New wiki on how to avoid accidentally encouraging suicide, and how to spot covert incitement

1.8k Upvotes

We've been seeing a worrying increase in pro-suicide content showing up here and, and also going unreported. This undermines our purpose here, so we wanted to highlight and clarify our guidelines about both direct and indirect incitement of suicide.

We've created a wiki that covers these issues. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who's wondering whether something's okay here and which responses to report. It explains in detail why any validation of suicidal intent, even an "innocent" message like "if you're 100% committed, I'll just wish you peace" is likely to increase people's pain, and why it's important to report even subtle pro-suicide comments. The full text of the wiki's current version is below, and it is maintained at /r/SuicideWatch/wiki/incitement.

We deeply appreciate everyone who gives responsive, empathetic, non-judgemental support to our OPs, and we particularly thank everyone who's already been reporting incitement in all forms.

Please report any post or comment that encourages suicide (or that breaks any of the other guidelines in the sidebar) to the moderators, either by clicking the "report" button or by sending us a modmail with a link. We deal with all guideline violations that are reported to us as soon as we can, but we can't read everything so community reports are essential. If you get a PM that breaks the guidelines, please report it both to the reddit sitewide admins and to us in modmail.

Thanks to all the great citizens of the community who help flag problem content and behaviour for us.

Summary

It's important to respect and understand people's experiences and emotions. It's never necessary, helpful, or kind to support suicidal intent. There are some common misconceptions (discussed below) about suicidal people and how to help them that can cause well-meaning people to inadvertently incite suicide. There are also people online who incite suicide on purpose, often while pretending to be sympathetic and helpful.

Validate Feelings and Experiences, Not Self-Destructive Intentions

We're here to offer support, not judgement. That means accepting, with the best understanding we can offer, whatever emotions people express. Suicidal people are suffering, and we're here to try to ease that by providing support and caring. The most reliable way we know to de-escalate someone at risk is to give them the experience of feeling understood. That means not judging whether they should be feeling the way they are, or telling them what to do or not do.

But there's an important line to draw here. There's a crucial difference between empathizing with feelings and responding non-judgmentally to suicidal thoughts, and in any way endorsing, encouraging, or validating suicidal intentions or hopeless beliefs. It's both possible and important to convey understanding and compassion for someone's suicidal thoughts without putting your finger on the scale of their decision.

Anything that condones suicide, even passively, encourages suicide. It isn't supportive and does not help. It also violates reddit's sitewide rules as well as our guidelines. Explicitly inciting suicide online is a criminal offense in most jurisdictions.

Do not treat any OP's post as meaning that will definitely die by suicide and can't change their minds or be helped. Anyone who's able to read the comments here still has a chance to choose whether or not to try to keep living, even if they've also been experiencing intense thoughts of suicide, made a suicide plan, or started carrying it out.

In the most useful empirical model we have, the desire to die by suicide primarily comes from two interpersonal factors; alienation and a sense of being a burden or having nothing to offer. These factors usually lead to a profound feeling of being unwelcome in the world.

So, any acceptance or reinforcement of suicidal intent, even something "innocent" like "I hope you find peace", is actually a form of covert shunning that validates a person's sense that they're unwelcome in the world. It will usually add to their pain even if kindly meant and gently worded.

How to Avoid Validating Suicidal Intent

Keep the following in mind when offering support to anyone at risk for suicide.

  • People who say they don't want help usually can feel better if they get support that doesn't invalidate their emotions. Unfortunately, many popular "good" responses are actually counterproductive. In particular, many friends and family tend to rely exclusively on trying to convince the suicidal person that "it's not so bad", and this is usually experienced as "I don't understand what you're going through and I'm not going to try". People who've had "help" that made them feel worse don't want any more of the same. It doesn't mean that someone who actually knows how to be supportive can't give them any comfort.

  • Most people who are suicidal want to end their pain, not their lives. It's almost never true that death is the only way to end these people's suffering. Of course there are exceptional situations, and we certainly acknowledge that, for some people, the right help can be difficult to find. But preventing someone's suicide doesn't mean prolonging their suffering if we do it by giving them real comfort and understanding.

  • An unfixable problem doesn't mean that a good life will never be possible. We don't have to fix or change anything to help someone feel better. It's important to keep in mind that the correlation between our outer circumstances and our inner experience is weaker and less direct than commonly assumed. For every kind of difficult life situation, you will find some people who lapse into suicidal despair, and others who cope amazingly well, and a whole spectrum in between. A key difference is how much inner resilience the person has at the time. This can depend on many personal and situational factors. But when there's not enough, interpersonal support can both compensate for its absence and help rebuild it. We go into more depth on the "it gets better" issue in this PSA Post which is always linked from our sidebar (community info on mobile) guidelines.

  • There are always more choices than brutally forcing someone to stay alive or passively letting them end their lives.

To avoid accidentally breaking the anti-incitement rule, don't say or try to imply that acting on suicidal thoughts is a good idea, or that someone can't turn back or is already dead. Do whatever you can to help them feel cared for and welcome, at least in this little corner of the world. Our talking tips offer more detailed guidance.

Look Out for Deliberate Incitement. It May Come in Disguise.

Often comments that subtly encourage suicidal intent actually come from suicide fetishists and voyeurs (unfortunately this is a real and disturbing phenomenon). People like this are out there and the anonymous nature of reddit makes us particularly attractive to them.

They will typically try to scratch their psychological "itch" by saying things that push people closer to the edge. They often do this by exploiting the myths that we debunked in the bullet points above. Specifically you might see people doing the following:

  • Encouraging the false belief that the only way suicidal people can end their pain is by dying. There are always more and better choices than "brutally forcing someone to stay alive" or helping (actively or passively) them to end their lives.

  • Creating an artificial and toxic sense of "solidarity" by linking their encouragement of suicide to empathy. They will represent themselves as the only one who really understand the suicidal person, while either directly or indirectly encouraging their self-loathing emotions and self-destructive impulses. Since most people in suicidal crisis are in desperate need to empathy and understanding, this is a particularly dangerous form of manipulation.

Many suicide inciters are adept at putting a benevolent spin on their activities while actually luring people away from sources of real help. A couple of key points to keep in mind:

  • Skilled suicide intervention -- peer or professional -- is based on empathic responsiveness to the person's feelings that reduces their suffering in the moment. Contrary to pop-culture myths, it does not involve persuasion ("Don't do it!"), cheerleading ("You've got this!") or meaningless false promises ("Trust me, it gets better!"), or invalidation ("Let me show you how things aren't as bad as you think!"). Anyone who leads others to expect these kinds of toxic responses, or any other response that prolongs their pain, from expert help may be covertly pro-suicide. (Of course, people sometimes do have bad experience when seeking mental-health treatment, and it's fine to vent about those, but processing our own disappointment and frustration is entirely different from trying to destroy someone else's hope of getting help.)

  • Choices made by competent responders are always informed by the understanding that breaching someone's trust is traumatic and must be avoided if possible. Any kind of involuntary intervention is an extremely unlikely outcome when someone consults a clinician or calls a hotline. (Confidentiality is addressed in more detail in our Hotlines FAQ wiki). The goal is always to provide all help with the client's full knowledge and informed consent. We know that no individual or system is perfect. Mistakes that lead to bad experiences do sometimes happen to vulnerable people, and we have enormous sympathy for them. But anyone who suggests that this is the norm might be trying to scare people away from the help they need.

Please let us know discreetly if you see anyone exhibiting these or similar behaviours. We don't recommend trying to engage with them directly.

Please remember that NO ACTIVISM of any kind is ever allowed here. No matter what day it is.

Activism, i.e. advocating or fundraising for social change or raising awareness of social issues (and suicide is, inescapably, a social issue) is absolutely against the rules here at all times.

Please understand that we're all for smart, strategic mental-health and suicide-prevention activism. It's essential to fight against stigma, misinformation, and discrimination, and to fight for research, treatment, accommodation, acceptance, and understanding. Most of us, one way or another, are mental-health activists IRL.

But activism just doesn't work in a dedicated support space that serves a vulnerable population. We used to allow it but the evidence that it was undermining our primary purpose became overwhelming. We do regret the need for this rule, but the need is inescapable.

Our population is all too well aware of the issues and causes that need support and largely not in a position to take action, so besides the fact that activism is often salt in our community's wounds, it's a waste of the activists' time.

tl;dr Any fundraising, awareness raising, petitions, calls for participation, or any post that's about any cause or issue (rather than a request for personal support) is not allowed here. Please report everything of the nature that you see.

Being a women is hell

I fucking hate being a woman
99% with my problems is because of my gender!

Why do people hate womens so much?
Why do MEN hate us that much?
Why do they want to take everything from us?
Why don’t you want me to live happy just like you? Why would they create religions that harm womens? Why all of the religions harmful to womens?
Why is everything against women?
Why do they treat us this way?
Why why why why why ?!!!

It makes me angry every single day, to the point where I want to take my own life.

Why we must fight for basic rights that men possess from the very moment they are in their mothers' wombs???

Didn’t fucking chose to be a woman I didn’t fucking choose to have a vagina that hurts me every fucking month I didn’t choose anything Even from a biological standpoint our bodies cause us to suffer nothing ever works for us! My body hurt me every fucking day just because I’m a woman and they don’t treat me right just because I’m a woman nobody cares nobody really think I’m in pain they just think I’m overreacting
Why the fuck are they like that? What did we fucking do? Why are people keep getting kids knowing that they might be a girl and suffer just like them and like any other woman in the world!! I’m so fucking mad about everything I hate all men All of them even the babies when I know it’s a male I just can’t stand looking at it or helping it I don’t even care about it ! that’s how much I hate them so fucking much ughhhh

I did not consent to this.

I don't remember signing anything or consenting to anything and yet I'm thrown into an eat or be eaten world. If I could at least be provided basic necessities like some fucking 5x5 meter room with a water supply, food and a bed and live in it alone away from people, but I'm not. I'm supposed to work, struggle and compete to survive. What If I don't want to? Worse - what If I can't? I guess I'm just gonna starve on the streets or die of an infection. And I can't even safely check out, because all the best methods of leaving this world were made illegal. I can't just walk into a drugstore and buy like 15 grams of pentobarbital and peacefully drift off into sleep. I have to actually risk maiming my body and possibly ending up in an even worse situation. I'm not given any means to survive and I'm not given any means to leave peacefully.

This isn't funny anymore. It stopped being funny a good while ago. I know that this is nothing new, this is basic shit, you have read some iteration of this post hundreds of times before, but this is the truth. The truth is simple and does not need to be analyzed and dissected into smaller parts anymore. This post IS THE TRUTH.

And then I'm just being told to pull myself by the bootstraps. What a joke. But like I said, it's not funny anymore.

And there's no limit to the suffering you can experience. It can be a simple heartbreak or you can be tortured for days or weeks by a drug cartel in some 3rd world country. It can always get worse. Always.

Rumors and videos of me having sex while too drunk to consent spreading around school. I don't think I can ever cope.

I really don't know what to do right now and I seriously consider to just end it tonight. I just don't see how I can ever cope with what happened.

It started with a fight between my boyfriend and I during a party at a friend's house. He left and I took the bad decision to stay and have a few drinks.

I really liked the attention of some of the older guys and although I knew it's wrong, I did some flirting. This became more and more intense over time but I honestly didn't really thought about it.

It feels like someone else took control over my actions after that and I went further and further with them. I don't know why! I participated in a drinking and stripping game in front of all these people and didn't even stop there.

When I look back, I feel like I am looking at someone else. I let it become sexual and ended up having sex. I have literally no idea why I was into this at this moment!

The real horror started the next day. I woke up with a hangover and pain in my body. It took me a while to realize what had happened and shortly afterwards I received the first text from a friend. The rumors spread around very fast and there were even videos of it.

I don't think I can ever recover from this!

Thank you for reading this

I smoke weed so I don't kill myself.

I don’t know who is reading this, but I’d be interested to hear your take on people who cut themselves and smoke weed just to keep from killing themselves. Personally, I think about suicide every single day—and I’m just so tired of it; every day and every night, I feel the urge to end it all.

I got only one life and it's this.

I just can't fathom this.

I got born into this world, given exactly one chance at life, and it turned out to be full of pain and suffering and disappointment. How is that fair?

This feels like a sick joke. I didn't choose my parents, I didn't choose the environment I was brought into, I didn't choose my genes and looks, I didn't choose the bad things that happened to me since I was a kid. I didn't choose any of that, and you're telling me this is it? I get no other life but this one? So it's just all randomized and up to luck? And I just ended up on the losing side? This is ridiculous.

What pains me is that the era I was born in is probably one of the best, if not then best, to be alive as a human. It's however pointless if one is born with shitty genes, shitty mental health, shitty environment, shitty parents...etc.

Why? I feel like I was born to see how the lucky are enjoying their lives while I suffer in silence. I hate how this world is cruel and unfair. I hate how some of us don't get to have a good life just because of luck.

For us to exist, and to experience all this pain and suffering and then just die, is this really all there is to it for some of us? So why are we brought to this world then? If I'm not going to experience the joy of life, then what's the point of me being here? To cry myself to sleep every night? To wake up so sick and feeling like throwing up every morning? To live with a body and brain that are both riddled with health issues since I was a kid? To live without experiencing love? To live isolated in my room and die alone? So I'm just here to suffer and then die?

I feel like I'm losing my sanity. I just can't believe this reality, and I cannot bring myself to accept it. I'm sick of this life, so sick of it. I hate my luck. I hate that I and many others are suffering just because of bad luck. I hate how this whole thing works. It's rigged. This life is rigged. It's not fair nor just, and I hate it.

If it wasn’t for my dogs and cats I wouldn’t even be here.

They are the only reason to be alive. I’m a 42-year-old male. I have two cats and four dogs live by myself and have no one to talk to. Just a thought of even one of them having to be rehomed makes me stay here. Which makes me feel trapped because I am so unhappy. I’ve been in therapy off and on since I was 10 or so. I’ve been on medication and nothing helps. I just wanted to die my entire life. I just wanna go back to that feeling of sleeping but not dreaming. That is what I think death feels like. I think death feels like the exact same feeling like before you were born, which is nothing because you do not remember anything

I am ready

When I was sixteen, I googled “ways to commit suicide,” and a page came up listing painless ways to do it. That was the first time I attempted suicide, by swallowing all the pills in our house. Nothing came of it except a quick trip to the emergency room.

My parents didn't care at all. They didn't believe I was depressed or acknowledge that I was suicidal, so I had to go through my school to get on antidepressants. I quit taking them a month later.

The second time I tried was when I was twenty-two. It was an extremely intense episode, and I cut myself vertically, trying to cause as much damage as possible. But I didn't stop there. I went out to my car in the middle of the night, when the streets were empty, and drove recklessly at 200 km/h while drunk. I almost flipped my car and crashed multiple times. For whatever reason, I eventually stopped, called a suicide hotline, and was taken away by an ambulance. Once again, I was put on antidepressants, but I stopped taking them after three weeks.

Now I'm twenty-five, and I feel like I'm at the lowest point of my life. I keep putting myself in increasingly worse situations and making my life harder for no apparent reason. I fucked up my relationship, tried to get back together, and now that we're together again, I want out. I don't want to finish my degree because unemployment feels inevitable. I have no friends, or at least no truly close ones. I constantly feel like I'm everyone's third or last choice, including my parents', who don't seem to like me anymore because of my sexuality.

I'm so tired of feeling this broken and empty. For weeks, I've been thinking about just ending it for real this time. But before that, I want to enjoy life for a little while. After that, I'll decide how and when to do it, unless I end up acting impulsively and doing it before then.

I have nothing to look forward to, and it just feels easier to end it all.

My mum committed suicide and I'm 22. I tried to commit suicide 3 days ago.

I honestly couldn't think of a life without my mother. She hung herself with my dressing gown and a photo of me in her pocket. I live with my boyfriend now. I don't work. I stay at home all day alone and think about how my mum was hanging for 10 hours until someone found her. I slept in the same bed as her for 16 years because I was sexually assaulted when I was 12.

Getting closer every day

I'm 16F. I feel like I'm getting closer to committing every day. I only have 2 friends and they barely talk to me. I'm butt ugly and it can't be fixed cause it's just poor bone structure. No boy likes me and I've never dated anyone. I go to every dance alone and I know prom will suck and I will cry so much because it's always been my dream ever since I was little to have an amazing prom and I know I won't be able to. I'm so tired and school drains me. I have nothing to look forward to and I know it won't get better. It'll just be a lifetime of taxes, bills, and a boring job for the rest of my life. I see no point to it anymore. I will soon be forgotten anyways.

No matter what I do or say in life it’s wrong, I’m stuck in a forever loop of rage and depression anyway. My parents don’t acknowledge me anymore, my little brother who I’ve protected for years finally is bigger than me and torments me. I get screamed at bc I do not have a job as of right now even though I apply and have interviews nonstop but when my brother was unemployed for almost 2 yrs said nothing. I wasn’t wanted I never was. My so called friends haven’t even messaged me in weeks if I don’t message first, all they wanted me for at the time was how much I made bc I made a huge figure more than them and used to love gifting. I don’t wanna be stopped I just want this to be known as why I did it. I have found easy ways it’s just the fact of I have 1 little cat who wouldn’t understand where I went who only super adores me…

Carbon Monoxide: Sweet Death

I hate this world full of nonsense.
Working for dying and dying for working.
Surviving due to your addictions from this modern society (chronically watching online videos, partying, porn, drugs, video games, egoism).
Losing your natural principles.

I’m young but I’m dead. I’m ugly and I know why (that’s the worse), I cannot properly breath through my nose cause I’m always full of snot, my tongue placement is inappropriate (mouth breather through my entire childhood), I’ve had braces to get a beautiful smile but they lied to me cause it didn’t work, I got my teeth aligned but it doesn’t mean my jaw is fixed (the root cause), so my smile won’t be beautiful. My chin hurts, I’ve been wearing fixed retainers for 7 years and I think that the pressure on my mouth from them it’s starting to make it self felt now. My body posture it’s horrible and it hurts. Relationship with my family is fucking useless, stupid and horrible. They are monkey thinkers, they just see one wall, not even the box.
Being an overthinker all my life, feeling like hell right now. I hate this people that say: “Being an overthinker (I also mean being an introvert, neurodivergent too) is beautiful, you see things differently”. And they are so stupid cause they don’t know what is that, yet they describe it like it’s some special divine thing from nature. I also look low test cause I’ve been eating pretty bad (playing video games too, even though I do a lot of sport but anyways) since I was born and the moment I realised that to fixed it, would be too late. So my dimorphism is almost null.
I didn’t attract anyone that I also like. Socially awkward btw.
I felt in love for my first time a year ago and that person is no longer in my life and the way it went out is so traumatic.
Nothing emotional on my entire life (because I didn’t feel it) but this emotional thing back then, and I know that feeling will not come back ever again, at least not the same way because it was unintentional and that’s so beautiful.
I also hate this type of people that say: “Life is amazing (so diverse), you’ll meet a lot of great people, etc”. NO!!! I DIDN’T WANT THAT, NEVER DID NEVER WILL. I didn’t met people by approaching them and being intentional about it. I want that girl cause that’s the girl I felt in love with, and that’s very special. I would protect her at all costs.
I’m also a virgin, 21, first kiss with that girl at 20 (no one knows that besides me).
I realised that I’ve been with chronic depression since I was 13 years old. Now I’m with severe depression ofc. Fucking hate studying, hate what I’m doing and my parents don’t want me to quit even though I tell them what I feel about it (I know If do something else I will hate it anyways cause this the rat race).
I’m tired.
My psychologist told me that maybe there’s something that made my life worth living and I kinda argued something like this, just on a few sentences but similar. He didn’t reply cause there’s no solution. Maybe I’m too young, but I feel like a grandpa. Last shit was told by my dad, however it’s true. There’s nothing to be done. That’s it. There’s is nothing worth living. I’m done. I just can’t anymore. There is no rational answer on my case to think that this hell is still worth living. Sorry but I didn’t find any of that. Closer and closer for killing myself and I know damn well how exactly I’ll do it. Till that day arrives… (not much longer).

I can’t keep living like this

Everywhere I try to post censors and erases my post. The few people I know all ignore my cries for help. I can’t go to a therapist because it doesn’t work, I can’t talk, I can’t even go. When I went, I had been on 4 different medications, but none of them worked, 2 of them made me extremely and abnormally suicidal for almost 2 years, and the others just made me feel grumpy, fatigued, and dead, but still nervous on all of them no matter what. I can’t go outside by myself, I have no friends. I only go work and I’m trapped in my house. Every time I have tried to go outside, I have panic attacks and I lose myself and my self control. I can’t go anywhere. I have no support, I have no resources. I can’t drive except to go to work and 1 store. I think about committing it everyday. I waste every day. When I die, the last thing I’m going to think of is how I wasted every single day of my life trapped inside doing nothing and lost my entire life to anxiety. This isn’t a life at all. I know I have Asperger’s and OCD. My entire life. I’ve been trapped alone in my apartment for 7 years and I feel like I’m just abandoned in the middle of an empty void left to drown. My struggling won’t be serious to anybody until I end up dead. Every one thinks I’m a lost cause, they just leave me to rot by myself alone.

I hope every nurse who made me feel like shit is happy

to cut a long story short, a nurse was horribly rude to me at my clinical experience for university, spread sexually salacious rumors about me, and now I’m in trouble with my university because I stepped outside for 5 minutes to get air while I was having a panic attack and that’s a patient safety issue despite me not having a patient load at all.

and my instructor told me they’re likely going to report me to the board for it.

oh. and they won’t let me move floors. for the next two months, I am stuck with people who hate me, judge me, don’t trust me to practice skills, and who are likely going to give me a horrible evaluation which is going to impact my ability to graduate anyway.

I’m in my last semester and, honestly, I feel like I am going to make a terrible nurse because my physical skills aren’t up to par so there isn’t any use in trying anymore anyway. at least that’s what everyone tells me.

I hope they’re happy. They got what they wanted and I’m going away. Just probably more permanently than they expected.
