So now, consoles are a 800€ hub for downloading drm locked games. Great. Great great great.

No more used market, no more preservation. Nada.

edit: STOP WITH GAMESTOP omg 😂 go on consumer to consumer platforms instead. If you're in Europe, download Vinted, it's not just to buy cute skirts.

In Sony's all digital world, they'll sell you the game full price but after a few years, you'll have to pay $10 every year to keep that game.

That's the thing the really pisses me off - even If current deals are good, they can change the rules whenever they feel like it.

You spend 1000$$$ in our store? Well to bad we don't support your device anymore, pay it again for a new device

You want to play a classic game from your childhood? Too bad, we threw that version out, now you have to buy to remaster/ remake for full price

You want to lend your game to a family member or child? Piss off, either you buy it again or sell your entire account to them. And If you do that, we ban the account. Try again.

If we accept this, we won't have ANY control of the games we bought with our money

PS3 was supported but a game I owned got pulled and I couldn’t get it anymore they had a different version and I didn’t get a credit. It’s why I get my games on disk.

Maybe I’ll sell it while they’re expensive.

Welcome to pc master race!

I am not a fan of the 'master race' meme, nor is the original creator, Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw.

But I have a Steam library since Portal 2 launched and as of now Valve has been the company with the least amount of problems.

So yeah saving for a good PC or even a Steam Deck is the current plan

Are you using playstation?

Mostly, yes. I had main playstation (1-5) every generation, though usually only when they released a cheaper slim version.

There was also the Vita which I really liked, but it wasn't supported after 1,5 - 2 years, which was a shame.

But why? Based on your previous comment you don't really like the platforms and/or have trust issues with their decisions

You can use Playstation without ever buying a digital game, that's my case and then most of those problems aren't there anymore

Because I have my issues with their current plans and dristrust a corporation to hold control uncontested.

Earlier genrations of playstation consoles have always been pretty good deals for me.

PS1 and PS2 I played as a child, even if I didn't understand everything. It was easy to just plug in and play and the greatest hurdle were the memory cards.

PS3 had a bad start, but it was so expensive I didn't think I would ever have one. Then I got one for christmas, and had a glow up that shaped how I play games to this day.

PS4 was a damn good console and continued what made the latter half of PS3 so great, awesome and varied exclusives plus a stable library of third party and indie games.

PS5 and we're back at the price problem. Though I landed a well paying job at the time (and then rented games from the library, lol). But even then I could tell that Sony got lazy again, just like they did in the beginning of PS3. It seems they need some pressure or they won't perform their best.

PS6 was not on my mind, to be honest. I didn't see why I should buy another console when we haven't even pushed the PS5 to it's aboslute limits. Also I want to play games and mit just buy hardware.
What game concept can't be realized on the PS5 that we actually really need more powerful hardware for?

TLDR I liked playstation in the past, I don't like What they're doing now, and I am this angry because it used to mean so much to me

They aren't disabling old systems or stopping discs from working.

Not yet, but they could, and there is no safeguard a normal consumer can use to prevent them from that. It's the uncertainty that irks me

Even on consoles that aren’t hooked up to the internet?

3

u/Al_Hakeem65 Jul 01 '26

That would probably the only way to keep them save, but it's not really feasible. I for one use(d) my playstations to also watch movies, shows and YouTube.

Once I connect them to the internet, they could be comprimised again.

It may sound paranoid, but on a technical level, they could do it, and I think they are willing to it.
Sony has eroded player trust in recent years, so I wouldn't put it past them to release a system software update that renders old consoles ineffecient or even useless

2

u/KillbotIV Jul 01 '26

Yes because that's illegal, certainly in my country and the EU. But there's a certain way to stop it and that is disconnect from the online if you're worried.

2

u/Al_Hakeem65 Jul 01 '26

It's allegedly illegal, for now. I'm sure they'll find a way if they want. When that happens, there is nothing physical that we can do to prevent that.

Yeah I get that I could just not go online, but that's not really feasible. I use my playstation for movies, shows, music and YouTube too. Just connecting once can comprimise the console.

Just like they did with the ps2, and the psp? The ps3 is 20 years old they could have done that years ago to sell more ps4. I think you're safe now.
