Other When all consoles are the same high price as gaming PCs
I know it's not confirmed, but with the rumored price of the next Xbox being over $1200, we know it's a sign that gaming is cooked.
I mean the whole point of consoles were that they were a cheaper options them gaming PCs. But if they are the same price, then what's the point? And even with PCs being too expensive to upgrade, people will not bother.
I mean, do they think we would take out second mortgages to keep up with the newest tech? Of course not. They would need to save money on important stuff, and entertainment is the first thing they will cut.
Hopefully, this will change before the next Xbox release and the RAMpocalypse ends, or else it's over for gaming!

No problems, I don’t need new hardware. I have all Sony consoles in working order, all Xboxes in working order, Megadrive, SNES, Dreamcast, Saturn, FPGA, software emulation. I’m gonna be good for the next 1,000 years.

Not true! Some of us care about his mom.
But also he's right. I could never buy another console or PC and still never run out of things to play.

u/kilertree 8h ago
The next Xbox is a PC and console.
3
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 7h ago
And?
Console gamers don't want a PC. If they did they would be PC gamers.
1
u/kilertree 7h ago
OP was saying that consoles are expensive as PCs but the Xbox is a PC. Also I think the Xbox series X's development mode probably stopped researchers from trying to crack it open. Making the next Xbox a PC hybrid will also probably detur researcher's from trying to jail break the system.
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 4h ago
Not sure why Microsoft would want to just willingly hand all their game sales over to Steam, but not much microsoft does makes much sense anyway.
1
u/coffeewithdoenut 3h ago
This is a fair consideration. Xbox could attempt to make more off the console to compensate. they can also make it easy for the console to connect to Xbox out of the gate. A lot of people would likely stay in their ecosystem out of ignorance or apathy to other storefronts
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 3h ago
But then why even make it a PC then? Idk the whole thing just makes no sense.
1
u/coffeewithdoenut 2h ago
Because you can then sell it as “comparable with office” or whatever else people like and then it helps justify the price and purchase. Idk I’m just brainstorming
1
u/FlarblesGarbles 43m ago
They're already basically PCs as it stands.
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 38m ago
Architecture wise, sure. But what I am saying is if theyre going to sell a PC running windows that allows you to use other storefronts, they're going to lose a ton of money because a lot of people are just going to buy all their games through Steam meaning they'll make no money from 3rd party games. People HAVE to buy their digital games from Microsoft on Xbox as it is right now. That changes if it's a PC.
1
u/FlarblesGarbles 36m ago
It won't be as simple as "Windows" but it will be a PC.
This is why they've been doing the disc to digital conversion programme.
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 34m ago
What does that mean practically? How is it a PC if it is going to have some sort of locked down operating system.
1
u/kilertree 3h ago
Their games are on steam and some of your Xbox purchases are pc purchases.
1
u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 3h ago
Yeah but if they just sell a PC the majority of the sales would likely shift to Steam

"Same high price as PCs" lmao PC components are substantially higher. I have a PC with a CPU/Mobo/ram that I bought late last year and a GPU from 2024. Paid around 1800 for all the components, but in pc part picker the same thing would go for 2700 today. People just ignore this because they look at individual prices instead of the whole. Consoles are still the cheaper option.

2
u/emancipated-hemroid 4h ago
Random thought here , probably a dumb take but.....
Is there no possibility in the world of some kind of massive lawsuit over consumer rights /price fixing ... Or whatever legal term ... To file against the producers of memory /ram/ssd/ chips ?? If the price of components is going up because data centers and governments and big tech is buying up everything before giving consumers a chance at a purchase and or price fixing to keep average civilians from buying said components or slowing consumers down intentionally (with pricing) so all the elites can have their first ???
And yes I understand fighting governments and big tech with such a lawsuit is futile at best ... Is it still not a legitimate possibility???
2
u/goatjugsoup 1h ago
Why? Did current or future prices erase the ability to play the loads of games already out?
4
u/Test88Heavy 8h ago
Where are you finding a good gaming PC for $1200 that makes them the same price? 😐
I think this pricing will just increase the desire for renting/leasing consoles or streaming games directly online instead.
5
u/spider-jedi 7h ago
They aren't. They just want to clown on console even if there is no truth behind what they are saying

I can build a beast here for about £1500, without even checking around for good deals. Just a quick PC Part Picker list that I made in a few minutes.
5700x3D, 9070, 32gb Gskill 3600, MSI b550 mobo, MSI 750w power supply, Samsung 970 1TB, Thermalright peerless assassin cooler.
All named brands parts, none of them are on sale, a slightly overkill PSU I just chose something quickly that would work. You could pick a few of these components up cheaper and spend extra to get a 9070xt if you wanted.
The prices are definitely inflated a bit sure, but you can absolutely still build a baller PC at a decent price if you have any idea what you are doing. This list came to £1501, took me 3 minutes to chuck a bunch of random parts in. If I took the time to search around for deals, I reckon I could build this for about 1250. Or, keep it 1500 and get the 9070xt.
Nobody needs a 9800x3D and DDR5 lmao. Stick to a DDR4 plaform, get one of the top 3-4 cpus. Then spend all of the money that you saved by not buying over-priced RAM on your GPU.
1
u/Derpykins666 9m ago
You can some okay pc's for that amount. I probably wouldn't consider your PC very 'good' until you're spending more in the 2k-3k range though.
But that's kind of the point. If you're already spending like 1200-1800 dollars, you might as well just get a PC at that point. The marketplace is open, there's like hundreds of thousands of games, emulation, old games, new games, abandonware, whatever. You can legit get a really decent gaming PC at like COSTCO right now for like 2-3k. Might as well save up that extra 1.2k and go a little bigger, you'd basically be investing for the long haul, or for as long as you can, and with how things are going, essentially future proofing yourself for as long as possible.

Best buy has good deals on right now in canada. I'm seeing an
i7ryzen 7, rtx50805060 and 32gb ram for $1700 canadian. When I see the range of 1200-1600 from MS I'm assuming its 1600 until proven otherwise, the lower number is there to reduce backlash only.EDIT: fixed my misremembering the CPU and phone autocorrecting RTX5060 to RTX5080
1
u/HeavyHighway6433 7h ago
Yeah I have to see that to believe it, can you send the link? The cheapest I'm seeing on best buy with those specs are around $3000usd, and anything under that is open box.
0
u/Carrisonfire 7h ago
I mistyped slightly, its a ryzen 7 not i 7 and a 5060. Still a damn good deal.
I'm seeing open box (in stores not online) and refurbished for as little as 1100.
2
u/idkimhereforthememes 6h ago
5060 to 5080 is quite a fucking change lmfao
0
u/Carrisonfire 6h ago
When comparing to console power not really.
1
u/idkimhereforthememes 5h ago
The post jst about next gen
1
u/Carrisonfire 4h ago
I'm not expecting next gen to be more powerful than a 5060. Prices would be much higher.
1
1
u/HeavyHighway6433 6h ago
That makes sense, cause I'm thinking no way a 5080 is going for that low in this economy lol.
Keep in mind that particular cpu on this one is 4 years old and on AM4 architecture, and the ram is DDR4. That price may be a deal today but still way overpriced. I bought a gaming laptop on sale last holiday season from microcenter with a ryzen 7, 5060, 32gb DDR5 for $800 usd (~1100 CAD). I also bought a 16GB 5060ti gpu for my dad's pc for $450usd at the same time. I see those are double in stores now. So that goes to show how high PC prices have also risen this past year.
1
u/Carrisonfire 4h ago
Yeh I meant to type 5060, my phone autocorrects it tho (I'm guessing I've typed 5080 enough that it thinks I mean that).
Sure but we're comparing to consoles, I'm guessing that is still going to be more powerful than a next gen xbox. I don't like the way hardware prices have gone but they are what they are, can't really compare prices now to before. AI is driving the rising prices and MS is one of the primary drivers, they could take the hit on hardware cost since it's their damn fault. I know that won't happen tho.
1
u/HeavyHighway6433 3h ago
I highly doubt a 5060 is going to be more powerful than a next gen Xbox. The current gen series x has a gpu that's the equivalent of a 3060ti, and that came out around the same time. Considering next gen is expected to come out holiday season of 2028, that would put the 5060 over 3 years behind. I don't think there's any way a 3 year old lower end Nvidia gpu will be more powerful. Especially considering its only 10-20% faster than the 3060ti. Hell the ps5 pro is already roughly on par with a 5060ti. I believe any equivalent PC will cost twice as much at the minimum unless prices go down by then, but time will tell.
3
u/karsh36 8h ago
Dude those console prices are less than pc prices right now. PC prices went up with console prices as they both use the ram and storage that ai is gobbling up
0
u/Carrisonfire 7h ago
I can find decend gaming pc deals for those prices in Canadian dollars, no shot there aren't better deals in US currency.
0
u/DocShady 7h ago
Console pricing will still be better then a good PC or on par with a decent mid range PC, but the days of the affordability argument is over. That went out the window $1200 dollars ago.
1
u/karsh36 7h ago
It’ll still be more affordable
1
u/DocShady 7h ago
I think you forget the timeline we live in. That word ain't gonna mean shit in the coming years if things keep going the way their going.
-2
u/Corvus_Hood33 7h ago
Literally found a prebuilt that can run almost anything with hardly any optimization for 850. A ps5 is 900

1
u/Aggravating_Plan11 7h ago
No matter what your poison of choice is, the days of I’m just going to buy the new X or upgrade my X are gone. If game devs are smart they will carry on developing for the hardware people have now and getting optimisations done or their target audience is going to shrink rapidly over the next decade.

u/Dry_Rent_8646 6h ago
Instead of a new console I'm thinking of snagging an ayn thor, it's like a ds with oleds and runs android, and can run lighter steam games, I've seen new vegas and fo 4 run very smooth, Skyrim with adjustments, I have a massive backlog of games and when that's done, emulators galore, and on that device it's just so easy to pop open and play and close the lid when I'm done... I'm excited
1
u/Red_Box89 6h ago
This should be taken with a grain of salt. Can you acquire a gaming PC for $500-$600? Of course. Will that particular PC be better than a PS5 or Xbox? Absolutely not.
1
u/QuinSanguine 6h ago
Nah, there's always 10+ year old cheap, used PC parts that will play 90% of games ever made. I'll just play those and say fuck these big corporations.
1
u/theboxturtle57 6h ago
Triple a developers need to learn to optimize or we are just going to play indie games that our pcs can handle. Yes average reddit viewer we do not have $2500 rigs with 4080s.
1
u/Capital_Paramedic261 6h ago
We should all stick to mobile at this point or just buy a 500$ Office PC to play indie and 2015 games
1
1
u/AcanthisittaWeird94 6h ago
Yeah its probably a time to hang my controller after GTA 6. AI slop will fuck gaming anyway.
1
u/PS420sk8 5h ago
If by touch grass you mean buying up enough physical media to last multiple lifetimes then yeah
1
u/RollingDownTheHills 5h ago
I'm perfectly happy with my PS5 Pro and have a backlog that'll take literal years to get through. Plus the PS5 will be supported for a long time. Can't say I'm too worried at this point.
1
u/Jaxornd90 5h ago
I've had my Ps5 for years now sure it's probably going to sound like a jet engine when I play GTA6 oh well 😂
1
u/ChiralParticle 4h ago edited 4h ago
You're acting as if consoles are the only ones that got more expensive. Not even a year ago I was looking at buying a pc and it was approx. 2k$ and I thought it was too expensive and wanted to wait for the crash. Now a pc with the same specs would cost almost 3k and it's just mid-range not anything really fancy. Also, newest report suggests that Xbox Helix may cost somewhere even up to 1800$ (it's meant to be console-pc hybrid) and another insider claims PS6 ram and storage alone will cost 700$. Insane how everything is affected and how the prices keep skyrocketing.
1
1
u/Electronic-Wind-7952 4h ago
Consoles will still be the cheaper gaming option though.. pc’s and their components are only going up aswell…
1
1
u/RedScud39 3h ago
I mainly play ARPGs and RTS/TBS on my PC and I have enough of a backlog to last me until the market corrects itself.
1
u/Legitimate-Wear5933 3h ago
Nah, Nintendo will just rule. Nintendo will not make a thousand-dollar system. Game companies will all be back under the Nintendo Seal of Approval. The Oligarchs are trying too hard to make cloud gaming happen. They are going to bring back cheaper consoles.
Then they will cry about that also.
1
1
u/LoSouLibra 1h ago
People who can't afford the next generation will just keep gaming on what they have regardless.
PC is permanent cross gen and the lowest common denominator always stagnates. PC will only get even more expensive too.
People weren't buying consoles because they were cheaper than PC's in the 80's. They were buying them because you can play games on them. People who could afford them bought them.
Some people want to game on PC, some don't. You can watch movies on a PC, but people still choose to buy a Smart TV instead.
Nothing really changes.
1
u/FlarblesGarbles 43m ago
Gaming isn't actually cooked. Existing games will still exist. So will existing hardware. It's still possible to build an older PC and play older games.
I can play nearly every game ever made on my PCs.
I've got over 1500 games in my Steam library, and loads of Switch/Switch 2 games.
Sony and Xbox console divisions may be cooked, but they aren't the entirety of gaming.
1
u/NombieTeeth8 8h ago
Nope we just moved over to PC, and what do you know the PC Master race was right, it is better.
5
u/Reciter5613 8h ago
But did it cost you an arm and a leg, given how high component prices are?
-5
u/NombieTeeth8 8h ago
Nope it cost money like everything else in the world cute downvote tho have one back. Why would I keep pissing money into the console that is getting rid of discs that I had piled high and is charging me every single month to play online with awful user interface and no way to customize any game that I play.
And I've been a console gamer since consoles first ever existed. So yeah it's about time I make the switch to PC can't believe it took me this long of getting raked over the coals by console makers that didn't care and are very much showing how much they don't give a shit about the consumers right now.
4
u/Rob_van_Wanst 8h ago
PC is ok, but nowhere near as convenient as consoles. I have more fun planning/building PCs than actually playing on PC. Always finding myself gravitating to my couch and playing the good old consoles 🤷🏻 But each to their own, I guess 😉
3
u/spider-jedi 7h ago
PC gamers still partak in the console wars themselves just like consoles gamers. Same as you as I've gotten old I just prefer to play on my sofa with a big tv. Playing on PC at a desk star6yo feel like work and no gaming chair was able to change that feeling.
Now all I care about is having fun. I don't need 120fps with ultra high setting anymore. I just want it to work
1
2
u/HeavyHighway6433 7h ago
Same here. I built my first PC in like 2018 and have been upgrading since, now I have a 4070 to super and 7800x3d but still play my Xbox more.
2
u/Elegant_Relief_4999 7h ago
This is why I love my Steam Deck. I just sit (or lay) on my couch and stream games from my pc running a 4080S.
2
u/Remote-Cause755 7h ago
I have a PC and mostly play on a couch. All you need is a long HDMI cable and a wireless controller
1
u/Dry_Rent_8646 6h ago
Pretty easy to stream to your tv using sunlight/moonlight, or plug it right in, it's also still wayyy cheaper to buy a PC that's a dedicated console with higher quality than a console, not to mention the thousands of emulated games
1
u/method115 6h ago
Same I help people build their (or I did) and it's fun but I've preferred console ever since they started hitting 60 FPS reliably. As far as prices my cousin just paid 2.4k for a gaming PC so not sure how that's the same as console prices.
0
u/CrashZ07 6h ago
Same. I have a PC with a 5080 and I still gravitate towards my PS5.
1
u/AndroidSheeps 6h ago
I have a PC with a 5080 and I still gravitate towards my PS5.
What does a PS5 offer over a PC with a 5080?
0
u/MotorCityCee 7h ago
No TF we didn’t lmfao.
I got a switch 2 for $450 I’m good, PC price is going up and it’s still more expensive than consoles.
1
u/NombieTeeth8 7h ago
Since I'm a part of the console people I still consider myself as part of we I don't give a fuck if you don't consider yourself a part of we or if you do because I'm definitely moving over to PC, you can get bent. I've suffered through this shit since the first console was ever made I'm not doing it anymore if you want to, be my guest.
So yes "we" did. As is every single console gamer I have known also has done moved to PC already or is about to, I don't really care that you didn't. Because "we" all did. Lmfao.
0
u/MotorCityCee 7h ago
You sound like a stupid dipshit lmfao, console gaming is growing at an alarming rate. A $350 PS5 just launched in Japan people are buying sooo many consoles.
“We” join reality idiot.
1
u/NombieTeeth8 7h ago
Slow clap did you pull that insult out of your goodie bag of insults?
That's great for Japan do you live in Japan I don't live in Japan consoles here are worth thousands of dollars which is literally being stated in the post.
Enjoy pissing endless money into a console that doesn't give a shit about you as a consumer. I'm going to go have fun tweaking and modding the hell out of all my games and not having to pay for online subscriptions.
The rest of we did join reality, they jumped ship to PC years ago I'm just a little behind the times and realizing that console makers don't give a shit about you, PC we go!
1
1
u/Warm-Reporter8965 8h ago
Nah I'll still buy one just like I did a steam machine. There's just something convenient about them. Finding a good mini itx build that's 1. Cost effective and 2. Has adequate price to performance is really hard. Yes, you can build one yourself but mini itx parts are expensive so it's nice to just buy something that's already reasonably priced and can play everything without hiccups.
1
u/OtherwiseTonight9390 8h ago
Switched back to reading books a couple years ago due to the state of modern gaming. If console gaming truly becomes this expensive, I’ll continue to stick with $1 books I find at estate sales that provide hours of entertainment while improving my mind. Probably better for my eyes too.
1
u/method115 6h ago
Honestly I don't think it's that bad. You can still buy used PS5s directly from PS for $500. That's not a bad deal.
0
u/OtherwiseTonight9390 6h ago
Price wasn’t the issue: I didn’t like the direction gaming went in the last ten years. Next gen consoles priced at +$1200 is just a nail in the gaming coffin for me, personally.
2
u/method115 6h ago
Ah I see. I thought it was the price but if it's just gaming in general then I get it.
-1
u/tultamunille 7h ago
Does a PC last for decades?
1
u/aporta2 7h ago
yes
-2
u/tultamunille 7h ago
So a 25 year old Windows PC can go online and play games? Hmm…
1
u/aporta2 4h ago
yes.
Maybe not the latest game, but no 25 year old console can do that either if that's what you're implying🤣1
u/tultamunille 2h ago
Planned obsolescence is not built into consoles. I have consoles from the 70s on that still work as intended. Computers do not.
Pong
Atari
Nintendo
Playstation
XBOX
All still play games.
PC? You can’t be serious. I really don’t care what people game on, but PC players can be a weird bunch when being dismissive of consoles.
1
u/aporta2 1h ago
So your argument is that because of 'planned obsolence' it's better to get a console than a pc? Buddy, if you have all those consoles, that means you fricking paid for a new machine like every 2-4 years hahah A PC can play all those games and no need to buy every frickin new console 🤣 Bro flexin money
0
0
u/spderweb 8h ago
Like, for 1200, get the steam deck. Then download emudeck and fill it with your console backlog. Then sell all your console stuff, and wait for a seasonal steam sale.
0
u/kolt437 7h ago
OP's PC is definitely weaker than a console
2
u/TrickOut 7h ago
You can’t really get a Pc that’s weaker than a current gen console anymore, my gaming laptop with a 5060 and a I7 completely dog walks a console from 6 years ago with the equivalent of a 2080 in it
1
u/TheFunPimps 6h ago
My laptop from 2018 runs circles around my ps4 that was purchased new the same year. I've genuinely never seen the debate between pc and console because after the ps2 every console was a gimmick meant to just make unnecessary profits for a genuinely worse gaming experience.
0
u/MrNixxxoN 5h ago
Just get a PS6, it will be cheaper... this next xbox will be the last nail in the coffin for the brand.

Thanks, younger me. You gloriously irresponsible bastard.
