Prior to becoming a traitor, Benedict Arnold was a hero having been instrumental in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, leading the American forces in the Battle of Saratoga and several other campaigns. He was considered one of the American's best and most ferocious commanders. Although treason is treason and Arnold was without a doubt a traitor for planning on turning West Point over to the British, he had a somewhat legitimate beef with the Continental Congress that led him to switch sides.
