Discussion / Question Sad for the devs, but Veilguard definitely helped dig the grave

Post image

BioWare is closing its doors. After more than 30 years of Mass Effect, Dragon Age, KOTOR… it’s over.

Really sad for all the developers who put their time and passion into these games. I genuinely hope every single one of them can bounce back somewhere else and keep making cool stuff. This sucks for them.

That said, let’s not pretend. Veilguard was a massive piece of shit. They tried to please a "modern" audience that doesn’t represent their actual community or the average player. Result? The game got hit with a huge backlash, sales tanked, and EA pulled the plug.

I just hope the devs and also the top management at EA actually learn from this mistake. Because doubling down on that direction was the fastest way to kill a legendary studio.

RIP BioWare.

Anthem was the grave digging. Veilguard was tunneling down till they hit the Earth's core and burned out.

u/RetnikLevaw 3h ago

I'd argue Andromeda was the beginning of the end.

u/ApollyonFE 3h ago

Giving their golden son, flagship franchise over to a group of unproven nobodies with little experience sure was a choice. Bioware gave their teenage son a Ferrari as their first car.

It has been dead for a decade and people have been playing with its corpse, for some reason they needed a doctor to tell them it was dead before realizing ? lol

u/CuteAssTigerENVtuber 3h ago

Y'know it might also have something to do with not releasing any good games over the last decade. Might be a bit of a money drain

9

u/B-Dragons_2560 3h ago

Yeah i mean duh, what he's saying is that veilguard gave the last hit, and it was a big hit to the coffin

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

Probably should focus on making good games rather than imprinting your ideology in them, all in an effort to OWN THE CHUDS.

-6

u/egamruf 3h ago

Fuck. You people are exhausting. Is it so hard to understand that some people think a game being inclusive DOES make it better?

5

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

Is it so hard for YOU to understand that the vast majority don't? And that you're a tiny little minority that doesn't buy video games?

And that focusing on OWNING THE CHUDS makes it so you shoehorn in ideology in a way that makes no fucking sense in the universe, like this monstrosity portrayed on the picture for for you to see? Or all of the dialogue?

The people who made this game have zero talent. They belong nowhere near video games.

Good. Riddance.

u/ReMeDyIII 3h ago

Right, like Veilguard.

6

u/Arandui 3h ago

Everything released up from 2011 digged their grave. Veiguard was the final nail.

17

u/ReGorilla- 4h ago

Bioware, sadly, hadn't made anything that solid or wasn't married in some kind of controversy since Inquisition; which was it's own can of worms at the time. It's incredible how they lasted even this long post-ME3

7

u/serpentear 3h ago

They’ve also been one of these most meddled with teams in all of video games.

12

u/Bromjunaar_20 3h ago

Downvotes be damned, Veilguard actually was their end

-1

u/ReMeDyIII 3h ago

Reddit bot manipulation is getting out of hand.

3

u/GuillotineTeam 3h ago

Andromeda and anthem also started the trend of what to expect from BioWare

10

u/serpentear 3h ago

Veilguard is what happens when the head of your video game company doesn’t know jack shit about video games. Fuck EA forever and always.

12

u/plebbut 4h ago

Ahhhhhhh

What the FUCK is that?

8

u/Snowtwo 3h ago

A Taash. They're more than glad to let you know they're non-binary.

7

u/spider-jedi 4h ago

The grave was already been dug after Andromeda. EA has closed studios over less. Bioware has had a hit game since 2014.

Veilguard is just an easy target of you don't look at the full picture

3

u/GoliathGladiator 3h ago

Anthem dug the hole, Andromeda put them in a coffin and veil guard nailed it shut.

3

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 3h ago

More like veilguard didn’t dig them out of the grave. They were deep in it after andromeda and steiaght up burried after the massive flop of anthem. There was no more hole to dig, just a chance to climb out.

11

u/ema778308 4h ago

For me, Anthem was more catastrophic.

3

u/CuteAssTigerENVtuber 3h ago

We need a version of the " both are good" meme but with " both a bad"

2

u/Alarming-Basil2894 3h ago

I think it started with Dragon age 2. That game failed to meet expectations and biowares fucks up only piled on with ME3s controversial ending, inquistion being successful at launch but fading into obscurity for some reason and then the holy shitrinity of andromeda, anthem and veilguard sealing the deal for good. The bioware people keep missing has long been gone. This studio that was shut down was not the same studio you remembered from the 2000s.

2

u/RetnikLevaw 1h ago

Could you imagine how much Baldur's Gate 3 would have sucked if Bioware made it instead of Larian?

2

u/Fullchester_United 3h ago

BioWare is just a brand at this stage. Anyone surprised that a game dev releasing average to terrible games for a decade has closed?

Hopefully the IP goes to competent companies that produce some good games.

2

u/Lurker_Zee 3h ago

Sad that the devs are not serving prison time for scamming.

1

u/RetnikLevaw 1h ago

Now that's a hot take...

1

u/Lurker_Zee 1h ago

But frak damn, am I fighting to normalize that kind of thinking.

2

u/nunya_bidnes77 3h ago

Bioware died because they haven't made a good game in 12 years. The last good new game they made was Dragon Age Inquisition in 2014. They only had 3 new games since 2014. Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017 was panned by critics and fans, and any expansions were cancelled. Anthem was released in 2019 and was so bad that the game was shutdown completely. And Veilguard in 2024 was so bad and sold so poorly that it was the final nail in the coffin for the studio.

2

u/PigBocket 3h ago

Fuck veilguard

2

u/longbrodmann 3h ago

Not just this one, Anthem, ME4 too.

2

u/Megaman_320 2h ago

Why are you all downvoting OP? Veilguard was the nail in the coffin

3

u/acelexmafia 3h ago

Its like the devs of the game didn't even try to appeal to their own fans

3

u/--clapped-- 4h ago edited 4h ago

Not really.

EA was just acquired for $55 BILLION. Did the Saudis pay that much for Bioware? Or was it because EAFC 27 has made more than $500 million in less than a month, and they pump one of those out YEARLY?

Veilguard could have sold 10x better than it did, it could have sold Cyberpunk numbers, and the Saudis would still have closed BioWare. They never wanted that.

2

u/tyehyll 3h ago

BioWare peaked with Mass Effect 2. All diminishing returns after that

2

u/RetnikLevaw 1h ago

3 was pretty good until the last 15 minutes.

2

u/Subject-Fox-9357 3h ago

Velgard was the final nail in the coffin, but to be honest, after ME3 they didn't release any good games. Andromeda and the Inquisition were already terrible, and it only got worse.

2

u/Iago407 3h ago

Dude, these people just lost their jobs. Taking this as an opportunity to drag Veilguard one more time and basically saying “I hope they learned their lesson” is a garbage way to react to this news. Learn some empathy FFS, or at least wait a little longer before kicking these people while they’re down.

2

u/RetnikLevaw 1h ago

Wal-mart is always hiring.

u/profchaos111 4h ago

I think it's not right to pin it all on one game Anthem did far more damage then this game

I also don't think this games failures can be solely blamed on bioware yes the cringe content was all them but here's the thing

this game started life as a traditional DA4 game EA forced a pivot to make the game a live service title so everything was scraped the fortnite art style adopted and mass streamlining

then they changed their mind it wasn't working and pivoted back to a single player title but had a deadline they were mandated to hit and they did. they couldn't remove that live service feel and look which is the biggest reason for its failure when you play it it's very clear this was just a cluster fuck of a development

3

u/Anubra_Khan 3h ago

The title acknowledges this. Veilguard helped dig the grave.

6

u/Real_Piccolo_3370 3h ago

I think it's not right to pin it all on one game Anthem did far more damage then this game

It didnt. Thats just a game that sucked, nobody was invested. Dragon Age is why I checked for Bioware, without that the studio was done.

Yeah so maybe... dont do all that? Them destroying Dragon Age to make a live service piece of trash was a completely optional and stupid decision that cost them hard.

u/SolydSn3k 4h ago

Yes definitely veilguard and not the saudis

/s

11

u/Grouchy_Egg_4202 3h ago

EA was already the masters of killing studios long before the Saudis came into play.

0

u/SolydSn3k 3h ago

That’s true, but the OP feels very capital-G coded & I do not think the point you are making is the point they are making.

u/FrierenKingSimp 3h ago

Love the anti woke chuds coming out of the woodwork to claim victory at the loss of a cultural institution like BioWare

5

u/Remarkable_Pen_3639 3h ago

Bioware isn't much of a loss at this point. Haven't made a good game in a long time and most of what made them good left long ago.

1

u/FrierenKingSimp 3h ago

The loss of the name itself is a loss. Yes they had declined severely over the years but they could have managed to strike a new standard of excellence and quality if they had ever been given the chance. But now they never will.

3

u/WizzardBunny PC 3h ago

It really isn't a loss. BioWare has been worn like an Edgar Suit for over a decade. They should have shut it down before launching Veilguard.

4

u/Remarkable_Pen_3639 3h ago

I really think you're naive if you expected a redemption story.

-2

u/FrierenKingSimp 3h ago

Some chance is higher than zero chance. Which is what we’re at now.

1

u/RetnikLevaw 1h ago

But I thought Veilguard was a return to form?

1

u/FrierenKingSimp 42m ago

Never felt that way, so I would aim this at someone who did ¯_(ツ)_/¯

3

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

The no-talent blue haired hacks that have taken over BioWare have absolutely no ties to what made that company legendary in the past.

5

u/FrierenKingSimp 3h ago

lol, there it is

1

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

The truth.

👏😎

0

u/FrierenKingSimp 3h ago

If you’re a brain dead bigoted moron then yes, I’m sure it is

0

u/WorthBase919 3h ago

My heart goes out to you comrade

1

u/hiddenpequin 3h ago

Lmao if you think ea learned from that ea tried to make it a live service game. Then when it didn’t sell enough they blamed it not being live service.

2

u/TheImplic4tion 4h ago

Agreed. Trying to appeal to a modern vocal audience of wokies who dont actually buy and play games has been the repeating story for a few years now with other games too.

I'm glad the industry is learning. I'm sorry it had to be the hard way for the devs. I love KOTOR.

3

u/Altaneen117 4h ago

Culture war nonsense.

2

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

Keep your head dug in the sand.

All these companies are shuttering and firing these blue hairs en masse.

0

u/Altaneen117 3h ago

Man ME1-3 would have failed in today's culture war chud climate.

Woke game fem Sheps titties aren't even out.

Your user name fits, stay mad at nothing and hate anyone who's different like a good lil lemming.

Be mad at whatever you favorite streamer wants you to be mad at.

1

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

You make no sense and have no idea what made the original ME great, because you are someone with no understanding of creating something with passion from the ground up.

-1

u/Altaneen117 3h ago

I played the series as it released. It was incredible. I remember the pearl clutching about gay characters then like I remember the pearl clutching about trans characters now.

The difference today is the goon pilled and red pilled people have teamed up to not play anything that doesn't have a Mc that's a straight white man or a anime character with jiggle physics.

Capital G Gamers have always been insufferable but today's are also very loud.

2

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

You think the dialogue and storytelling of the gay characters was the same as OH BY THE WAY IM NON BINARY. OH I CALL THIS PULLIGN A BARVE.

You are the one who has been ideologically captured and can not see the truth.

And it is laid bare before you: shuttered game company after shuttered game company, all of them having recently been in the midst of woke bullshit.

The company that made Gears of War is next.

0

u/Altaneen117 3h ago

You using "blue hairs" as some sort of pejorative tells me all I need to know about you. I hope you get free of that anger. If not stay mad for nothing.

2

u/Mad_For_Nothing 3h ago

W Anger 👏😎

1

u/Pleasant-Fix-6169 4h ago

The main reason Veilguard released the way it did was because of EA to begin with, but it is sad to see Bioware go. With luck a competent studio may buy the IPs at least.

3

u/ema778308 4h ago

Enter cd proyekt to Rescue BioWare lol

-3

u/Foreign_Cobbler_1740 4h ago

The game is overhated, but it was definitely similar to Andromeda. Far below expectations. But I definitely hoping to see them sell off the IPs. Given what EA said their focus is on, selling these IPs is just beneficial. Not like someone else making a Dragon Age or Mass Effect game will take away from Battlefield, Apex Legends and the sports games they focus on these days. Sell the IPs.

4

u/plebbut 4h ago

You didn't even play it

-12

u/El-Drunko 4h ago

It really didn't dipshit.

Andromeda underperformed, Anthem bombed and then Veilguard.

12

u/plebbut 4h ago

So..it did help the dig the grave

0

u/El-Drunko 3h ago

Sure if you ignore the fact that Anthem was a monumental flop that led to them standing in the grave to begin with.

6

u/plebbut 3h ago

I'm french and even I know what this phrase means. It helped dig the grave, and you agree with it

-4

u/DaddyDeWitt PlayStation 4h ago

Can someone explain what is this post referring to?

7

u/xGenocidest 3h ago

Veilguard had really shitty writing and characters. One of these was a non binary character that had an incredibly awkward scene where it came out to their parents, like it was out of some modern sitcom. And the "romance" was even more awkward as it playfully growled at you.

Also one of the other characters misgendered them, and then did pushups to make up for it.

It was just incredibly cringe, Woke 1 stuff on top of all the other bad writing.

6

u/RetnikLevaw 3h ago

Bioware is gone.

6

u/Trading_shadows 4h ago

Bioware closed.

-5

u/lisaissmall 3h ago

bioware shut down and OP is blaming it on “woke” as opposed to the actual legitimate reasons it didn’t survive.

-5

u/IndustryRobertPlant 3h ago

Anytime I see someone say “modern audience,” I know their opinion is worthless.

1

u/ReMeDyIII 3h ago

Well top devs say such terminology for their games, so is their opinion as equally worthless? [1] [2]

0

u/IndustryRobertPlant 3h ago

When people say “modern audience” as an insult. They’re basically just saying “anyone who isn’t a straight white male incel.”

-1

u/dungleploop 3h ago

no...no it didn't

-10

u/NombieTeeth8 4h ago

Oh look more white knighting and clouting, you guys don't give a shit that this happened to the devs and they lost their jobs and their livelihood.

6

u/plebbut 4h ago

Oh no how terrible

-3

u/NombieTeeth8 3h ago

Womp womp

-9

u/WorthBase919 4h ago

I personally think it was the backlash that killed this game. Gotta get that click money because learning a skill is hard. Good thing we have ai eliminating the need for skills coming up!
