Films Title: Suggest me some underrated sci fi series regardless of the language
I am looking for some good science fiction series to watch and I don't mind the language as long as the series is worth watching
Please suggest some underrated hidden gems rather than the usual popular shows that everyone recommends
I am open to anything involving time travel parallel universes alternate realities artificial intelligence space exploration dystopian futures or mind bending concepts
Feel free to recommend series from any country

Devs
Starring Nick Offerman. The first few episodes are slow but it picks up. A true hard sci-fi where the main conflict comes down to which interpretation of quantum mechanics is correct.

The show Travelers had a great high-concept premise that it did some interesting stuff with. It never feels like it has an especially high budget but the idea doesn't really need huge set pieces; the characters are strong and they carry the show. It also has a pretty good conclusion, maybe a little hasty but still satisfying and complete.

The first two that came to mind:
“The Silent Sea” - a Korean sci-fi thriller set on a abandoned lunar base.
“Mars” - a docudrama series by National Geographic set on (you’ll never guess) Mars.
Both are definitely worth watching.

Alterated Carbon S1 is highly known and rated so I assumed not the type of show you are looking for.

Well you asked for "underrated shows". 6.9 is still highly watchable. Especially considering non-english series often get some downvotes from english speakers who can't overcome the language barrier.

"The Silent Sea" is. "Mars" not so much but each season still has somewhat of a finished story arc.

Raumpatrouille Orion from 1966. Pretty much the West German counterpart to Star Trek. It has only seven episodes that were cut into a movie decades later. I have no idea if this ever got an English translation.

Another anime: Legend Of The Galactic Heroes. It might be the best space opera you've never seen, especially if you like political and historical philosophy mixed in with your pewpew. It's kind of like if GRRM wrote Star Wars. And actually finished the story.
Watch the 90s version. The recent remake is only half-done and probably won't be finished until sometime in the 30s.

Defiance. I rarely see people talking about it. It feels like a mix between Firefly and Babylon 5.

Here's all sci-fi series I like (very picky, I only like about 10 total):
WELL-KNOWN: Watch Fringe, Severance, and (the first 2 seasons of) Westworld if you still haven't.
NOT SO WELL-KNOWN: Silo, Paradise, The Prisoner (1967), Star Trek (1966, everyone knows it, but few try to actually watch it)
RELATIVELY UNKNOWN: Station Eleven, Tales from the Loop, Dark Matter

I'm in my late 30s and on season 2 of the original star Trek series. Highly recommend.

Station Eleven is amazing and one of the best adaptations from book to TV I've seen.

I’ve watched it. Solid B+.

u/Prudent-Address-7394 2d ago
Actually I will give ths a try since I never watched any spanish series where can I watch it though?
2
u/Fit-Meal4943 2d ago
It was on Netflix with subtitles., not sure if it’s still there.
It only gets a B+ from me because I tend to overthink time travel stuff.

Helgoland 513. A German post apocalypse show that’s set on an island with frighteningly strict population control rules.

Dark

Yep. But watch it with the original German audio and English subtitles (i originally tried watching it in dubbed English and it was unwatchable… then I circled back a year or two later to give it a try with subtitles and was immediately hooked).

Battlestar Galactica and Caprica were both amazing at the time. BsG had storylines that were taken from current headlines of the war in Iraq. It was such a cool show.
Caprica was going to be great, but got pulled after one season. Someone will go back and make more one day. It would be an amazing project.

Parallels (2020-ish) on Disney+. It’s French. It’s like a PG version of Dark, (similar time travel/multiple universe type deal, but with different plot, obviously). At first glance it looks like it’s a series for kids, but it’s not. I mean, I think it’s kid friendly, but it would be way over the head of kids.
Our Times (2025). A husband/wife duo of professors get transported to an alternate universe. I believe it’s a Mexican film. Pretty good. It’s streaming somewhere.

Other Space (2015) is a fun little 8-episode series from Paul Feig and a couple of the original Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys (Joel and Trace) whose premise is a satirical take on Star Trek: Voyager
It originally premiered on the Yahoo! streaming service, so it never had a chance, but the comedy is pretty good. Episode 1 is a little iffy because they have to get the setup and introductions out of the way, but from episode 2 onwards the episode premises and jokes are all pretty solid.
Most of the principal actors are very young or early in their careers but they have great coaching from the industry veterans on-set so the comedic performances all punch above their weight, plus they give them great material to work with.
Spoiler: Episode 2 is an among us premise where the alien turns out to be a shapeshifter who only speaks in Matthew McConaghey quotes

Another anime recommendation: Planetes
It’s about some space debris cleaners that live on a space station orbiting earth

The Peripheral checks most of those off in a single episode. Not sure about under-rated though. Just not as well known as it should be.

Hyperdrive A comedy starring Nick Frost about the somewhat inadequate* crew of HMS Camden Lock.
* Inadequate is a relative term. Wait until you meet the Queppu.

I loved the film 12 Monkeys. Last year, I viewed the television series 12 Monkeys with some trepidation. The series was excellent. I recommend both.

Two suggestions: Warehouse 13 and From, depending on the mood you want.
Warehouse 13 was actually one of SYFY’s biggest hits when it aired, so “overlooked these days” might fit better than “underrated.” It follows agents tracking down historical objects with extraordinary powers. You get unusual technology, time travel, alternate realities, mysteries, and plenty of humor. The characters and the family they become are what really make it special.
From is a much darker recommendation. People find themselves trapped in a town they can’t escape, with dangerous creatures coming out at night. If you enjoy unsettling mysteries, strange rules, and trying to piece together what’s happening, it’s worth a look. Definitely more horror-focused, though.

Here is a new show that is asymmetrical in how the story unfolds. 4 of the 6 episodes have released with new ones dropping on Saturdays.

Its more fantasy than sci fi but fits the vibe of most sci fi shows I think...

The ark, Resident Alien, 12 monkeys series, Orphan Black, Star trek strange new worlds, Killjoys, dark matter, Paradise, Silo, Foundation, Severance, Battlestar Galactica and prequel Caprica, Eureka, WArehouse 13, Timeless, The librarians, The lazarus project, The way home, 11.22.63, Continuum, Travelers, Defiance, The new and old quantum leap, La Brea, Manifest

u/ZookeepergameAny466 15h ago
Need to point out that the Librarians, Warehouse 13 and Eureka (all of which I enjoy btw) are not science fiction. They're fantasy.
1
u/productjunkie76 7h ago
I disagree. Eureka is def sci fi and the other 2 have sci fi elements. Pure fantasy/supernatural would be something like The Witcher.

Is Farscape considered underrated? I feel like everyone who knows it, rates it. It would be like saying, say, Babylon 5 was underrated.
Farscape.

u/ZookeepergameAny466 15h ago
You know what are underrated time travel shows? Travelers and Timeless. Maybe even Continuum, even though its middle section is a slog. But the ending makes it worth it.

I really enjoyed Terra Nova and wished it lasted more than a season. I’ll add another vote for Torchwood and Defiance as well. Doctor Who and The 100 are also fave’s that I’ve rewatched several times.

What miserable schmuck redditor felt it necessary to downvote OP’s post? What about this could have possibly offended you enough to actually click the downvote button? Boggles my mind.
