Are you an experienced mod?

Are you an experienced mod?

Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request (again!) Our last thread about this got archived so here’s a new one! No need to comment again if you commented in the last one.

If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!

If you are an experienced moderator who participates here, the mods of this subreddit want to be able to tag you so that we can keep our comment sections a space where every answer comes from someone with experience who is here to help. It really helps us instantly recognize trolls etc who are not tagged.

The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.

If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.

Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users.

Former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Edit: If you commented on the last post about this or sent us a modmail to verify in the past you are all set and do not need to reverify!

Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

How to prove you didn't use AI?

A post on another subreddit was removed for supposedly using AI tools. I knew it would be removed if I used AI so I made sure not to. I even put a disclaimer at the top letting the mods know I was aware of the rule.

500 comments later, my post gets removed for "being written with AI."

How can someone possibly prove they DIDNT use AI? If I know the rule, follow it and still get accused of breaking it, what exactly am I supposed to do?

I'm genuinely curious how moderators expect people to prove something like this.

Are you deleting more posts nowadays?

Been a reddit user for many years and fairly active across a variety of subs. Never had a post removed. I credit reading the sub rules.

Then they made the auto-mod/bot changes and I have had easily 8 posts removed just this year. Typically there is no reason (and I'm not looking for you to answer why because you aren't those mods). I can say for sure they don't break the afformentioned sub rules. The one time a mod actually answered my request for a reason, it was basically. I didn't like it because X. Not something I could have guessed since that was not a rule in the sub and basically boiled down to the mods personal preference.

I'm curious what's changed? With the mod-bot costs up have you expanded the number of human mods so personal taste is having more of an impact on your subs? Are y'all actually removing more posts than before or is it just bad luck on my part? Genuinely curious.

Who moderates the Mods on Reddit and what is a community's recourse when a Mod is abusing their power?

Noticing some subreddits where the users are all clearly against some overstepping by the mods. Are they just out of luck or is there recourse against mods who abuse their power (as agreed upon by the greater community)?

Edit:

Can I make a suggestion - and this is truly my experience and not meant to be combative: Is there a way to make the policies/Code of Conduct readily accessible to the novice, or average, reddit user? I've read a couple of responses to this post that have come with a bit of disappointment or angst attached to them, so I'm sure this has come up here before - but I only asked because I truly didn't even know a code of conduct or report structure existed.

Second edit:
You’re all a bunch of assholes on a high horse. God forbid anyone ask question. Birds of a feather I guess.

have you also moderated on another site besides reddit? if no, I'd like to hear your thoughts (more in topic) if yes - what differences there were, if any?

I am curious about your point of view, since I sometimes mention differences in user experience compared to other sites (discord, instagram, facebook, standalone forums like phpBB), however I have no comparison to how it is to be on your side on reddit, and I'd like to know a bit more?❤️

if you were/are in staff in other places, like discord servers, were there differences in amount of reports, or behaviour of users?

if you have not seen other places, here some of my stats for comparison - forums or communities I moderated, could have anything between 1-1000 daily entries in queues (with varying number of staff members), and policy was to very rarely use any stronger actions than warn or temporary suspension, which could last from 15 minutes to several days. That's what initially surprised me about reddit - in other places where I was staff, it wasn't uncommon to see users with dozens-hundreds of violations and they were not banned. Here I feel like I have to be much more cautious about how I post (of course I am trying, and I think it is going better for me recently. Largely due to ability to know how things feel from your side when I asked in subs like this one)

I wonder if this difference comes from workload that you deal with or are there other reasons? or maybe you personally are more permissive?

Is there an app that automatically hides a user's comment?

His/her comments would appear normal, but in reality, it's actually hidden from the public.

Why do so many popular posts often end up getting locked quickly?

I've noticed some posts tend to get locked (in less than 24 hours, without explanation) if they are being upvoted quickly. It seems to happen frequently for posts relating to politics, but I've even seen it happen in the cats. Why does this happen?

What causes a post to be archived?

So I was just randomly going through my history and I was looking at one post of mine from a good 6+ months ago, and I saw it was archived.

On the other hand, I’ve seen posts from YEARS ago when searching for information on something and you could still like or comment, I’ve seen people revive a 5 year old post, etc.

Is it just an automatic thing that some subs do at a certain point?

Sorry, this post was removed by Reddits filter. Why is that?

All my posts have been removed and whatever post I post is being removed too. Anyone can help?

how does this rule on this sub work ?

Re "This isn’t a place to appeal a ban. If you want insight as to why you were banned you will have to ask the banning mod team, this community is not the subreddit you were banned from."

how does this work , if a MOD immediatly bans you for life and mutes you ? ( asking as a 14 yr user of a sub that had a disgreement with a MOD in a private chat and was instata life time banned and muted)

Can anyone tell me why comments were disabled on my post?

I don’t understand why my post was removed for comments about my symptoms with MCAS, SFN, histamine? I didn’t have anything inappropriate to say.. just asking if others have experienced what I have…

For the Mods who don't, why do you not have any Subreddit-specific Report Reasons?

Some subs simply don't have any report reasons and I'm unsure why. Just wanna see why mods do it.

Why is reddit using such an awful system to pre-filter posts?

I havent used reddit for a long time and mostlyl just read some posts without account.

Now that i made an account it is highly frustrating - my posts are constantly filtered directly by reddit and never published even tough there is absolutely nothing problematic in them.

How is a system that forces people to spam random answers and post viral things to get karma a good system? Or is that just to force more interaction to make the stats of reddit look better? Honestly i woudlnt even wonder due to how agressive they are trying to block mobile browsers where the "app-ad" pretty much blocks you from using it at all...

How do you rank mods in your subreddit?

Do you guys do it by seniority? By some rank? Or do you just keep them sorted in the way they come in?

Why cant i see my upvotes?

Why cant i see my upvotes sometimes? On some of the subs i cant see my upvotes from the comment itself. I have to go to record of comments on my profile? Why?

Someone is abusing the reddit cares system, what do I do?

Not entirely sure this is the place to this. I'm not suicidal, but I am angry.

In one small corner of reddit, someone is initiating the reddit cares message as a form of harassment. The mods of the community can't do anything about it, it seems. I had thought it was just me, but whenever a particularly heated topic comes up, users with certain opinions get the reddit cares message.

Not every time. Not everyone. But enough to see a pattern.

...what can I even do?

How do I report an abusive modmail?

I’ve been getting a 7 day mute every 7 days for 2 months now. It’s clearly done in an attempt to harass and bother me.

How do I stop this ? I can’t message and ask them to stop.

Can I doxx users if mods ask me to?

I got permanently banned in a large sub. the comments in question claimed the picture the OP posted are propaganda pictures with an entire page of text detailing why.
The mods asked me to prove my point using neutral sources or keep the perma-ban. There are 4 problems with their request:
1st, I had said 'it is an opinion'
2nd, I had already proved it IMO.
3rd, The OP was reddit-banned because of it already and I can't browse their post history anymore to prove anything.
4th, They had asked me to IDENTIFY the photographer.
My ban was confirmed and the mods muted me after and included threat of full reddit bans if I make alt-accounts.
What is the right course of action here? I believe name and shame is an actual bannable offense in reddit so that's out.

Do mods manually approve comments?

New to reddit, and I'm not a moderator.

I noticed several "removed by moderator" placeholders for my comments and sometimes when I reach out through mod mail, they end up manually approving those comments so they start showing up. They say they're being removed by automod.

I don't want to keep bugging the mods for those subs to manually approve my comments, so my questions is, do mods generally manually review and approve content anyway?
