The Thread Speculation Slop - LARKIN AND HUGHES TALK GOES HERE

To spare the sub from becoming 99% unsubstantiated rumors and hypothetical trades again, the Speculation Slop Megathread has been reinstated.

The facts, as we know them:

Quintin Jerome Hughes, traded to the Minnesota Wild on December 12th of 2025, has a contract that goes through the end of the 2026-2027 season, and will become a UFA if not extended. The Wild have been in talks with Hughes, and Hughes has not outright said he will not extend, but has also not signed his extension. With the new CBA rules, Quinn is eligible to sign a 7 year extension with the Wild or a 6 year extension with any other team. If he signs this year, his maximum cap hit could be $20.8 million, and if he signs in the summer, that number increases to $22.7 million. The team states that they have no indication that Hughes will not sign, and Hughes has not stated any intention to leave.

Dylan Larkin has requested a trade from the Detroit Redwings. He presented a limited trade list to the team, which was stated to include the Minnesota Wild. The former Red Wings GM, Steve Yzerman, refused to trade him, including turning down a direct offer from Bill Guerin. Yzerman has since been fired, and interim GM Shawn Horcroff has requested an additional list of teams from Larkin, which have been reportedly expanded to 10 teams, still including the Wild.

UPDATE TRACKER:

HAS QUINN SIGNED YET? NO.

HAS THERE BEEN A BIG TRADE? NO.

Such a consistent goalie, non stop big saves and already being a major part of our early success so far. If you disagree I think maybe you need a doctor.

[Smith] Wild’s special teams costly in 4-3 OT loss to Oilers: ‘It was self-inflicted wounds’

EDMONTON — A strength in the Minnesota Wild’s start has been their special teams, the power-play and penalty-kill units ranking among the top five in the league entering Tuesday’s game.

But the Edmonton Oilers beat the Wild at each aspect en route to a 4-3 victory at Rogers Place on Tuesday night.

The Oilers went 3-for-5 on the power play, including Evan Bouchard’s goal with one minute, 28 seconds left in overtime. Minnesota took a penalty for too many men on the ice in OT after possessing the puck for the first two minutes.

“I thought we were way better five-on-five,” goalie Jesper Wallstedt said. “It’s unfortunate that obviously penalties make a big difference in this game. They have a very sharp power play. You can’t feed a power play like this too many chances. …

“It felt like it was self-inflicted wounds today that made us lose the game. It wasn’t that they were a better team than us. It was more so ourselves shooting ourselves in the foot.”

The Wild rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit with goals by Kirill Kaprizov and Ryan Hartman to force OT. Edmonton had flipped the game earlier thanks to two power-play goals.

[Joe Smith]: How the Wild’s Nico Sturm got back on the ice after a puck to the head

Sturm said having gone through concussions before helped him know when he was ready to come back. There’s a psychological part of playing again too: Sturm knows he will still go to the front of the net and try to get in position as he always does. There’s always a risk involved with that too.

He’s watched the replay before, noting how the puck flipped up on Spurgeon’s stick blade as he released it, calling it “unfortunate bounces.” Sturm was just trying to get his stick open in a battle for position, and he tried to react at the last minute. There are guts and trust involved with being at the net front.

“There’s trust also with the opponents,” Sturm said. “Like, if I’m defending a guy in the front, I’m also trusting that, barring an incident like this where the puck flips up and there’s not much you can do, I’m trusting an NHL defenseman from the opposite team that’s shooting the puck from the point is not going to whistle it seven feet high. But the risk — 100 percent you can never take it out. But there are certain positions, where if a shot is coming right in front of you, where you might be turning your body a little more in a way where you can protect.

“But in that situation (with Spurgeon), he was so far out and the angle was not where I judged it to be a dangerous situation. I just tried to get my stick open for a tip. These things will probably continue to happen. You’re never going to be able to take it out. But hopefully I can avoid it in the future.”

Sturm is thankful for all of those who reached out, he had so many messages that he couldn’t answer all of them. That included people from Germany, his homeland. Sturm also chatted with Faber about the experience.

“I’m thankful that mine didn’t turn out as bad as his did,” Sturm said. “He’s obviously got a much longer road to get back than ours. So I’m thankful that the worst didn’t happen to me.”

Proposal for a Ryan Hartman hat trick

Similar to a Gordie Howe hat trick but requirements are:
At least 1 penalty drawn
At least 1 penalty take
At least 1 point (not good enough for it to just be a goal)

Local card show find!

Saw this at a card show a month ago at a table hosted by a nice couple. Initially passed on it since I had picked up a few other things that day. Kept thinking about it every now and then and came across the same couple this past weekend and couldn’t leave it this time!

I sadly never got to see Gabby play at the Xcel Energy Center when I lived in Minneapolis years ago, but I’m happy to pick up this as a nice sentimental piece and reminder of part of my childhood.

Gameday items

I am going to my first home wild game in almost a decade right before Thanksgiving. My questions are: do the Wild sell the warmup pucks with the date/matchup? If so how do I purchase one?
Are there any must sees at the stadium? Thanks in advance!

[Russo and Smith]: Battle of the Big 3s: Wild’s Kaprizov, Boldy, Hughes have the rare star power to match Oilers

Thumbnail
nytimes.com
136 Upvotes

No one is saying Kaprizov and Boldy are quite at the level of McDavid and Draisaitl, two of the most electrifying and prolific offensive players the NHL has ever seen. Together, they carried Edmonton to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals and established themselves as perhaps the most dangerous offensive tandem in hockey.

But Kaprizov and Boldy are also proven elite offensive talents, and they make a similar impact on the Wild: game-changers who drive the team with production and lead-by-example work ethic.

It makes for an electric matchup Tuesday at Rogers Place between the top teams in the Central and Pacific Divisions, with Kaprizov coming into the game leading the league in goals (10) and McDavid in points (23 during a season-opening eight-game point streak).

“Man, they’re elite,” Blue Jackets coach Rick Bowness said of Boldy and Kaprizov. “There’s some very good players in our league, and then there’s elite — and those guys are elite, man, there’s no question. There’s a lot of ice awareness with those guys. You’d better know where they are, and you’d better make sure you’re making them play in their zone.

“Much like what McDavid and Draisaitl do, they’ll put you on your heels. … They’re terrible to coach against, but from the ice level, they’re fun to watch.”

McDavid certainly isn’t overlooking Minnesota’s stars.

“They’re two very good players,” he said Monday. “That top line, obviously with (Joel) Eriksson Ek, is as good as it gets around the league. So we’ve got to take care of them, for sure.”
