? Or do you use powdered versions, like skim milk?
I’m curious about what kind of bread you’d get if you crumbled kurt and kneaded it into the dough after the first rise. Would it be better to mix it into the dough before it’s shaped and set aside for fermentation…? It seems like this would expand the variety of savory breads.
Will I be able to try it if I visit the country?
The flavor of dairy products probably varies by region, so I wonder if they sell any “tasting sets” to compare them…
From a Japanese person who strained my wrist this week from typing too much about AI and recipe variations using the swipe method
I used a translation tool to help with the English text above.

Hi everyone! We’re five people from Almaty who used to build an AI platform together at a local startup. This summer we left to build our own thing: PHORM (phorm.to).
You upload one photo of an object, a pet or a person, and get a 3D model ready to print on a home 3D printer. Everything in the pictures I printed myself at home.
We launched this week. The first generations are free, and paid plans work worldwide through Dodo Payments, straight to a regular Kazakh IP (sole proprietorship). That part took some figuring out, so if you’re building something here and wondering how to take payments from abroad, happy to share what we learned.
It’s not for precise mechanical parts, for those you still need CAD.
So a question for you: if you could turn one photo into a figure on your shelf, what would it be? A pet, your parents, your car, something else?
And if you 3D print in Kazakhstan, where do you get your filament? It feels like there aren’t many of us yet 🙂
Update: Thank you all for the warm welcome, didn't expect this! We just turned on payments and we're still waiting for our very first paying users. So if you like what we're building, the best way to support us is a paid plan: it starts at $9 a month, and the first generations are free to try. And if you have a Bambu printer or are thinking of getting one, ask me anything, happy to help with setup.

I am in Almaty, while I was studying for my trip here, I did hear some chatter about people being a little aloof and minding their own business, not having your usual standard of warmness- - which is absolutely understandable not every culture will be the same and one must not expect that too. I also read that once people get to know you are you are in their inner circle people can be really hospitable and welcoming.
However, my experience (i know it can just be bad luck) with locals has been very unpleasant, I understand if people don't smile at strangers or offer to help or do your typical meet and greet, but people even in the hospitality business are cold and distant. It is really unpleasant because it makes you want to leave the place as soon as possible, especially as a solo female traveller the coldness can be really hard to understand because you're not sure if you're pissing them off or you did something wrong.
The place is wonderful, the architecture, the food, the transport everything is amazing, but it's extremely unwelcoming (I understand it might be unintentional or maybe I had really high expectations after visiting other neighbouring countries) but this just feels like they don't want you here, which again is fair, it's their country afterall but it's really not fun to be on the receiving end of. Not sure if I'd recommend this place to other solo (brown) female travellers.
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone with this post but yeah, I feel unwelcomed and rejected. I am headed to Astana, are there any tips you would give me to maybe do something different? Once again, I understand it's very cultural and no one owes me kindness but it's just hard to enjoy when you feel so unwelcomed.
Thank you for reading so much.

Body:

I don't trade for profit. Just decided to sell some of my crypto. I have done that before, I don't do it very often and did it again as usual. Exactly the same day my bank account got blocked. I called the cyberpolice department of Almaty and they told me to come to Kunaev so I could see what charges they are putting on me. I find this situation kinda weird, coz even if there is some bad history with this money, it looks like this: I went to Binance, sold my crypto, got money and they are charging me coz I just happened to be the last person in this chain. Even they way they talk with weird jokes and so on makes me feel a bit sick. Is it true if I don't come to their department in another city, they will put me in wanted list? At least that's what they told me
Has anyone had a situation like this? I would be grateful for any advice

Hii, I am planning to take a sleeper train from Almaty to Pavlodar, and I want to book the train ticket online ahead of my trip in Kazakhstan because I love to be prepared (I'm currently not in Kazakhstan). A friend of mine recommended that I use Tickets.kz, However when I try to open the website, it cannot stop loading,( maybe if you have any tips on how to book a train ticket on Tickets.kz , Could you please share them with me ?) but because of that, I tried other websites such as 12Go.asia and Aviata.kz / freedom-travel.kz . On those website the only type of class I can book is the плацкарт (Platskart/3rd class), but I actually want to book the купе (Kupe/2nd class).
Furthermore, when I tried to choose the ticket to see how the seat arrangement was, the websites said "Free seat selection is available at this step. Choose your seat for extra comfort, or it will be assigned by the carrier." but there was only 1 available free option on both of those websites, which was only for a lower berth (from what I could understand, because i read on google that the odd-numbered seats are the upper berth and the even-numbered ones are the lower ones, is this true?) , but there was no other option to choose a seat besides the free available one, I mean I'm fine if I have to pay more to get the lower berth. So my questions are:
Any tips big or small, any knowledge and experience shared are appreciated. Thank you very much.

What are good places to get book reviews in Kazakhstan for an English speaking novel that partially takes place in Astana and Baikonur?
It's speculative fiction that takes place on Earth and on Mars in 2040. The owner of the Mars colony and the headquarters of operations is in Astana in Kazakhstan. Hence, I think there might be interest for the book in Kazakhstan. I don't speak the language (and the book is in English) so I am wondering whom I could potentially reach out to, to see if they are interested in reviewing the book?
Any suggestions?
