Artificial Intelligence PewDiePie unveils ‘uncensored’ Ajax AI model built to run on home PCs — creator says OpenAI banned him twice over model distillation used to build his product

I feel the reason all these AI company CEOs are now wanting to come together for "regulation" of some sort is because they like other industries want to simply craft a bunch of rules and laws that ultimately benefits them. I could see them demanding open source models be outlawed just so they maintain control.

they can cry and scream all they wont but it wont change shit. companies that make video games, movies, songs, tv shows, books, etc. already have the law on their side in that piracy is illegal. and yet its very easy to find pirated versions of all that media. laws dont mean shit if enforcement is impossible. open ai models are about the same size as modern video games (3GB to 100GB) and run on similar consumer grade so stopping the spread is impossible

More likely outcome is that Nvidia starts making it so that LLMs and diffusion models can’t run on consumer-grade GPUs. Just look at how they responded to the bitcoin boom back around COVID - they did the same exact thing.

i am using proton as my only email, they host mail for 3 domains I own. I also use their drive, password keeper and vpn products, I bought the annual unlimited package for US110 a year. All of their products are somewhat under powered, they just don't have the financial resources to do everything as well as google, but they also don't spy on me and sell my personal data to anyone with a buck like google does, so i am happy with them so far. They also have free email accounts and other products.

Though most people are on much more complete harnesses: hermes, codex, openclaw (100-400k stars, vs 50k-80k for goose/ody) etc. which have their own problems as it's explained in the video.

Open source would allow you to train your own, with the underlying code of the AI being available to look at.
Open weights is the AI after it's been trained, and is similar to just giving away a free program that's more modifiable than a normal one.
286
u/meneldal2 19d ago
Afaik here Open Source would be tricky because you'd likely be providing evidence that could be used against you and make it a slam dunk for OpenAI when they sue you.
It is very likely some methods they used ran into the very anti user laws the US has passed to make big corpos happy.

34
u/Atheren 19d ago
Honestly now that I think about it more even if he did travel he could ignore it anyway it unless it was somehow elevated to a criminal case. It's practically unheard of to be jailed over a civil case. If there's no us assets to seize, open AI doesn't have much legal recourse unless they go through the Japanese court system or the court system of wherever his money is held.
And at that point he might also have needed to have done something in their jurisdictions which is well beyond my non-professional understanding of how this all works.

Open source would be releasing the training pipeline for the model as well as the dataset it was trained on. Open weight is releasing the resulting output of that process that can be fine-tuned.
For 99.999% of people Open source is useless because there is a large amount of compute needed to train such a model. Open-sourcing models typically helps enterprises far more than people which is why it’s rarely done.

Waiting for some nerd to correct me on a technicality but, in a nutshell….
Open weight can be fine-tuned (LoRA), but the base model can be proprietary.
Open source means everything needed to recreate the model (dataset, scripts, etc) is available publicly. So, you can recreate the model from scratch, provided you have access to the necessary hardware.

Just in case anybody isn't aware and curious:
This is "newsworthy" because it's PewDiePie. Nothing he did is particularly unique or interesting. Uncensored models are pretty easy to create, get, and use, so it's a bit weird that there's such an emphasis on that aspect of this. Furthermore, his model is a fine-tuned Qwen3.5-9B model. So it's a few generations old and very small. You can go find uncensored Qwen3.8-27B models which run on consumer hardware, are quite capable, and can be setup and used in minutes if you have a good enough GPU. Additionally, his custom harness doesn't seem to offer anything particularly interesting, and him being banned from OpenAI for distillation says more about his naivety than it does his ingenuity.
And I'm not coming at PewDiePie, specifically. I don't know what he's pitching or anything (I don't really care). He's free to talk about his experience with this stuff and obviously he has an audience. I'm more commenting on this lazy article reaching the top of r/all on a technology subreddit. I'm sure there are people here who are confused about all of this, and I just think it's worth pointing out that anybody with a decent GPU and enough free time and interest in AI can accomplish the same stuff in a day if they wanted. There's just not much of a story here.

u/Wahngrok 19d ago

The audience of this subreddit ironically don't seem to be particularly technologically-minded. Especially in the past few years when this subreddit became pretty much only Elon Musk, Trump, social media, and now AI, etc.
I checked the top 20 articles on this subreddit's front page. Literally all of them are negative sentiment. This subreddit is doomscrolling incarnate. Obviously there are many negative aspects of technology showing itself recently but I would expect at least some positive news here. It simply isn't healthy to wallow in a subreddit like this

Yeah, he probably posted something since he has been playing around with setting up his own local LLM and some "journalist" decided it was newsworthy that he did something very basic with 5 minutes of googling.
17
u/mattheweddington 19d ago
I find these comments interesting. I don't believe most people would be able to do something like this, let alone know the search terms to even come to the conclusion you came to in 5 minutes. Surely this is easy for a smart computer scientist/ engineer, but I can't imagine it's "very basic" like you claim. I know for certain I couldn't do it lol
8
u/some_clickhead 19d ago
I think the point was mostly that if this has been done by someone who is not internet famous this would not be noteworthy news, because from a tech standpoint nothing groundbreaking has been accomplished.
But I don't think Pewds is trying to be a tech entrepreneur, he's basically just playing around with tech and posting about it because of course you'd want to make videos about your new favourite hobby when you're a Youtuber.
3
u/RollingTater 19d ago
You can't really do it in 5m, but in the current world you could literally ask chatgpt for step by step instructions. Get an agent with terminal access (ie: use codex or cursor) and they can literally set everything up for you, from downloading to training to running.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MrTastix 18d ago
Well the funny part is AI can help bridge the gap.
But perhaps the more pertinent thing here is that all this comes after PewDiePie already started on his journey to using Linux and removing as much Google as he can from his workflow.
So the path to this for him wasn't "I just searched shit up in 5 mins" but more "I knew I could search it up by having done all this other confusing shit already".
Linux alone often requires a lot of awkward troubleshooting. If you grew up using Google religiously for basically everything like I did, the path to learning Linux wasn't really that hard. If you didn't, I could see why it would be a greater struggle.

u/Shapes_in_Clouds 19d ago
Qwen3.8-27B models which run on consumer hardware, are quite capable, and can be setup and used in minutes if you have a good enough GPU
Is 16GB VRAM enough? Have 64GB DDR5 ram as well.
11
u/mr_doms_porn 19d ago
Not sure about that specific model but there are ton's of solid LLMs you can fit in a 16gb card. If you use LM Studio as your backend, it will show you which models you can fit on your GPU before you download them. If you move the KV cache (context) to system ram you'd be able to run Gemma4-12B with q8 or q6 quality.
3
u/Yashema 19d ago edited 19d ago
A $4000 desktop can run a 100B+ model, but the token generation rate would be about 25% of the cloud or API, so a task that takes 5 minutes on the cloud would take 20 minutes. The Context window is also sacrificed.
Not to say they don't have good use cases, but the limitations need to be acknowledged.
→ More replies (2)19
u/Nater5000 19d ago
You can certainly experiment with Qwen3.8-27B with only 16GB VRAM (and 64GB DDR5 RAM), but you'll have to use a pretty compressed version of the model (i.e., performance will hurt), you'll have limited context, and it'll likely be quite slow. My experience with this specific model is that 24GB of VRAM is the minimum for getting non-trivial utility from the model (and even then, it's still quite slow and limited). Still, you should be able to try it yourself very easily.
You should be able to plug your GPU into the "hardware compatibility" feature on Unsloth's Hugging Face page for the model and see what you can reasonably run. If you want to get this running without any fuss, I'd literally point some frontier model at that page and tell it to install it on your machine. Not that it's hard to setup manually, but if you already have Codex, Claude, etc., on your machine, then this is likely a prompt it and come back in a few minutes and it's done kind of job.
If you end up trying that and wanting to explore more, then you'll be all set up to explore other models like this easily. I'd recommend checking out Unsloth's Qwen3.6-35B-A3B (which can be quite performant with less compute because of the MoE architecture) or even their Qwen3.5-9B (which PewDiePie fine-tuned) which can definitely run on your compute (granted, it's quite "dumb").

his model is a fine-tuned Qwen3.5-9B model. So it's a few generations old and very small.
This was literally my reaction right here. I spent the last 6 months developing my own app I run in my homelab that makes use of home assistant preview edition for voice control and uses nextjs/postgres as a front end. It then allows you to pick and choose AI models to run within the application from that GUI and I made commands center around that model. You can do things like add events to calendars, play music, ask general questions about my home etc.....
Reason I bring this all up is I had to abandon the project when I realized running any AI model that is significant enough to give you a claude/chatgpt vibe and be capable at all of reasoning the commands from voice would have required a data center to run. In fact I literally used his exact model as one of my many options and it was next to worthless for day to day tasks. The things he's describing like adding an event to your calendar with a model that small is like asking a toddler to do algebra.

And/or lots of RAM, and/or being OK with it being slow. Qwen has a mixture of experts A3B, so it’s 35 billion parameters but only 3 billion are active at a time. This makes it easier if you have weaker processing, but the whole thing still needs to be in RAM, and it helps to have something that can do the matrix multiplication really fast. The act of distillation isn't illegal, but it is against terms of service for most (all?) major AI shops. So he could still be sued, but it is unclear if they'd be able to do anything more than ban him from their service. If someone continuously signs up new accounts to circumvent the ban, then they can possibly sue for fraud.

He retired from gaming/most content a long time ago, lives in japan, has made some vlogs about his life and content about learning to draw manga and tech (specifically privacy)
Linux, local ai, degoogling, etc.

If you tell me 5 years ago that PewDiePie would get into AI development and advocate for open source AI I would assume that you're crazy but here we are. There are worse things to do when you're too rich for work at least

u/Codex_Dev 19d ago
I mean, he has a pretty good life trajectory after he quit streaming. He seriously got into software development in his free time and really enjoys it.

u/SpHoneybadger 19d ago
Makes sense you got free time and no pressure.
I would also enjoy development if it wasn't work related. Moving goal posts every Monday huddle.

Why is it okay for AI companies to steal content but not okay for other companies to steal the content they stole? Rhetorical question.

u/svenissimo 18d ago
The funny thing is “distillation” is basically him PAYING api costs to get answers to his prompts.
Frontiers complaining about someone paying to ask a question, giving the answer and then that party using that information to tune their model might be a breach of TOS but not on the same level to absorbing the entire efforts of artists and open source projects to put them out of business.

u/fadetoblackink 19d ago
I don’t think his AI model is particularly ground breaking or anything, but what’s cool about this is the attention it’s putting on local AI alternatives. The guy has an enormous platform of die hard fans, and over the last couple of years, he’s been putting a bigger spotlight on self hosting alternatives to Google and big tech. I think it’s a pretty great thing, personally.
We’ve got to get more people away from Google, Windows, OpenAI, and the like. And you need influencers like PewDiePie to do that.

This should be pinned and the thread locked. So many whining AI dorks saying 'this is easy, I do this all the time, anyone can just do this.' They need to realize that a vanishingly small amount of people know anything at all about AI beyond going to chatgpt.com, nonetheless huggingface. It's not the novelty of the project that's the interesting part, it's the novelty of having someone highly visible documenting their process of discovery and bringing awareness to how easy (or difficult) it might be, especially starting from zero. It's not like PDP is an AI engineer or is coming from a place of deep subject matter expertise

That's pretty much his YouTube channel now. He is getting very skilled in a big variety of activities. From drawing his own comic to software programming. He's also very anti big data hording companies, does so by using Linux, no more Google apps, stuff like that. This ai is probably just something he wanted for himself so he could use AI without feeding a giant corporation his data. (Haven't actually seen any video of his on the subject)

Dude, I have begrudging mad respect for Pewdiepie.
I hated his persona and antics during his heyday. But then I realized, this dude knows exactly what he's doing.
Sure enough the dude knew exactly when to cash out and leave and left behind the greatest turnkey operation where he just loops his youtube content on a streaming platform.
That dude soaked up his millions and now can just live life the way he wants to. It's enviable.

2017 era Pewdiepie is terrible, and it's the view a lot of people still have of him. But for sure since becoming a dad, he's become a lot more grounded. He's still his goofy self, but he isn't an edgelord anymore.

The sales pitch is very simple: decentralize from a couple of hyperscalers and let people run their own AI.
There’s no reason all your data should go to 5-6 private companies. It’s unexpected that Pewdiepie would be the one driving something like this, but he has all the chances to succeed.

Zero sympathy for a company that makes its entire living on stealing copyrighted data. Oh you got your data stolen? If you want him to be held accountible you have to be held accountible too.
Go ahead ban him all you want to, that's all you can do now, data theft isn't a real crime anymore, your continued existence is proof of that.

That's pretty much the life cycle for these online influencers. Remember when Ninja with the blue hair was the biggest thing on earth?

u/Spez_is-a-nazi 19d ago
Microsoft paid him a boatload to stream on their platform. Now the platform and the streamer are mostly forgotten.

u/Badtrainwreck 19d ago
I think it’s important to note, the decrease in wider media attention doesn’t mean these people fully disappear, the internet is so segmented you can still be incredibly successful and most people have never heard of you. Ninja and Pewdiepie still produce content, it’s just not being pushed like it use too. For Pewdiepie most likely his semi retirement the main reason and for Ninja, I like to think he lost his wider relevance because he is an asshole.

u/YourBlanket 19d ago
He made like 20-30 million and was able to go back to twitch in less than a year since Mixer shut down. Pretty much all the og fortnight players lost viewers. I don't even think he consistently streams anymore, he stopped a while ago.

u/moose_dad 19d ago

To be fair, he doesn't exist in public perception, because he is effectively retired. He just lives his best life, doing all kinds of side quests, like learning to draw, and making videos every now and then. Still - any random vlog is 2-3 mil views - so if he actually cared about being a youtuber, he would still be at the top.

I’m so suspicious of all the hate here when this is clearly a good thing. This contribution would be nothing but good after pandoras box has already been opened. If you don’t buy drugs online, do you hate the tor browser too? I bet you, every single person here has used AI at least once, even if that means against their will in a search browser or something. Yes AI bad, but let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
Hate the idea of contributing a huge datacenter to try AI? Run this at home and it’s the same energy you would use to game
Hate the idea of everything you do being logged? Run this at home and nothing has to leave your network
Hate the idea that AI could escape and do real world damage? Remove the internet connection and airgap it.
Hate that AI has no transparency? With it running on your own servers you have all the access to review its logs.
They’re stealing your privacy for “the greater good” and money. And we’re all letting it happen. I can’t believe there are so many people here really arguing against open source in this case. We’ve lost the plot

AI can be used for a lot of good just like most things. A knife can be used for a lot of good things and a lot of bad, depending on who use it, how it's regulated and so on. AI is not inherently bad, but it can be used especially by big corporations and tech companies for a lot of bad things.

I think there are a lot of people who see the word "AI" and just immediately assume it's terrible because so much of LLM work genuinely is terrible.
I've recently started seeing a pattern where people who talk about video games on the internet have to put in disclaimers when they discuss AI in video games because people are so reactive to the word "AI" even though the term has been used for NPC behaviour algorithms for basically ever.
Plus the reality is that LLMs aren't going to go away, and there are genuine use cases for them that aren't evil. Like, I'm sorry, but the reality is that my boss isn't evil for using an LLM to help him sift through his 700 emails, lol.

Why is this news? Aren't there a million AI models that you can download and run locally? Not that youd want to since most of them are extremely slow unless you have a 5090.

You can run models locally on your computer, and could do this, for free, for at least a year now. He's packaging something that you could ask any AI model how to do on your own, and it would show you a step by step tutorial.
3
u/ParticularCold9498 16d ago
The interesting part isn’t even the “uncensored” label, it’s that Ajax is meant to run locally.
A Qwen3.5 9B model handling browsing, email, and calendar tasks on your own hardware is pretty cool.
The privacy angle could be a huge reason people experiment with setups like this.
PewDiePie casually turning into an AI tinkerer was not on my bingo card.
