Software Rockstar boss says GTA 6 doesn't just let you easily walk around with guns because GTA 5's approach doesn't work "at this resolution" / GTA 6 needs better "behavioral sophistication" from its NPCs

This is how RDR2 is, if you pull out a firearm from your holster, NPCs will avoid you or not interact with you via storefronts and such. Same with wearing a mask / bandana. Sounds like GTA will be a more realistic version of that, where you may need to store your rifles in a duffel bag or something that you carry on your back when moving through populated areas.

u/MotherTrucker9 Sep 06 '26

You'll store weapons in your vehicles, same mechanics to your horse on RDR2.

577

u/r2d2rigo Sep 06 '26

So cars are just horses with wheels? Got it.

u/throwaway_ghast Sep 06 '26

Yeah but do cars have balls that grow and shrink in the weather? I thought not.

It's Florida...as a native, if they don't have truck nuts I'm refunding the game.

11

u/blade740 Sep 07 '26

As a CA native, they did a pretty good job capturing the vibe in 5. I'm curious how well they'll impress floridians with this one.

6

I really can't wait to see what they do with it! It's definitely a special place, both in good and bad ways lol

I don't think they'll go that far tbh. Having your horse be the main carrier of your guns in RDR made sense because that was mostly your only means of getting around and if your horse dies, there's not an abundance of horses you can just steal (you even have to get the trust of wild horses before you can make them your own).

GTA is different because cars are everywhere, so having one car with your guns wouldn't make much sense imo. I think they'll just keep the weapon wheel in GTA 5 (maybe alter it a little), and let you basically carry one weapon from each type (one handgun, one SMG, one melee etc.)

It might not be ultra-real, but it's GTA after all.

4

u/xflashbackxbrd Sep 06 '26

Sounds like they're going the rdr 2 route, 2 handguns, 2 long guns and you can change them at an owned car.

5

u/TrainDestroyer Sep 07 '26

Honestly I don't know how much I'm looking forward to that decision. I like that GTA5 at launch had a bunch of options for guns. Even if you didn't use them all, the options were nice to me, and I feel like the reduction in choice for guns is just gonna lead to people deciding that "If I can only bring two handguns and two long guns then I'll always bring this rifle and this pistol and a grenade launcher" Because if you only can take a few, why not take the best?

At least with 5 while you had the best, you could play with worse and swap back to the best if it wasn't working, but if you're locked into using what you bring, its gonna lead to people only ever bringing the best.

I hope not. Real GTA means you should be able to store a .50 cal sniper rifle and bazooka in your prison wallet

104

u/Tusker89 Sep 06 '26

I am genuinely conflicted on this. GTA has never pretended to be a simulator or realistic but at the same time, storing a bazooka in your prison wallet does break the immersion a little.

Maybe some middle ground where you can still carry a healthy amount of stuff but not everything?

124

u/Practical_Bread_3190 Sep 06 '26

Why are we treating GTA like some hyper realistic life sim? The game where you blow up 100 cop cars after robbing a jewelry store and then go chill with your friends the moment it's over?

When they talked about adding the fuel refilling mechanic to cars they mentioned making sure it's not such an impedance to the player so it seems they are aware of striking a balance between fun / realism for the player

96

u/Tweezot Sep 06 '26

There is literally NOTHING fun about having to get gas for your car in a video game. What’s next, you have to stop what you’re doing every hour to take a virtual piss?

39

u/round-earth-theory Sep 06 '26

My guess is that you'll never accidentally encounter it. You'd have to drive the same car for a few hours to run out of fuel. I'm thinking they subtly refuel your car on missions and make sure all NPC cars have a good baseline of fuel. So it's a mechanic for those that like using GTA as a life simulator but functionally non-existent for people who play the game as a regular game.

They may be aware of it, but that doesn’t mean their collective judgement is spot on. Eating and sleeping got old in red dead 2 pretty quick and while it’s my favorite game, I still felt that the survival mechanics became a chore. At least they were thematically relevant to the setting and story though… GTA sounds like it’s taking it further which I’m not looking forward to.

I’d like it if you could carry one weapon per weapon type. One pistol, one SMG, one rifle, one sniper, one shotgun, one launcher, one bomb. It gives you a big enough toolset without having to spend 15 seconds selecting the weapon you want.

GTA Online lets you remove weapons from your weapon wheel and this is how I played it, for the most part.

5

u/balkieb Sep 06 '26

Its been confirmed (by GTA Dev) that you can only carry 2 small weapon and 2 large weapon. The large weapon is shown on your back at all times while other has to be carried - while small weapon can be concealed. https://imgur.com/a/jv1ETaT

actual immersion would be to commit a murder, get away with it for a few days or weeks, but then the law using security cameras and witnesses to catch you.

It's also hilarious that the wanted level for shooting a shot in the air is the same as committing vehicular homicide. In reality vehicular homicide would be an instant 3 or 4 star.

If there's free copper I'm not telling a junkie about it. That's my copper. One time I came home from a job I was doing and the home owner tipped me with two 5 gallon buckets of scrap copper. My father was outraged on my behalf but I've been broke enough before to be a trash goblin. It was like $150 worth of copper.

I should have said scrap copper. Once I had broken out the torch I was able to save a lot of copper fittings. It was closer to $400 when I was done.

Kingdom Come Deliverance needed some kind of witness and they would tell a guard, which is what got you a wanted level. Being suspicious in the area even if you're not caught did this as well. Really cool, sophisticated system.

68

u/Ruddertail Sep 06 '26

Sometimes the "suspicious even if not caught" worked really well, like in small towns where visitors would be rare. But they do the same thing in Kuttenberg, where it's like, really, am I the only stranger in this entire city during a war? Nobody else suspicious at all?

u/Dave-C Sep 06 '26

100 million in wealth grants you a passive -1 star on all wanted levels. Once you hit 1 billion you get a -2 star and the police will be slow to arrive and lose interest in searching for you faster. If you can hit 100 billion in wealth the police show up to help you.

In reality vehicular homicide would be an instant 3 or 4 star.

Cyclist here, and I beg to differ.

It's often said that if you want to murder someone, run them down in your car and it will automatically get treated completely differently to any other form of homicide. Because there is an expectation that thousands of people get killed on the roads each year, there is a strong pre-supposition of "one more or less - whatever" across the whole system.

Anyway, slight digression...!

Nah, in GTA 6, shooting a shot in the air should trigger the cops in the city, and if you’re still in the area, try to stop you wanting to question you, since “ShotSpotters” exist now. They detect the sound of gunshots and trigger a police response.

And if you drove into the area, and later do the same thing multiple times, they can use the correlation between the shotspotters and flock cameras to try to arrest you.

Edit: Clarified my statement was in relation to the game.

It will be like this now, crimes need to be seen or caught on cctv. You wont get stars if you are completely off the grid or get rid of witnesses.

“The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law,” Nelson explains. “Our dispatch is extremely specific in what it knows.”

https://www.ign.com/articles/gta-6-wanted-system-explained

218

u/JaxMed Sep 06 '26

We'll see when it comes out. I think they said something similar about more realistic crime reporting for both GTA V and RDR2 and yet both games still released with supernaturally omniscient NPCs.

149

u/R97R Sep 06 '26

I remember always being frustrated by train robberies in RDR2, as they seemed like a really cool mechanic, but as soon as you stop one, even if it’s in the middle of nowhere, the driver is somehow able to telepathically transmit a distress call to the horde of heavily armed lawmen that just happen to be a minute away from the train at all times. Whatever bounty you might get from the robbery was usually a fair bit in excess of the money you could’ve made, and on top of that it’s not even really worth doing for fun because it just spawns the aforementioned horde of lawmen on top of you as soon as it starts.

61

u/CKRatKing Sep 06 '26

In GTA 6 if the cops get alerted they won't even necessarily know they are looking for you. You'll get a wanted level but the stars will be hollow indicating they are searching the area for the reported crime but don't know who they are looking for. Stars can also show up as red meaning they are looking for you but you've cleared all the indicators they had on you, like clothing, vehicle, weapons, etc.

30

u/Cl1mh4224rd Sep 06 '26

Stars can also show up as red meaning they are looking for you but you've cleared all the indicators they had on you, like clothing, vehicle, weapons, etc.

This part is incorrect. The red stars just mean that the police have lost sight of you, but you're still in their search area.

You can see this in the Extended Look, when they torch their getaway vehicle. The stars are red, but they still have several Heat indicators.

6

u/CKRatKing Sep 06 '26

Sounds like the information I got might have been wrong. My understanding is also that the area on the map will be red if the police are actively searching the area and that if your stars are red once you are out of that area they will clear.

u/Skepsis93 Sep 06 '26

It was pretty good in RDR2 I thought, but not perfect. If you were in the middle of nowhere you can get away with murder if there are no witnesses or you also kill/threaten the witnesses. The mask system was a good idea, you could escape identification sometimes. I think they also had a horse recognition mechanic, so even if you wore a mask you were sometimes identified by your horse. But still, sometimes you'd be identified for seemingly no reason.

My biggest gripe with both GTA V and RDR2 was how they spawned in officers. Once you get a big enough wanted level enemies just spawn on screen sometimes. If Rockstar fixes anything, please fix that bullshit.

22

u/Castun Sep 06 '26

My biggest gripe with both GTA V and RDR2 was how they spawned in officers.

The game would spawn in patrol cars directly in your path when you were trying to evade on foot or car. Even if you were out in the middle of the sea the game would spawn police helicopters in front of you. It was a maddening dance of gaming the stupid spawn mechanics to lose your wanted level.

A lot of games have claimed to do this, and I don't think any of them actually have. There's always some catch like "...but NPCs will just mysteriously appear to see you in the middle of nowhere" or "...but the police will surprise check you for evidence even though nobody saw you do it."

Let's see if Rockstar is the first to actually make the system work as described.

edit: "It’s a natural evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2’s bounty system brought into the modern world" doesn't make me very hopeful, that game was notorious for surprise wasteland NPCs appearing to witness you.

9

u/darthmase Sep 06 '26

The first Mafia game kinda did it, especially for the time it came out.

20

u/toomanyattempts Sep 06 '26

84

u/R97R Sep 06 '26

It’s an endless frustration that RDR2 put quite a lot of effort into its disguise system, but any NPC classed as a lawman just completely ignores it- they can see a fully-covered person out of the corner of their eye, and every single person in the state will instantly have the knowledge that said person is Arthur Morgan beamed into their head.

19

u/Niccin Sep 07 '26

I remember dressing up completely differently in a new outfit, including a mask that completely covered my head, stopped a train halfway along a bridge going over water, went to rob people on the train, and then a little speck of a lawman instantly appeared in the distance at the end of the bridge, used its telescopic x-ray vision to see through the train and Arthur's mask, identified him, and used his psychic powers to report to every other lawman in the country that Arthur Morgan was now wanted for robbery.

Honestly was super disappointing that with all of the crime-related activities that they left in such a broken wanted system and never fixed it.

8

u/TrainDestroyer Sep 07 '26

Its why I don't really have much faith in GTA6. Sure it could be good, but GTA5 had the problem of Animals reporting your crimes, and RDR2 had the lawmen just appear regardless. I don't know if it'll actually be improved or not.

5

u/WhatIsLoveMeDo Sep 07 '26

I remember the dudes at Gamestop telling me about the new wanted system in GTA V way back in the day. The staff were describing it as citizens pulling out their cell phones to take your picture, people calling 911, police creating a comprehensive plan to take you down and arrest you, your identity being put on the internet and following you, etc. Sounded like a goddamn spy thriller.

Then it turns out that you can go out to the desert, stab the ground with a knife, and the police not only know about the crime, but also have an immediate pinpoint on exactly where you are and spawn in 50 ft from you lol. I'm sure they've improved some things in GTA VI, but I'm not expecting magic no matter how much they hype the new wanted system.

27

u/Krauser686 Sep 06 '26

That was partially true. IIRC the GTA V wanted system relied on NPCs acting as witnesses to your crimes, meaning that you wouldn't get any stars if no one saw you. The reason why you could get a star while being in the middle of nowhere is because the animals were considered as valid witnesses in the game code. This was confirmed when the game finally released on PC and there were mods that fixed the wanted system by changing some lines of code lol.

In a new move for a series that has traditionally let players treat its world like a playground, GTA 6's NPCs will organically react to Lucia and Jason if they have their guns out. Rockstar North's joint boss and development lead Rob Nelson has explained the change was made because GTA 5's approach no longer works with 2026's tech.

As we saw briefly in the GTA 6: An Extended Look showcase, some of the world's inhabitants will walk away cautiously if they spot you with a handgun gripped tight. Police might even antagonize you for swinging a rifle around, too. It's a big change from past Rockstar open-worlds, GTA 5 included, which let you run about with a rocket launcher, no problem.

Speaking to TGG about why the change was made, Nelson gave quite a frank answer, explaining that the GTA 5 way might look jarring considering how believable the rest of GTA 6's world is. "We don't feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now," he says. "In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people and they don't react. That doesn't work here."

It's not just NPC reactions that are different. Gone are the days of Grand Theft Auto protagonists hiding military-grade weapons out of sight and in their pockets. "You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want," Nelson explains. "You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can't put both on your back. One goes in your off hand [and] one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that."

Nelson adds that "NPCs are more nuanced than before, so if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you've got one in your hand, people don't like it and they react and start moving away from you."

seems more Read Dead 2 than GTA V. RDR2 mechanics mixed with GTA V modernity. we already know theres a 'code' system where you're either a consummate professional criminal, or violent mad dog criminal on a sort of morality spectrum- like RDR2.

u/HenryDorsettCase47 Sep 06 '26

“I've known good criminals and bad cops, bad priests, honorable thieves. You can be on one side of the law or the other, but if you make a deal with somebody, you keep your word. You can go home today with your money and never do this again, but you took something that wasn't yours and you sold it for a profit. You're now a criminal. Good one, bad one, that’s up to you.”

I've noticed a weird habit that ppl online seem to forget that Rockstar made RDR2 since making GTA5. It's like because it was a different era/franchise, they don't count it for some reason. I'd expect a ton of gameplay systems to be more inspired by RDR2 than older GTA games, basically anything that could be fitting in modern times, I'd expect a lot of RDR2 DNA to be felt.

37

u/mtnchkn Sep 06 '26

And I think that’s everyone who played RDR2’s understanding too. Like instead of a horse saddle you’ve got a car trunk, etc. and yeah, you can’t point a gun at someone without everyone freaking out.

If they are going for realism the police should show up in 30 minutes or not at all

93

u/Redditor28371 Sep 06 '26

Response time should vary from 30 seconds to never depending on the neighborhood you commit the crime in.

79

u/Bonke_EB Sep 06 '26

That genuinely was a feature in Mafia 3. In the poor and/or black neighborhoods, the police would take much longer to respond and won't search very long or far and with little urgency. But commit a crime in the rich white neighborhoods and they are on your ass instantly.

37

u/Major_Higgins Sep 06 '26

That is some based game design.

6

u/kreyul504 Sep 07 '26

Mafia 3 was a very interesting experience, I enjoyed the features. Sadly there was jank getting in the way even soft locking game until save file is reloaded. Talking about Mafia, I have vague memories of Mafia 1 I think where police would get on your ass if you had a gun out.

9

They should make it dependent on the area they are responding to. Inner city poor? Never show up. Rich white neighborhood? Random black kid gets shot by the police for carrying a super soaker.

15

u/PtoS382 Sep 06 '26

People have to use in game voice chat to call in game 911 and clearly say which intersection they're at in order to get police to show up

yall have to realize that gta 6 is just red dead redemption set in modern miami. the gameplay and pacing is ripped straight from rdr

75

u/5u114 Sep 06 '26

Ya, that's what I was figuring too. Which is fine by me, and if Red Dead is going to set the precedent for their systems, that's also fine by me as it bodes well for Red Dead 3.

I think they mentioned that they have more simulations running. So walking with your guns out might be seen by people and police called. Or when you do shopping theft the police be called by witnesses. I guess more in line with RDR2 but probably more sophisticated. So yeah playing like in GTA5 would end you up with 4stars all the time.

u/AcanthaceaeCrazy1894 Sep 06 '26

572

u/bc_gamez Sep 06 '26

I think it means the NPCs will treat you differently as someone walking around with a gun instead of ignoring you.

119

u/Toutatous Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

I like that. Much more realistic (they should call the police) and it will make missions more challenging.

You'll probably have to wait until the last moment to draw your weapon.

GTA 5 was more arcadey and chaotic, with GTA 6 they’re focusing more on immersion and realism, walking around the city with an al-47 will likely not be as consequence free as it used to be, police and NPCs will respond accordingly

u/Sanquinity Sep 06 '26

Sooo...they make it sound very big, but aren't they just basically moving npc reacting to gunshots, to merely holding the gun? npcs in GTA5 react to aggressive actions too, just to a later part in the act...

151

u/deceitfulninja Sep 06 '26

You know, maybe I'm in the minority, but I think this series moving toward realism and away from absurdism is not in the best interest of fun. Remember when GTA had kill frenzies? (Later redubbed rampages).

I'm sure I'll enjoy it somewhat when it comes to PC in years but ever since GTA 4 I haven't liked how GTA started making the sandbox part of the game not fun and limited for the sake of "realism".

33

u/deceitfulninja Sep 06 '26

Yep, 4 is where it shifted. San Andreas was bonkers. Jetpacks and aliens and the like. 4 was a big step back in fun but with the graphics boost and all that conversation was overshadowed.

same, i found gta 4 a chore to play, and never even got through gtav, and that was a big part of it.

We don't need to go completely off the rails with the wacky like saints row, but I feel like there is a middle ground.

That or just make the sim elements an optional difficulty toggle, like the realism mode in fallout (which required you to periodically sleep, eat, drink, and go to a doctor for major injuries, rather than just healing through stuff)

Watch Dogs already did it in 2014.

When I first played the game and not familiar with the controls yet, I was unaware walking around with weapons out was taboo lol. NPCs flinched at the sight of the gun, ran away and even called the cops lol.

6

u/TrainDestroyer Sep 07 '26

Its actually something I liked about Watch Dogs. If you were a 'good Karma' player, NPCs would be less likely to call the cops just for you walking around with a gun out. Meanwhile if you were bad karma, they'd call the cops just if they knew who to look for

8

u/BlackAera Sep 07 '26

Seems like Rockstar is upping the immersion from RDR2 even higher. Can't wait to do my taxes and repair my lambo for a fortune.

45

u/Scrubscloset54 Sep 06 '26

Man, if i wanted this much realism, I'd go outside. Just let me do my dumb crime sandbox.

13

u/RecoveredAshes Sep 06 '26

Bro fr. Keeping up with food, sleep, money, and my relationship? I’m 30 I find that hard as is. Using my limited time on a video game where I have to manage the same chores feels like something that GTA 4 or 5 would have depicted as satire.

6

u/GenericNate Sep 06 '26

It would be awesome to be able to set different levels of law enforcement realism. "Arcade" for being able to run around with guns and ram cars out of your way with no issue, "Realistic" for not being able to brandish weapons, and having cops open investigations into you if witnesses or cameras spot you committing crimes.

There could be a separate set of options for how realistically traffic violations are enforced, and what's involved in removing wanted levels.

For super hardcore players, maybe if the cops manage to identify you, you have a permanent wanted level until you manage to find and kill or intimidate the relevant witness, or destroy evidence.

I'll be honest, realism is not something I'm looking for in a GTA game. If anything, I miss the GTA3/Vice City/San Andreas era that was cartoony and absurd.

I took it is more to do with the resolution of the simulation systems. As in NPC behavior and such are far more complex, the gun wielding is taken into account.

5

u/RMC1933 Sep 06 '26

They mean at this higher level of detail/realism in the game world. The original definition of resolution is separating the parts of something more complex. Still a weird way to describe it.

5

u/Serbian-American Sep 06 '26

Resolution is being used as a synonym for level of detail.

At this level of detail it would be jarring to pull an RPG out of your ass like in GTA 5. So instead, weapon models will be on your person if they are in your inventory, and people will react.

u/SlashNreap Sep 06 '26

My problem with realism is that realism doesn't automatically mean believable or better. There are unrealistic things that otherwise make sense for a universe.

In GTA IV, the story was relatively grounded. The tone was set, but yet Niko could walk around with an RPG and M4A1. The thing is, it's not entirely unbelievable, when you look at the wider GTA universe. People get away with a lot in that universe. And I mean a lot.

Another thing is, for example, I love motorcycles. But if I'm playing GTA, I don't want to have to worry about periodic oil changes on my Shitzu bike, but that sure as hell would be realistic lol

4

u/Ok_Buffalo_423 Sep 06 '26

As long as they dont keep swapping my weapons without my input like RDR2 Im sure Ill get used to it

5

u/No-Housing1669 Sep 06 '26

Just need a lot of interactive interiors. All these little immersion details are all well and good, but if the map is just a studio set rather than a city, those buildings might as well be cardboard cutouts.

3

u/AwkwardTickler Sep 06 '26

Will cops shoot kids for playing with toy guns though?

4

u/Baron_Light Sep 06 '26

GTA needs to have missions where you need to go cut down the flock cameras for rewards.
