It doesn't seem to pathologize normal family affection at all, though. If it did, it wouldn't have shown that first kid immediately throwing himself at them gleefully.

It's simply about some people not wanting to be touched and other people who ought to respect that.

Lol the fact that they feel the need to run a national campaign to lecture grandparents on getting verbal consent from their own grandkids is the definition of pathologizing it. They are taking a totally normal family dynamic (a kid being grumpy and a grandparent wanting a hug) and turning it into a clinical HR safety lesson. its deranged.

Except that's a huge assumption.

I don't know if I'm projecting, man, I'm very affectionate myself but I often struggle with physical contact from men even if they're family due to a past SA.

Not most of the cases out there? For sure, thankfully. But also, it's nice that you can just politely step out of it and deny kisses or hugs without having to explain yourself.

I'm genuinely sorry you had to go through that, and in your specific context, establishing strict physical boundaries makes complete sense. But as you noted, that is the exception, not the rule. The issue here is public policy.

We shouldn't be designing national ad campaigns and general societal baselines around severe trauma.

When you try to mandate clinical consent rules for the 99% of healthy, functioning families just to accommodate the worst-case scenarios, you end up pathologizing normal human affection for everyone else.
