Show-and-Tell Webserver performance measured on a Raspberry Pi 4B

Post image

Benchmarks for server application development have long been in use to measure the performance of web servers running on large, powerful servers (such as TechEmpower FrameworkBenchmarks).

One of those projects recently did a full round on a Raspberry Pi 4B, the results can be found here: HTTP Arena - RPI

As expected, Rust, Go, and Zig are at the top of the list, but there's also an entry for C#. Java, as expected, is at the very bottom.

Did you also code GenHTTP? :)

I didn't realise there were so many HTTP servers out there. In my webdev days there was only Apache and then years later Nginx.

Cool site.

Been watching a series on YouTube about a $12 / month VM servers so the Rust result does not surprise me - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZNKBU8nSW0s

Python traditionally comes last and that was a bit of a surprise given the number of Python based web servers I came across commercially.

Interesting to see the cost / performance comparison for a new Pi vs a year of low cost hosting. Hopefully the Pi costs could drop next year πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚

As a Ruby engineer, I won’t stand for this erasure. Python only comes second to last!
