Couldn’t imagine the bottom of the barrel left supporting this

1.9k

u/Life_Bet8956 Virginia Sep 21 '26

It's people that were heavily into the vitriolic discourse of the late 2010s and early 2020s that are in way too deep to admit they were wrong.

1.5k

u/jaylotw Sep 21 '26

That's just it.

The people left are the ones who are too afraid to admit that they've been fooled.

They've had plenty of safe off-ramps, but every time they have chosen to not take them. At this point, they know jumping ship will expose them, so they double down.

They'll never change.

708

u/LT_Dangle Sep 21 '26

Has anyone considered that maybe they’re not afraid that they were wrong, but not smart enough to have still not figured out that they were conned?

279

u/Spektr44 Sep 21 '26

So many people are still captured by Fox News and their ilk. Those outlets still provide the talking points that allow the viewer never to challenge their views. Inflation happening right now? Still the lingering effect of Biden, goddamn him! Gas prices high? Iran just playing games before the election, no worries. Yes these are things I've heard unironically spoken just last week.

201

u/Geno0wl Sep 21 '26

Yes these are things I've heard unironically spoken just last week.

Heard somebody recently say "just imagine how much worse it would be if Kamala was elected!"

They will never learn.

210

u/Bentendo_64 Tennessee Sep 21 '26

About a week ago, one of my neighbors said to me "Kamala would be handling the Iran war so much worse than Trump is".

The thought that the war wouldn't have even happened if Kamala was president didn't even cross his mind. The lack of any form of critical thought truly is astounding.

47

u/masterlich Sep 21 '26

I've seen a lot of shit over the last ten years that has blown my mind, but this... this really takes the cake.

48

u/Chaotic-Catastrophe Sep 21 '26

It really shows how they perceive the world as a whole. Things don't happen for reasons. Cause and effect are fake. Things only happen because of God's WillTM or fate or some other magical bullshit. We're not at war with Iran because Trump intentionally started it with them for no reason. We're at war with Iran because that was always going to happen and nobody knows why. So if Harris were President right now, obviously the Iran war would still be happening. There is nothing she could have said or done in advance to prevent it.

Yes. Some of these posters should torture themselves and watch Fox & Friends, then Fox from The Five through Hannity.

It is difficult to overstate just how relentless (and, unfortunately effective) their coordinated propaganda is. Their impossibly stupid rube viewers - who already relish feeling persecuted - just bask in anger and outrage and persecution. All the fault of...

AOC, Bernie, Obama, AOC, Mamdani, Pelosi, Biden, "Socialism", AOC, "Trans for everybody", Al Gore/"The Green Scam", George Soros (they vote to cut his taxes btw), AOC, and of course AOC.

It is absolutely relentless and Trump most definitely has a hard floor in the mid-high 20s that it will never break through because of Fox et al propaganda.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. They’ve replaced critical thinking with just allowing Fox News/OAN/Newsmax to tell them what to think.

I would give some of them that.

By now, though...unless you have actual, verified mental handicaps, there's just no way to say "I didn't realize."

There's no real excuse any more.

75

u/DeusCanis420 Sep 21 '26

I truly believe that if we tested all of the current self-proclaimed MAGA we would find that the vast majority do indeed have mental handicaps.

56

u/LT_Dangle Sep 21 '26

Some might. But I think a lot of them likely have personality disorders like antisocial personality disorder.

20

u/vixen-mixin Sep 21 '26

My aunt s dating a MAGA guy and she's the kind of woman who believes what her partner believes. I would believe she has some mental handicaps, but i'm not sure about him. Hes a fucking asshole and i hate him but he's not mentally handicapped from what i've seen

They won't change or admit their wrong but I've already seen them pivot to "both sides are the same". Which is as far they will ever go. Deluding themselves into thinking things would have been just as bad with a Democrat in the office so they don't really need to take any responsibility because it was inevitable - in their minds at least.

There is a vast portion of the population that has no clue what is going on in the world besides the seasonal sportsball.

92

u/MadRaymer Sep 21 '26

And they apply that same sports mindset to politics. Republicans are the team they root for, no matter how bad the team is doing. Even if the team is fucking them over, that's still their team.

Expecting them to switch to the other team would be like trying to get a Packers fan to root for the Vikings. Never going to happen.

33

u/Don_Gato1 Sep 21 '26

Nebraska Senate candidate Dan Osborn may have put it best:

“Billy Bob in f**king Red Cloud, Nebraska, who lives next door to the f**king Trump store as you pull into town and is waving the Trump flag … all he knows is he’s like on the winning team,” a speaker said in audio obtained by the Omaha World-Herald. “He’s been so effective at taking Billy Bob and his wife Mary Jane or Mary Jo and telling them, look we’re winning. You’re on the winning team. And that’s all they care about, because their lives probably suck so f**king much.”

12

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox Sep 21 '26

and because they do it they assume everyone else works the same.

i was raised in a family that lie cheated and stole, their mentality was to get one over on everyone else before they did it to you, they truly thought every one cheated the system and other people as much as they did, and when they found someone who didn't they 1) assumed they were a minority and 2) assumed that person was dumb and didn't know how to "play the game" so to speak, so they deserved to be take advantage of

i notice a lot of right wingers have these mindsets, they think they are part of the group who knows how the world REALLY works and everyone else is an idiot and deserves to be taken advantage of

If you look at polling on who’s responsible for current inflation, you’ll find your answer. The echo chamber feeding these folks lies has 30% convinced none of our current economic problems are Trump’s fault, so it doesn’t matter that America is objectively having a bad time, they’ll say they approve of how Trump is handling things, he was just dealt a bad hand by the last guy. That none of this tariff regime existed under Biden does not factor in to their calculus.

37

u/steemSTEM Sep 21 '26

Trump was dealt a bad hand by the guy in charge at the start of covid. I'm sure he really has a bone to pick with that guy who really ruined the economy. That prior president is a real dipshit. Oh wait, that's also him. Damn.

23

If all you ever listen to on news or politics is Fox News, you think the Iran War was completely necessary and temporary, pricing is just the fault of the necessary Iran War and Biden policies, and in fact, Trump has done a lot to lower prices like pricing transparency in hospital/prescriptions. If you give them more time, they'll definitely fix it.

Personally, I love all the Abbott ads in Texas complaining about how bad everything is when his party has been in control decades and he has been governor for 12 years.

All he did was remind people that he lied about the last two checks he claimed he was going to send out.

19

u/ebkalderon Sep 21 '26

True, but I think that's a pretty minor factor among his core base (if it even is one at all). IMO, the real driving force behind Trump's falling approval numbers has gotta be the rising cost of gas at the pumps. Remember, these people don't care about any political issue unless it affects them directly.

That, and remember Mark Twain: "It is easier to trick a man, than to convince him he has been tricked." The Republican voters don't want to believe that they were duped, that they made a stupid decision, because that attacks their egos. So they double and triple down on the stupidity.

Themselves.

They can do no wrong in their own eyes; they chose him; therefore he can do no wrong in their eyes. These are people who, at any given moment, believe whatever they need to believe to justify doing what they wanted to do anyway. It's bad faith, in other words.

The worse the leader they identify with, the more destructive the actions they support, the fiercer they will hold fast tot that moral absolute, even if they have to twist reality and morality around it. The alternative is to confront the consequences of their own choices and actions. There are off ramps ("discovering" that Trump betrayed them, for example), but those only reduce the hard core by attrition, and they do not imply an actual change of heart, because they merely represent a shift into a new bad faith narrative of victim-hood to replace the old one.

The economic impact is finally catching up and biting some boomers in the ass, in my experience. I visited my parents over the weekend and heard my dad respond to some Trump news story with “what a frickin’ idiot”. I was actually kind of shocked, my dad is an idiot and voted for him every chance he could.

He spent the weekend complaining about the war, gas prices, grocery prices, etc. I mean, far too little too late, but it was nice seeing my dad act sane and seem to care about my future for a minute.

27

u/jhoosi Sep 21 '26

Sadly, it always takes something affecting them personally before they have a change of heart, and even then I feel like the change is only temporary. I suspect as soon as the economic situation improves, they'd be back to their voting ways.

19

u/Michael_DeSanta Sep 21 '26

Unfortunately, I suspect the same. I won’t let him forget this period, though. Before Trump, they were able to retire in a cushy, large beach house, buy new cars and boats, travel the world…all while being extremely financially stable until long past the average lifespan.

Now they’re having to adhere to a tight budget again, having to help my brother out of crippling debt/health issues, and paying out the ass for my grandparents’ care. Life isn’t quite as fun as his conservative buddies promised.

It really is like a religion. That's all they have. Their identity, who they are, is directly tied to it.

They are so heavily invested in the ideology that it would completely shatter their worldview, and their perception of who they even are, to admit or even recognize that their leader could be wrong. They have to believe it.

The connection between prejudice and authoritarianism lay at the heart of our analysis of Trump’s supporters, and the survey strongly supported it. How strongly? The correlation between RWA Scale scores and prejudice equalled .856, which is as close to perfection (1.00) as you are likely to ever see in social science. To put it another way, suppose you decided to hold a dance for the 100 most prejudiced white people in your community, along with the 100 most authoritarian ones. (Who knows why you would want to? We do not.) Would you need to print 200 invitations? No, about 120 should do it, since most of the people who are one will also be the other. There is about an 80 percent overlap.

...

“most amazing discovery you never heard of,” that you can explain most prejudice in terms of authoritarianism. So social scientists have not been crying wolf for all these years. There truly is a big, very bad wolf at our collective doors, and this metaphoric evil snarls such intolerance, discrimination, and victimization that it not only injures its immediate victims, but also shakes our democratic society to its core. Knowingly or unknowingly, prejudiced people bring into the voting booth something of even greater danger to everyone’s freedom and our country’s very existence: authoritarianism. As we explained in our earlier chapters, the most prejudiced people in America were likely drawn to Trump because he told them their prejudices were justified. But they connected with him and with one another on more than their attitudes toward minorities, for the showman at the rallies was a megalomaniac and demagogue driven to dominate everyone in the world. He did not campaign on a platform of overthrowing democracy, obviously, but he did sanctify prejudice. And the crowd that responded to his evil message was full of authoritarian supporters yearning for a mighty leader to fight their enemies and protect them.

30% is an insanely high number and it should worry everyone how he manages to keep the votes of the single cell organisms.

166

u/SoglinBottomBoy Sep 21 '26

This is a great time to remind yourself of The Keyes Constant also known as the Crazification Factor. 30% of our population will always be batshit insane.

96

u/IrascibleOcelot Sep 21 '26

Which aligns really closely with the percentage of the population that are authoritarian followers. About 30% of every human population wants someone to tell them what to do. They want a dictator, king, or emperor to sweep in and “fix the problems.” And they will never, ever turn on their chosen “strongman,” no matter how bad things get. So 30% is about the floor of what a wannabe dictator will hit. Hitler still had 28% approval when he was dead and Germany was a smoking ruin.

So while 30% is still too high in any sane world, it’s also a really good sign in the insane one we live in.

12

u/Melicor Sep 22 '26

That's why it's important to implement systems that require actual majorities to implement policy and change. Our current Congress is basically at the mercy of that 30% because of structural flaws like the filibuster and gerrymandering. The Senate itself is fundamentally a problem because a senator from Wyoming representing 600,000 people has the same power as one from CA that represents 30 million. It's just fucking broken.

The broken senate has lead to the broken Supreme Court because they're the only barrier to the President's appointments.

Everyone should have a voice. But our current system amplifies and empowers certain groups, such as rural white Christians.

That's an understandable response, but even among the worst presidents and the most failed global leaders in history, they typically manage to keep their polling in the 20's. Probably after the midterms, if it's a Dem landslide...

Expect Republicans to propose some insane thing like "we will stop exporting all oil and begin drilling all our public lands" and when Democrats say no- it will just be pitched as "the Democrats don't want your gas prices to go down".

Yeah, there are people like my stepdad and my uncle who will ignore everything he does because they are absolutely 100% convinced that if a Democrat were president things would be worse. There is a huge amount of people in this country who simply don't pay attention to politics or they support Trump and don't care what he does because "it's part of his genius plan and they are just going to weather it until prosperity happens." or they fall into my first statement of "still better than a democrat because it would be worse and they hate America.".

Roughly 78 million evangelical Christians in the US or about 23% of the total population and while not all are ride or die Trump/Republican the vast majority are.

So you probably won’t see his approval rating dip much below that, as the republicans successfully co-opted this type of Christianity over 40+ years ago in a way that many of them do not segregate Republican Party alignment from their religious alignment, making it in many cases, unbreakable.

This is 100% a hot take, but it's a hot take based on having two nationalities and having lived in 3 different countries with different politics:

At any given time, 10-30% of any given electorate is ready and willing to implement straight up fascism (under whatever name it has locally). If the economy is doing okay, the social elevator works, there is a decent social safety net, it's 10%. When those break down, it slides towards 30%. From there, it only takes convincing some low information idiots to be in range of winning elections.

12

u/POEness Sep 21 '26

This is accurate. Personally I believe roughly 30% of human brains simply don't form correctly. That 30% is too consistent throughout history - it has to be essentially our defectiveness rate.

Even the worst leaders in history typically have a floor in the 20%-30% range. The fact that it's that low for someone whose entire M.O. is using a cult of personality to fail upwards is actually a good sign for the future of the United States. If you go issue-by-issue, the disapproval is actually shockingly high and blows several record disapproval numbers out of the water.

President Donald Trump's approval rating dropped below 30 percent for the first time across both his White House terms Monday, as the midterms draw closer.

The new poll, from American Research Group, conducted September 16-20 among 1,100 American adults, showed the president with a 29 percent overall approval rating, with positive views on the economy at 26 percent.

A lot of people in the comments are claiming that's way too high, but this is actually significant. There's a political theory called the 33% threshold. In a nutshell, it's pretty much that no matter how polarizing they are, a populist strong-man leader can easily hold onto a 33% approve rating, as that's roughly their ride or die base.

After Watergate, Nixon only fell to 24%, proving that no matter how badly a President fucks up, they'll always have a loyal base.

Polling only drops below 33% if they've truly fucked up. Trump's approval finally hitting the 20s signifies that he's starting to lose some of his ride-or-die base. As things continue to get worse, we'll definitely see it get closer to the Nixon level.

90

u/threevaluelogic Sep 21 '26

Crazy that what Nixon did is beaten by trump multiple times a day.

u/PossMom Sep 21 '26

26

u/Sturmgeshootz Sep 21 '26

Only 65% approval from those self-identifying as Republicans is even more telling. He could have done all the Project 2025 garbage he wanted, built all the ballrooms he wanted, deported all "those people" he wanted, without losing that base support. But starting a war in the Middle East should have been an obvious bridge too far.

7

u/Vsx Sep 21 '26

They only care about the war because it is affecting gas prices. Republicans give unconditional support until their lives are significantly impacted directly and apparently 29% continue to do so anyway. It's funny to watch them go on facebook and argue either that high gas prices are a good thing or that gas prices were slightly worse under Biden. Even if that were true (it's not) being slightly better than "the worst president ever" doesn't justify support for the current admin.
