Storytime FINAL UPDATE: The Steam Deck that was lost on a train is on its way home!

I'm the one who posted searching for the owner of a Steam Deck my mother-in-law found on a train eight months ago but didn't give it to me until two weeks ago... and I found the owner! It's u/Fine-Log5358! Huge thanks to u/f0rged who led me to finding this post, and even huger thanks to u/SteamHWFeedback who helped connect me with the owner who didn't originally see my messages. And thanks really to everyone who saw my post, upvoted it, commented, shared, etc., because ultimately it led to the right people seeing it.

It took a little bit of effort but it feels amazingly good to have helped get this baby home. According to the tracking info, it should arrive by tomorrow night! I hope u/Fine-Log5358 lets us know when it does!

And to everyone reading.. if you get the opportunity to do a good deed for someone, please do. If everyone does the selfish thing every time, then the world just sucks. Everyone has the ability to be better than that. And it feels really good to do it.

EDIT: I have to take a minute to shout out /u/chriszorn who kindly gifted me a game on steam (that I was really wanting!) just from having seen this post! What comes around goes around and there's some kindness coming your way in the near future too Chris, I'm sure!!! Thank you!

My Steam Deck saying goodbye to her cousin who visited for a couple of weeks!
Getting ready to pack this li'l guy up in a random Uline hand soap box!
At the UPS Store and on his way home!

Storytime I miss when my Deck was just a silly games machine

• Upvotes

Came back to school with e-learning after 2 year of FAILURE in the job market (how tf am I suposed to get the experience that everybody ask for if nobody fucking hires me first) and I'm using the deck as a desktop

Today when I sat down to do some work I thought "wow I've really been using the deck lately" and then I realized... I've used it everyday in the past week and only one time was for gaming...

For someone who hasn't had a desktop pc since I was like 10 and only game in consoles, studying in the same device I used to game has been a bit weird 😅😂😂😂

Anyway, studying in the deck is very confortable but God I miss the free time and I wanted to complain a little 😂😂😂

Storytime I'm so thankful to my Steam Deck for opening up gaming to me.

I'm someone that's never really considered myself much of a gamer. The extent of my experience for most of my life was Pokemon and Zelda. The first console I ever owned myself was the Gamecube and I put countless hours into Windwaker, Mario Sunshine, and the couple of other games I had.

The main systems I had access to as a kid were the NES (at my grandma's house) and the SNES my brother gave to me. The term "Nintendo hard" exists for a reason from that era. We're talking games like Paper Boy, Mario Bros 1-3, Excitebike, Super Mario World, Megaman X.

These are games that are, by and large, reaction based and require very quick timing. I'm Autistic which means I can struggle with timing and finer motor control. I technically had access to a PS1 and PS2, but my brother wouldn't let me play them.

So I just replayed the same handful of Pokemon and Zelda games ad nauseum.

Cue around 2012 when I meet my now-best friend via Tumblr. He's much more of a gamer and has helped open my eyes to see the types of games I enjoy which are mostly cozy games and JRPGs. This was a long process over quite a few years that culminated in him suggesting I get a Steam Deck.

Ever since I got my Steam Deck, I've gotten a lot more games and have a library of nearly 80 games now (I know that, by Steam gamer standards, that's small potatoes, but it's more game than I've ever owned before.) Mostly indie cozy games but with some RPGs in there like Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 and BG3.

Legitimately, I've never been able to play so many games that I enjoy before.

I thought I hated gaming most of my life because I didn't know my preferences. I didn't have access to the types of games I do enjoy. Because of one really amazing friend, I've managed to become the sort of gamer my younger self could only imagine.

And I know a lot of people don't consider cozy games to be "real gaming" but I do consider myself a "casual" gamer due to my preference in genres. I just like being able to take my time and think things through before acting. I'm a very methodical, meticulous person. You should see how I do my research for writing! I've even made my own language and build my own cultures from more or less scratch.

I do still have my Switch 2 for Nintendo-exclusive games, of course. I still need to get deeper into Fortune's Weave. (I'm a filthy Casual Normal enjoyer.) But really, my Steam Deck is my main gaming device.

PSA / Advice PSA: PSA: Stalker Anomaly: Escape from Pripyat works great on Steam Deck

I've been trying to play Stalker Gamma on the deck and can't get it working satisfactorily with good settings, it constantly runs out of VRAM. However, the other Anomaly-based modpack, Stalker Escape from Pripyat works really well, sitting mid 40s for the framerate, on DX10 with most shaders. It looks beautiful, and is easy to install thanks to the Lutris script.

If you've struggled with gamma like me, I would really suggest giving this a go.

Promotional Wifi Optimizer - Major and Minor Updates Galore, Decky > 3.3.0 fixed

What this is: Makes game streaming not suck. A decky plugin that automates a number of wifi optimizations for the Steam Deck to greatly improve game streaming performance (Moonlight, Chiaki, GeforceNow, Steam, etc..). All optimizations detailed in README and in the plugin. This is just a major update post. All plugin details can be read about here: https://github.com/ArcadaLabs-Jason/WifiOptimizer

Hello, I haven't posted in quite a while but have added a ton of new functionality and stability enhancements, many that were requests from my last post. The plugin is now better than ever and largely resolves all non-I-just-have-terrible-wifi streaming issues. It does make terrible wifi better as well, but that's never gonna be 100%.

New stuff

  • WiFi backend toggle: switch between iwd and wpa_supplicant right from Game Mode. Helps a lot of OLED owners with disconnects after sleep, 5 GHz dropouts and "invalid password" errors. Works on SteamOS 3.8.
  • Streaming auto mode (off by default). The lag spike fixes, buffer tuning and CAKE only kick in while Moonlight, Steam Remote Play, Chiaki, GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud, Parsec etc are running, then turn off so you get your battery back. Idea and first version by bassobr on GitHub.
  • CAKE traffic shaping, for bufferbloat without capping your bandwidth.
  • Smarter access point lock. On a mesh it picks the strongest AP instead of whatever you happen to be on, and goes back if the stronger one won't take the connection. If you walk off to another room it tells you it's holding you on the weaker AP and offers to move it.
  • Force 6 GHz for WiFi 6E routers. Heads up, it stays hidden on current SteamOS since it needs NetworkManager 1.58, which should land with SteamOS 3.9.
  • Settings get reapplied when a game launches, since the OS likes to reset some of them.
  • Drift detection: if something undoes a setting (sleep, a router, SteamOS), the panel shows it and "Fix now" puts it back. Covers custom DNS too.
  • It tells you when an update is out. One notification, never during a game or a stream, and you can turn it off.
  • The panel also warns you about a few network problems: your router handing the Deck an address another device already has, your network being saved twice with different security, or a stronger AP that only offers WPA2 ("Allow WPA2 here").
  • WiFi region setting, for devices whose card doesn't set its own.
  • Beta and Stable update channels.

More devices

  • Legion Go, ROG Ally, MSI Claw, AYANEO and GPD, plus Bazzite and CachyOS alongside SteamOS. The Claw/AYANEO/GPD profiles (thanks doughty247)

Updates are a lot safer

  • Releases are signed, and the plugin checks the signature before it installs anything. Each release links a VirusTotal scan.
  • Updating doesn't restart Steam anymore, the plugin just reloads itself.
  • The updater runs on its own, so a Decky restart can't cut it off halfway, and it won't start an update while a game or stream is running.

Fixes for things people hit

  • Works on Decky Loader 3.3.0 (it broke the plugin completely for a while).
  • The "have to re-enter my WiFi password every time" loop. If the lock is what's keeping you offline, it now gets released so you can reconnect, even with the panel closed.
  • Reset and uninstall undo everything on every network the plugin touched, and buffer settings go back to what your system had.
  • If you set a band or AP pin yourself, the plugin leaves it alone.
  • A settings file that can't be read is kept aside instead of being overwritten, and diagnostics leave out network names and addresses so they're safe to paste in an issue.
  • Lots of smaller polish: clearer errors, the panel uses less battery when it's closed, logs don't pile up forever.

Install and details: https://github.com/ArcadaLabs-Jason/WifiOptimizer

I always super appreciate user reports! Please let me know how it's working for you, especially if you have any issues

edit: As long as you're on 0.6.6 or later you can just update from inside the plugin, fyi. Also I put promotional but I don't like sell this, it's free and open source.

edit2: Need LCD Testers Some users are reporting issues on initial install with LCD model, others report it works great with LCD (got some testers in DM). Some users on LCD are reporting that it works fine after a reinstall of the plugin. If you have an LCD, please do report in with your steamos version, if you're on IWD or WPA, your decky version, other decky plugins and Wifi Optimizer version so I can find and fix any bugs if there are any there, I'd super appreciate it. I only have an OLED (gave my LCD away). Thanks

edit3: Got a good request to add an installable zip so people can install without having to drop to desktop (also it's virus total scanned as well). Avail as of latest release.

edit4: If you have other networking Decky plugins you may need to uninstall those first. Decky plays as nicely as it can but ultimately it's conflicting behavior and Wifi Optimizer is probably the most comprehensive.

Software Modding Some quick mafs comparing FSR4.1.2 Lite vs DLSS on Switch

Post image
71 Upvotes

The new Lite FSR4 model finally makes 1080p and 1440p output resolutions somewhat viable for the Steam Deck. For 1440p so long as the game can hit about 43fps (compared to 38fps for Switch 2) at 720p you can get a very clean looking 1440p image out at 30fps. 1080p as a target is even better.

PSA / Advice Protip: You can connect to your steam deck as if it were headphones, listening to and controlling audio from another device.

A lot of people don't know this about bluetooth on most linux distros, but you can connect your phone or bluetooth music player directly without installing anything. This is out of the box.

To do this, you must enable bluetooth in desktop mode, make your device discoverable. Connect to it with the other device. Your audio from your second device should be coming through your steamdeck speakers, headphones or whatever you normally use. When you switch back to gaming mode, you might have to reconnect, but it should still work.

You can even connect your bluetooth headphones to your deck and chain the audio from your bluetooth music player to your deck, to your bluetooth headphones.

This will work on pretty much all modern linux distros including things like ArmadaOS or Bazzite.

I don't know how many people needed to see this, but I don't see people bringing it up a lot. It's pretty neat and I use it daily in slower paced games to listen to music and podcasts.

edit: Worth noting that you can also adjust the relative audio levels of your deck and the music source in your audio settings on desktop, or if you're in game mode, there's a volume mixer plugin on decky.

Question Is it possible to hold something down without touching it?

Post image
• Upvotes

I was wondering if it's possible to make a button stay pressed internally without actually having to physically press it.

The example I gave from Minecraft doesn't matter if you don't understand it. But my idea is, for example, in a game where walking or moving forward is slow, so I don't have to spend SO MUCH time just moving the joystick forward, to be able to press a configured button and, even though it doesn't physically do anything, it's registered virtually as constantly pressing "W".

I spent some time looking in the control settings but couldn't find anything, so I came to consult your ancient arcane knowledge.

Tech Support Steam Deck strong enough for full wow Forever expirience?

I’m looking for a suitable handheld gaming device to play WoW Forever. I genuinely don’t need it to do anything other than run this one game.

It would be great if I could occasionally connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, as well as hook it up to a larger monitor via cable.

My requirements are pretty simple: play WoW Forever on the go and occasionally use it as a desktop setup with a bigger screen.

I’m leaning towards the Steam Deck because I really like the trackpads.
But I have a few questions:
Is the Steam Deck powerful enough to run WoW Forever?
Is it powerful enough to play the game on a larger external monitor?
Does WoW Forever run smoothly on SteamOS?

I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experience.

Question Final Fantasy Resonance at 800p?

Hi all,

Anyone tried the demo of Final Fantasy Resonance on steam deck (oled) and wondered if it was possible to play at native 800p ?

So far I could only play the demo at 720p with black bars top and bottom. Or use the built-in scaler to stretch or crop to 800p… interestingly I find the sharpness scaling option to work pretty well compared to the base settings, almost night and day actually.

Anyone else tried the demo and played with the resolution settings ?

Discussion [PLUGIN] New FSR 4.1.2 On Steam Deck ! Decky OptiScaler — v0.0.9 (FSR 4 Lite on OptiScaler v10)

Thumbnail
gallery
63 Upvotes

Before anyone says anything, yes this is an A.I project, and yes it is a fork of a previous project *NOT MADE BY ME* called Decky Optiscaler, made by DanielCamilo1 on Github.

All i did was an integration with the newest optiscaler version and the new fsr 4 for RDNA 2 gpu's.

You can have the newest FSR 4.1.2 on your steam deck by adding the files to your game manually, the idea here is having a plugin that do all of that for you, for all the games you want, without the needing of switching to your desktop and manually adding all of the files for each game.

I'm not the creator of anything here, i'm just doing this fork because i want to share with you guys something i did using A.I

What I did

FSR 4.1 ships as driver-level DLLs. On the Deck, FSR 4 Lite runs through the INT8 path — the lightweight model AMD made for APUs. I integrated that into the Decky OptiScaler plugin, which manages OptiScaler per game from Game Mode, and ported the whole thing to OptiScaler v10.

Result

FSR 4 upscaling on the Deck, in supported games, with no official AMD support.

Heads up: this is a community route on RDNA 2 — it uses shader cycles, so there's a real performance cost and results vary per game. It is not the same as AMD's official validated rollout.

How to get it

Unofficial fork of danielcamilo1's Decky OptiScaler plugin. Credit for the plugin goes to him; I did the v10 port and the FSR 4 Lite integration.

OptiScaler itself is by the OptiScaler team (GPL-3.0).

https://github.com/n1ckmp3/decky-optiscaler/releases/tag/v0.0.9

Two things to know

  1. OptiScaler v10 is currently a **prerelease** (10.0.0-pre1).
  2. **Do not use this with online games** — it can trigger anti-cheat and get youbanned. That warning comes from OptiScaler itself.

Please report problems with this fork in its own repo, not to the OptiScaler team or the original plugin author.

Still testing across games — reports welcome.

Both tests were made on performance preset.

Game Review On Deck XBLA Pac-Man Championship Edition (2007): native PC port optimised for Deck

Post image
6 Upvotes

https://github.com/jedeyesniv-art/Pacman-CE-PC-Recomp

I've spent the past couple of days vibecoding the heck out of this bad boy. Using regular xenia emulation it runs very poorly on PC and Deck, so I've done a static recomp using ReXGlue and spent a lot of time working on the performance so it's smooth and efficient on PC and Deck. On my 9700x we go from 30% CPU and very loud fans down to a quiet 10%. Now runs at full 60 on deck with minor drops sometimes.

This version fixes a bug that's been present since the XBOX360 release where the bottom 40 pixels of the playfield was cut off. For literally the first time ever, see the full image! It really makes a difference on the Deck.

I've also added a randomiser for the main Championship Mode, press R3 on the main menu to turn the title red and you'll next load into a secret mode. R3 toggles it. No highscores saved when in random.

Supply your own dump and enjoy.

I hope literally anyone plays this, I've always loved this game and it's a shame it was never ported to PC. Well now it has.

Tech Support Is this Steam Deck LCD still fixable?

• Upvotes

Recently I bought this SD with a BSOD thinking a bios reflash would fix it. Same typical signs, boot chime plays when power button is pressed, fans engage, and haptics are working. But, there is no display at all even externally. Previous owner claims that technician he sent it to says it's a board problem and would need replacement. To me that was very vague and so I thought I'd take a shot at fixing it since it was cheap.

I desoldered the bios chip (because the clip was getting on my nerves) to reflash a clean bios using a CH341a programmer. I'm 95% confident that I did it correctly, but nothing seemed to change. Still the same symptoms.

So I did the one thing I have not previously tried: draining the battery completely.

Now, not only does the SD boot without display, it just does the 3 LED flickers when the power button is engaged. Plugging it in to power does turn it on (to the previous BSOD signs) but now it can't even normally power on. tried leaving it to charge for a night but same signs. Tried the button combinations to get it out of battery storage mode, still the same. What could be posing issues? Like do I have to replace a couple of chips?

Question Did anyone who had their deck stolen by GLS/posties in transit ever get their money back?

I’ve ordered a deck in the UK recently, and only after scrolling through here for a bit to get an idea of shipping times did I see all the theft stories. Slightly disconcerting, but whatever. I know Valve tends to be quite good on customer support but the initial comments on these threads look bleak and then don’t get updated.

Do we know of any posters that managed to get their money back? Would the burden be on Steam or GLS to figure the situation out?

Discussion Anyone play Simpsons Hit and Run Definitive Edition yet?

I have, and it's not bad. Downloaded the mod from Mod DB, adeed the .exe to steak games, ran the installer – I already had the lucasmods launcher so it made it a bit easier – then add Lucasmod to Steam, fiddle with additional settings. The game looks great for what it is. If anyone would like a thorough review, or walkthrough to install on Deck, I'd be happy to help!

P.S. you do need a PC copy of the game to run this mod!

Guide Azeroth Survivors on Steamdeck

I know this is pretty niche, but in case anyone was looking or got stuck trying to get it to work. I got no hits when I tried to google it. I managed to get Azeroth Survivors running on Steam Deck.

Firstly in Desktop Mode, download and extract the Windows version, keeping AzerothSurvivors.exe and the complete Data folder together. Open Steam, select Games → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse, and add the .exe. This will make it show up in your library. Then right click the game in your library and go to its Properties, make sure “Start In” points to the folder containing the executable (however this should be automatic as you selected that exe in the first place, then go to Compatibility and force Proton Experimental.

The game initially crashed on launch, but forcing Vulkan fixed it. Under Properties → Launch Options, enter WGPU_BACKEND=vulkan %command%. Then launch it through Steam—you can also return to Gaming Mode and find it under Non-Steam games. Seems to run pretty good so far. Not changed the controls or anything yet but doesn't seem to need much adjustment.
