Moderator approved post Scam Jobs and How to Tell If it's a Scam

There are many job-related scams. The scammers prey on people who are out of work and don't have much money. They lie and trick you into giving them money, or get you involved in illegal activities.

Here is information to help you filter out the scams and fake jobs:

Easy remote part-time jobs are 100% scams.

It is very difficult to get a remote or work-from-home job, unless you have experience in software engineering, insurance claims, healthcare, customer service, or other specialized fields.

The majority of 'remote jobs' are actually scams to take your money - even on the recruiting and networking websites such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor or Indeed.

  • Scam job titles include Virtual Personal Assistant, Remote Data Entry, Remote Payment Processor, Remote Financial Assistant, work-from-home Shipping Inspector, and Order Optimization Specialist.

  • Posting real estate listings online is a scam.

  • Also, any job that is simple online tasks, such as rating videos, posting reviews, putting items into an online shopping cart, booking hotel reservations, or subscribing to YouTube channels, is a scam. No company pays for tapping on a screen, doing simple online tasks.

But scammers can call their fake job anything. To separate a scam from a real job opportunity, key indicators to look for are: method of contact (email), interview (on videochat), and money (reasonable pay, comparable to similar jobs).

Real companies don't contact you for a job that you didn't apply for, unless you have specialized skills or you have years of experience and are known throughout your industry.

When you apply for a job, a legitimate employer will first contact you on the networking platform (such as LinkedIn), or use email. And an email from a free provider, such as Gmail or Hotmail, is usually the sign of a fake job.

Real companies don't recruit or interview with text messages, or on TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Zangi, Viber, Instagram, Facebook, Craigslist, Reddit, or Discord.

Legitimate employers interview either in person or on videochat, whether the job is going to be remote, on-site, or hybrid.

  • An interview that is text only, email, or video chat with their camera off is a scam.

  • A preliminary phone interview is legitimate if it is followed by a live interview.

  • A recorded video is legitimate only if it's followed by a live interview.

  • An interview that is phone only may be legitimate, for entry-level in-person jobs.

If the pay is much higher than comparable jobs, then it's a scam.

Legitimate companies don't require you to pay them for anything. For a real job, the money goes in one direction only: from employer to employee. Never give an employer money for fees, registration, training, background check, investment higher commissions, hardware, software, equipment, or anything else. Any 'employer' that requires you to pay them is actually a scam to take your money.

For a legitimate remote or work-from-home job, an employer provides the equipment you need. (Some minimum wage WFH jobs may ask you to use your own laptop or desktop.) They load software onto a laptop or desktop, and ship it to you. They don't ask you to buy the equipment. They don't send you money or give you a credit card to buy equipment -- the check, money transfer, or credit card is from a stolen account and you will lose money.

Real jobs don't pay in cryptocurrency.

A real employer will never ask you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers on the back.

Legitimate companies never ask you how you want to be paid. They have their standard pay schedule and type (for example: direct deposit every two weeks).

A real company will never ask you to receive money and send money to someone else, or to use your own bank account for company business. This is a money mule scam, you will lose money, and you may face criminal charges.

Real jobs do not involve re-shipping packages from home. This is a parcel mule scam -- you will be handling stolen products, and you may face criminal charges.

Always research a company before you interview. Click here for tips:

Victim of a scam {US} Victim of a sophisticated scam that I can't understand

I got a text that my cc had been used to purchase about $400 worth of stuff at Walmart. I needed to respond Yes or No if it was me. I responded No, and I got an automated message that I had already replied.
As soon as I could I called Visa, and they said they got a "yes" response via email to this question. I said it was not me that responded. I had no email in my inbox, trash, sent folder, and no forwarding set up.
I figured out that my Walmart account, not just the cc, had been hacked. I had a cc on file (not anymore). There were two orders, and one went through and the scammers picked it up at the store, even without all the confirmation information (since I had then changed my email pw and all the confirmations came to me, although I didn't see them in time to stop their pickup.)
What I can't figure out is how the scammers hacked into my email to intercept the Walmart confirmation emails and also the Visa alert about the scam. Anyone know how they did it?

Help Needed Friend visiting Scam Artist in Nigeria

Hey everyone, I’m reaching out for advice regarding a friend of a friend who may be in a dangerous situation.
For the past 3 years, she has been in a long-distance relationship with someone who goes by “David.” They message and FaceTime regularly, and she occasionally sends him money. Her friends and family strongly suspect she is being scammed, and when his social media accounts are searched, they reportedly come up flagged as belonging to a known scammer.

Unfortunately, she is planning to travel to Nigeria in November to meet him for the first time and has discussed marriage while she is there. Her family and friends are now extremely concerned about her physical safety, not just the financial side of things.

We know romance scams can go much deeper than money, and we’re afraid of what could happen when she arrives. She currently believes the relationship is real and is not receptive to concerns from those around her.
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or have advice on how we can help protect her? We want to approach this carefully without pushing her further away from the people who care about her. Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated.

Any advice I receive from here I will be sharing with her family because I honestly do not personally know or communicate with the effected person but am still concerned.

Is this a scam? Is this a military romance scam?

A guy messaged me on Reddit claiming to be a US Army sergeant deployed in Syria. We barely know each other, but he's already talking about soulmates and moving to be with me.

His deployment story and uniform don't seem to match what I found online. He also called me by the wrong name and avoided my questions when I asked him to explain.

Now he's telling me his ex stole money from his bank account and that he's getting sick because of the food where he's deployed.

He hasn't asked me for money, but the whole thing feels off. Has anyone seen a similar situation before?

Help Needed My Amazon got hacked and the items are being shipped to a place 30 mins away from me

• Upvotes

They bought 2 $600 smartwatches. I canceled my cards and tried to cancel the orders but they seem to have gone through and is being shipped tomorrow. Amazon gave it to UPS and i tried contacting UPS to cancel it or to return it but they said that Amazon won’t let them. I’m tempted to go and drive to the address and get the package for myself since they ordered it under my government name. BUT, I did look up who lives at the address and it shows a woman with multiple felony drug charges lol. It might be cooked. I just dont want the scammers to win ughh. I also worry that Amazon will claim that the items were delivered so I have to return it to receive my refund. Which is impossible, obviously. My bank hasn’t gotten back to me about the charges yet and neither has Amazon. I’m so frustrated!! What do you guys think I should do? Should I just take the L?

Help Needed Is this job a scam? Can't be too safe nowadays

I have been applying for remote jobs on Indeed but I don't remember applying to this job. They emailed me this at first

"Thank you for your interest in the Marketing Assistant remote position at DAAR Investment Property LLC. We have a quick question before moving forward.

Could you please provide your earliest availability to begin as we need to fill this position promptly. Once we receive your availability, we will share further details regarding the position and the next steps in the hiring process.

Please reply to this email with the requested information by October 19. This will help us move your application forward."

So since i've been applying i got excited so I replied and then they reached back out to me and sent me another email:

"This morning, our hiring team finalized the review of all shortlisted candidates and selected another applicant whose qualifications closely matched the position's requirements. However, because we are currently expanding, we will need to hire an additional Marketing Assistant to support our growth by the third week of December. In the meantime, I have a Personal Assistant position you can start next week, and you can transition to the Marketing Assistant position by December as you are our other preferred candidate.

Personal Assistant Position

I need an efficient PA to handle some of my activities in my absence, and relieve my workload, as my schedule is constantly busy and I'm often out of town on business trips. I am embarking on a business trip to Vancouver, Canada tomorrow and will return home on November 12th.

This part-time, remote position offers the flexibility to work from any location and set your own schedule, allowing you to hold another job. The position is ideal for an honest individual who can support tasks such as typing letters, memos and reports, booking flights and hotel reservations, paying bills, printing exhibition invitations, and other similar tasks.

If you accept this position, you will start working next week. You will work 15 hours per week, and I will start by paying you $600 weekly. I will pay all expenses and taxes, including your weekly salaries and bonuses. Additionally, you will earn a $600 sign-on bonus after completing 60 hours of work with satisfactory performance. At that time, we can discuss increasing the weekly hours and salary based on mutual agreement.

This temporary position could become permanent based on your performance. You can choose to transition to the Marketing Assistant position when it opens in December, or you can keep this PA position long-term. The choice is yours when the time comes but for now, this temporary PA position is a great opportunity for you to get acquainted with the company and your colleagues.

If interested, reply to confirm your willingness to accept the PA position so I can schedule a quick interview with you."

Help Needed Deluge of verification codes

Hey all, a friend of mine was just spammed with a ridiculous number of the "this is your code to verify your login" emails from like 30 different companies. I had her screenshot the emails, and I googled them and they all appear to be legitimate emails (or no nneta vs meta in email) and showed up as the expected email to receive those types of codes from.

However, they were all for things she's never signed up for, including companies that neither of us had heard of, and she had never signed up for.

I instructed her to kick all devices she didn't recognize, change her password and set up 2fa, which she did. I suggested she email the companies and let them know she was not trying to sign in but she declined as she does not have energy right now to email 30+ companies. I checked have I been pwned or whatever its called and the email has not been part of any data leaks that they are aware of.

Is there anything I'm missing or anything else she should be doing?

Scam report Vinted Scam Attempt as of 10/21/26

Thumbnail

Vinted sellers, please be careful… there is a new wave of scam attempts going on. The moment you post a new item for sell, you’ll receive an email from “Vinted” with two links claiming you the seller submitted a report for one of your own listing. First link takes you to a nonvinted website to “verify” yourself and the second link will have a link of your own listing and sometimes it’ll have someone else’s listing.

Vinted is notorious for scams if not careful. Before opening, I stress to preview the link and check the url before completely committing to clicking on the link.

Informational post [US] Finally Got a Good Scam Targeted at my Type of Work (gmcranenium.com)

I do a lot of contract and contract consulting work. I got an email from a friend of mine in the same type of work and type of contracts. The title and the introduction made perfect sense, and the contract RFI’s address (company not disclosed) was one well known to me as I had worked for that company before

So, I thought it was a friend reaching out for a new opportunity. I clicked the PDF link, then immediately realized my mistake when it opened a new website, which I closed before it could load

Because it came from a known friend and referencing a contract RFI which is what I do, and contained a familiar address, I let my guard down

First, my friend would have given me a heads up before sending me an RFI

Second, I was on the BCC line (which I obviously didn’t notice at a glance)

Third, the “PDF” link was in the body of the message and not the attachments

Last and not least, the next to last sentence of the email used “kindly”, which anyone who frequents r/Scams knows what that means

Domain registered on 10/19/2026

I don’t think this was an attack aimed at just me, because of the BCC field. I think that the attackers probably used AI to read his messages and formulate a convincing scenario. I think it just hit home to me hard because I instantly recognized the address and he and I had both worked there before. Others in the BCC list might have been convinced without the same shared experiences, but the convincing email until “kindly”

Be safe out there! I’ll slow down next time

P.S. I would have texted my friend to call me, but I don’t have his phone number 😔 We’ve only talked in person or email. I will be getting his phone number for future verifications!

Victim of a scam [US] My father prompted me to look into the company I just applied for.

And after he did, this sub helped me realize I got roped into a parcel mule scam.

They've only sent one package so far, and it hasn't arrived at my house yet. But I feel dumb as a brick now. They have my name, number, address, DoB, banking info, SSN, even my damn signature.

None of which would be that odd for on-boarding to a company in my experience, but that I now realize is probably in the hands of malicious parties. Not sure what all I should do other than freezing my credit and refusing any further parcels from this company.

Edit: Thanks all of you for your advice. I've taken every precaution available to me, and if you find yourself in similar circumstances I recommend you do as well.

Scam report How did they know I had packages coming today? "FedEx" failed delivery and texted me: https://fedex@nkvlww.shop/query

I was receiving 3 packages today. 1 from Amazon, two from other vendors (independent LLCs), and I had not looked too deeply into the carrier, but I knew they were being delivered today (10/21/2026) around 8am-12pm. I received a text shortly after the first package arrived (claiming to be FedEx) saying my delivery failed due to not being around to sign for the package.

It said I had till tomorrow (10/22/26) to reply Y to the text and follow the link (I typed the link into the Subject info) to redeliver/pickup the package. Strangely there was no delivery option, and the link looked a bit weird. I clicked it and was taken to a legitimate looking FedEx tracking page with the exact delivery date of my package.

They asked for $1.06 as a fee and to put my card info in.

My Chase Visa was "not able to be used" or something like that, I tried my Uber Mastercard, and it worked but did not charge me. Instead, I received a 2-Factor Authentication text from Branch (my Uber card bank) with a code to use to add the card to Apple Pay.

They are just phishing numbers and contact info. Really weird that they got lucky with the timing. It's almost as if they knew I would be receiving packages today, but they messed up by claiming to be FedEx. Both my packages in transit are coming from UPS.

I didn't realize, of course, until I had already given them two cards... thankfully I did not lose the money nor could they capitalize on it before I locked and closed both cards. I called their number listed in the previous section, and it goes directly to voicemail.

I am a tech savvy 28 year old man and have been working with computers my whole life. I am no cybersecurity consul, however, I have only fallen for a couple of scams in my life and have been exposed to thousands.

I fell for this one too easily.

I am literally trying to be less cautious with my actions because I have crippling overthinking issues, and even I fell for this garbage. I worry for the older folks who are even higher anxiety, high trust, low inhibition, technically challenged, and just plain sweet and easy to take advantage of. God help them, and please make this scam known so that others may be protected.

Is this a scam? My husband fell for a phone scam. How screwed are we?

Hey everyone,

So my husband received a phone call from someone claiming that another person was trying to use his personal information to get insurance under his name.

The caller told him to write down his name, some other information, and a policy number. Unfortunately, my husband did exactly that. Then the caller asked him to read everything back over the phone, which he also did.

The worst part is that my husband also confirmed his actual full name when the caller asked, not the name the scammer had originally given him.

He later realized it was probably a scam, but now we’re worried about what they could do with the information he shared.

The scammers also keep calling him even after he realized what was going on.

I know he fucked up by trusting the caller, but I’m genuinely worried about what could happen next.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is confirming his real name enough for scammers to steal his identity? Could they use the recorded conversation against him or somehow open an insurance policy or other accounts in his name?

What steps should we take to protect ourselves?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Scam report [US] Scam Warning - Email from Vinted

Hello!

I just wanted to give a warning on a scam attempt I just received. An email came to me from an official Vinted account. It looks like scammers are reporting things for sale on Vinted under a potential victim's email and leaving scam links in the description for their victims to click on. I don't have a Vinted account, so I knew it was immediately fake. It looks like you can report without an account, but they ask for an email address, which is where I assume the scammer put in mine so I would get their scam link from the description. I just wanted to report it so that others can be aware as I've never seen this one before. I searched first and while other scams happen on Vinted, i couldn't find anything quite like this.

Here is the email:

FROM: Vinted's no-reply domain

SUBJECT: You have submitted a report for 1 prohibited or illegal listings

BODY:

Hello,
Vinted's team have received your report. Here is a summary:

edit: I've received three more "reported item" scam emails today.  They are working overtime on this one trying to get someone to click their link in the description.  Do not click it!

Scam report PSA: Watch out for this graphic design scam

This is for my graphic design folks with a public portfolio website and thinking they got a lead from an intake form.

Edit: I did not get scammed by them but wanted to share here and warn! The email is from hellocraigjakework@gmail

The email goes like this:

Hello,
I am looking for a designer to help create a clean, professional logo decal design, I found your work through your website and would be interested in discussing a new logo with you.
My budget for the project is approximately $900–$1,000, depending on the scope and what is included.
If you’re available and interested, please let me know, and I’d be happy to provide more details about the business, design direction, and what I’m looking for.
I look forward to hearing from you, Thank you for your time.
Jake Craig

————

Steps: you answer
Scammer: responds with very detailed requirements for logo design which makes you think they know exactly what they need. Then says 50% deposit is made by cheque.. etc they get you to deposit and refund them because of overpayment .. cheque bounces. You’re on the hook.

I’m sure this has happened a lot but just a general psa again!

Help Needed [US] Scammed by recovery scam

Alright so I’ve been scammed by my ex for something and I posted about asking for help. And I got a DM referring me to someone on telegram that help them with the same situation im in. I didn’t know about these scams before because this is the first time something like this happened to me. Now i know to look out for these thing but that’s besides the point. The guy in telegram was helping me with getting my ex’s account banned and then he asked if I wanted to get my funds back and I said yes.

So he did this whole were he looked into the account and found multiple wallets linked to it and said one of the accounts had a balance of 3900 is USDT. I’ve never done anything with crypto so I didn’t really know what he was talking about. But my ex’s friend did mess with crypto and used her account to buy stuff on it, so I believed him. We went through a whole process where I was supposed to take the USDT from the scammers account and put it to my account and into my bank account and make sure it was encrypted. But since I don’t have an id I couldn’t get the ETH I need to transfer the USDT to my account.

The rest is really us trying to figure out how to get the ETH into my account so I could pay the fee. I had to buy a razor gold gift card and try to use that but it didn’t work. So I had to send it to him and he tried doing it but it didn’t work, and I ended up sending him about $390 I think in razor gold gift card. I was giving him low amounts in gift cards like 50-70 bucks but he said he thinks they weren’t working because of the low amount and that he’s never really worked with amounts less than 100. Never the less 220 dollars worth of gifts didn’t work to get sent to my wallet so he did this thing were he used the a 3rd party site to transfer the money to my account but there was a $96.50 fee so I had to send him another 100.

Once all that he said the money would be in my bank account in about 10 minutes through Zelle. But I didn’t receive anything and I’ve been contacting him since 11 am but have gotten no response.

I don’t need people to tell me how it was obviously a scam and how im dumb for falling for it, i already know that. But now im sitting here with a crypto account with $4700 worth of crypto and unsure what to do? Just need a little guidance on what to do.

Victim of a scam My Debit card information was compromised.

I dont know how it happened, but I found out last night around midnight, my Bank card (PNC) had 2 different charges from the same merchant, who I don't know. Obviously they have my information or got it from somewhere, because I am now out $813.00. How dies this happen? I have tracked down the stores I have visited and used my card, and nothing like this has happened before. On top of this, I am going on a trip tomorrow morning, and needed to close out my card to keep if from happening again, and I need to fill out a "dispute" form in my bank. What I can't understand is that my bank usually calls me about charges over a certain amount of money, and this time they did not. I am fuming.

Is this a scam? [AUS] Did I get Scammed on Ebay?

Post image
2 Upvotes

On the 11th of Oct I bought workout equipment from EBAY (maybe 20kg?) and it is said to arrive anywhere from the 28th Oct to the 9th of November, however, I think I may have gotten scammed.

I took the attached picture today and none of the bubbles signifying any movement has been coloured in, ive been trying to be patient since this is a larger parcel so I get that it wont ship here that quickly, and it is coming from the United States, but the information of the seller also states that they are based in Israel. Is it normal for it to say that the place its shipping from and the sellers information be different? I never shop online so I am just full of confusion.

Thank you!

Help Needed [US] So when will the spam calls stop?

We all get spam calls. Back in May though, I began getting at least five per day during the week. I've had the "Silence Unknown Callers" feature activated for years on my iPhone, but the handful of robo recordings day after day drove me mad.

After a month of agony, I changed my voicemail greeting to 2+ minutes of complete silence. It's an improvement in that the robocallers aren't leaving incessant messages anymore—they usually hang up after about 45 to 60 seconds on the line.

Sadly, the calls themselves show no real signs of stopping. I've read that putting myself on a "Do Not Call" list won't work. Is anyone else dealing with a similar wave of calls? Have you made it stop or slow down somehow? What else can I do to get these dickheads off my back?

Is this a scam? [US]First time eBay seller

Is this an eBay scam? I’m new to selling 😭

I’m new to selling on eBay, and someone messaged me through the app asking for a video of my Kobo. They wanted me to send it to their phone number, so we continued talking through text.

They eventually asked for my email, and I received emails claiming they paid $540 ($240 for the Kobo and $300 for shipping). The emails said I needed to ship the item and provide tracking before the payment would appear in my eBay account.

I checked my Orders, but nothing showed up. I also noticed that the supposed eBay emails didn’t have the same logo or sender icon as the legitimate eBay emails I usually receive, which made me even more suspicious.

I have a feeling this is a scam, especially with the extra $300 for shipping, but since I’m new to selling, I wanted to ask people with more experience.

Does this sound like a scam to you? I haven’t shipped anything yet.

Help Needed [US] Credit card got scammed

Ok... So i was doing signup for my oracle free tier account. In that i used my one uncles credit card who lives almost 5km away from my current location. Somehow the credit card got hacked. But one thing i didn't understand that his two credit cards were affected and amounts were deducted from both card but i used only one. There was no connection between my laptop and his phone. We were neither on same network or close enough that it could be hacked. He was 5km away from my location still his both cards details were stolen.

My question is.. Is this leaked happened because of my laptop but my laptop have only one credit card info and no other info like phone number or email and credit card is also not saved in my laptop. Or that uncle phone is hacked

Is it possible to get someone details like how many cards they have and all cards details

Help Needed Ticket purchases via Facebook

I think I may have made a stupid decision and need some advice.

My friend and I wanted concert tickets for $150 total, but prices had jumped to $600. I found a facebook seller with about 5k followers who agreed to sell us two tickets for $300.

After some back-and-forth over payment, I sent $150 via paypal for one ticket and another $150 via chime. He sent me one ticket, but then claimed he couldn't transfer the second one individually because he bought them in pairs. He wanted me to return the first ticket so he could send both together. I refused and disputed the PayPal payment, which was refunded.

Now I have one ticket in my Apple Wallet, but I'm worried it might be fake or duplicated.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Does having a ticket in apple wallet mean anything, and is there a way to verify it's legitimate before showing up at the venue?

Would really appreciate any advice!

Help Needed [US] what should I do after accidentally giving out my personal information?

I accidentally gave out my email (which has my full name but its a decently common name? also a lot of my accounts for websites have a similar username, ive already changed one) and my phone number to someone I thought was selling tickets to a concert. I only realized when they started dodging my questions about college (since I foudn out through it on a college specific discord).

Thankfully I didn't get scammed. I've already reported it to the ftc and included the two phone numbers that they tried to scam me at (one was their number and the other weas the zelle number), is there anything else I can do to protect my information or? I was thinking about changing my number...

also sorry if this type of post is kinda common
