To give a bit of background: over the last 20 years or so, my tech journey has been pretty evenly split—roughly 10 years on Android followed by about 10 years on various iPhones. I consider myself a true power user rather than an average consumer, so I really like to push my devices to their absolute limits and tailor them to my exact workflow.
After a decade back in the Apple ecosystem, I made the jump to the Samsung Z Fold 8. Not only did I manage to completely replace every single iOS service and feature I relied on, but it also unlocked a whole set of capabilities I had almost forgotten I needed.
That massive inner display—which I fitted with a matte screen protector to get as close as possible to the iPhone Duo paper-like vibe—has finally given a foldable a real, meaningful place in my digital setup.
Replacing iOS & The Ecosystem Bridge
One of my biggest concerns was losing the ecosystem magic, but I’ve successfully replaced virtually everything I used on iOS with equivalent or better alternatives on Samsung/Android.
Even the legendary Universal Clipboard (copy on phone, paste on MacBook) is seamlessly up and running. If anyone is interested in the specifics, let me know in the comments—I’d be happy to write a detailed breakdown of how I replaced every single iOS service, and what brand-new features Android offers that iOS simply cannot replicate right now.
The iPad Dilemma
Over the last few years, I went through a cycle of buying and selling various iPads. I wanted to love them so badly, but I constantly found myself not using them enough to justify keeping them. It felt like a genuine waste to have a device sitting around just to be used every now and then.
The one that lasted the longest was the iPad Mini, but even then, as a power user, I kept running into limits that drove me crazy:
- No proper browser extensions.
- Zero option to sideload apps outside the official App Store.
- A frustrating, clunky experience whenever I tried to deal with Excel formulas.
In the end, for any real task, I always found myself reaching for my MacBook anyway.
The Foldable Sweet Spot
With a modern foldable like the Fold 8, I finally have the best of both worlds: a compact phone to carry around in my pocket, and an almost 8-inch tablet ready the exact second I need it. I honestly haven't been this happy with a tech purchase in years.
A Quick Word on Apple vs. Samsung
Let me be clear: Samsung isn't objectively "better" than Apple, and Apple isn't objectively better than Samsung. They just target completely different end users with different priorities:
- Apple is still unbeatable out of the box. It just works, seamlessly and with zero friction for the general user.
- Samsung, on the other hand, requires a bit of tweaking, optimizing, and customizing to reach its full potential. But once you set it up to fit your workflow, it can even outperform the iPhone itself.
I'm saying this as someone who still loves Apple and relies heavily on their hardware. My current daily setup is a MacBook + Dual Apple Studio Displays paired with the Samsung Z Fold 8, and I haven't enjoyed using my tech setup this much in a very long time.
P.S. I also ended up swapping my Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 and Galaxy Buds4 Pro. Coming from Apple's top-tier wearables, I went in with realistic expectations, but I’ve been extremely and pleasantly surprised by how well they perform.
