Discussion / Question Never Trusting Announcement Trailers Ever Again.

After Metroid Prime 4's delay, Mass Effect 4's cancellation, Beyond Good & Evil 2 never coming out, and the Next Elder Scrolls being probably at least 5 years away does anyone else just have no interest in seeing game sequel announcements ever again without a release date or gameplay attached?

At this point you might as well not even bother with gameplay videos or release videos or anything and literally wait until the game is purchasable and then go look up those videos.

Yeah like the Perfect Dark had gameplay revealed but was still early in development and cancelled

I was excited when they showed that new trailer for perfect dark 😟

I get being disappointed, but don’t let some cancellations kill your excitement for new games.

StarCraft ghost still hurts, didn’t stop from being excited for silk song those many years.

I stopped trusting them 15 years ago

At least the KOTOR remake, FOTOR, and Star Wars eclipse are definitely coming out

The games you listed all I feel like are/were known to be announced WELL before things were moving.

Figured people would have learned this at least after Watch Dogs.

Or Dead Island 1. Every few years enough new people tune into gaming news and learn the lesson somehow lol.

Nah, it was 4. Andromeda was a spinoff. This game was going back to the original crew. RIP.

No, it was going to be a sequel both to the trilogy and to Andromeda. Plus it was the fifth game. It was never going to have a numbered name, but it was I formally going to be ME5.

This is categorically false, it was ME 4. Everyone knew this

In no way was it ME4.

Hasn't this been the case for well over a decade

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was announced 18 years ago

Okami is my favorite childhood game, and I just feel nothing at the sequel's reveal trailer. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't exist until they show gameplay.

All the greed and deception, and these idiot corpos wonder why piracy is more popular than ever

What do you mean the Elder Scrolls being just 5 years away? That trailer did not give a release date and Bethesda very clearly said that Starfield was years out, and that the next Elders Scrolls would be years after that.

He said at least 5.

I am looking forward to a period of new IPs and non-triple A games taking over

You youngins are lucky to not lived through the bullshit E3 announcements era. It was a lot different when they actually came out on stage with material and details and it never happens.

A tweet and a png, I half expect cancellation anyway.

Agent still stings to this day.

I’ve always just taken “announcement” trailers as “hey this exists” getting hyped for that is just setting yourself up to be disappointed.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development, it will come out, right after the rapture.

I’m interested in things that are announced. The announcement is a story to itself. The actual game is a whole different thing.

We all knew in our gut that Mass Effect 4 wasn’t real though. That was the most obviously gonna be canceled game ever.

ES6 has been 5 years away for 15 years. They have completely mishandled the development process of that game.

It’s gotten somewhat better with some games shadow dropping (Oblivion remaster) or coming out the same year it’s announced.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is dead right? like officially dead?

No, just still in pre-production

1

u/Mr_smith1466 1h ago

As of a report yesterday, it's in preproduction right now. (Yes, it really is that farcical)

1

u/Exzalia 1h ago

There is no fucking way, PREPRUCTION!? hasn't it been like 10 years?

1

u/Mr_smith1466 1h ago

Like 18. And yes, this really is absolutely insane. But it's apparently still alive.

1

u/Exzalia 1h ago

WTF is happening with that game? did they restart it like five times?

1

u/Mr_smith1466 1h ago

It's undoubtedly been restarted several times over. As for why ubisoft keeps restarting it instead of just cutting their losses, that's not clear, though many have speculated answers. What seems apparent is that ubisoft either won't or can't end development. And it's a sizable team working on the game too.

Honestly I’ve been feeling like that for years. What’s the point of getting hyped for a CG trailer and no release date. If I don’t see full gameplay previews I’m just not interested. Part of why I’m not interested in GTA VI (aside from never really loving any Rockstar games) is it looks very scripted. Will be a good game, but enjoyable in the way an entertaining action movie is.

2

u/marckh 1h ago

What part of the GTA 6 gameplay looked scripted to you? It all just looks like how the game plays out as you interact with it to me.

1

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 1h ago

Yea that part baffled me which is why I didn't even bother addressing it in my reply. Rockstar is like one of the few devs that will only show something when there's something worth showing lol

1

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 1h ago

Even when you get actual gameplay in the trailer, like with Hellblade 3, it can still happen. Anyone remember Scalebound? That one still stings. There are very few times I will get hyped for a CGI trailer and the only one in recent memory is Divinity because we all know Larian will deliver.

... GTA is an open world game and the granddaddy of modern sandbox games, the series is as far from an "interactive movie" as you can get.

Don’t forget Ninja Theory’s Senua announcement earlier this year!

1

u/dunn000 1h ago

This wasnt even cancelled, pretty sure the game is still set to come out next year.

1

u/bbjakie 1h ago

Ninja Theory is literally being shut down.

1

u/dunn000 1h ago

nothing is confirmed

0

u/bbjakie 1h ago

You can hold out hope but it looks bleak as hell. Knowing the industry rn I don’t expect Senua to see the light of day.

But sure, nothing’s “confirmed”. The writing on the wall is pretty fucking clear though.

1

u/dunn000 26m ago

I know NT was laid off but Xbox still owns the game and IP and it’s still on their Release calendar. Until something gets announced as cancelled, this far in development, I’ll reserve judgement

Dude I just play old games now, it’s so much better. Even when games launch, you’ve got a year before they’re fully updated and dlc is out anyway.
