When it was Daily Show followed by Colbert Report I always actually liked Colbert better, but his interviews were terrible while Johns were always absolutely top notch
I think its hard to give a fair comparison since Colbert was always in character, including in the interviews. Especially with subject matters that would be best without the character. But the other portion of the show got to benefit from the character so it evened out in my mind. I do admit to skipping a bunch of the interviews tho.
That's actually exactly what it was. He did the interviews in character, with them designed to be basically an additional comedy segment, as opposed to JS having an actual quality interview with someone.
EOD though that's just a reason, it doesn't change that it was what it was.
