Toledo Area Resources

Things are rough. No one can really argue about that, right? I thought maybe a big post about available resources might help people out. This is of course not comprehensive, but I can edit and add if folks want to offer more.

OhioKan - assistance for relatives/kinship caregivers raising children.

Lutheran Social Services of NW Ohio - Behavioral health counseling, substance use addiction counseling, reentry transition services

Toledo Public Library The library is so much more than books. They have free streaming services and audiobooks, DVDs, CDs. They have community rooms that are free to use. Printing services, passport, dog license.. so much!

Pathway - Home Energy Assistance

Planned Parenthood Emergency Contraception (Morning-After Pill), Birth Control, Pregnancy Testing and Planning, Gender-Affirming Care, Prenatal and Postpartum Services, Wellness and Preventive Care, Sexual and Reproductive Concerns, STD Testing and Treatment, HIV Services, Vaccines

Neighborhood Bridges for Anthony Wayne - people can make requests that are then emailed out to a mailing list for community members to help.

St. Vincent de Paul Locations by ZIP code - Assistance varies by location - best way to ask what is available is to call the closest Catholic church to you and ask for the St Vincent de Paul committee. They distribute vouchers for their thrift store on Airport Hwy.

Will there be any accountability for last night's emergency response?

This has been a mess. Just a few points on how the response fell flat.

- I did not receive an emergency alert to my phone about any of this until 4am

- They did not shut down i75. So on my drive home at 12;30 last night traffic came to a stand still because visibility was 0. So i spent about 30-45 mins in my car in the thickest part of the cloud. Never seen any emergency lights on the road, why 3 hours after the incident, did we not shut down the highway that was white out visibility?

- It was until this morning that we had an accurate idea of what the chemical was, why did it take so long to publicly identify it?

- the evacuation areas were shockingly close to the incident. To the point that the parking lots were filled with smoke by 1am

- "dont call 911 we are overloaded", yet they wouldnt use the emergency notification system until the 4am

- "evacuate" How? we cannot see. How can we evacuate?

- they put on a spokesman from the fire department at around 1130 who seemed to have no idea what was happening, just that it was bad

- EPA didnt show until midnight? i mean what are they gonna really do, but still. Chemical leak for hours and you dilly dally your way to the scene

- Cue 15 years from now when half of us develop cancer and die, we'll just get a " we shouldve done better, we will next time"

Last night was just ridiculous. I cant think of a time I was more afraid for my life than trying to drive with 0 visibility while I was trapped in a mysterious toxic cloud.

The reason we’re not getting any real answers…

… is because they don’t have any.

They don’t know what the exposure impacts are from this magnitude and duration.

They don’t know what the long term impacts will be.

They don’t know what the damage to pets and wildlife are.

They don’t know if runoff will be contaminated and impact the water supply.

They don’t know if we should ventilate our homes or not, or when.

Maybe it’s unreasonable to expect them to have answers to some random ass chemical going boom in our community, but damn at least own it. Stop making us guess around at everything. I get that you don’t know… but tell me you don’t know and not that “everything causes cancer.”

I’ve read so many comments to official posts with no responses and aren’t addressed on the incident web pages provided. Let’s get real… they don’t freaking know.

All of the response seems to be around how to not “cause panic” because we’re little children that can’t handle hard facts and real news.

Inb4 it’s no big deal - you don’t know, either. Nobody does. If they did know they’d tell us.

Sorry. Rant over. Had to get it off my chest.

No offense to Toledo, but shouldn't someone with a scientific background be speaking about what's going on rather than politicians? If feels like the recommendations y'all are receiving are being made up/ guesses from people without a scientific background

I mean its kinda insane they had the physical address and chemical wrong for at least 8 hours. Im trying to look up news about it and not really seeing people with a scientific background speaking on it. If not in Toledo, does the state of ohio have any scientists in government positions that could explain it?

EPA Summary of the Glycidyl Methacrylate Release

As suggested, making a dedicated post for visibility. The EPA website has a summary of events that is a bit more detailed than I've seen reported elsewhere:

October 21, 2026, 10 a.m. Update

The chemical release from the tank continues. Attempts by the fire department to contain the release were not successful. The tank has been compromised and the chemical within the tank is completing a reaction. The city determined that the safest course of action is to let the reaction complete. The city’s evacuation and shelter-in-place orders are still in place. EPA is supporting the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department, which remains the lead agency at the site, by providing technical assistance and air monitoring around the evacuation zone.

Background

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department responded to a release of a hazardous material called glycidyl methacrylate from an approximate 5,000 gallon intermodal tank around 10 p.m. near 1050 Progress Ave. The city initially determined that the release required a 1-mile evacuation zone.

EPA was asked to help around midnight and arrived on scene at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21. EPA provided technical support to the fire department, including requesting air modeling to help guide the city’s evacuation decisions.

At 4:24 a.m., the city ordered a 3-mile shelter-in-place zone around the site. Around 6 a.m., EPA began mobile air monitoring for volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and particulates around the edge of the evacuation zone to support the fire department’s own monitoring and monitoring being completed by the potentially responsible party.

EPA will share air monitoring results with local and federal health officials, who use the information to make health decisions.

Glycidyl methacrylate has a strong odor, so people will likely smell it before it reaches hazardous levels. EPA advises residents with health questions to contact the Toledo Lucas-County Health Department at 419-213-4100.

Updates and guidance for residents are available here:

My Frontier Internet has been down since 1:30 this afternoon...is anyone else having issues? Frontier is doing what they normally do and not communicating

The hazardous material is glycidyl methacrylate.

Not methyl methacrylate. There is a difference. I'm no expert, but I've read glycidyl is actually more toxic, and can cause lifelong issues, including cancer.

Has anyone felt any effects from Chemfogpalooza?

I live about 5 miles west of “ground zero” and my place of business about 3.5 miles. I worked all day today and now since I got home my throat and chest feel irritated. My child had flu symptoms about 4 days ago and I got the flu shot last week so I can’t tell if it’s a bit of that (no symptoms for me before this afternoon) or if it’s from this chemical bullshit. Is anyone experiencing any irritation or sore chest/throat?

Where are the best tacos in TOLEDO?

Tell me where to get the best tacos. I’m talking about the type that makes your eyes roll back and you tell everyone about.

I’ve tried many places but haven’t found “the one”.

I’m looking for places in Toledo, not surrounding areas, please.

Thank you!

Hazmat evacuation zone. Do not confuse heavy fog with the chemical plume.

Be aware that there is heavy fog in Toledo right now. If you are not close to the area depicted in this map and the air smells fine outside, it is likely just heavy fog.

Places to watch the Crew match tonight

Hello! I’m visiting from Columbus and am wondering if there are any places in the Toledo area that will have the Columbus Crew Open Cup Final on. I watched some of the World Cup at The Full 90, but iirc they’re only usually open on weekends for Prem matches.
