Listened to the interview with Sarah Friar from OpenAI the other day who said that they got 180 medical cases that doctors haven’t been able to solve, OpenAI tried to help and have solved 40 so far with ChatGPT. I will get the interview and link it below.

There's a whole field of work called drug repurposing that's been going on for years, where AI is used to identify promising additional uses for existing FDA approved drugs.
So if you eat half of your words, we can call it even.

Kind of reminds me of an old 'Mission Accomplished' banner somewhere. Anyway, I just asked Claude Fable 5.1 which said 'My opinion: no, we haven’t. I can do some things far beyond any human and fail at things a ten-year-old handles. That unevenness is strong evidence we’re not at “surpasses humans across the board” — we’re at “a weird new kind of capability profile.”'

Some are being programmed to seek to avoid the pain of punishment and/or the pleasure of reward. Even if you don’t recognize that as emotion, they are the building blocks and full emotion is not too far off.

Claude aggregates information by recognizing patterns, so it's really good at looking at things that have happened and spitting out the most likely result of things that are like those things.
Whereas a ten years old has actual thoughts and introspection.

I’m tired. I used to love AI. Back then, everyone was honest and looking for something truly disruptive. Everyone knew, for instance, that audiobooks could be used to train high-quality Tacotron models—but it would have meant using stolen work, so no one dared to do it. Nowadays, these slick, polished types show up—looking for all the world like captains from the Dutch East India Company—proclaiming that the future has arrived. It makes me want to go live with an Indigenous tribe.

Singularity means growth that we can't even comprehend and lots of breakthroughs in medicine at least. OpenAI and Anthropic are releasing models quickly but not THAT quickly. Also, not even a single breakthrough that people other than nerds care about. Unless AI cures baldness I won't ever agree we reached the singularity 😤.

11
u/Asleep-Ingenuity-481 1d ago
I mean technically yes, I do believe we are in the singularity, moreso than ever, I don't consider it to be a single set event.
It's like claiming "We are in the great depression" or something, you don't get to claim it as it's going on, you do so later.
I think we will pin point the start of the singularity to somewhere around GPT 3's release, but that's my personal opinion. Someone could say the singularity started when the first transformer model was released, or the first electrical computational device was created.
→ More replies (1)4
u/jeffskool 1d ago
It is a singular thing, maybe not event because that implies a moment in time most of the time. But the idea comes from mathematics where you have a point, or a line, or other structure where the function blows up. It happens “there”, at “that” thing. Like the event horizon of a black hole. We can’t see beyond it, no matter how close we get, or how hard we look. We can see what will happen next month, still. The models will get better, they will solve some math problems, proteins will get folded, some diseases will get better treatments, robotic advancements with Boston dynamics dogs moonwalking…none of that is beyond our sight to see. AGI is not something we can see beyond. Until that begins to emerge the singular structure, that blind, is still very much in our future

It is all Marketing hype. So irresponsible, they keep claiming we are steps ahead of what we really are so they can get more funding.
I decided to see what Claude thought of this new revelation...
Me to Claude Opus 5.5:
Some people are claiming that we have now reached the Singularity in October 2026, as an LLM, do you agree? Have YOU reached the Singularity?
Claude:
No, and I haven’t. The people saying “we’re in it” are mostly using a weaker definition than the original one.
Where the claim breaks: The classic definition requires AI that surpasses human intelligence and improves itself faster than people can predict or control. What’s actually happening is acceleration with humans still in the loop.
What would change my answer: A model substantially designing and training its successor with minimal human direction, where each generation arrives faster than the last.
5
u/wwants ▪️What Would Kurzweil Do? 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah I built a model to measure how close we are and it’s currently sitting at 32% with a wide estimate of when we’ll get there between 2028-2048. I expect that to get more specific as we get closer.
