A couple decades ago, I didn't push for my young niblings to hug or kiss me, especially at family gatherings. They were welcome to. I also thought they might be "touched out." So I chose to greet and farewell verbally, sometimes with arms outstretched a bit to invite but not require hugs.
My mom eventually noticed and had something to say about it. Like why aren't I more touchy with them? I told her my thinking. She thought it was weird.
I always loved and got along great with kids. I interacted with them a lot. I was always ready for a hug or a cuddle. I just decided not to push for it. To let them decide in a context where whatever they chose was as enthusiastically and lovingly returned, and enough.
