Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Windows 10 Is there any way to get windows10 to shut up about updates because I can't actually do them, or should I get the upgrades I need?

As the title says, I cannot update my PC and I know why I can't. Used the PC health check app, says I need TPM 2.0 enabled (which I don't think I can do), and my processor isn't supported for windows 11 (it's an Intel Core i3-4030U CPU @ 1.90GHz, I'm saying this because I would like to know what exactly that does and if I actually should get a new CPU?? I know absolutely nothing about computers so please bear with me). The OS build is 19041.1415 and I believe it is 12 years old incase that's important.

So is there a way to get my PC to stop yelling at me for updates because I really do not care about them (unless I really, really should get upgrades for my PC??? Again, I seriously know nothing at all about this crap, that's why I'm here) and all they have proven to be is annoying. I've checked settings and found nothing, so I'm thinking it's either elsewhere in some other settings-type thing, or I'm stuck battling it until I can afford to upgrade it. I'm hoping this is the right subreddit to ask this, apologies if I somehow managed to misread it.

Windows 11 Most recent Oct 2026 windows 11 updates negatively affected gaming performance for anyone else? My RTX 5080 is now stuck at 75% usage in all games

• Upvotes

Not sure if this is due to the most recent set of Windows updates or the Nvidia driver update, as I unfortunately installed both today. I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this after the most recent Windows updates this month.

I play at 5k2k ultrawide with a Ryzen 9800x3D so should be GPU limited. Last week GPU was pegged at 99% usage as expected, today it starts off at 95-99% but quickly falls to 75% and stays there no matter what, and my FPS has decreased accordingly. Have seen this behavior in multiple games today.

No overclocks or custom voltage settings. Windows is set to prefer maximum power as is the NV app. HAGS is on. Did a clean driver install with DDU. Not sure what else to try. I did attempt to roll back the windows updates and the issue still persists.gamed

Windows 11 Weird Issue with Flashing Windows - Anyone Else?

Not much to say that cant be explained by the video. I have this weird problem where clicking, especially spam clicking, in most games causes my screen to flash, the game to freeze for a split second, and the taskbar to flash up as well. One thing to note is that this doesn't happen in fortnite, possibly due to a different type of input handling. I've also tried roblox and a visual novel, which experiences the same issue. Note that this only happens in games. Anything else (documents, browser, editor, file explorer) is completely fine.

PC specs:

Windows 11 Pro, 10.0.26200 build 26200

RTX 3060Ti running driver version 595.79

16GB DDR5 RAM

i5-13600K

ASRock Z790 LiveMixer

Razer DeathAdder V2 Mouse

Ajazz AK820 Pro Keyboard

In the video I show some of the options that ChatGPT suggested I change/disable, here is a list of things I've already tried:

- DDU clean install of GPU drivers

- Uninstallation of all USB device Drivers

- Disabled enhance pointer precision

- Removed xbox game bar

- Disabled GameInput Service

- Capped FPS at 141 using RivaTuner

- Changed Nvidia Co. Pan. 3D settings as seen in video

- Disabled fullscreen optimisation

- Disabled G-Sync

- Disabled Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

Windows 11 Update to 26H2 and all others fail (W11 Pro)

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I have Windows 11 Pro and am unable to perform any updates since the release of 26H2. It downloads, gets to around 40%, then rolls back. I have tried stopping/restarting the update service, I have used DISM and sfc multiple times, I have tried to download media from windows and I can get as far as the choose whether to keep files and both options to keep files/settings are greyed out. I have uninstalled malwarebytes and on defender alone. Does anyone know of some troubleshooting tips or resolutions because I cannot seem to find any.

Thanks again.

EDIT: Automod asked for an image of system details so https://imgur.com/Gu9gEf8 As for error code, that is https://imgur.com/g5unVXr --> This same error code applies to 26H2 as well...it just isn't showing here

Windows 11 Windows 11 Startup and Shutdown Sounds — Anyone Got Them Working?

Thumbnail

I love the classic Windows startup and shutdown sounds, from Windows 95/98 and XP to Vista and Windows 7.

I have Windows 11 Pro on my Dell Latitude 5450, and I don't think I've heard a startup or shutdown sound in ages. Maybe it played a few times in the past, but I honestly don't remember.

I've checked the sound settings, enabled everything, and even replaced the sound files with my favorite classic Windows sounds, but nothing works.

Has anyone managed to get the startup and shutdown sounds working consistently on Windows 11? Any tricks or settings I'm missing?

I'd love to bring back that nostalgic Windows startup sound every time I turn on my laptop!

Windows 11 Unexplained RAM use up to 97%!

Thumbnail

My system keeps running out of memory, and it gets slower the longer it’s been up. Task Manager says 30.2 / 31.1 GB in use (97%), but the process list only adds up to roughly 4 GB (Chrome at 1.9 GB is the biggest). I can’t find where the rest is going.

I tried troubleshooting this with Claude but I am not super technical and it got very confusing. Copying in the details Claude says might be useful for me to share with ya'll:

System: Windows 11, 32 GB DDR5 (2 of 4 slots, 4800 MT/s), AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT plus integrated Radeon graphics, NVMe boot drive and a few USB drives.

Task Manager (Performance tab):

  • In use: 30.2 GB (418 MB compressed), Available: ~1 GB, Cached: 716 MB
  • Committed: 45.4 / 73.1 GB. It rose to 47.6 GB about 10 minutes later with no new apps open.
  • Paged pool 783 MB, Non-paged pool 1.1 GB

Poolmon (paged pool view):

  • Total paged pool is only about 785 MB, and the largest tag (MmSt) is about 81 MB.
  • Everything listed looks like normal Windows tags (MmSt, Toke, SeAt, Ntff, FMfn, Gpbm, etc.), and nothing is anywhere near large enough to explain the gap.
  • I haven’t yet captured the non-paged view.

RAMMap, Use Counts tab (total 32,624,952 K):

  • Process Private: 4.8 GB
  • Mapped File: 1.95 GB
  • Page Table: 1.49 GB
  • Non-paged Pool: 1.35 GB
  • Paged Pool: 0.58 GB
  • System PTE: 0.55 GB
  • Driver Locked: 32 MB
  • Unused: 20.9 GB, of which 20.68 GB is Active (Standby is almost nothing)

What I’ve ruled out:

  • I suspected qBittorrent’s memory-mapped I/O, so I closed it before running RAMMap. Mapped File is only 1.95 GB, so that isn’t it.
  • Shared GPU memory in Task Manager is near zero for both GPUs.
  • Kernel pool isn’t big enough to hold this memory.
  • Windows Defender deep scan turned back negative

Windows 11 Need assistance on Windows crash

My Windows 11 4070Ti Ryzen 7800 3core 32 GB of ram is constantly inconsistently crashing. It doesn't matter if i'm playing a game or just watching youtube, my PC will get a blue screen and force restart itself. This is happening every 30 minutes or so up to a couple of hours.

Event viewer is giving the warning "The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load.Device: ROOT\DISPLAY\0000 Status: 0xC0000365" EVERY time before the "critical Event 41 Kernel-Power" crash happens.

I have tried reinstalling graphics drivers, repairing memory and other files, seeing if its peripherals and I can't seem to get it to stop happening. If any one has some advice or has had something similar happen any help would be greatly appreciated because i've already tried most of what i've found on google and have had no luck.

Windows 11 I cant tether my iphone to my hp anymore

Before I factory reset my pc ~a year ago, I was able to use my lightning cable to tether my Ip13 to my HP in order to get a stable connection when playing games, as just using my Iphones mobile hotspot and connecting to that on my computer wirelessly would give me unstable and constantly fluctuating ms after a few minutes if play, idk why but it always just goes haywire after a few minutes even if I am doing absolutely nothing on my iphone. Meanwhile when I put the same sim card i ised for my iphone in my android phone and do the same thing, wherher wired or not my ms is stable when playing games on my pc.

I have tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, checking themat the drivers are there and fir whatever reason it just doesnt work anymore and I cant use usb tethering to connect my iphone data to my pc.

Windows 7 Windows 7 printing stopped working after failed Windows 10 upgrade

I attempted to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The update seemed to be going fine until it failed and displayed “Undoing changes made to your computer” before booting me back into Windows 7.

Everything seems to be working normally except printing.
When I try to print, the job appears in the queue and goes through “Spooling,” then “Printing,” and finally “Deleting.” The job disappears, but nothing ever prints.

I’m using an HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 connected via USB, but I also tried printing over the network with the same result. I also tested an HP LaserJet M15w, and it has the exact same issue.

Both printers work when printing from my phone over the network. Additonally, I didn't have this issue before the update attempt, so the issue seems to be with Windows.

**Things I’ve tried:**
Uninstalled the HP printer software through Control Panel and reinstalled the drivers.
Tried printing over USB and over the network.
Tested a second HP printer with the same results.
Tried printing from a second administrator account, but the issue persists.
Ran the Windows System File Checker (sfc /scannow), which found no integrity violations.
Ran the HP diagnostic tool, but it didn’t identify or fix the problem.
Another issue I’ve noticed is that Windows Explorer crashes and restarts when I try printing from Printer Properties.
The problem started immediately after the failed Windows 10 upgrade and rollback.

Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this without having to reinstall Windows? Could the failed upgrade have damaged the Windows printing subsystem or left behind a driver/configuration issue?

I have a backup with acronis from before the update but I got an error when I tried restoring and I really just need the printer issue resolved.

Windows 11 how do I even install windows?

Post image
1 Upvotes

preface: I have been using linux for a long time, but I would like to have a windows partition for some games that are a bit wonky on linux (some flight sims mainly). Some years ago I bought a key for windows, however I never have managed to install it (the irony I know)

first it was complaining about some drivers missing (it didnt specify which), now I think I got past this part but I am getting this error when the setup reaches 77%. And I'm stumped, I don't know how to debug this, nor I have any information on how to proceed, I can just click and reboot.

I think it may not be liking my partition layout (I have debian installed on the same machine), but honestly I can't just switch it without erasing a ton of data, nor I want to.

Windows 11 Speakers disconnecting and volume sets to 0

Basically I have an Edifier M60 connected to my PC via USB-C. I have ruled out the speakers as the source of the problem since it doesn't have a power-saving or sleep mode. I don't even have a good grasp on what triggers it because sometimes it stays connected even without audio playing for a long time but when no audio is played for a while after playing games or music, the device disconnects. I have tried some fixes I saw online which still didn't solve the issue like:

  • Disabling USB selective suspend setting in power options
  • Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in multiple USB controllers under Device Manager

Right now what I do when I encounter this issue is turning the speakers off and on then readjust the volume since it got set to 0.

Windows 11 Laptop isn't able to mirror to tv anymore for no apparent reason?

Hi guys,

As the title says, I'm trying to mirror my laptop (HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh0xxx) to my TV (Samsung Q70), like I have done before, yet suddenly my laptop and TV are refusing to connect or even recognise each other as connectable devices. My mum's tried her laptop on it (Don't know the specs, apologies) and she made it slightly further, but the connection fails on the TV's side.

Like I've said, I've been able to connect before and the two devices are on the same network and fully-up to date.

If anyone has any info, please share it. Many thanks!

Windows 11 Keyboard acting unreliably only on Windows 10 and 11

I use a Redragon K618 Pro, a low end mechanical keyboard that works perfectly (feels snappy) on Linux and macOS, including through my KVM switch. On macOS, I even use Karabiner Elements to replicate Linux and Windows shortcuts.

On Windows 10 and 11, however, keystrokes randomly go missing, and Ctrl+C sometimes fails to copy anything. I've disabled telemetry, AI features, and other bloat through Settings, it stayed the same then I have went beyond then tried third party privacy scripts (these famous ones), but the issues persist.

The same keyboard worked flawlessly on my old Windows 8.1 installation. These problems started with later Windows 10 versions and became much more noticeable on Windows 11.

Am I missing a specific setting? Neither issue happens on Linux or macOS, using the exact same keyboard.

Any advice is welcomed.

Again, did a full cleanup (windows did) and reinstalled windows, after choosing the name of the account and etc. The name was set to "DefaultUser1" for no reason, ive tried to guess pretty basics passwords, such "admin" and possibly my old passwords just incase. But nothing appeared to fix it.

Very sorry for horrible explanation, but thats what i can do as of now.

Windows 11 Error: Microsoft .NET Host - 8.0.32 (x64)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone. My workplace gets this error on the same computer over and over again when connected to the internet and it’s very annoying because it’s in foreground and it disturbs workflow.

I don’t really know how to go about it. I tried deleting the 8.0.32 .NET file but it just gets regenerated, and the popup is automatic, meaning we are not doing anything to trigger it (it does not happen every time we do something specific, it happens all the time when the internet is on).

The machine runs Windows 11 Pro version 25H2. Processor is 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900K.

Solved [SOLVED] Microsoft Store "Try again later, something happened on our end" on every install (error 0x803FB017), caused by a leftover WinHTTP proxy

Processing img 0tyobv175rwh1...

**TL;DR:** If the Microsoft Store fails every install with "Try again later, something happened on our end" and nothing fixes it, run `netsh winhttp show proxy` in an admin Command Prompt. If it shows a proxy like `127.0.0.1:8888`, run `netsh winhttp reset proxy`. That fixed it for me after more than a year.

## The problem

Every app install from the Microsoft Store failed with:

> Try again later. Something happened on our end

This went on for over a year. I tried all of these with no luck:

- Changing the region

- Repairing and resetting the Store from Settings

- Running the Microsoft Store troubleshooter

- Running `wsreset.exe`

- Checking for pending Windows updates

## How I found the real cause

**1. Check Event Viewer for the real error code.**

Open Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → Store → Operational. I found:

`Exception thrown trying to install <ProductID>. 0x803FB017`

I couldn't find any documentation for that code. It turned out to be a generic wrapper around a more specific error.

**2. Read the log entries around it, not just the headline error.**

In PowerShell, right after reproducing the failure:

Get-WinEvent -LogName "Microsoft-Windows-Store/Operational" -MaxEvents 40 | Format-List TimeCreated,Id,LevelDisplayName,Message

The entries next to the error contained this:

Failed to connect to https://displaycatalog-caching.bigcatalog-frontdoor-prod.commerce.microsoft.com/... with proxy 127.0.0.1:8888

Error: 0x80072efd

The Store Install Service was trying to reach Microsoft's catalog through a proxy on my own PC (port 8888). Nothing was listening there, so every request failed locally. The Store then reported it as the generic 0x803FB017.

**3. Confirm the proxy.** In an admin Command Prompt:

netsh winhttp show proxy

Mine showed:

Proxy Server(s) : 127.0.0.1:8888

## Why nothing else worked

Windows has two separate proxy settings:

- The one in **Settings → Network & internet → Proxy** applies to browsers and most apps. Mine was clean.

- The **WinHTTP proxy** is system-wide and used by background services like the Store Install Service. It's not shown in the Settings app.

Resetting or repairing the Store only touches the app and its cache, so it never changed the proxy. `winget` also installed non-Store apps fine because it downloaded from GitHub, which made the network look healthy.

Port 8888 is the default for debugging proxies like Fiddler and Charles, and some VPN or privacy tools use it too. I suspect something like that left it behind, but I don't know what set it on my PC.

**System info**

- OS: Windows 11, build 10.0.26300.9711

- Device: HP 15s

- CPU: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1235U (1.30 GHz)

- RAM: 8.00 GB

- Microsoft account sign-in (Store signed in with it)

**Error codes**

- Store UI: "Try again later. Something happened on our end"

- Event Viewer: 0x803FB017 (Store/Operational log, BeginInstall)

- Underlying error: 0x80072efd (connection refused to 127.0.0.1:8888)

**Already tried before finding the fix**

Region change, Store repair and reset, Store troubleshooter, wsreset.exe, checking for Windows updates. None of these worked.

## The fix

In an **admin** Command Prompt:

netsh winhttp reset proxy

netsh winhttp show proxy

net stop InstallService

net start InstallService

The second command should now say "Direct access (no proxy server)". After that, the Store installed apps normally, and `winget install --id <ProductID> --source msstore` worked too.

## If it comes back

If `netsh winhttp show proxy` shows a proxy again after a restart, something is reapplying it. Check installed apps (Fiddler, Charles, mitmproxy, VPN or "privacy" tools), Startup apps in Task Manager, and Task Scheduler.

## Tip

When Windows gives a vague error, read the log entries around it. The specific failure is often a few lines away from the headline code.

Hope this helps someone. Happy to answer questions.

Windows 11 Folder I did not create on my PC (OS build 26200.9711)

I booted up my PC just now and it started updating. When it was finished and I logged into it, I saw a folder on my desktop called “NN”. I did not create this folder. Nobody else in my house uses my PC either. The folder doesn’t have anything inside of it and Windows Defender doesn’t deem it as a threat, but I’m a bit worried as to how it got there.

I tried searching up if anyone else had ran into this, but I didn’t find anything. Has anyone else seen this? Or does anyone know how it got there and what I should do now?

Windows 11 How to stop tab dimming when I have tabs open?

Every time I try to put two tabs on my screen at once, one of them darkens which is really annoying, and only one tab can be bright at a time.

This also happens when I take screenshots, so I am unable to show how it looks. Just imagine you have two tabs open and one of them is almost pitch black, and then when you press on the dark tab, it goes bright and the other one goes dark.

I'm pretty sure this is a setting but I don't know which one. This is the ASUS Zenbook and I can't find anything online?

I keep getting this message about this new version and that I should update and whatnot. One day I try to do just that and it won't let me, every time asks to free more memory space! Just how big is this thing?

Truth be told, I have my memory pretty full with, mostly, Adobe documents and a couple of games; but even after getting rid of a good chunk of them it still needs more. Is there something I am missing or should I just erase everything? I swear every time I update this thing I have less and less space...

Windows 11 Broken administrator commands. Access denied when running certain admin commands like chkdsk

Hi. I dual boot Arch and Win11 Pro on separate SSDs. Windows seems to love not shutting down my 2 1tb NTFS HDDs correctly and leaving them with busy flags meaning that I can't mount them on linux normally. I can remove the busy flag but thats a very temporary fix. A slightly less temporary fix is to run chkdsk within windows. Recently, on my local account with admin privileges on version 26200.9711 (it definitely says administrator in settings), i have lost access to chkdsk. when running the command within command prompt, either elevated or not elevated, and powershell, it says Access denied. In power shell, it says Access is denied, as well as +CategoryInfo : ResourceUnavailable: (:) [], ApplicationFailedException +FullyQualifiedErrorId: NativeCommandFailed.

I have absolutely no idea what to do. The best fix would be just to reformat these HDDs to BTRFS and no longer use them on windows, but I do have some things on them that I'd prefer to run/access on windows.

Autobot said it wants system info. Ryzen 5 3600, 24gb ddr4 3200MT/s, rx 5600 xt 6gb.
