i remember years ago when my niece and nephew were still really little. i very rarely ever saw them but they were pretty friendly and sweet and hyper as kids usually are. im not great with kids but we had fun "making youtube videos" until it got dark and i eventually had to leave. their mom was pushing for them to give me a hug but for some reason my niece really did not want to give me a hug. she didn't shut down or anything, just maybe a little shy because maybe even after the few hours we hung out, i was still kind of a stranger? anyway, i offered to give her a high five instead and she lit up at that. they both gave me a high five and it was fine. i wasnt offended. their mom was for some reason though. i'll never understand it.
i grew up with a mom who would pick my nose with long acrylic nails and would harshly pull me back towards her when i pulled away; she would touch my hair because it's really long and when i pulled away, again she would yank me back and remind me that she gave birth to me and she can touch me whenever she wanted. it never got any darker than that but ... it made me respect children's agency and boundaries a lot more because i knew what it felt like for my own mother not to.
