Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

Contractor Killed My Pets

1.1k Upvotes

I am besides myself and don’t know what to do moving forward. we paid over $5,000 to our contractor and some guys he referred to build a shed on the side of our house for our Chinchillas. we wanted them to have their own temperature controlled space. Paid extra for the insulated shed as well as adding about half a foot of insulation on both sides of the shed and putting in a portable AC that our contractor assured us was safe. we had them add a platform to put the AC on, vent it out the shed and even after the assured us it was fully safe to use, we tested it for about a week before putting any animals in it. we noticed the top of the AC unit was blowing a small amount of hot air out of the top so we let our contractor know as we were worried about it. he assured us it was fine and he just taped over it so the air would only blow out the tube (? i have no idea how this all works we trusted he knew what he was doing) everything was fine after that so we put them in.

it has been less than a month and we just woke up to all of them dead. the vent he taped on fell off and it heated from 60° to 100° in an hour while we were asleep. i’m so besides myself and have no idea what to do. is this something that can be pursued for negligence? i’m so devastated as all of this was so avoidable and we bought this specific shed and set up everything the way he told us it would be safe to do so. he promised up and down it was safe. i’ve had one of my babies for over 15 years and i can’t believe he was taken from me like this. please help thank you so much

Insurance [Update] AirBnB host requesting 50k in damages

Hi everybody! It’s been almost a year since my first post here and I finally have an update (please read post linked below for context!). I didn’t respond to a lot of comments in my initial post, but your input was greatly appreciated.

The host decided not to go through Airbnb’s air cover before Airbnb could determine liability on either side. Instead, the host is going through her own renters insurance.

Recently I received a letter in the mail from the host’s insurance stating that I owe $58,000 for water damage- it is alleging that I caused the leak in the shower and stated that they could either go through my homeowners insurance to get the money or get the money from me directly.

I responded with my own records, documenting the time that the shower broke and everything that happened afterwards.

They responded that they “understand my liability position”, but because I was on the property while the damage occurred, I now need to respond with my homeowners insurance or they will look to me for reimbursement.

My problem here is that I know I didn’t directly cause the damage, and this issue would have happened to anyone who used the shower next. The shower was already flooding and unable to turn off before the handle broke off, and the host did not communicate with me during this time to minimize damage.

I just don’t really know what to do next- are they able to sue me because I was on the property while this damage occurred? They have not directly stated this, but keep alluding to it.

Thank you for any help or opinions you may have!
Location: Nevada, USA

Previous post

EDIT: A lot of people are suggesting I just go through my own insurance first- I am a 20 year old and my mom’s name is on the homeowners insurance. She called them and they suggested we try to prove that I am not liable with the hosts insurance before going through my own insurance, because that would be “easier”. Maybe we will try our insurance anyways?

Got subpoenaed as a witness at my job- job is telling me not to go and they'll "handle it"

Location: Anne Arundel County, MD, USA

Hi! I work retail and about 2 months ago, a customer stole ~$600 of merchandise from us. She also purchased something that same day, and used her loyalty account, which had her full name/number/birthday/etc. on it. As required by company policy, we made a police report and gave them all this information as well as security camera footage of the theft. It was all very standard to what I've experienced in my years in retail.

However, I've never been subpoenaed before! Me, my coworker, and my store's assistant manager all received subpoenas mailed to the store. The details say: "You are hereby subpoenaed to appear as the Witness - State for the trial of the charges in the case identified above. Type of Proceeding: Trial - Officer Scheduling".

My assistant manager has been working for the company for many years and said she's been subpoenaed a few times before in this same situation. She went to court once and they didn't end up needing her. Since then she has just sent the information to our Loss Prevention team, who apparently contact the court themselves and send someone from corporate to testify on our behalf. Management says I shouldn't go for my safety, since the person on trial knows my name, face, and where I work, so there could be risk of retaliation, which I agree with. They emailed our LP team all of this information, but we never got a response back from them.

I've been concerned since then that my company actually isn't doing anything and that I'm going to get in trouble for not going. I've talked with both my manager and assistant manager and they've told me not to worry, corporate is handling it and even if they ignored it, the charges will just get dropped, and they're not going to take action against me for $600 of stolen merchandise. I get their points, but I really, really, don't want to be wrong and end up in some sort of trouble over it.

The court date is in two days. Will I be in legal trouble if I trust what my job is telling me and not go? Thank you!

Edit to clarify: My job isn't threatening any actions against me if I decide to go. They are basically just saying it's a waste of my own time, and that they'd rather someone from corporate go in from a safety perspective. So not "you can't go", but more like "don't worry about it." Looking at the advice, however, it seems I should probably go. Luckily I have a late afternoon shift the day of the trial so I can make it to court and my shift without any schedule adjustments.

I did send another email to our Loss Prevention team and District Manager to see if they had any further information on their end, but unless they can give me some concrete confirmation I'll be going to court, it seems!

[IA] Company accidentally shipped me thousands of dollars in merchandise. How long am I legally required to store it?

I recently placed an online order and received everything I purchased. However, the company also shipped me two additional boxes containing thousands of dollars worth of custom-made merchandise intended for another customer.

Both of the additional boxes were addressed to me and shipped via UPS, but the packing list identifies both my order as well as another customer’s. I contacted the company to notify them of the mistake and ask how they wanted to handle it, but I haven’t received a response.

The boxes are quite large and are taking up a considerable amount of space in my apartment. I have no use for the merchandise and don’t particularly want to keep it.

My main concern is my legal responsibility for the merchandise. Am I required to store it and safeguard it indefinitely? Could I be held liable if it becomes damaged or goes missing while in my possession? At what point, if any, can I legally dispose of it if the company doesn’t respond?

I’ve read Iowa Code 556A.1 regarding unsolicited merchandise, but I’m unsure whether it applies to an accidental shipment intended for another customer.

I’m willing to make the boxes available for a prepaid pickup, but I’m not willing to incur expenses, transport them myself, or miss work to correct the company’s mistake.

What are my actual legal obligations in this situation, and what steps can I take to protect myself from liability?

[NY] How can I recover a $37,000 Pokémon card believed stolen from a USPS package and now held by a Delaware auction house?

Location: New York

Auction House Location: Delaware

I’m in New York, and I’m trying to figure out the proper legal process to recover a Pokémon card worth approximately $37,000.
In March, I mailed a card through USPS as part of a transaction. The card never reached its intended recipient, and I believe it was stolen from inside the package. I recently discovered the exact card listed in an auction at Alt XYZ. The auction house is headquartered in San Francisco, and the card is currently being held at its facility in Delaware.
I contacted the auction house and explained the situation. They told me they would need documentation establishing that the card was stolen rather than lost before they could assist with returning it.
I have been trying to get law enforcement involved, but I have encountered jurisdictional issues. I have also contacted the USPS Office of Inspector General regarding the suspected theft.
I want to pursue the proper legal process to establish ownership and prevent the card from being sold or transferred while the matter is investigated.
My questions are:
Under New York or Delaware law, could I file a replevin action to recover the card from the auction house?
Could a court issue an order preventing the auction house from selling or transferring the card while ownership is disputed?
Would I generally need to file in Delaware, where the card is physically located, or could a New York court have jurisdiction?
What type of attorney should I look for to handle this matter?
What evidence would typically be needed to establish ownership and support a claim that the card was stolen from a mailed package?
I’m trying to understand my legal options and the appropriate jurisdiction before taking further action. Thank you.

Bank account opened without consent.

Location: NY state

My local bank was recently bought out by a larger regional bank. I closed my checking account with the local bank a couple of years ago when the merger was announced because I didn’t want to do business with the larger bank. A few of my family members did the same. Recently me and my family members have all started receiving checking account statements for new accounts from the larger bank each with one dollar in them. Is it legal for them to open (or maybe reopen) a checking account for me without my consent?

Employment Law [AZ] Lost My Job Offer Over a Positive Methamphetamine Hair Test Despite Never Using It.

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

I’m honestly at a loss for words and looking for some legal guidance.

I recently accepted an offer for a corporate position making $31 an hour. I was supposed to start October 26 and had already submitted my two weeks notice at my previous job, returned my equipment, and completed most of my onboarding.
Everything changed when my preemployment hair follicle test came back positive for methamphetamine. I have NEVER used methamphetamine or any other hard drugs. I don’t even smoke marijuana, so this result makes absolutely no sense to me.

I’m currently a nursing student and have worked in healthcare for years. I’ve seen firsthand how substance use can affect patients, and I’m someone who avoids taking strong pain medication even when prescribed. This result is completely inconsistent with my history.

I immediately disputed the result and paid out of pocket for additional testing. I completed a urine test at the same collection facility, which came back negative, and provided those results to the employer. I understand urine and hair tests have different detection windows, so I also paid $199 for an independent hair test and am awaiting those results.

After researching the laboratory that processed my original specimen, I found multiple online reviews from individuals alleging similar unexpected positive results. I understand these reviews don’t establish that an error occurred, but they raised additional concerns about the testing process.

The testing administrator informed me that it would cost another $250 to retest my original specimen. I’m hesitant because I genuinely question whether the specimen was properly identified and actually belongs to me. If there was a mixup during collection or processing, I’m concerned that retesting the same specimen wouldn’t resolve that issue.
Despite contacting HR, disputing the result, and providing my negative urine test, I haven’t received a meaningful response. My onboarding access was removed, and I’m now facing unemployment after already resigning from my previous employer.
I’ve spent my own money trying to investigate this result, and the situation has caused significant financial and emotional stress. I understand employers have drug testing policies, but I’m concerned about what legal protections exist when an applicant disputes the accuracy of a test that affects their employment.

I’m trying to understand whether a negative independent hair test could support a negligence claim against the laboratory or testing administrator, whether I should obtain the chain of custody documentation before paying for a retest, and whether lost wages could potentially be recoverable after resigning from my previous job in reliance on the offer.

This was a non DOT corporate position, and I would appreciate guidance on what type of attorney handles these disputes and what legal steps I should consider.

Old crosses found on Property

Location: Georgia
I have recently started putting up a fence for my horse and as I was clearing land I found around 40-50 wooden crosses on my property. My property backs up to a cemetery which has even more wooden crosses. I am going to section it off due to safety reasons for my horse and obviously am not going to take the crosses down. My question is, do I need to add a gate or access for the public/people that do upkeep on the gravesites? Also, is there a specific distance that the fence needs to be from the graves?

Landlord Tenant Housing Landlord/owner notified of their intent to move back into the house 2 months before lease ends

Location: Pierce county, Washington

My mom, friend, and I rent a house from this lady who moved to California earlier this year. Our lease and move in date started on February 14th, 2026, with the lease ending March 15th, 2027. Yesterday we received an email from the owner “formally notifying” us that she intends to move back into the residence on January 16th, 2027. She said we are welcome to continue living here with $200 off of our monthly rent on a month-month basis along with other terms and agreements. Through my work, I do receive a free 30 minute consultation with an attorney and am waiting to schedule that but in the mean time i’m hoping to get a couple of answers and some advice. Our main question is, being she is moving back in before the end of the written lease and agreement, can we move out now or would we be breaking the lease? Literally any advice and answers are welcome! Thank you!

Step mom saying she has rights to my children after their father passed (Missouri)

1.9k Upvotes

Location: Missouri
My kids are 6, 4, and 3 their father and I were never married and never had a legal custody agreement. The kids only started going to their fathers house in December of 2025 and inconsistently went to his house until June of 2026 (so a 6 month period) they have not been back to their dads since July and he came to my home once in September to visit them for a couple of hours and his wife was not with him. On October 2nd 2026 bio dad passed away and his wife is now claiming she has parental rights to my children still. They have a safe home with me (their bio mother) and have everything they need. She is now threatening to take me to court to get custody of my children. Is this a possibility? Also to add my children have not talked about or asked about step mom since they were last at bio dads home in July.

Neighbor headaches

Location: Baker County, Oregon

No matter how vague I make this post, people will know who I am...so I may as well just tell the story as best I can. My husband and I purchased our home in Sumpter, Oregon, a rural incorporated town of about 200 people in 2021, and moved into our home in 2022. The original house was built in 1932 from local pine. On the property, and right on the property line is a building that was constructed in 1886 and has been everything from a post office to a house of ill repute in its lifetime. The previous owner ran it as an antique shop and left much of the inventory in the building. Long before we, or our neighbor who owns the lot directly opposite the exterior wall of the building have been in the area, support stilts were placed to keep the foundationless building from crumbling and being lost to history entirely.

In 2024, our 1932 home burned down to the ground and we lost everything. We have been out of the area for almost two years and when all other housing/shelter options had been depleted, we moved into the 1886 building in June of this year and just weeks ago received our certificate of occupancy to move into the home that we built where the 1932 house had stood.

Since moving back, and more than likely the whole time we've been gone (we do have security cameras on our property), our neighbor on the other side of the 1886 building has been using our property as though it is hers. She has her own food truck business she runs on her lot, and after informing several people whom we found traipsing through our property that it was a private area, those people informed us that the food truck lady told them it was okay to be there.

We know that the town is situated along a state highway and technically the parking in front of our building is public access, but after shooing so many people away, one Saturday shortly before we could move back home, I sat out in our front yard and told anyone who parked directly in front of our building that there was public parking across the street. The food truck neighbor stormed out of her food truck and yelled/screamed at me to leave her customers alone. I informed her (yelling back, honestly) that she is zoned two parking spaces for her business and if she unblocked them, there wouldn't be an issue.

We just left it at bitterness for a few days. Then, she left a nasty note on the windows of that 1886 building, to which I responded with my own note left on the door of her business. The note I left her stated that in being called to love our neighbors, I can understand that we are both fearful of the same thing: maintaining our way of life. Without her customers, her business and way of life is jeopardized, and after returning back home, all we want is our own peace. I went on to say that her attitude, however, has been that whatever is hers is hers and whatever is ours is hers. It is not. There is not one part of our building that belongs to her and she needs to keep her business and her life on her side; we will do the same.

Now...here is where I was a super meanie, apparently. The whole town along the state highway decorates for holidays, Halloween included. Most of our decorations burned up, but since Halloween is my birthday and I love everything about the season, we have everything from gravestones to witches. I know little miss vendor hates witches, and the youngest sibling energy I have didn't really care. We found a whole box of decorations that survived, all witchy things. And we decorated the porch of our 1886 building.

The next day, I woke up to her screaming like a banshee, calling me a literal witch, as well as a witch with a capital B and sounding almost animalistic that I had better take down "those horrid things off of her property" if I knew what was good for me. "You don't know who you're messing with, [Witch with a capital B]!" I was all tucked into our new and safe home when I saw her storming onto the porch of the 1886 building and tearing at our decorations. So, I called the sheriff, as they have jurisdiction in this area.

Since then, she has been ordered to take all of her decorations off of her building, and now she is demanding that the support stilts be removed. My husband and I both know that with the fragility of the building (which we had been saving to restore since we purchased, but literally every penny we have to our name has gone into rebuilding our home after it burned down), the moment those stilts are removed, the entire structure will crash in and cause damage to not only her business but her trailer that she lives in.

We have had our property surveyed by the county; yesterday she hired a local surveyor who is known to be underhanded and sleezy (sp?). We just want to protect our peace and our assets. Is there any legal advice we could receive that would protect us from liability from potential damages, or better yet, get her to keep to her own side and leave us alone?

Thanks for reading

Tl:dr: nutso neighbor claims that our property is hers and is threatening us in a variety of ways. All we want is our peace.

Other Civil Matters My father (who is being sued in court and filing bankruptcy) is the co signer on my car loan. If they seize his assets, can they take my car?

Location: Georgia

The company my father worked for is suing him for $400,000. Basically he signed a paper saying he wouldn’t contact their customers for business but did so anyways (allegedly). They will most likely seize all his assets and property since he doesn’t have the money.

I decided to finance a new 2024 Honda civic two years ago, and my father offered to co sign for me to improved my chances of getting approved. I’m the primary owner of the car as listed on Hondas finance website.

Can the court or creditors seize the car as his property since he’s technically a co-signer?

I’m in Texas, his court case is in Georgia.

National Grid wants to expand its easement on my property in Upstate NY. How is an ordinary homeowner supposed to fight this without going broke?

I’m hoping someone here has dealt with National Grid, utility easements, eminent domain, or property rights in New York because I’m honestly at my wit’s end. I own over 20 wooded acres in Upstate NY. My house sits back in the woods for a reason. I value my privacy, my trees, and the peaceful surroundings I’ve worked hard to maintain. National Grid already has an existing powerline easement out back the entire length of my property. Now they want to expand it, remove mature trees, and install THREE transmission Monopoles on my land. My backyard is only about 125 yards from the opposite side of existing powerlines. Right now, I can’t see the existing towers because of my trees. If this project goes forward as proposed, I’m going to lose that privacy and have to look at three to 6 poles visible from my house, 3 of which will be put on my land

And their offer for the additional easement rights and 3 monstrosities? Approximately $3,800.

I’ve been dealing with this for over a year and am am on my THIRD right-of-way agent. I’ve repeatedly tried to get answers about why they can’t expand on the opposite side of the existing powerline where nobody lives instead of coming closer toward my house.

I initially allowed them onto my property because I was trying to understand the scope of the project after months of getting the runaround, but have since told them stay off. I had to kick them off once. I’ve contacted the New York State Public Service Commission. They specifically advised me in writing that approval of the project does NOT automatically give National Grid rights to my land. I’ve contacted countless attorneys. I’ve run into conflicts of interest involving National Grid, firms that don’t handle this type of case, and attorneys who simply cannot help.

I finally found an attorney willing to consider representing me. The retainer is $2,500, the hourly rate is $450, and I could also payfor surveying and other expenses. The attorney warned me that fighting an eminent domain proceeding could cost tens of thousands of dollars, with National Grid potentially getting the additional easement anyway. How is an average homeowner supposed to afford that?!??!? I don’t want to give them any more land or additional easement rights.

I’m exhausted. I’ve cried. I’ve been beyond upset and I feel like I’m getting nowhere.

I’m genuinely looking for advice/ info:

Has anyone successfully challenged or modified a National Grid easement expansion in New York?

Can a utility be required to explain why it chose one side of an existing corridor instead of the other?

Has anyone managed to get poles relocated or tree clearing reduced?

How do you get an independent evaluation of the impact on property value, mature trees, and privacy?

Are there NY property-rights organizations, advocacy groups, or attorneys who handle these cases on a contingency, fixed-fee, or limited-scope basis?

Has anyone challenged a utility’s entry into a proposed easement area before the additional rights were acquired?

I should not have to go broke just to understand and protect my property rights. If anyone has dealt with this or knows where I can turn for actual help, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Other Civil Matters Hair salon charged concurrent hours while working on 2 clients at once

Location: Georgia

I may have worded that badly but basically I requested to book an appointment at a salon for me and my 12yr old son on the same day. We’ve done this at several salons and it’s usually lots of fun.

The stylist messaged me to confirm the appointment time and said “So both of your services will be hourly. Both are considered color corrections and then specialty colors as well. The haircuts are included in these services. So both will be $125/hour.”

(Since I’ve had many color correction and speciality color appointments before and we have done this several times before at other salons in Georgia, I assumed the cost would be roughly the same as usual (typically it costs around $500-600 total when we both go to the salon together and takes 4-5 hours). I budgeted for $800 just in case though bc you never know.)

When we get to the salon, it turns out the owner is the only person that works there aside from her assistant. So she has us each sit in a seat and proceeds to go back and forth working on one of us for a little while and then working on the other for a bit for the next 6.5 hours. I regretted booking the appointments together mostly bc one of us always had to just sit there for 20-30 mins at a time while she worked on the other person.

My kids hair is done first so he has to sit and wait another 30 or so mins until I’m done. I go to pay and she tells me it’s $1,684. As soon as I heard the total i felt a panic attack coming on so I just shoved my card at her and left.

Now that I’ve had so much time to think about it, I feel like she double charged me. If I had booked the appointments at the exact same salon but at 2 different times it would’ve cost half that amount. And I was never told that there was only one stylist and she’d be charging me for concurrent hours. If she had done my hair and then done my child’s hair, we still wouldve been done in the same amount of time and i would have only paid around $850.

I messaged her and asked for an itemized receipt and she said there is no itemized receipt bc it’s an hourly service.

Is there anything I can do? Would this be worth going to small claims or something? It’s well past the time frame for disputing with my bank (I used my debit card and this was in 2025).

I moved into this apartment building in July that is managed by a property management company that operates on a national level. They took over the building I moved into at the top of 2026, I believe, so they are new to managing this building (and the 3 or so sister buildings in the same area). I have been having multiple issues with them since moving in.

When we (I live with a roommate, this is a 2 bedroom apartment) first moved in, two of the main issues we had was that our dryer was nonfunctional and my roommate's room simply did not have a door on it. There was a lot of back and forth with them to get both of these fixed (part of the reason we liked this place is because laundry units were included), and they eventually fixed the dryer after about 3 weeks and replaced the door within about a week. The front office gave me a call that I missed and left a voicemail that stated they were going to be crediting our account with a $150 concession for our troubles within the first month (thank God I have the voicemail as evidence now, just in case). I checked the app they make us use to make payments and see the concession on there as it shows we owe $-150. Cool. By the time our rent got posted in August, however, that -150 was nowhere to be found. It showed us as owing 150 dollars more than we should have given that concession. My roommate paid it out of fear that they would retaliate, but they assured us that it was showing up on their end and they weren't sure why it wasn't on our end. So in September, we didn't pay that extra 150 it showed us as owing. Our grace period for payment is 5 days after the 1st. Once that passed, we received an email stating we owed money and needed to pay it ASAP to avoid an eviction being filed. I went to the office and discussed this with them and they said it was strange that we received that email since their end showed us not owing everything, and they even showed me what they see on their end. They told me we didn't have to worry and that they wouldn't be filing an eviction. All was fine until this month, October, and this time we got a letter on the door that basically said they'd file an eviction in 14 days if we didn't pay the amount of $150 to them (posted on our door on the 6th at around 8pm). Of course, I start freaking out. It's also 8pm, so I cannot contact them until the morning. I went in the next day first thing in the morning, and they basically tell me it was just another big accident. They once again showed me that we don't owe anything, and seemed confused as to how this got printed and posted on our door if it shows that we don't owe anything on their end. They tried to play it off as though it was a fully automated system, but I pointed out that they still had to physically put the paper on our door, even if it was printed from an automatic list. The woman who is in charge of the accounts in the office signed the paper with a note saying "Confirmed $0.00 balance as of 10/07/2026" complete with her signature. She said we are all good. Yesterday, 10/20/26, we get an email stating they will be filing for an eviction suit the following day (today, 10/21/26) if we do not pay our balance. I of course very angrily call them and they try to play it off by saying "Oh that's not done from our office, that's done by somebody else. We don't control what they send you." And I said that they should contact them to get this issue resolved since this is a repeated problem. She basically said she would try, but it's likely that we'll keep receiving these messages and keep going in circles with them. I'm beyond irritated that we are being harassed like this over something they keep assuring us we do not owe. We emailed requesting proof that no eviction suit would be filed against us and are waiting for a response.

Now, for my question. Of course, if they actually do file an eviction, I will be seeking out a lawyer. Let's say they don't, though, and we keep receiving these emails and papers saying they're going to evict us but never do. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Am I helpless here, or is this considered harassment? I'm so exhausted from dealing with this.

EDIT: As a small addition, they responded to our email as I posted this stating they fixed the issue on their ledger and that we don't have a balance. We'll see if they actually fixed the ledger issue or not.

Former Job claiming I was fired when she was not

Hello!

I recently applied to a CNA job for the classes and everything was going smoothly, however, this employer calls a day later saying that they called my last 2 former employers. They then ask me if I had ever been fired from a job, I say no. The HR person then says that they will get both sides of the “story”.

30 minutes later they call me back and say they’ll still hire me, but want me to work in a lower position for an extra month before they will begin my CNA classes.

I asked if there was any information I could get on what they said and they said “legally we cannot tell you”. Is this true?

I have evidence through text and email that I have resigned from my previous 2 positions. One I left the same day I sent the text to them. The other i put in my two weeks and left a post email explaining why I left.

Is there any way I can see what job is saying I got fired and anything I can do about it?

Accident at wedding

Location: Ohio
We had our wedding and reception on 10/10 in a city owned building. My brother in law and sister were our videographer and photographer for our wedding because that’s what they do for work. During the reception, a sound panel fell off of the ceiling and landed on my brother in law and hit him in the head while he was working. He began to have convulsions and has been in the hospital for 10 days and just went to a rehab facility.

After the one sound panel fell, which weighs about 60 pounds I’d say, we looked and saw another panel only hanging on by one side.

We read the rental agreement and it has this clause in it and was wondering if we could be held for anything. My sister has an attorney and he hasn’t said anything yet, but they have to wait until he gets better to fully understand the cost of things is what she told me. She said her attorney also hasn’t said anything about this but it was brought to my attention today. Thank you!

I can’t seem to add a picture so here’s the clause I’m worried about:

Indemnification:
• The Renter assumes complete responsibility and liability for any and all claims, losses, damages, expenses, penalties and judgements relating to or arising from the event.
• The Renter further agrees to save and hold harmless the City of____from and against all claims, losses and liability arising
out of damage to property; injury to or death of persons occasioned by or in connection with the acts of omissions of the Renter or of the Renter's agent; or the use of any motor vehicle or other equipment or property in connection therewith; and from and against all claims, losses, liability for costs, fees, and attorney expenses in connection and therewith.

School Related Issues Girl in college spreading rumors that I physically assaulted her

Location: New Hampshire

Throwaway account, leaving out some details to try and avoid doxxing myself

Had a situation roughly a month ago where I caught a girl stealing from me at a party, had some arguments then left, here's the exact sequence.

1.) Initial confrontation from the stealing

2.) Later bump into her again while pushing through the crowd and have a verbal argument

3.) Mood is ruined at this point so I leave early with a friend (out of my own will, not kicked out)

Few days later, one of my friends is talking to them at the food court, later comes up to me and says "man they were talking crazy shit about you" and tell me what they were saying. Few hours later I see them post the exact same stuff on YikYak. (I have this screenshotted and have remained in touch with my friend that told me all of that)

At that point, they're not accusing me of full-on assault yet. It's like petty high school drama that's annoying but relatively inconsequential because it dies down pretty fast. However, some weeks go by and apparently the rumor has shifted into me shoving her into a wall which is like a million times more serious because that's fucking assault.

I think the sequence of escalation is pretty clear and the events that occurred at the party don't line up with that at all (crowded room, wasn't kicked out, no confrontation from the crowd, I left before her willingly). Feels like if a guy pushed a girl into a wall at a college party the people there would make a pretty big deal about it for the most part as well as the girl actively trying to get that guy kicked out (but that also seems largely like perfect victim fallacy).

I feel like my reputation elsewhere has been largely positive; character testimonials would help me a lot. But I am noticing some people have told me they've heard that rumor.

I'm currently between escalating this to the school conduct board (which would be pretty time intensive during midterm season) and getting a lawyer to send a cease and desist. I'd also be open to other options if they exist. Just kind of stuck on what to do.

Update on the mustang situation

Location: Tennessee

UPDATE:

For those who don’t know, my 2000 Mustang was allegedly scrapped without my permission after a whole mess involving towing and repairs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/s/Vw4KCOTNaQ

I filed a police report and a complaint with Tennessee Consumer Affairs, and that situation is still ongoing.

I did finally get my $138 towing service refund, and I also managed to get another car, a Chevrolet.

Now I’m just planning on suing after all of this bs that went down.

Neighbor refuses to split termite fumigation costs for our attached duplex. What are our options? (California)

Location: San Diego, CA
Looking for advice on how to handle a termite dispute with our neighbor.
We purchased one half of an attached duplex in July 2025. The neighbor owns the other half and has lived there for over 30 years. There is no HOA.
Shortly after moving in, we discovered evidence of drywood termites. We had a professional inspection, and the inspector recommended tent fumigation. Because the two homes are attached, we were advised that coordinating treatment for the entire structure would be the appropriate approach.
We first approached the neighbor in September 2025. Since then, we’ve made numerous attempts to coordinate treatment, including in-person conversations, emails, and certified mail. It’s now been over a year without acknowledgment.

Here’s where things get interesting:
Our neighbor initially said she hadn’t noticed any evidence of termites on her side. She eventually had her own inspection performed in September 2026.
I happened to speak directly with her inspector that day. He described substantial termite droppings in her attic, extensive fascia damage, and also recommended tent fumigation.
However, our neighbor characterized the findings as evidence of past termite damage with no active infestation. She also referred to the problem as “your termite situation.”
We’ve shared our inspection report with her and requested a copy of hers, but she hasn’t provided it.

The disagreement:
She says she doesn’t want her home tented because she’s concerned about chemical exposure to her family, pets, and property.
She eventually agreed to allow fumigation as a “concession,” provided we pay 100% of the fumigation cost. She considers paying for her own temporary accommodations and cleaning expenses during fumigation her contribution.
What concerns me most is that she hasn’t proposed any alternative treatment plan or addressed the potential consequences of leaving the termite problem unresolved.
We’re essentially at a standstill.

My questions:
In California, are there laws governing shared maintenance or termite treatment expenses between owners of an attached duplex without an HOA?
Can one owner refuse to participate in treatment recommended for the attached structure?
Would a party-wall agreement or recorded property documents potentially establish shared maintenance responsibilities?
Has anyone successfully resolved a similar situation through mediation or an attorney?
If she refuses to contribute, what practical options do we have to protect their property without assuming the entire cost?
We simply want a reasonable solution that protects both homes and fairly allocates the expense.
Any advice or experience with similar California duplex disputes would be appreciated.

Employment Law Morning Sickness Termination

Location: Iowa, USA

I am about 6 weeks pregnant and recently started a remote job at a large company (thousands of employees). I am still in my training period, and training requires my camera to be on the whole time.

I have had severe morning sickness. I cannot keep any food down and have been vomiting bile, and I cannot leave the bathroom for long stretches, so working even from home was not possible. I had already told my employer that I am pregnant and experiencing severe sickness.

I called out for one day using the company's absence reporting system, following the procedure exactly, and I have proof of the call. I then received an email from my manager stating that the absence put me over the attendance point limit for trainees and that exceeding the limit during training can lead to termination for attendance.

I have since sent a written request for a reasonable accommodation under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, explaining that the absence was due to pregnancy-related illness, and I offered to provide documentation from an urgent care visit and from my OB.

I know I am not eligible for FMLA yet because I just started. My questions:

  1. Can they legally terminate me for an absence caused by pregnancy-related illness that I disclosed to them?
  2. Does the PWFA protect me during a training period, this early in employment?
  3. Is there anything else I should be doing right now to protect myself?

Predatory Homebuyer Help

The last few years have been very rough, and I'm not able to afford my home anymore. I reached out to one of the flyers sent out by a company that buys homes, and I called them out of having very few options. I thought that they bought it outright to flip and sell or to rent out, but instead, they put it on the market while to try to sell outright. I thought it was weird, but I figured this was just normal. The closing date was set a month out, and one week before the closing date they came back to me and said that they would need to reduce the price significantly and push the closing date out by another month. This felt like extortion or something akin to it, but my options were still very limited. I accepted the reduction and pushed it out another month.

Cut to today, literally one day before the closing. They are doing the same thing again. This doesn't feel right to me. I guess first of all, is it legal for them to keep pushing the closing date out? Second, do I have any recourse here? I'm not a litigious person, and in all honesty, I just want to get my house sold and move on with my life. But I'm not above pursing legal action if it is warranted. Any advice would be much appreciate.

I can also name the company if that helps. I wasn't sure if that was allowed or was frowned upon, as I do not post on Reddit.

Hit head-on by a car fleeing police in Vallejo, CA in 2020. Brain injury, claim stalled for years, city never gave me the report. Is it too late, and who helps?

In January 2020, overnight, I was driving under 10 mph in Vallejo, California when a juvenile driver being chased by Vallejo police at high speed through a residential area hit me head-on. My car was totaled. I have a frontal lobe brain injury, an aneurysm behind my eyes that was surgically treated in September 2024, neck and back injuries, and ongoing memory and executive function problems that make paperwork and deadlines very hard. I was homeless for about two years afterward.

My insurer's notes from the time say the other car was running from police. The City has never given me the incident report or any pursuit records, and I don't know whether it was recorded as a pursuit or as a hit and run.

My claim with the California Victim Compensation Board has stalled for years. The representative assigned to it works inside the Vallejo courthouse, and I was told over the phone that my requests were another office's jurisdiction. Almost all of this was verbal, so I have little on paper from 2020 to 2024. I have prepared a late claim against the City but have not filed it.

Location: California (Vallejo / Solano County)

My questions:

  1. Because of my injury, can I still file a claim against the city this many years later, and what evidence helped others?

  2. What kind of attorney takes a pursuit-crash case like this, and what do they want to see first?

  3. How do I get the report and the pursuit records the city won't release?

  4. Who can I go to when a state compensation claim is stuck?

I have the paperwork and can share it with an attorney. Thank you for any direction.
