Well at least you have an excuse for that high blood pressure reading

u/AutomateAway 2d ago

allergy shots but maybe it’ll trigger a reaction lmao

Liquid github. You're very allergic.

i've used many ci tools, and GHA has so far been my favorite WHEN IT WORKS. the fact that i still experience interruptions when using self-hosted runners is frustrating as hell.

the fact that this stalls self-hosted runners too is pretty insane

The whole concept and working eith is so cool but holy shit the performance is absymal.

My company is contemplating moving from gitlab to GitHub. I'm a big fan of the gitlab ci runners and how we self host them.

What is it you like about actions specifically?

Random mandatory breaks?

I moved companies from using GitLab to GitHub and would give anything to have GitLab back. GitHub is hot garbage.

I feel the exact opposite in regards to Gitlab. They are fixing it, but man it’s such a buggy platform.

Last week they had multiple incidents, and poor runner scheduling when it was up. Gitlab spent most of the week saying it failed to run our jobs.

In fairness I haven’t seen this recently, but over the last two years I’ve experienced multiple Gitlab bugs where the git diff changes on an MR are wrong. Sometimes it’s missing commits, and sometimes it repeats work. I also see bugs with selecting code for a comment not working, and sometimes it auto-refreshes and you lose your draft comment.

The UI on Gitlab is dreadful, and confusing.

After years of hearing lots of praise about Gitlab, I was surprised to try it and find how poor it is.

I think people are talking about self hosted gitlab in this context.

i haven't used gitlab, so i can't speak to comparisons there. but the jenkins <-> github integration - while functional - felt like i had to do a whole bunch of extra work & steps to get what i can do either completely out of the box with GHA or with very very minimal yaml.

their yaml dsl is a lot easier to grok than jenkins' groovy dsl

The only reason to move from Gitlab to GitHub is cost

A PSA that self-hosted GHA is not truly self-hosted. Otherwise GHA outages would not affect your own hosted CI

u/SanJJ_1 2d ago

Lol why does it show all green for today the 19th lmao? Crazy how these incident boards are so fake lmao wtf

12

u/spongeloaf 2d ago

Yeah the cute green bars don't seem to track every day that I push a commit and then the PR page hangs for five minutes.

16

u/frankster 2d ago

gitlab seems to have been shitting the bed today as well!

When does GitHub Actions is up again become the default news item?

u/ao_zame 2d ago

I'm glad I just migrated everything to a self-hosted Forgejo instance

24

u/Zanion 2d ago

Yeah, their incompetence has speedran my efforts to just go fully self hosted

8

u/_mattmc3_ 2d ago

We just did a similar migration, and couldn’t be happier. Forgjo actions are mostly compatible with GitHub Actions, but we did have to fork/rewrite a few of the helper actions repos GitHub provided. The only big thing we were missing is a proper Projects API. There’s a PR that’s been stalled for awhile. The strict anti-AI development governance is a bit heavy handed and seems to slow down some key features, but I’ll take that over GitHub’s mismanagement and outages. If what forgejo has matches what you use in GitHub, self hosting feels like a no-brainer at this point.

u/Top3879 2d ago

Same here. And while it's obviously not the game thing I can proudly say my Forgejo Actions have never been down once.

u/Somepotato 2d ago

I've been weighing the pros and cons of having a self hosted forgejo instance for awhile now, with repos mirrored on azure devops/github for resiliency. How are you liking it so far? Their governance structure and hard rules have me concerned for the long term life of the project.

u/afl_ext 2d ago

Im also considering this and so can you elaborate on what is worrying you?

8

u/moh_kohn 2d ago

Cool thing where enterprise services now offer a whole 2 9s of reliability

13

u/cellularcone 2d ago

AI first!

13

u/b1ak3 2d ago

The vibes were off today

3

u/miversen33 2d ago

We're literally talking about setting up ci/cd around github actions and I have been advising them we need to self host because of this shit.

The company is so worried (rightfully so) about potential supply chain attacks that they are still ok paying for actions even with this shit.

It's wild man

8

u/xnachtmahrx 2d ago

It still impacts the selfhosted runners. That is the fun part.

5

u/flightsin 2d ago

These days I can't even browse source code on GitHub without it shitting the bed. Can't imagine it's fun using it for actual work.

2

u/targrimm 2d ago

38 minutes I waiting for a single action to run, which takes 7seconds.

3

u/_souphanousinphone_ 2d ago

Just use it as an excuse to take a break. Don’t turn down an unexpected gift.

2

u/ClocktowerGnome 2d ago

GitHub actions don’t have a single 9 of reliability. They’re at 99.65%

27

u/ImAStupidFace 2d ago

I'm all for clowning on GHA but I'm gonna need you to count the 9s in "99.65%" again

28

u/UnexpectedAnanas 2d ago

You're right to call me out on that. There are actually three 9s in "99.65%". I didn't look before the decimal like I should have. I'm making a note of this for my future reference. It won't happen again.

4

u/marrsd 2d ago

Must have 4 years experience orchestrating a dozen AI agents to produce 9% up time. Sounds about right for the enterprise.

2

u/theFirstHaruspex 1d ago

guys don't worry, I vibe coded an open source alternative to github actions for a time such as this check it out here

u/Personal_Rough6944 1d ago

Thats why I could not merge yesterday lol..

Water is wet.

1

u/CherryLongjump1989 1d ago

No problems here with my self-hosted Forgejo.

1

u/ankercrank 2d ago

I was wondering why my PRs were seemingly stuck.

1

u/First_Inspection_478 2d ago

I’ve tried using tools like preloop(https://github.com/preloopdev/preloop), act, localci. Both have their warts but it actually doesnt work too bad. Preloop seems to have much better fidelity than the other two and can update your checks but is also abit heavier(needs the full github vm image iirc). Localci and act works great if your actions are supported.

Just in time for the work week

1

u/siddhant30 2d ago

github and its shenanigans, crazy that it happens on monday

1

u/jinks26 2d ago

You can install a runner on your own device. We did this for building a unity app on a spare pc that stays on all the time.

24

u/First_Inspection_478 2d ago

Self-hosted runners are also often affected since webhooks are down

7

u/NotUniqueOrSpecial 2d ago

That doesn't fix the problem when the problem is delivering work to workers.

1

u/thelehmanlip 2d ago

Don't worry githubstatus.com says there was no downtime with actions today so it's probably fine. /s

When will GitHub switch to using AI agents for development so these outages stop happening?

(edit: I guess Poe’s law is in full effect here)

14

u/grady_vuckovic 2d ago

Plot twist: The outages are caused by using AI agents for development!

8

u/ironykarl 2d ago

I think they're getting ready to start in roughly four or five years ago.

If you're asking about an agent-first dev cycle, I think that's coming up the pike two years ago.

Good troll if that's what you were doing, though

2

u/androbat 2d ago

It was a wry commentary on software quality and reliability going down the tubes since AI entered the equation.
