Possible Paywall Dem’s Odds Spike to All-Time High After MAGA Candidate’s Disaster Ad
https://www.thedailybeast.com/dems-odds-spike-to-all-time-high-after-maga-candidates-disaster-ad867

You can see why they thought this ad might have worked, since Republicans no longer have a problem with rapists and pedos, why not use the enabling wife of one?

u/ked_man 11h ago
What’s wild is her mom talking about how she lies. She’s been estranged from her since she was 12. The “lying” she is talking about is Amy telling people about the sexual abuse from her step father. Absolutely abhorrent that they ran an ad of a terrible mother talking about how her child lied about her rape from her step dad.

And her stepdad was a fugitive until his death, if she really thought he was innocent, why not go prove it in court?

Victim of a narcissistic mother here. This isn't wild to me in the slightest, nor is the idea Republicans would buy into it. My family is basically a matriarchal mini cult. When my cousin came out about being the victim of SA from her father, my grandmother (the cult leader) started shit-talking her for years AND told her sister and mother that the rest of us felt the same way (I sure as hell didn't, but I found out when her sister accused me of attacking her for being bi... which isn't something I did but definitely was a line grandmother pulled for a while). Come to find out my Aunt was an SA victim from her father, and Grandmother papered over that as long as she could as well. Keeping up appearance of a "perfect family" mattered more than protecting her kids.
There's a significantly higher rate of this kind of shit in conservative families. Generational trauma cycles are a massive fucking problem that we aren't addressing.
12
u/porscheblack Pennsylvania 8h ago
It's upsetting how apparently common this is. The book Paper Girl talks about the author's niece who went through this exact same experience. She ended up being disowned by her mother who sided with the stepdad and insisted it was all made up.

I believe they confuse being wealthy with being a good leader, or intelligent.
To be frank, the very personality traits that lead someone to backstab their way up the greasy pole and become wealthy are not the traits that comprise good civic leadership.
Good leaders have honesty, integrity, empathy, and enough charisma to sell the public on good ideas. They view themselves as public servants.
CEO's tend to be narcissists who took advantage of every person and situation they could to reach where they are. They believe every transaction should have a winner and a loser, and they believe they themselves personally should always be the winner.
The two are not the same.
Sadly for the USA, the Republican party spent the last four decades selling the idea that government is a business, and therefore should be run by those ruthless narcissists in it for themselves. And also that lassiez faire capitalism and deregulation are good, while redistribution of wealth is bad, allowing the vast majority of the fruits of labor in the USA to be sequestered into ever fewer hands.
84
u/Denmarkian 12h ago
There's also the religious angle where being rich means you are blessed by God and thus must be a good person.
The converse belief is that if you're poor you must be being punished by God, and that is what many Evangelicals claim to justify their lack of charity, at least when pressed about it.81
u/wheatgivesmeshits Texas 12h ago
Evangelicals are a stain on Jesus' legacy. They have corrupted his message to the point that they believe the opposite of his teachings.

The funny thing about that whole "government is a business" thing is that it's such a farce. Any well-run business tries to grow income as the primary goal. Radical slashing of labor/expenses is the desperation move in a failing business. The economic GOP playbook is to radically cut income (taxes), to more radically cut expenses (spending, except for defense) to compensate, and borrow to make up the gaps. No business has ever succeeded in the history of ever with that strategy.
26
u/donnerpartytaconight 11h ago
Back when I sold my last business, my primary concern was succession and making sure the work force I spent a ton of effort on training and mentoring would have jobs they wanted to come to and were properly compensated for.
It was emotionally (and personally financially) draining and difficult but on my last day it was like saying good bye to family and I got to retire at 38.
Broke my heart to find out that it only took two years for the new owner to completely botch it when they were basically handed a turnkey operation that was run by staff that had agency and ownership.
Luckily the staff basically started up a few smaller companies and are doing well working with each other. I still consult at some of the new places to keep in touch.
But the extract value vs create value thing makes me recoil when I look at how people think a business and market should be run. Everyone works hard, people are not resources, they are people.

The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.- Douglas Adams from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

You’ve got the mindset backwards in my opinion. In their view, it is because they are wealthy that they are intelligent and good by default. Their racism puts a ceiling on how intelligent and how good, but that’s how you end up with minorities they’ll tolerate as “one of the good ones”. The reasoning isn’t any deeper than that. They aren’t misunderstanding because there’s nothing more to it to understand, their foundational reasoning is just completely off base. It’s perfectly logical if you see wealth how they do, however.

My fan theory with absolutely 0 research is that the Republican party is in a death spiral/race to the bottom.
As a 30 year old, my politically active life has been watching Republicans somehow devolve from Bush to Trump, any moderates have since left the party and the GOP has been reaching to the more and more extreme right to fill those numbers.
These days, the only Republicans are the billionaires or the true believers, who have then taught their children to be true believers, and so on so forth.
They're becoming a parody of a parody of a parody, to the point the only people left are the racist morons.

It’s Ohio. If you dive down the internet rabbit hole and start looking at interviews with Ohio voters you will understand that the term Rust Belt refers to their brains.
From what I can see a big chunk of Ohio has never truly rebounded from the loss of all the automobile manufacturing jobs that left the state years ago. And generations of people are still bitter about not being able to deal with that.
50
u/SonOfMcGee 12h ago
Rust Belt folks speak very proudly about their brave ancestors, who moved their families great distances for strange new types of work opportunities in strange new locations. Whether it was homesteaders in the 1800s or more recent workers that came during the Industrial Revolution or WWII factory/automotive boom.
Then they tell you how they’re entitled to the same job their parents and grandparents had, in the same location. No new towns, no new types of businesses, no new types of people. Their comfort zone is a fortress, and the next politician better promise to make everything like it was back in the ‘50s.

If economics truly motivated Rust Belt voters, they wouldn’t support the GOP.
What happened to the Rust Belt is sad. I can understand the anger over corporate deindustrialization and the offshoring of jobs abroad.
But the GOP pushed all those policies! While Third Way Democrats deserve much criticism, the GOP championed all of those policies before, during, and after the 1990s. The GOP have idolized the free market and corporate elitism since before Hoover. Anybody with a brain whose angry about the economic state of the Rust Belt should despise capitalism and embrace socialism or at least a return to New Deal policies.
They won’t give socialists the time of day, but latched on fast to the Birther candidate who demonized immigrants. I can only assume racism, sexism, and a heap of misinformation actually motivate most of that area’s conservative voters.

In todays news:
Democrat Joe Boringuy has faced campaign trouble today as he has not publicly denounced Agusto Pinochet.
His opponent Asgoth the blood drinker, states that his failure to denounce the Chilean dictator shows how Boringuy must support the Caverns of Death.
Boringuy explained he hasn't denounced Pinochet because he had no idea how a dictator from Chile in the 70's had any barring on the race today but said he denounced him.
Asgoth the blood drinker then claimed that this late denunciation was extremely suspicious and seems to only have been done under durress.
In further news Asgoth the blood drinker said he will not leave his membership as the vice chairperson of the "Murder puppies for blood to drink" association saying he will only use his position to do good in the organization. Despite no evidence that this has ever happened voters seemed to think that he was being honest and would give him the chance to prove himself. His current approval rating in the Republican party stands at 75%.

It's not enough to realize that this ad is disgraceful and offensive to all matters of good taste. I mean, it is, but that's not enough.
It's also not enough to know that her mother is lying in this video, and that Acton's accusations were more than that, and that investigation found credible evidence and that the mother and stepfather fled the jurisdiction to avoid further investigation. Her mother hasn't seen Acton since 1978.
You also have to also realize that in their opinion, this was their best attack strategy.
A proper assessment of what is going on here is that resorting to baseless attacks that insult the dignity of victims, and the intelligence and empathy of voters, is their chosen and primary strategy.
Note also that no policy is discussed in this video. So not sharing their policy goals and shameful and morally bereft attack ads are the message they're selling. On purpose. Because they think it's their best idea.
59
u/Azoththemerciless 12h ago

I didn't see the initial ad, but I've heard the gist of it, which uses Acton's estranged mother to claim that Acton is lying about her step-father raping her. The step-father was in fact charged for child rape and fled to avoid prosecution.
Edit: Evandena in the responses to my post found the full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJRXA4SywEE
It doesn't delve much into why Acton is supposedly a "liar" though it says she lied about a tent, which obviously means nothing absent of any context. Once you take a minute to gather any context the video is about the scummiest attack ad I may have ever seen.

It’s insane a rapist can beat the prosecution by just driving a few hours.
It’s pretty disgusting that consequences for sex crimes can be so easily avoided, and a sign our system needs serious reform. I understand state resources are often tight. But our idiotic tax code and social priorities enable this too. u/atarikrishna 12h ago
No, none whatsoever. The acquisition and consolidation of power is all they care about.

Donald Trump just gave a speech on stage with Ted Nugent. Vivek platform an estranged mother who chose her pedophile husband over her own children. The republican party is the party of pedophiles and im done pretending like they aren't

I think the fact that the GOP thought this was a good idea for an ad really goes to show how divorced from the human condition they are. If I see an ad where a mother calls their child a liar who shouldn't be elected, I don't side with the mother. Most people don't. Most people would think the mother is a bad mother, nor that the child was a bad child.
37
u/americanherbman 10h ago
agree but you forgot to mention the part where the child was removed from the mothers custody at 13, because her stepfather was raping her
28
u/awanderingcripple 9h ago
As well as the mother SIDING WITH THE RAPIST.
8
u/Mateorabi 9h ago
The cognitive dissonance is probably requiring her brain to think her daughter a liar in order to protect itself from a painful truth that she invited a rapist into her home.
For the mom it’s quite pitiful. For the candidate eager to take advantage of the mom’s mental state it’s reprehensible.

Imagine running for office and having your adviser say ‘hey I got an idea, let’s get an endorsement from a mother who lost custody of her child because the child was being raped by her husband. And have her denounce her daughter and stand by the child rapist.’ And he approved it.

I saw a comment yesterday that this ad was meant to appeal to estranged parents who “just don’t understand” why their children won’t talk to them. There are a lot of them right now, and a lot of them are MAGA. My own mother is one of them.
Of course, Ramaswamy doesn’t need to persuade those voters, they’re already voting for him. He probably was deluded in thinking there were non-MAGA estranged parents, but I don’t think there are a ton of those. Most non-MAGA parents (i.e., normal people), if their children stopped talking to them, would reach out with care and concern and try to mend the relationship. The MAGA parent just gets indignant and defensive and plays the victim, just like they do about everything.
So that’s probably why the ad backfired.

It depends on the circumstances, but in this case specifically, I don’t see how anyone could reasonably side with the mother. The authorities had enough probable cause to charge the stepfather. He then fled the state to avoid prosecution, and the mother chose to stay with him and give up her children. All of that is indisputable. It’s a matter of public record. And that alone is enough to side with the daughter.

Liberals don't like pedophile protectors. Seems quite stupid that Ramaswamy would think putting a bitchy old woman whose children were taken from her in front of a camera to whine about one of those children, now an adult, who has made a career for herself despite her biological parents, was a good idea.
But then again, it's a out of touch rich narcissistic MAGA bandwagoneer we're talking about so I reckon cluelessness is par for the course.

Given the inaccuracy of polling outcomes since 2016, no one can trust any poll or odds maker. Show up and vote. Register your family and friends and have them vote. Nothing is final until the last ballot is counted.

Why is mentioning the odds on Kalshi or Polymarket even relevant at all to the article. WHY? someone tell me WHY?

u/DblGravy 12h ago
The candidate's mother is desperate to cover her ass for siding with a sexual predator over her own child.

if Vivek was white he'd be polling ahead and a safe lock to win Ohio even with all his awful campaigning. there is very much a committed group of MAGA faithful that hate him because he's brown and his tech background

While I hope this is true, Daily Beast is one of the worst sites for news. We’re using Kalshi as a source now? The “federally regulated trading” site that is certainly not betting? Insider trading allegations have already been discovered by that soldier who helped apprehend Venezuelan President Maduro. For a crooked administration who is looking to fix an election, this seems like a great grift for them.

This needs a r/titlegore tag. There is no POSSIBLE way anyone who discusses politics seriously would speak of "Odds". That idea absolutely disgusts me in a democracy. It's all determined. There is nothing predictive about democracy in action.

Maga: protect women
Also Maga: make ad saying victim of abuse is lying.. when theres proof evidence otherwise

The daily beast is not a reliable news source. I get it aligns with what the general political environment of Reddit but it is low quality hoping drivel. The equivalent on the right is and should be demonized. I really don't like seeing articles from them posted here.
5
u/FlashesandFlickers 10h ago
Yeah, this one is using Kalshi as their source, as if the numbers there mean anything

Like 25% of all posts on r/politics are from the daily beast. It's lame as hell.
We're almost as bad (well, alright not even close) as the conservative sub.

If they lose in November, they can blame the guy who ran that ad. Or they can blame the top of their ticket. Either way, they are cooked.

In previous years of "normal" politics, this ad would have been released by some little known PAC. The Republican candidate would go to the press and say "I don't condone this." The situation - and therefore the ad - would get free press coverage. The Republican would appear as a hero of women and truth....
All while the whole thing was coordinated by the Republican's campaign behind the scenes the whole time.
This crop of MAGA politicians is too stupid to know how to be cunning.

Since when did we start relying on Kalshi to predict the odds and treating those bets like official polls? Get these gambling addicts out of politics.

Stop trusting the news and polls, go out and vote. Don't fucking screw this up, Americans. Help others vote too.

u/ImADataCenter 7h ago
this won’t change a single voters mind. why do we pretend political ad campaigns do a single thing? if they were gonna vote R or D no TV commercial will ever change that. most of these independents they think they are going after are just embarrassed republicans that will still vote R come election and dems will be left scratching their heads why they lost again. or not really care since they are just the controlled opposition party anyway.
