News KP's contract allows immediate trade + more details about Jimmy's event [Slater, ESPN] stunning

From Slater's article just now live on ESPN. Four sort of stunning new tidbits:

  1. contract allows trade right away
  2. although was in San Diego seemed less engaged and didn't participate in scrimages, etc.
  3. told Warriors he was taking a 'leave of absence' night before Hawaii
  4. Hasn't followed through with staying around the team.

This sounds like an emotionally anguishing moment for KP because he's known as a great guy, well liked by all. Dunleavy's contract structure for KP can help us here. Want the best for Dubs #1, but feel sad for this great athlete brought down by COVID like so many people with POTS now.

Full quotes:

"Porzingis signed a two-year, $40 million extension with the team in June, but only $3 million of the $20 million in the second season is guaranteed, essentially making it an expiring contract. The front office strategically designed the extension without a raise between the two seasons, keeping him immediately trade-eligible instead of needing to wait until mid-December...""

Porzingis was in the team's San Francisco facility and on the court in the week leading up to training camp and attended Jimmy Butler's player-led event in San Diego in late September, though team sources described a detached Porzingis as indifferent and uninterested in participating in scrimmages and strenuous on-court prep work at the event..."

"On the Sunday before training camp, Porzingis called the Warriors and alerted general manager Mike Dunleavy that he was still dealing with the lingering impact of a health issue that has bothered him for nearly two years and told them he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence."

"[After promising to stay with the team..] that hasn't been the case. Porzingis hasn't returned to the facility, league sources said, beginning another indefinite leave of absence where he is mostly maintaining contact with only Dunleavy and Celebrini. The Warriors listed him as out for the season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night and the reasoning as "not with team" instead of an illness."

Wow. Poor guy. And what a challenge for everyone.

Stats Most points by a Warriors 1st round pick in their debut (since 1983): James Wiseman with 19 points. Can Yaxel break that record tonight?

For reference, here is the rest of the top 6

19 – James Wiseman

17 – Mitch Richmond

15 – Chris Mullin

15 – Latrell Sprewell

14 – Steph Curry

14 – Joe Smith

Pretty good chance Yaxel at least gets in the top 3 here. What yall think?

Discussion KP and medical retirement

If the warriors and KP agree to a medical retirement, he gets his guaranteed money, and the warriors get KPs contract off the books.

This is actually not great for us, since we're still over the cap and can't sign players outright. It may allow us to use the BAE or partial MLE to sign a player for up to 9 million and be under the first apron, but of course the issue is that there is no one to sign at this point and we then lose KPs salary as matching in trade.

So I expect we don't go this route, if we can't find a trade now we just hold KP and try again at the deadline.

The preferred route would be a trade to a team that then wants to agree to the medical retirement to shed salary. We could attach picks for an asset, take on a longer but bad contract, or most likely accept low value expiring in return to maintain flexibility. Maybe the clippers for max strus or DJJ (would need to attach something for DJ). Maybe Milwaukee for Kuzma or Levert. Charlotte for grant williams, kings for Deandre hunter, or someone of that caliber.

Discussion Aday Mara debut

I, maybe like many others hoped the Warriors had drafted Aday Mara with their pick due to his size and the fact that we constantly lack a down low physical presence for centers. I am curious to know from other fans, does his debut along with the alarming news of KP's looming illnesses spark any concern that we drafted the wrong player? I am really hoping for Yax to dispel my fear but I can't help but feel that maybe we let the right player slip through our fingers

Discussion Is it finally time to admit that Magic Mike is actually floundering? We are going into opening night with Dray/Horford/Ike as our bigs

I can excuse being stingy with trading picks. But when your roster is carrying 2 injured players (Moody Jimmy) + tons of old vets, why would you sign only injured FAs?

Melton Bassey KP Niang Steph Dray Horford Leons Cryer are all heavy injury risks. Plus 2 players out till Feb.

That's 11 of our roster who are injury prone.

If this is a reload year, why aren't we taking flyers on young talent instead of Niang?

Just sheer incompetence.
