They were already behind in polling before the ad. I fully believe they don't care about winning, they just want to be as hurtful and ugly and vicious as they can for the rest of the race.

Nah, empathy is required to relate to people that are in different situations from yourself, not when they're mirror images of you.

He's only getting blowback from people who were never going to vote for him.

Trump mobilized the low propensity, "white rage," voter, and Republicans are doing poorly because those voters are at this point feeling like maybe Trump isn't going to solve their grievances, so what's the point?

This is exactly what motivates them. Objectively, Ramaswamy is a psychopath fir running this, but it was the best move he could have made. He was down by 4 points on average and I would bet this pushes him over to the top.
