Recommend me a book on different marriage traditions

• Upvotes

I picked up the book "How to Be Married: What I Learned from Real Women on Five Continents about Building a Happy Marriage" by Jo Piazza a few years ago and it's always stuck with me. I liked that they looked at what marriage looked like at different parts of the world and in other cultures while reflecting on the author's own marriage and relationships.

Are there any other books out there like this?

Romantasy Cozy Funny Romance

I'm a big fan of rom coms, but have yet to read anything similar.

I'm looking for a book that provides that same warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feeling you get when you watch things like You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, or While You Were Sleeping.

Nothing too scintillating please.

Spooky Season Books with male main character that becomes a monster/monster-like?

I'm a new reader and I'm very happy to be back on my reading journey! I've recently picked the book Skyhunter. I'm in the middle of it and I'm really enjoying it!

There's just one thing I was a bit disappointed tho (mild spoilers): the male love interest is an experiment, a weapon of war, and the results of the gruesome experiments are... He got cool metal wings lol

I enjoy stories where the character goes through some sort of transformation and becomes a creature. Can be merperson even, anything except vampire or werewolf. However I don't enjoy when the character loses consciousness when they become a monster. It's much more interesting when they have to deal with inner humanity but outer monstrosity.

Do you guys know any books that tackle similar subjects? I do prefer when there's a female protagonist and the other main character that goes through the transformation is male, either a love interest or friend to the protagonist.

I also prefer women authors.

I'm very picky, so I'm gonna list a few things that are no-gos for me in a book:

  • enemies to lovers

  • love triangle

  • toxic couple

  • dominating male lead

  • miscommunication

  • smut

  • zombies (zombie-adjacent is fine)

  • asshole female protagonist

  • romantasy slop

  • abusive couple dynamics that are romanticized

  • when romance is the main plot

  • downer/pessimistic/nihilistic plot

Any help would be appreciated! Tbh idk if the book I'm looking for actually exists haha

Can be YA, New Adult or Adult books.

Looking for books similar to One Dark Window/Two Twisted Crowns. I loved the magic system and the gothic vibes but I don’t like horror or scary supernatural. I’ve also just finished The Knight and the Moth/The Knave and the Moon.

Novellas (under 100, 150, 200 pages, etc.) Short chapters, sci-fi, mystery, etc

I’ve recently picked up reading again as I’ve had time between stuff at work, but I need shorter chapters so I can set it down and not feel lost in the middle of a long chapter.

I read Pierre Boulle’s Planet of the Apes. It was easy to get into as I love the films based on it. That was my gateway. I then read An Elderly Lady is up to No Good. I liked the short chapters and the character a lot. Again, easy to pick up for a few minutes at a time.

I just started The Shark House. A coworker recommended it. I’m liking it so far, story wise, but there’s a lot of fluff. I liked how the first two didn’t bother with insignificant details like the color of someone’s eyes in the light or the way the house looked at night.

I’ve got another book on my shelf called I Am A Cat by Natsume Soseki. I liked his other book, Kokoro, in college. But this one was too daunting to get into haha as it’s like 400 pages.

I looked up some other threads on here for short chapters but none of the books also matched my interests. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Horror Weird Existential horror about things I didn't know to be afraid of

I realised that I love thinking about the implications of certain tropes that get glossed over and used for horror purposes. Absolutely adore "Flowers for Algernon" and how, by putting it in first person, you experience the tragic horror of slowly losing your intelligence and being powerless to do anything. Something else that I really enjoy is body swap being used for horror. Complete identity horror of losing who you are. "Sibs" by f. paul wilson and "Apastoral: A Mistopia" by Lee D. Thompson both mess with your sense of self and your personal identity as something that can be taken away and used in horrific ways. Follow delving into the idea of "someone else is me right now" or "I don't know how much of what I am thinking is my own thoughts."

Obviously there's lovecraft and stuff like "What if the colour spectrum was evil?" or "What if me being racist about this town of weirdos was correct?"

I know I mentioned examples of psychological horror, but I'm open to have any type of tropes subverted or recontextualised for horror purposes or just recontextualising something to talk about the implications of something

Trigger Warning Book Community Grief SOS

I unexpectedly lost my beloved cat today. I do not have the words to explain how deeply I am hurting other than sending out this plea. I could use any and all book recommendations to help keep my mind busy while I slowly process this loss. I’m not looking for any specific genre, just something that grabbed you from the beginning. I am gutted but safe. Just so so sad.

Non-fiction Non-fiction where learning is exciting

Hi gang! I recently finished "Everything is Tuberculosis", "Salt", and "Outlaw Ocean" and I want more. Books that take a specific or small topic and teach a part of the world or history in a way that I absolutely devour. I love learning things about this great big, beautiful, complex world we live in. Thank you!

Very inhuman AI characters, sentient machines

I would love any novels/short stories that have an AI character described in a way that makes it clear it's not human. A fundamentally different, electronic species, not even made of the same elements as other living beings. I want it to feel and think in alien machine ways that are noticeable and reflected in the writing.

Hoping mostly for AI without a humanoid robot body, but I'm interested in any machine beings.

I'm open to any suggestions! Other kinds of media too.

I'm looking for a specific kind of enemies-to-lovers dynamic.

I'm looking for a very specific take on the enemies-to-lovers formula. It doesn't have to be the main plot, but it should have an important role.

I find that in most enemies-to-lovers dynamics the characters aren't really enemies, they usually are more like rivals. Either that, or the enemy phase is just too short. I want something where they actually really dislike each other at first and take a very long time to start getting closer.

I also love when the endgame romance is not obvious at all. Naturally by asking for an enemies-to-lovers I kinda spoil myself in that way, but still, if the switch came as a surprise for someone not in the know, that's what I'm looking for.

Male MC and female MC are both ok.

As for the genre, I prefer fantasy or mystery (mix of both is fine too), but I'm open to any as long as it fits the criteria and it sounds interesting. Just no vampires or werewolves.

Happy ending for the romance strongly encouraged.

Gift for friend/family/etc. Looking for non-fiction history/exploration books to gift to my father for Christmas.

Like the title says, I'm looking for recommendations on non-fiction books to gift to my father for Christmas. I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, so I'm a little out of my depth.

He specifically asked for books related to "history, exploration, etc."

I'm planning on getting him Names on the Land by George R. Stewart, which I think will be right up his alley. Recommendations similar to this, if you've read it would be appreciated.

I know he's read The Longest Ride: My Ten-Year 500,000 Mile Motorcycle Journey by Emilio Scotto multiple times and loved it (it's abnormal for him to read a book more than once).

He's interested in tour motorcycling, Pennsylvanian history (specifically the northern PA wilds or Lancaster County), outdoorsmanship, Americana road tripping, and geocaching.

We are exchanging gifts at Thanksgiving, so I don't have a ton of time to figure out what to get him. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Spooky Season horror lite for a beginner!

i decided i want to get into the horror genre this spooky season but i’m kind of a wimp when it comes to horror. i don’t watch hardly any horror movies. i’m almost done with a house with good bones by t. kingfisher and i’ve loved it so far- not super scary, comedic relief, and other interesting themes (love the bugs). looking for similar recs! i like the idea of horror with comedy or romance, something to lighten the mood lol. i read she haunts me still by de elizabeth earlier this month and did hate it; i liked the premise but i thought it was very poorly written. i would prefer paranormal vibes and nothing too gory. thanks!

edit: i realized it looks like i misspelled lit as in literature in the title, i meant lite as in lite beer lol

Looking for a physical copy UK specific Survival book (non fiction)

Can you recommend any UK survival books to keep handy if everything goes to shit? For a situation when Googling what you can eat in the woods is no longer a possibility.

I'm not a prepper or anything like that but it just occurred to me that, say in the event of some catastrophic war or societal collapse, I wouldn't have any idea what to do and it would be nice to have some wisdom to refer to when there's no power or signal to check the internet.

Ray mears books are old but probably still relevant, otherwise the market seems to have been infiltrated by a lot of AI slop, which I would rather avoid given AI is one of the many candidates for causing collapse in the first place. Thanks!

Trigger Warning Er*tic horror recommendations for therapy self-healing? NSFW

I have some very horrific se/ual trauma, which i probably cannot put on reddit as I'll likely get banned.. but I've started to read er/tic horror books as a sort of exposure therapy, I'm also watching films that was literally my life for numerous years till I got free (hostel, skin, I spit on your grave, sl/ughtered v/mit dolls.. to give you an idea 🫠) I've also played cyberpunk 2077 and Evelyn's storyline was very close to my life, but with more cool tech and better clothes ovbs haha.

So I'm looking for books that are not really a romance but more f/ck t/rture m//der kinda thing, or female that takes a g/ry revenge. I have a kindle but I also like getting hardback books so either format is fine with me :)

If it's f//ish/k/nk related, pleaassseeee can it be written by someone who understands what that lifestyle is actually like 😅😆

It's helping me deal with my memories in a more controlled manner as I am starting to draw and paint my emotions or images that are snapshots of what i can remember when I am able to semi regulate an episode.

My goal set by my psychiatrist is to write a book review on 3 scenes and 3 characters that represent my trauma, one of the bad people and a moment of character that reflects my actions in a situation that happened. Comparing fiction to reality, i think their goal is for me to feel proud for surviving, like a hero final girl or to feel brave for still being here but idk, they throw a curveball at me like every session 😆

Sorry if this brought the mood down, i know it seems silly but I'm really proud of the changes I've made in myself and how far I've come from the 'meat market' to now rebuilding my soul :)

Thank youu 🖤

Any genre! looking for books about possession/body swapping (horror/thriller/etc.)

Hi all!
Im doing some research for a story Im writing and want some recommendations for books with topics like dual personality or split personalities, body swapping, possession, etc.

Im open to any genre although Im pretty sure most of these will live within horror or thriller, but Id be just as happy reading a non-fiction as well if it can give psychology insight.

Im currently reading The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde which Im really enjoying. Anything similar would get a big thumbs up from me.

Thanks!
