Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

"In 600 Feet, Make a u-turn." - not safe

I'm finding a recurring problem where Google Maps is not giving enough advanced warning to make a u-turn. I'm talking about driving on divided roads where the speed limit is 55 or even 65 mph. Sometimes, the route requires me to change directions by crossing on a drive across the median. However, there's no advanced warning. It just suddenly says, "In 600 feet, make a u-turn." When driving at 55 mph or more, this is not enough time so safely slow down to a complete stop and reverse directions. I've sent feedback about this issue, but Maps has yet to fix it.

Time to leave.

I drive 35,000 miles a year and use Google Maps for every single trip. In the past couple months alone Google Maps has messed up over 40 times some have cost me hours in time. Google just tried to take me on a 5 minute detour to drive one block. It added 35 miles to a trip, to a destination i never entered, in the middle of my trip. Voice no longer works - "navigate to the nearest home depot" "okay lowes!"

"Navigate to McDonald's" "okay, em, see, donalds" (i sweark not making this up). Theu clearly don't care and are probably pushing consumers away so they can focus on ai farms. Fuck google.

GoogleMaps stopped working

After many years of working just fine, suddenly Google Maps stopped working. The safari page open OK but typing in a location results in nothing. Have tried all remedies suggested by numerous online resources....nada. Google Maps works OK in Firefox.

My entire timeline history is back... WTF?

Like many of you, I lost my entire timeline history at the end of 2024. A decade of trips and memories, gone.

After trying everything to retrieve it, I sadly came to terms that it was probably deleted out of existent when Google switched to storing timeline locally on our phone. Since then, I haven't really cared much for timeline and seldom open it anymore. Until today...

I opened my timeline to check something from a few months ago. For some reason, it prompted me to go to my backups and import my history from previous backups. I've done this multiple times in the past couple of years, but it's never brought back my history. So I did it again. Why not, right?

Out of curiosity, I decided to check my history before 2024 for the extremely off chance that my timeline would magically show up again. I was fully expecting it to still be greyed out as it's been the past two years. Lo and behold, it was no longer greyed out. My entire timeline history was back, dating all the way from a decade ago.

I know it sounds silly, but I don't know how to feel! I had already accepted that my timeline history was gone forever, so I'm extremely thankful it's back.

For those who were unable to retrieve your history after the change - try again now and see if it works. Go to your backups and import from every backup available.

Google Maps changed our destination twice

My boyfriend and I are on vacation. We were trying to get to a show. He was driving so we used his phone (pixel 10). It took us to some random place 15 minutes from where we needed to be. Thought it was user error. We switched to my phone (pixel 9) and the same thing happened. Started taking us to some other rando location. Thankfully I realized and switched to mapquest on my backup travel phone (iphone 14) and got us there no problem… only 20 minutes late. We’ve been using mapquest since then and haven’t had any issues. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Has anyone heard of an app, or a maps add on, or anything that will alert you when near a saved place?

Screenshot What is that dotted line coming from my location?

Ever since this 3D update in Nav mode, there's this dotted line that extends outward from my car's location to halfway around the globe, when you zoom out. What is that? Is that where one of the GPS satellites is picking me up from? If so, why do I need this info, and why do I only need it seldomly?

It might not be that bad an issue, but my ADHD brain freaking hates it.

I built a search engine for custom Google My Maps, with 2.2 million user-made maps so far

People put a lot of time into custom Google Maps about things they care about. Unfortunately, Google stopped offering a way to discover other people's maps years ago, so right now you basically can't find these maps unless someone sends you the link.

I ran into this when someone sent me a map of the police districts in Berlin. It helps me a lot in my job, and I wondered why I hadn't found it earlier and what else I was missing.

So I built a website that collects these maps, sorts them into categories and makes them searchable.

There are already 2.2 million maps in the index. You can also sign in with Google and add maps from your own account, including ones other people shared with you. I hope that brings in maps that were never posted anywhere on the open internet.

I've only looked at a tiny fraction of the index, so there are probably plenty of hidden gems in there. I'll post some interesting ones I found in a comment.

It would mean a lot if you tried it out and told me what to improve. Liking and disliking maps also helps the ranking.

Can't Close Out Of Google Maps

I'm a Lyft driver. If I have Google Maps running to get me to a destination, but then get a Lyft ride, I can't figure out how to get rid of the Maps screen. I can reduce it to a small box when getting a Lyft notice. But when I head to my Lyft pick up, the Google Maps instructions interfere, believing I still want to take the trip I'd inputted. It's very annoying because the GM directions pop up over my Lyft directions any time I've deviated from the GM path. Surely there's a way to combat this. Right?

Restaurant Menus are outdated, almost always!

I travel a lot, and find this very frustrating. I’d like to gauge how universal my complaint is. Look up a restaurant and tap “menu,” You’ll get user uploaded photos of the place’s hard-copy menu from God knows how many years ago, showing all kinds of discontinued items, and prices with five years of inflation shaved off. I wish I could make the restaurant honor the prices displayed on Google Maps, but they didn’t upload the pics.

IMO, the fix would be something like: the “menu” tab should be reserved for official uploads from the establishment itself. I don’t think it sounds onerous to expect today’s business owners to be interested in what Google represents about them, and to want to submit a digital menu to promote their business and help their customers. Since Google is so widely used.

Anyone else thought through this problem and have ideas?

Timeline what did you actually use google timeline for, and what replaced it?

since timeline moved to the phone and a lot of people lost years of history in the switch, i keep seeing "im manually updating it now" posts here. nobody keeps that up for long lol

curious what people actually used it for. trips and memories, mileage or tax stuff, work hours, "where was i at 3pm on the 12th"? feels like really different needs

disclosure, im just validating an idea, nothing built, no link. a timeline of your whole day that fills itself in, places plus what you were doing, and you can look back at a week or a month and see where your time actually went.

if it guesses wrong you fix it in one tap and it learns.

so if you left timeline, what did you move to and is it actually better? and if it works fine for you now, say that too

Help/Support “Avoid Tolls” still routed me onto the toll road

I have always had my maps set to avoid tolls but this is now the 2nd time in 2w that it has ignored that setting and forced me onto a toll road (I was able to switch to a different map app to avoid it on the 2nd trip). Even when I pull up the route on other devices/accounts, Google Maps continues to direct immediately onto the Express Lanes with and without toll avoidance turned on. Now I’m being charged over $20 because I physically could not leave the Express Lanes without exiting to a road in the complete opposite direction.

Maybe I’m being childish and petty, but Google should have a lawsuit against them for this happening so often. It even tried to direct me down a one way in the wrong direction. At the very least, they should be giving reimbursement. $20 may not seem like a lot, but that is literally all I have in my account, and I haven’t even been able to pay for tuition, rent, or my car payments for this month. I cannot afford this.

Discussion is there a way to make Google Maps not zoom out whenever I hit "restaurants?"

this keeps happening and annoying me...

I just carefully zoomed in on the street I'll be driving on later, and hit the "restaurants" button, and then it zoomed out to show me 10x the area. Is there a way to just keep it where I put it?

Help/Support Google maps not working

Google Maps is acting like it has no internet, but everything else on my phone is working fine. When I open it it's just a blank beige screen and some UI but no actual map. Searching for places doesn't work, and it jusg keeps acting like it's loading but nothing happens.

Things I've tried (not in order):

  1. Clear cache

  2. Clear data

  3. Force stop

  4. Check 'wifi only' option is off

  5. Restart phone

  6. Update google maps

  7. Uninstall then reinstall google maps

Street View It's ignoring fast public transport options, why?

So here's my issue. (And please note, I live in Europe, in a city with good public transport.)

I wanted to go from one end of the city to the other. I looked at routes, and saw... this app was sending me on a one hour bus ride (again) instead of suggesting the underground (12 mins, maybe 15, tops) and then 3 bus stops.

The route the bus takes is always, always clogged. It's also meandering, stopping at every block or so. There is really no point to taking the bus. The metro is running just fine.

I'd have lost half an hour at least, if I took that route.

And I've taken that route before, as Google Maps suggested it, like an absolute doofus, and clocked the entrance to the Underground at the end of my journey. So at least I did not take the long bus ride back.

But there is absolutely no way to force this buggy thing to suggest the underground and then the 3 bus stops instead of just taking the entire, one hour bus ride. I've tried! It's completely mental. It's 30 minutes longer at least!

Less Walking? Oh yeah, just take the slow bus. Subway? Yeah, just take the metro and walk for 3 bus stops. (Why??) Subway and bus boxes ticked in? Bus suggestion, again. Best route? Bus. (Argh!)

What is deeply, seriously wrong with Google Maps, and how can I fiddle with it to show me decent results? Please?

Help/Support Getting "could not calculate driving directions" errors

So I'm working on a project that requires looking up driving distances between different major cities, and all of a sudden I'm running into an issue I've never seen before. For example, if I try routing between Rome and Paris, it shows that public transport would take 13 hours, but I get could not calculate errors for driving and walking directions. If I toggle between transit mode options, I can get it to calculate, but as I proceed it's becoming less and less reliable. What's going on and how can it be fixed?

Google Maps for iPhone: Grey Blank Screen When Opening Any Customer Review

Google Maps for iPhone: Grey Blank Screen When Opening Any Customer Review
Is anyone else experiencing this issue with Google Maps on iPhone?
Whenever I try to open a customer review to read the full text, the app displays a grey, blank screen. This happens regardless of how I try to open the review, whether I tap the review itself, select it from the reviews list, or tap “Read more.”
I’ve already done extensive troubleshooting, including signing out of all my Google accounts, removing the accounts from my device, completely deleting Google Maps, reinstalling the app, and signing back in. Unfortunately, none of this has resolved the problem.
What’s particularly frustrating is that this happens on both of my iPhones, yet I can open and read the exact same reviews without any issues through a web browser. I’ve also checked with other iPhone users who aren’t experiencing this problem.
This leads me to believe there may be a bug in the Google Maps iOS app rather than an issue with my account or either device.
Here’s what I’d like to know:
Is anyone else experiencing a grey or blank screen when attempting to read Google Maps reviews on an iPhone?
Has anyone found a solution that actually works?
Is this a known issue that Google is currently investigating?
I’ve exhausted the usual troubleshooting steps, so I’m hoping to get some feedback from other users or, ideally, someone from the Google Maps team.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can share their experience or offer some insight.

Help/Support Location not updating

I used to work at an old office and a few weeks ago we moved to a new one.

However, my Google Maps location (the blue dot) still appears at the old location, and no matter what I do the dot doesn't update to the new office. It's been days and I've tried resetting the cookies and the Wi-Fi, and clearing cache, but it still doesn't update. What can I do?
