My husband (32M) and I (29F) have been together for nine years, married for four. We have a beautiful one-year-old daughter, and I’m currently 11 weeks pregnant with our second child.
My husband has always had an extremely high sex drive, but it’s more complicated than that. He describes his sexual desires as a need to “conquer” women. He seems to need the excitement of pursuing someone new, and without some kind of external sexual outlet, he becomes moody, depressed, and easily irritated. He genuinely believes he needs this to function and be happy.
Over the years, we’ve tried what feels like every possible arrangement to accommodate his needs. I’ve stretched my boundaries, tried to be understanding, and worked incredibly hard to make our marriage successful. But nothing ever seems to be enough.
This July, he attended a friend’s wedding without me. It was a child-free wedding, and our daughter was only 11 months old, so I stayed home with her.
At the wedding, he met a woman in her 40s who lives abroad but was visiting the United States. He described her as a therapist. They ended up having sex. I only found out when I was already 6 weeks pregnant. I think the heightened sensitively of pregnancy made me realize something was going on and I confronted him. (So for those following the timeline, I got me pregnant about a month after sleeping with her at the wedding).
Since then, they’ve developed an ongoing relationship. They text every day. He stays up late talking to her while I’m sleeping.
He has repeatedly assured me that he doesn’t want to replace me, and I believe him. He loves me, wants to remain married, and wants to raise our children together. He just also wants the freedom to pursue sexual experiences and relationships outside our marriage.
Most recently, he spent a week abroad with this woman. And here’s the part that is difficult to admit: I agreed to the trip.
I felt like I had very little choice. I knew how much he wanted to go, and I was afraid of what denying him would mean for our marriage. But I was also genuinely hopeful.
Part of me hoped that spending a week with her would satisfy his curiosity and that he would eventually tire of the relationship. Another part of me hoped that perhaps she would be a moderating influence on him. That having this outlet would make him happier, more patient, and more loving toward me.
I even imagined a future where this other relationship could fade into the background of my life. Something I knew existed but didn’t have to think about very much. If he could get what he needed elsewhere and come home to be a loving husband and father, maybe I could learn to live with it.
Instead, I spent the week at home watching our daughter while he went to wineries, pubs, fancy dinners, and explored a beautiful European city with another woman. All the kinds of experiences I would have loved to share with him.
I’m also working full-time and 11 weeks pregnant.
I am absolutely miserable.
I can’t sleep more than five hours a night. I wake up around 3 a.m. every morning with my mind racing, and I can’t fall back asleep. I’m exhausted, anxious, and heartbroken.
And the worst part is that I don’t even know who to blame. He told me what he wanted. I agreed to let him go. I hoped I could be the kind of wife who could tolerate this, and now I’m discovering that I can’t.
I don’t think he’s going to leave me for her. I believe him when he says he wants to stay married. But I’m starting to understand that the marriage he wants and the marriage I need may be fundamentally incompatible.
I love him. I love our daughter. I love our home and the life we’ve built together. I wanted so badly to grow old with this man and raise our children together.
I don’t want to start over. I don’t want to be a single mother with a toddler and a newborn. I don’t want to lose the family I’ve spent nine years building.
But I also don’t want to spend the rest of my life trying to convince myself that I’m happy with an arrangement that is destroying me.
If a friend told me this story, I know what I would tell her. But when I imagine actually leaving, I feel completely paralyzed.
How do you leave someone you still love, who says he still loves you, when the life he wants is fundamentally incompatible with the life you need?
How do you stop hoping that if you just become a little more understanding, a little more accommodating, or a little more patient, things will finally get better?
