This thread is full of people who really don't understand the point:

It's not telling you grandparent hugs are bad. It's telling you that ignoring other people's boundaries REGARDING THEIR OWN PHYSICAL BODY is bad.

This is especially important with kids, because it's important to teach kids that they're allowed to exercise bodily autonomy. If kids aren't taught that, it becomes far easier for someone to take advantage of them being trained to allow touching they don't want because they feel like they have to.

Exactly. I have a niece that doesn't want to do goodbye hugs anymore, so we did goodbye high-fives for a bit. Now she just wants to wave goodbye and that's her choice and it's important she learns to stand firm on that sort of stuff from an early age, and that importance outweighs my desire to want to pick her up and wiggle her around while making silly noises.

I visited my cousin and his family recently and they have a little girl (is she my niece? Second cousin? Idk) who is about three years old. I hadn't seen her since she was a baby since they live far away, so although we got along great, she still doesn't know me very well.

When it was time to say goodbye I asked if she wanted a hug or a high five. She went for the high five and seemed pretty happy about it! I don't understand why it's so hard to respect the fact that a kid might not want to hug a family member sometimes, whether they're close or not. I mean, hell - I ask my own son if he wants a hug. 99% of the time he does, and 1% of the time he doesn't. That's his decision.
