The whole point of a greeting is to establish a good initial impression and rapport between eachother.

If you're gonna force what you want on the other person without consideration for how comfortable they may be with what you're doing, then you might not be treating them how you'd actually want, given further thought about the consequences of your actions and how theyll develop the relationship.

Grace goes both ways. Some people literally just don't consider others' boundaries, and should be politely reminded. The issue really is when there's either no communication/consideration, or when there is it turns into deflection because somebody cant handle being told what they did wasn't perfectly fine.

We can all learn from eachother, and consistently intending to make eachother happy and comfortable around eachother is all we really need to do in these situations. Whether you do something that is received well or is received poorly, you can learn from it to do better next time without necessarily having to feel like a scumbag.

A hug is a social currency, just like a smile, or politeness. Speaking rudely for no reason is an insult. Looking annoyed is an insult. Not returning a handshake or a hug is an insult. You can do it, you are not obliged to be nice or return handshakes, but you must also be ready to eat the consequences of those actions, and that's what people advocating for your point seem to miss.

By refusing a hug from a family member, you are saying "you are not worth the effort, I don't care about you, your feelings, or your opinion". That's not only self-entitled, but also delusionally detached from reality, not to mention cruel.

Yes, kids might feel discomfort trying to fit into society. That's a part of it. You are not an island. You have to make adjustments for society, because society will not make adjustments for you, it will just steamroll you into an early grave. You either play by the rules, or you lose by them.

That's the lesson that you don't get. That's the fence that you are taking down without knowing why it's there. And now the wolves are coming, ruh-roh!

“This child is forced to accept my touch or become a social outcast” is not a good thing to defend actually :)
