Some government agency published a report saying eating less meat would help climate change and republicans spent two weeks screaming, crying, and throwing up about how “global elites” were going to force them all to eat bugs.

I found out about that while meeting up with a fella I grew up with for dinner at a Mongolian grill! When I went to fill my plate, he boomed out "They can't make me eat the bugs!" in that very nice quite restaurant.

I'd been reading about the new food grade crickets at the time, so just assumed that's what he was talking about. Then was massively disappointed I couldn't find the crickets in the meat section so I could try them.

Whole rest of the meal was him trying to convince me that the evil gubbermint was really gonna force us to eat bugs. While I blinked and asked basic logic questions like "So what do the cattle ranchers say about that? Because they tend to get into armed standoffs with the government over grazing rights, so I don't think anyone is stupid enough to take away all their cows." or "And the fast food chains are fine with this? They're not lobbying against it?"

Within a month it switched to "that was a really funny joke you're just not cool enough to get!" and forever afterwards made him irrationally angry. Like dude, I'm not the one who keeps putting signs on your back that say "Kick me!" to make you look foolish in public!

My cooking kinda sucks and I'm usually broke, but I quit getting coaxed out for meals by that guy after he said "I don't think food service workers deserve a living wage" near closing time and the entire busy kitchen suddenly went dead silent. Like I assume folks serving him food get the urge to recreate scenes from Fight Club before handing it over.

Side note, he thinks eating fresh produce of any kind makes him sick. But potato is somehow magically different from the evil of dirt-grown things like carrots and other vegetables.

Yet my conservative GM is actually clamping down expecting us to clock in early for our shift so we are at “our post” at the exact start of our shift, is threatening getting rid of the fan he got me to keep cool (chronic sweater) if we don’t turn it off at close, and has his own preconceived notions about people who use pronouns in their resume.

Seems like it’s one party trying to control us…
