Overturn citizens United via amendment.

67

u/MrE_Gamer 1d ago

Would never pass the 2/3 house majority. It would honestly be easier to nuclear option-simple majority away the filibuster -> pass a court expansion to 13 -> stack court -> overturn the ruling by introducing a new case

34

u/Antoak 21h ago

its even worse than that

it has to get ratified by 3/4ths of the states.

ten empty red states with the combined population of ~16m can shut down an amendment.

7

u/awawe 15h ago

1/4th of 50 is not ten

3

u/Abracadaver14 10h ago

There's also at least two high pop red states that are also against. That does get that 1/4th.

4

u/awawe 10h ago

That still doesn't get you to 1/4th. 12/50=0.24. You need 13 states to block ratification of an amendment. Obviously there are more than 13 red states so the distinction is immaterial, but it's just funny to me how hard the math seems to be.

28

u/Imbiss 23h ago

Cool, let's do that then

7

u/Ketzeph 13h ago

Okay you need a Dem president and Dem senate to do that. Go vote and get your friends, family, and neighbors to vote blue

2

u/melodyze 15h ago

Stacking the court will be the end of the court. It will just expand every 4 years, causing an insane amount of chaos as what the most fundamental laws mean changes every election.

It will also end up being insanely corrupt, just handing the power to completely restructure the judicial branch over to the other branches. The branches are separate for a reason.

10

u/Riddiku1us 14h ago

The courts are already stacked...

3

u/JollyGreenLittleGuy 13h ago

The GOP want a government that is incapable to enacting change except through secondary quasi-legal policing (see ICE). What legislation do you possibly think the GOP will pass that they haven't already? It's always tax cuts for billionaires and cutting of government services, and they can do those without removing the filibuster. They can fund ICE with the filibuster.

4

u/melodyze 13h ago edited 12h ago

The point of stacking the court is that it makes legislation irrelevant. You can just say legislation you don't like is illegal. Or say that the law already requires something you want as it is.

You aren't understanding how profound destroying the court is. It has nothing to do with what legislation people want or not, what legislation is good or bad. It makes that entire question irrelevant.

The entire democratic system exists on the assumption of a functional, independent judiciary, so that the enforcement of the rules of how the system works are separated from people operating within those rules.

It's like if you were playing monopoly with a stranger for a life changing amount of real money, and you decided that every turn you'll take turns being completely in charge of what the rules of monopoly are with absolutely no checks on that power. The game will just dissolve into complete chaos. Talking about what you think the rules should be then is irrelevant, because there won't be any in any real sense.

3

u/MrVegosh 8h ago

The Supreme Court is not an independent judiciary. Its an extension of the GOP

u/JollyGreenLittleGuy 13h ago edited 12h ago

You aren't providing an alternative, and you aren't actually addressing my arguments.

Edit: also for posterity the above commenter is editing their comment after posting adding paragraphs to the original comment without clearly marking what is being added.

Edit 2: and they added even more to the comment above after I called out the blatant editing. Absolutely egregious behavior.

1

u/melodyze 12h ago

I didn't expect you to read it within a minute of being posted. The alternative is obvious. Win elections. Have a functioning party that actually tries to accomplish concrete goals. Be realistic that we messed up and the court will take a long time to reclaim.

Use what levers you can on the court in the mean time (amendments, then appeal to legacy, shame and embarassment, mostly).

Dissolving the foundational controls of the system and then handing it back to them is obviously not the answer.

And if you say, just never hand it back to the people that oppose us, unless it is by winning elections (as I said above) that is by definition the end of democracy. I don't think ending democracy is a good idea. If you do, at least actually own that position. And winning elections is great, but you will lose sometimes. That has to be not the end of the world, and the controls are what makes that possible.

1

u/JollyGreenLittleGuy 12h ago

What is the current administration not getting done that they want to get done? They are achieving every one of their goals by using an extrajudicial system.

The filibuster is not a foundational control of our government, it's not within the (edit: Constitution). It's a gentleman's agreement and the only function it currently serves is the status quo. The status quo doesn't serve us, it serves the billionaire class.

This isn't going to be fixed by the status quo because our entire federal electoral system is built to cater to states with lower populations, so land gets more votes than actual people. This truth applies through the Senate, through the low caps on the House, and applies to the presidency which is why we have had so many presidents only winning the electoral college and not the popular vote. Since these flaws exist in the Senate and Presidency they naturally also apply to the Supreme Court since these positions are nominated by the President and approved by the Senate.

Also posterity please note that even after being called out they are still hiding their edits. They actually added another paragraph to the original comment after I added my edit.

1

u/melodyze 12h ago

I did not ever edit a comment after seeing you reply. I was done the first comment before the second minute after posting it.

It is very weird that you open a stranger's messages almost certainly faster than your own family opens yours.

1

u/Count_Backwards 8h ago

This argument only makes sense if expanding the court has no effect. If expanding the court takes power away from the fascists and allows the left to actually reform democracy as is needed, then there won't be any more fascists-every-four-years. If Democrats can't stay in power for more than four years, it will be because they aren't accomplishing enough, and having a hostile fascist SC is one of the reasons they aren't accomplishing enough.

9

u/Mike_Lagas_Foul_Ball 21h ago

It's not going to happen. The last time an amendment was passed was in 1992. You really think the next amendment we pass is going to repeal an existing supreme court decision?

5

u/melodyze 15h ago

People should pressure this to be asked as often as possible in every senate debate. It's completely uncontroversial among voters, like 80% support across parties. And it's the actual root of the problem.

Let's follow the logic. Corporations are people and have constitutional rights. Do they have the right to vote. Bear arms? Right to counsel? On the same logic, if a corporation is a person, and commits a crime, we should be able to jail the corporation, right?

Come on.

What about if there is a time place and manner restriction... Like say they can do all of that... Just not 30 days before an election?

17

u/JaggedGorgeousWinter 22h ago

Well you seem to enjoy moving the goalposts around. Why won’t you pick a stance and take it?

2

u/ockaners 9h ago

I think the poster realized that the compromise they wanted was what was existing before citizens overturned it. At least I hope that's what they realized.

5

u/ockaners 22h ago

Corporations aren't people. They can't speak. They're made up of people. Those people can speak.

2

u/ty_xy 16h ago

Nah, just cap the amount of money corporations can donate including through shell corporations and PACs, the problem of the existing "businesses" have a voice is that their voice is SOOOO much louder because of the money. Of course the politicians are gonna accept their bribes and PAC donations and all these work arounds. Unlimited money in politics means you can buy politicians.

In serious countries where government works for the people, there are very strict rules on lobbying, political donations, how much corporations can get involved in government.

The reason this guy gets so much hate by the far-right is that he’s a walking
rebuttal of every talking point and every argument against Muslim immigrants.

He’s fully assimilated. His Muslim values are wholly compatible with Western democracy. He’s completely for secularism and against religious supremacy. Articulate, educated, successful, intelligent, respectful, levelheaded… etc.

Between him and Mamdani, the irony of brown immigrants are the ones actually making America great must be torturous to bigots, and man am I glad to see it happen.

196

u/SchpartyOn 16h ago

He’s not an immigrant! He was born and raised in the United States. This fact alone bothers the shit out of the right. Don’t play into their bullshit with that “he’s a good immigrant” talk. He’s a good American.

48

u/FreakindaStreet 15h ago

While you and me both know that, his detractors do not make that distinction. He’s Muslim, he’s “uppity”, and worst of all, he isn’t white.

10

u/Spongeman735 7h ago

That’s why it’s important that we make the distinction and emphasize this point.

101

u/finfansd 20h ago

He's not an immigrant, he was born in Michigan.

225

u/SearingPhoenix 22h ago

Seeing him in the debate with Rogers was pretty spectacular.

(Paraphrasing)
Moderator: "How would you pay for your platform?"
Al-Sayed: Tax the billionaires. Here's what that would let us do.
Rogers: Notice that there wasn't any policy in his response.
Al-Sayed: Tax. The Billionaires. That's... that's the policy.

12

u/johnis12 10h ago

Thinking about that whole "question" with that Tommy fella asking him if he would disavow the Muslim Brotherhood" and when Abdul pressed him about why he would ask him to do that...

Tommy: "Well, they're a terrorist group."

Abdul: "... Okay?"

Love his response, basically just a "What the fuck that got to do with me?"

2

u/EViLTeW 5h ago

And "Tommy" (Thomas Teepell) is a trumplican operative who worked for Josh Hawley and Philip Sarnecki. Ooops.

58

u/rk1468 21h ago

I think his confident jock vibe is also a bit unsettling to them.

8

u/chickpeaze 17h ago

They aspire to be the successful confident accomplished jacked hot guy, but he actually is and it breaks their brains.

1

u/Chrisj1616 16h ago

At least Jesse Watters admits this in his own way

11

u/billytheskidd 19h ago

Yeah. I have to say I like what he stands for and have been generally impressed by him, but he definitely gives me kinda frat boy vibes.

However, I don’t support politicians or anyone, I support values and policies. So if his and mine align more than not, he’s got my support

27

u/no_reddit_for_you 14h ago

He does not give frat boy vibes at all.

He gives confident and tired of bullshit vibes. He does not act like a frat boy at all lol

-19

u/TheSwordItself 16h ago

Well you live in a representative democracy so your support of policies doesn't mean shit, only your representatives do, so support a politician.

1

u/ethanlan 2h ago edited 1h ago

That last paragraph hits home so well for me. I grew up and live in a huge diverse city (mostly besides college and a few years in london) and it seems that the average brown person is far more compatible with the american values that truly make us great versus white people who are way more slippery sometimes

1

u/FreakindaStreet 1h ago

It’s because we know living without freedom actually looks and feels like. The educated among us truly know how great American Ideals really are, and what they truly represent. And we don’t take it for granted.

Those flag-waving conservatives are usually cosplaying. They are upholding their interests, not the ideal.

12

u/insane677 21h ago

He's also fucking hot.

2

u/Howtobefreaky 19h ago

“So much hate”

It’s all bots and misinformation.

Much of it, not all, but much of its manufactured.

Because what happens if someone like El-Sayed gets elected?

Taxes on the rich go up,  services for everyone else also go up and  increase.

And the powers that be don’t want to see that, they don’t want us to get even a little taste of the good life, that we deserve for our tax dollars.

They can use their machine to turn people against this amazing person, simply because of his name and that’s the strategy.

Well, you’re not wrong. I just think it’s important to identify the machine that exists to sway easily influenced voters against their own best interest.

It’s not just that people “hate him” it’s that media and social media are owned by the 1% and used against the rest of us.

Unfortunately it’s a little too easy to stoke hatred and to get people to vote around his name and against what’s actually in their best interests.

This guy could and I hope will do amazing things and they’re gonna do everything they can to stop it and to sully his name along the way.

1

u/2Rhino3 11h ago

I think people read your comment wrong and thought you were saying that the cost of services for everyone goes up which is why you’re currently sitting at 0 upvotes. You’re saying what most people on this subreddit agree with.

2

u/Indaflow 7h ago

Thanks, it’s all good.

3

u/standingboot9 16h ago

He seems to be able to phrase his responses in a way that even MAGA worshippers are able to understand. Seriously impressive person and candidate

u/getroundintheseason 8h ago

Liberal colonizer talking about "assimilation" and "compatibility".

1

u/DontForgorTheMilk 6h ago

He makes me wish I still lived in Michigan so I could vote for him 🥲

(I have other reasons to want to live in Michigan again too though, don't get me wrong. Such a beautiful state)

1

u/Maleficent-Bug7998 14h ago

There are so many competent and compassionate and seemingly incorruptible progressive candidates running it's hard not to hope for real systemic change.

0

u/AssCrackBandit20 13h ago

Exactly. I don’t really give af about potentially problematic religious views as long as you don’t place your religion over your politics, which AES has shown no indication of, and as long as you vote for progressive causes in DC.

58

u/CondescendingShitbag 1d ago

Salient criticism of media's role in these discussions. People often have a rightfully suspect opinion of the government, but so much of that mistrust often stems directly from media portrayal of the subject.

1

u/Abracadaver14 10h ago

And media portrayal is nowadays largely influenced by clicks. You'll (generally) get a version of the truth, but it's the version that'll generate the most clicks.

-34

u/Stickyouwithaneedle 1d ago

I must be tired...

19

u/LostBob 23h ago

Again? We found the voter fraud right here. He admits it. /s

1

u/Flouid 12h ago

Go vote today, MI has early in person voting. We can be damn sure that everything possible will be done to suppress the vote on election day and you can sidestep that by voting early. You can also sidestep the mail interference by voting in person

14

u/Changsta 21h ago

Media doesn't ask questions to help everyone improve our lives. Media asks questions to further divide everyone.

25

u/ry1701 1d ago

Love this dude. So well spoken, educated, logical and he's exactly the kind of person we need in the Senate.

1

u/ethanlan 2h ago

I just broke up with my girlfriend and its her condo (I have a minority stake in it tho thats she's gonna pay hopefully soon) so Im up in michigan (my parents moved there a couple of years ago) and im so happy to finally have my vote actually mean something (versus everyone i like in chicago winning without question).

I fucking love this dude

5

u/NorthernDevil 11h ago

Something I don’t often hear discussed in these conversations about the media is how this is the same late-stage capitalism enshittification phenomenon impacting every industry in the United States. We’ve commercialized media to prioritize short-term profit over public service, because that’s what we do to everything. Local news has collapsed and now the only profit left is ad revenue from clickbait articles. Or relatedly, revenue from national anger factories like Fox “News” which has conceded to a court that it’s not really news.

A lot of this talk focuses on “the media” as this amorphous entity that’s choosing its focus and has lost its ethics, but it misses the point that what journalists are instructed to focus on is a consequence of investor/ownership demands, itself a product of commoditizing the news.

I don’t know what the solution is, but journalism is our one source of political accountability. It’s way too important to let this happen. And I’d like to see a hyper-articulate DSA guy like El-Sayed talk about the reasons a little more.

2

u/Twentysix2 10h ago

23 years ago someone published a book which said a key issue with the media being that they were driven more by ratings than accuracy. That book was Lying Liars by comedian Al Franken who was elected senator for MN 5 years later

2

u/jarvisesdios 22h ago edited 17h ago

Is this the new episode coming out soon? I don't recall him interviewing him before, on the podcast.

Edit: yes, yes it is

5

u/parabostonian 1d ago

People who can cut through BS this well are pretty special these days.

-13

u/Danominator 23h ago

DSA candidates do it all the time

0

u/PM_ME_CATS_OR_BOOBS 13h ago

The really good ones do. The rest get bogged down in trying to refute every point the opposition brings up. There is a reason why the Gish Gallop works.

3

u/LemonScentedDespair 15h ago

The crazy thing is, he's just pretty good at public speaking. He has some good fast quips, but mostly he's just able to break down his responses to be understandable and relatable. Which is kind of rare for politicians in general, I guess.

But, when put in context next to the fucking mouth vomit coming from the opposition, he looks like a golden god of speaking.

Trump rambled about his first name (Abdulrahman) for like 5 minutes, couldn't fucking pronounce it, and settled on "well his middle name is Mohammed, so I am very smart for calling him that!"

I wish we had literacy tests for political office.

1

u/youhavenosoul 13h ago

>>literacy tests for political office.

Crazy what was taken for granted before Trump became president. “Gee, he’s not technically breaking the law, but there’s a lot of
Unspoken standards being violated- like the expectation of literacy. We’ve never elected an *actual* dumbass oaf charlatan before!”

-2

u/Bownaldo 15h ago

Working with Hasan Poker was a mistake though

5

u/nankerjphelge 13h ago

This is silly. There's no way to know in advance every single thing that will ever come out of someone's mouth that you may associate with. The only way to guarantee that is to not associate with anyone ever. And Abdul stopped associating with Piker after he made certain comments.

This is the impossible double standard that Democrats are held to, while Republicans can associate with whoever the fuck they want no matter how heinous and don't have to stop, and no one cares.

-1

u/Bownaldo 13h ago

It was pretty well known what Poker had already said. The whole 'USA deserves 9/11' thing, for example

-4

u/nankerjphelge 13h ago

Again, still silly when the expectation is that Abdul was supposed to comb through tens of thousands of hours of commentary just to have a person as a supporter at rallies. And he stopped having that person around after being made aware of some of their inappropriate comments.

Meanwhile, Trump can spew blatant racism and bigotry every day, call for the persecution and eradication of certain groups of people and associate with white supremacists and neo Nazis unapologetically, and no one gives a shit. The double standard and hypocrisy is off the charts.

-3

u/Bownaldo 13h ago

The thing is that a quick look at his wiki page would give you a pretty good summary already. No need to go over the tens of thousands of hours of content.

4

u/valentc 13h ago

Then why bring up a comment from 2016 that he apologized for almost immediately after he said it?

It also deflect a from his main point which is HASAN IS A STREAMER NOT PRESIDENT. I capitalized it because you all seem to have this idea that Hasan Piker has the same if not more responsibility that the motherfucking president.

3

u/nankerjphelge 13h ago edited 13h ago

Still missing the point spectacularly. One guy that you had at some campaign rallies and then stopped when you found out some of the things he said is not the crisis you seem to think it is. Especially not when the current president openly and unapologetically associates with white supremacists and spews bigotry and hate every day, and people are like "yeah that's fine".

Would you rather Abdul had not course corrected and stopped associating with Piker and just doubled and tripled down like Trump does? Or is it actually a good thing that he was actually willing to course correct? Any reasonable person would say the latter. But you'll probably respond again having demanded retroactive perfection, because again that is the idiotic double standard Democrats are held to while Republicans can do whatever the fuck they want.

-1

u/08rian22 12h ago

No one is mad Abdul backed off, the problem is it took so long and a simple google search woulda told you not to 💀 its like if Abdul starts campaigning with Kanye and is shocked when he says something antisemitic like cmon everyone knew his history

0

u/nankerjphelge 8h ago

Comparing a global superstar's profile to that of a twitch streamer is laughable. And again, the important thing is he distanced himself from those statements once it was brought to his attention.

If you're looking for perfection then stay home and never vote for anyone, because that candidate doesn't exist. And again, the double standard of crucifying Abdul for not having vetted someone who showed up at some campaign rallies while not a peep about Republicans who proudly associate with white supremacists and Christian talibanists and espouse their rhetoric shamelessly and without apology is absurd.

-1

u/08rian22 8h ago

We're not asking for perfection. Do you really think its hard to find Hasan's controversial statements. Just google it lol

Why do you keep deflecting with republicans you can call out both lol

0

u/nankerjphelge 7h ago

And yet interestingly, we have yet to see you call out the Republicans in this discussion, only try to crucify Abdul for something that he's already course corrected on. Curious. In fact, one might even think you are a right-wing troll sealioning here in bad faith. 🤔

So let's hear it. Are you actually a Democrat? Or were you someone who was never going to vote for a Democrat or Abdul in the first place?

→ More replies

-1

u/Bownaldo 7h ago

Now you're just being dishonest. I'd argue that Piker's political notoriety was greater than that of a global superstar. I mean, members of the White House, including our Vice President, called Piker out last year for the whole shock collar thing. That's when people started digging into Piker's statements in the past. And it does not matter that he distanced himself from certain statements later on. The damage is already done.

1

u/nankerjphelge 7h ago

Lmao if you think Hasan Piker is more famous than Kanye West then you're delusional and living in a terminally online bubble.

And you're full of shit saying the damage is already done, while you have absolutely nothing to say about Donald Trump or any of the Republicans who proudly and openly support white supremacists and associate with them, yet still win their elections just fine. Quit your bullshit.

-6

u/Dangerpaladin 12h ago edited 12h ago

The US did deserve 9/11, I don't even think this is an extremist view. We basically architected it ourselves. It is obviously a horrible tragedy and I don't and didn't wish it on America but you would have to bury your head in the sand think that we took no part in the lead up to it.

Yeah terrorist's attacking civilian targets for things the government and military did is wrong, we would like to think everyone that we have conflicts with are not going to take extremist measures like that. But terrorist attacks aren't something that happen in a vacuum. If we keep pretending like we didn't play a role in 9/11 ourselves it will happen again, and again and again until we learn our lesson.

The government should take more responsibility for their geopolitical decisions that result in a group of people hating us so much they attack our defenseless civilians. Maybe "deserve" is the wrong word, but it was definitely a very predictable consequence of our foreign policy, and I think if you can easily connect the dots like that even after the fact you do bare some blame as a country.

It is an uncomfortable thought, but this is why it is important that we pay attention to what our government is doing, and ask for transparency and insist on consequences for bad actors. These are all things we still aren't doing 25 years later and I wonder every day when the next wake up call is going to happen.

3

u/immutable_truth 11h ago

Lmao this entire novel to circle back and say “maybe deserve is the wrong word”. So basically contradicting your initial point.

Yes. It is the wrong word. Nobody deserves for thousands of their civilians to die. That would be called justifying terrorism.

-5

u/phyrros 11h ago

Yes. It is the wrong word. Nobody deserves for thousands of their civilians to die. That would be called justifying terrorism.

Yes, absolutely. But if you take that very true and serious question and judge US society & foreign policy by that same measure you get a very unwelcoming answer..

1

u/Lord_Decitron 6h ago

I don't much like Piker a whole lot, but more often than not I find the people vocally critical of Piker are almost universally awful people who've said or believe in far worse things than Piker, or are part of a cultish following of some other dipshit political streamer with far shittier beliefs and the like than Piker.

0

No one voting in his election cares about this.

0

u/HiHoJufro 2h ago

No one voting for him in this election cares, or at least not enough to vote for his Republican opponent (which is, to say the least, incredibly reasonable). But that doesn't mean people shouldn't care, or even that they don't.

I remember when he interviewed Platner and it was all gravy. I try not to get too excited anymore.

1

As someone from Ohio, I will admit the only good things about Michigan are its rustic, beautiful nature and El-Sayed.

We have absolute morons running things down here, our politicians are absolute garbage humans (see JD Vance, et al). Jealous of how great a public servant he could be.

Clearly you haven't listened to him beyond just this clip. What he's talking about specifically is subsidizing Israel with military equipment and funding so they can continue to commit genocide. He's never said we should eliminate US military funding for our own defense.

This is what happens when you comment on things you haven't taken the time to actually understand or listen to.

He has said so, exhaustively. Again, it's not his fault that you only choose to watch a one minute snippet and then decide the totality of his position from that, when he's outlined it comprehensively in just about every interview and speech in which the full context is present.

But sure, sure, keep peddling this bullshit that his messaging sucks because you can't be bothered to check out anything besides a one minute clip that only tangentially touches on foreign policy in passing, and don't want to inform yourself any further before spewing the above bullshit on the internet.

Great clip and Im sure the whole interview is great.
But you can already see the incoming calls for Jon to also be released from Apple or any other connected company for sharing "biased" media, even though a podcast is outside of MSM. But we will see what we get of this interview when its released.
