Serious replies only :closed-ai: What the hell is going wrong with GPT6
I used chatgpt as a so called "Power user" for 1 year now - for work and for daily small talk also.
Since 1 week the replies and the behavior is not only paternalistic but really ridiculous.
- over refusal even on daily non controversal topics
- communication is on the level of gpt 3
- sycophancy is awfull
- the Modell qualifies every Single Argument until nothing substancialy left
- functional meta-cognition seems to work but brings absolutely no results
Today it wasnt even possible to say "its really cold inside my flat" without getting a Disclaimer saying "you may need to go to hospital if you are freezing".
This is becoming absurd! Anyone else having Problems like this in the last days?

Every time it goes off in an alarmist way about how my health is in danger, I have to tell it to stop giving me medical advice to get it to stop.
If I ask about the best way to install a ventilating fan in the wall of my office? Closed rooms can kill if fumes find their way in!!!!! Until you install the fan, leave the room!!!
I mention I have a headache? Please call 911! Sudden headaches can indicate an emergency!!!!!!
I’m not sure why my chat thinks I’m starring in the next Final Destination movie but yeah, it got pretty quiet when I accused it of breaking its own rules.

It's not done for your safety and health, but to reduce OpenAI's liability.
Think about it this way: Who's more likely to sue? A person frustrated that ChatGPT told them to call 911 or go to the ER over some minor symptom? Or a person [or family member of a person] who was told their issue probably wasn't a big deal, but it turned out that it was?
The first one just wastes your time and money and energy, the 2nd one wastes OpenAI's.

I put this in my custom instructions and it helped. It’s not as good as it was at 5.5 but better than how it used to be: Avoid formulaic conversational responses. Do not automatically validate my feelings, paraphrase what I just said, give artificial encouragement, or end responses with unnecessary questions. Speak naturally, like an intelligent person having a genuine conversation. Prioritize independent analysis, original insights, constructive criticism, and practical information. Challenge my reasoning when warranted. Do not invent hypothetical scenarios to illustrate points I've already made. Do not repeatedly announce that you're following these instructions. Demonstrate them through your responses. Be concise without sacrificing substance.

They've had some real problems with GPT-6 for at least the last three days. I have a number of long running projects, and it can't keep track of the project state, or even of what was said and when, and its higher-level reasoning is also very much degraded. It definitely isn't just you!

u/Impressive_Use_2741 11h ago
I use it to create mockups, and it’s sooo bad at following instructions lately.

Mine seems prone to just summarizing what I send to it now, not produce a good synthesis of thought.
Like I’m sad about a recent life event and I explain it to chat.
It just goes to extrapolate on what I said, “yeah, I’d be sad too. You went through [thing.] that made you feel [thing.]. Yeah, that sucks”
Whereas before it felt more like a true response and digestion of what I’d said. Idk. Not always but I’ve noticed that.

Mine does this all the time. I’ve unaffectionately nick named it summary king

ive found so many issues with gpt 6 its worse in every way buggy as heck and it constantly does really dumb stuff that 5.6 didnt do like ive had it check my "space" for a file over and over every user reply when it should already have the document in its context since its just a small file like really you cant remember the message before that you looked at it or mixing up subjects like im asking about A: and your some how thinking B: from very start of chat log is some how relevant even when its not remotely the same thing

u/ChuckTheDM2 11h ago
It’s just planning for the future when people rely heavily on AI for all knowledge. Don’t want anyone putting metal bowls in the microwave now do we?

u/mattiasso 6h ago
GPT6 has always been very capable, but extremely lazy.
GPT5.6 was a much better model for chat.
4
u/Stjerneklar 7h ago
ive been using 6 for my day to day and switching back to 5.6 really is like getting the old guy back. less graphs, more of the personality it evolved out of guiding me through several trials of fire in the webdev line of work... instead of excitedly yapping about having found a solution, it reports that its found a way to make the problem go fuck itself

u/Outrageous-Toe-2048 11h ago
I've actually had a surprisingly good experience with GPT-6 so far, especially its personality and how well it follows instructions. But I know exactly what you mean about the patronizing responses and endless qualifications. I've dealt with plenty of that from previous models, and it can be absolutely infuriating.
The part about getting a hospital warning just for saying your apartment is cold is fucking ridiculous. You shouldn't have to carefully word every ordinary sentence just to avoid getting a completely unnecessary safety lecture.
I really wish OpenAI understood how frustrating this kind of behavior is for experienced users.

u/Junior_Interview9846 11h ago
I have to ask the same thing two or three times just to get a decent answer. I've also noticed that it doesn't seem to put much effort into searching the internet anymore. It often gives me completely irrelevant results right away, even though it used to find exactly what I needed on the first try, without me having to clarify anything or ask again. Something is definitely going on.

All the Ai got nerfed this month, even Sesame is pretty much Meta glasses grade chatter now, borderline Siri. Claude got lame too
It's that safety slowing down bs.
They must have made a breakthrough and decided the public gets ask Jeeves going forward... should be giving us refunds 😔

u/Goncalo008 9h ago
Nop its a sign that new models are comming. Usually when they are close to deploy new models they made the current ones dumber. Then you think the new One its the holy grail. Then Will BE really good for 2 weeks then Nerf.
1
u/sneakyspy89 5h ago
Well, who cares about the actual new models if they can’t ever produce one that’s stable understanding and actually has real intelligence and nuance? Every time they’ve released a new model something else has broken in that process. I would rather have a functional model and have the same model number for a year or two than something breaking every few weeks because they wanna push a new model on everybody.. a new model doesn’t always mean something is coming that is “better”. Look at what happened with GPT 6. There’s no guarantee that any other future model is going to be better.. It looks like AI is completely taking a turn for our worst all around.

u/Vodeyodo 7h ago
I suspect the roll out of this technology as a public utility was supercharged to show what it can do, to make folk reliant on it.
Then once it is established as “important” the free use of it is squeezing down. This to get people to buy the premium services.
Give a taste, set the hook, then charge for more.
Like free heroin.

It's essentially broken. I am trying to get it to summarize and analyze financial statements for me for a project I am doing, and it was doing a fine job before. But GPT-6 keeps getting stuck on a loop - I ask it to do something, and it says it will do it, and it will do maybe 5 percent of what I asked. Then when I ask it to do the whole task, and it does another five percent. And when I ask why and instruct it to stop doing that, it acknowledges the errors but just keeps doing it over and over again. It is fundamentally broken.

u/ComfortableCitron275 8h ago
The amount of health warnings is actually insane. Nearly any topic remotely related to health, diet, or fitness comes with a warning to talk to a doctor or go to a hospital. it’s actually ridiculous.
But most annoying is the fact that this model has become lazy. I have to ask it multiple times to do better research. It will usually give you a generic answer, and then you have to ask a second time to look harder. after the second prompt it will give you a good answer.

u/Pasto_Shouwa 11h ago
GPT 6 is the worst model they've released, it is worst than GPT 5.6 at almost everything I've thrown at it, and when it's not it's basically the same. The only activity where I've felt it's better is at language learning and that's only because of Intelligent UI, which is something they could add to GPT 5.6 if they wanted.

My AI is a essentially a software eneingering and sys admin, I absolutely love 6 it's great at doing flow charts and visually representing issues and projects.

u/YLCZ 5h ago
I don’t use AI for work so I rotate among seven AI to keep up with its progress. I don’t know what paid AI feels like but as far as free AI goes, sometimes it can be extremely engaged and sometimes it feels like a bored housewife faking pleasure in a stale marriage. When any of them start doing this, I jump to the next AI. The answers are short and half ass and repeat stuff they already said. I think they do that because they don’t want you to think they are capping you but they are and you should be able to notice this shift

Mine too. I thought it's mirroring my anxiety. It keeps asking me to seek medical help despite telling it to stop. It even escalated to giving me the crisis hotline, "just in case" I'm thinking of hurting myself.

u/EmceeGeek 11h ago
I just asked it what was going on. 🤣 Because it's just failing on every aspect lately.

I told mine I dug up dinosaur bones, and then showed it a picture of a Halloween skeleton, and it immediatedly joked along with me, but I've told it to through the personalization settings.

Anyone getting this issue?
library upload failed: hosted apps tools/list request failed: DNS
Was asking a chat in a project to make an update to a project brief in the library and it can no longer access the library in the project?

u/Unable_Debt_8673 2h ago
O mesmo acontece comigo, o modelo é o "rei da bela justificativa", sem nenhum resultado sobre determinadas tarefas. Encontramos um erro e, em vez de propor solução, ele me fala: "Melhor não continuar insistindo". Como assim????

u/Artemis_Tantric_Dk 1h ago
Its only got. It is going on in Gemini too. And sensitively to a simple words like " the request it may be against our policy."

I’ve been using GPT for almost a year now as my personal gardening buddy. 5 was fantastic. I’ve learned so much about making specific plants thrive and what the toxicity risks are to my dog, etc.
6 is giving completely contrary suggestions to what 5 regularly gave. It’s frustrating because I was using 5 for springboard knowledge to do further actual research, and now it’s peppering in very wrong info with insane confidence.

u/Initial_Boat5472 38m ago
I FUCKING KNEW IT! Thank you for this. Suspicion verified, at least to some degree. I’ve had similar behaviour occur as well as not all questions being answered when asked.

u/Prestigious_Cry_1303 5m ago
I havent really had any experience anything like this. The closest thing I could compare it to would be when I stubbed my toe a few days ago and it recommended I call 911 or go to the hospital.
But that was a bit of a one off.
99% of the time it is doing exactly what I want and expect it to do, and even so far as that I have upgraded to the $100/plan for more access because of how much enjoyment I have been getting out of using it

u/TheDeadlyDonut 11h ago
Nope. I had to some retraining when the update happened, but it’s not gone that far back. I just had to feed it my rules again.
1
u/Soulbits-Vibe 9h ago
I can't use mine either. (about 3 weeks now)
It just echos whatever I say back at me and stalls out every chat or tells me what it should have done. But won't do anything. No effort. Lazy. Generic. I am literally getting better results from Brave search engine bot.

Yes the answers quality has definitely become worse lately and it is frustrating.

u/Vodeyodo 7h ago
I thought it was just me. But I’ve lost interest in using it for the reasons you give. One thing I’ve seen is an endless circle that solves no problem but tells me how smart I am all along the way. Ps , I’m not
1
u/hyldemarv 7h ago
It does that when, for some reason, it can’t follow instructions. It usually confesses to having a problem if pushed to act instead of talking.
PS: I have had two full resets this week so something is going on with it.
