No Paywall Trump says Iran war ‘will end immediately’ after US midterm elections

According to polls, that appears to be correct.

u/AmyNotAmiable Sep 10 '26
Always has been. 35% is kind of a magic number for this. It's been remarkably consistent for as long as I have been alive.
You can always depend on a floor of 35% of people in pretty much any poll who will reliably agree with the most vile, reprehensible stuff you can imagine.

u/OYB2480 Sep 10 '26
35% is a lot of dumb/crazy people. Really terrifying, honestly.

It is basically everywhere, all of the time.
There are just too many people who:
- Don't want to think for themselves but prefer to have a 'leader' that tells them how and what.
- That are afraid and like 'leaders' who just promise to make the bad things go away.
- How think that democracy, reaching consensusses and making agreements takes too long and think that strong willed men are better 'leadership'
- Hate minorities
This is one of the reasons why for the majority of history, humanity has been rules by kings, strong men, dictators and other 'leaders'.
It was one of the scariest things to think about for me and realization when I was younger. Nazi Germany wasn't something spectacularly weird. It was just another version of this, albeit an extreme one. The Germany population didn't magically chance after the war. The war did 'help' a bit, as the more you liked the Nazi's, the more likely you died from the war (volunteer forces on the eastern front, from suicide once they lost etc). But overall, of that 30% that voted Hitler into power? Probs their ratio didn't chance much.
That sort of people are always and everywhere. With that realization, you understand why it was so important to Never forget the lessons of WWII. But we did.

u/Necessary_Finding_32 Sep 10 '26
The ‘lizard man constant’ is indeed a depressingly universal factor, but it’s generally much lower in most sane European countries (UK for example is 20-24 % and ‘sane’ is a stretch for us)

u/Bored_Amalgamation Ohio Sep 10 '26 edited Sep 10 '26
I'd argue that the US is uniquely qualified to produce more self-centered money-driven adults (per capita) than most other countries. American society is built for sociopaths, not the sane.
Edit: I'm in my late 30s, am an American male that has lived in a medium city and a major international city. My family is from rural areas and the South, while I live North. I'm racially mixed and was educated that way by my family(s). This isn't some self-hating or ignorant American making a hot take; trying to get euro reddit points. I'm making an honest statement about my country and fellow Americans as a basically average American, who was a conscious thinking person when 9/11 happened, got in to international studies and poli sci because of it and the results from it through lived experience.

Yes, but that is high constant. 24% as a base that will always for a extreme rightwing party. That same party needs to swing only a bit of less extreme voters (or make the others voters stay at home on election day), in order to win. Especially in first past the post systems like the USA or the UK has.
Here in the Netherlands we have had the same constant too. We have had a dozen new rightwing political parties coming and going in the last few decades. Some more extreme than the other. Their vote-base has been pretty consistent, those party total share has been reasonably stable.
But the voters switch between those parties very easily. This might drive the overtone window much quicker though, as it means they can reward whomever becomes the most extreme.
We might see the same now in the UK where Reform, Restore might do a race to the bottom.
For me personally another country that I had been observing about this is Russia. Where at least a quarter of the people are also just fine with Putin's doing (and half of the populace doesn't care/don't want anything to do with politics).

The difference is the billionaires are having a fucking field day right now. They can literally tell you they are working on ending the world and get cheers from the government. 60
u/whut-whut Sep 10 '26 edited Sep 10 '26
there’s no way anything changes after the midterms
But that's the goal in voting against Republicans in the midterms. So nothing -more- changes. The midterms can't reverse this adminstration because of the presidential veto, anything that a dem Congress puts up to rollback the balance will be blocked by Trump, but they can deadlock any new pro-billionaire MAGA bullshit from being started. It'll take a change in both the presidency and Congress to actually backtrack and fix this nation.
52
u/Lanah44 Sep 10 '26
If Democrats get the majority in both houses, and win most of the senate seats they easily have 2/3 of the senate to impeach AND remove the president. Especially since Mitch passed away. Vote because it matters. Vote because they wouldn't try so hard to disenfranchise us if it didn't.

Naturally, he's promising money again for the mid-terms:
"Trump said on Wednesday that his administration would pay a $5,000 “Trump Dividend” to each American adult if voters help Republicans keep their congressional majority in both houses through the 2026 midterms.
“So if the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump said of the plan during his speech at the Republican midterm convention in Texas. “It will be called the Trump Dividend.”" https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-dividend-republican-midterm-convention-texas-b3047681.html

... Anyone taking bets on how many will insist that this time he means it?
He's got to schrodingers mean it too. because if he's serious, it's a very serious crime to bribe people for votes. So they have to play it both ways in terms of "oh it's real he's not just lying or joking at our expense", but at the same time, he can't really mean it that way, so if he loses and doesn't give it, he never meant it at all, and if he wins and does give it "He'd have given it either way it's just a stimulous he had planned with all the amazing profits from the tarrifs, has nothing to do with the election", and if he wins and doesn't give it "it was a joke, no reasonable person would have believed it".

Devious plan by the right. Plan it so if the Dems win the midterms, low info voters will blame the Dems.

They did it with Iraq. Set the bill to be due in 2005, then extended it when Bush won, then in 2009 the Tea Party starting complaining about the debt and taxes while Obama was paying all the war debt at once. With interest. After Bush drained what was left of Clinton's surplus with rebate checks

A much darker interpretation of Trump's statement could be he will end the war with Iran by doing something deeply unpopular that would hurt their chances of winning the midterms even further. It seems like everything else is ready to pop off after the midterms so why not try doing something like boots on the ground?

Americans, please make sure Trump’s political career is the other thing that ends immediately after the midterms. The rest of the world is counting on you.

Even if there was some miracle and the Democrats took large enough majorities in both houses, it would still be January before they could take any action

There's always something stupid that riles up just enough people to fuck everything up, just in the nick of time.
Of course the fact that it isn't going to be a landslide in every election after the past two years is embarrassing.

Also consider that if trump had managed COVID just slightly better, he would have easily won reelection in 2020.
That's how cooked America is.

Basically not possible; the Democrats would need a minimum of 67 Senate seats and that doesn't even account for the Democrats who would not vote to convict such as Fetterman.

The dead soldiers families need to be suing the government for denying their benefits, Trump himself is admitting it's a war.

Well that settles it. I believe him this time. Glad it'll all be over soon!
preemptive edit: well it's a few weeks after the midterms and the war is still ongoing. Why would Biden do this to us?!

Did he ever send us that DOGE check, healthcare plan, or the gold from the tariffs that were making the country rich?
Because in hearing the words. Seeing no actions. Watching him lock up none of the criminally insane people he promisednwere out there, while his gestapo Kills citizens. Meanwhile, Washington DC looks worse than ever.

No. But, yes. But, it ended. We won. But, it ended when we won.
??
But it's not a war. If it was a war, it started under Obama. It's Obama's war. That Trump ended. But it's still ongoing. But we're winning(?).
I don't know man.

This is so that when the blue wave happens and the war doesn’t end immediately he has the democrats to blame.
It’s not even sneaky what he’s trying to do. MAN this guy sucks.

I think it’s not that. He’s just stupid. He knows the war isn’t popular so he’s going “vote for the GOP and I promise to stop 👉🏻👈🏻”

Have you paid attention at all since 2001? The constitution has slowly been ripped to shreds by republicans and their judges. It’s not coming back after the midterms no matter what happens

If Trump had the power to end the war, which he already claims to have ended SEVERAL times already, he'd be better served doing it BEFORE the Midterms.
Or does he think that somehow the thing allowing him to unilaterally demand bombing of a sovereign nation without congressional approval is that the GOP Margins in Congress are TOO SMALL?

Iran has said that they will not engage in negotiations and will continue the war while Trump is President.
So, I'm crossing my fingers Trump's right!

He has also promised to give every American $5,000 if Republicans win.
So it seems that his strategy is to just blatantly lie in a hail-mary attempt to not face the repercussions over completely fucking up the economy even more than it already was before he retook office.
And since I'm here, fuck the American people for voting for this fucking orange, I'm glad at least half of you lost your welfare/food stamps out of sheer ignorance.

Not unlike what happened with the Iranian Hostage Crisis during Carter/Reagan.

Officially, it isnt a war. Also officially, it was over months ago. Also also officially, theyre currently negotiating terms for a cease fire, which shouldnt be necessary bevause hes already succesfully negotiated several ceasefires, according to himself.

Then just do it now. Like even if you believed him, you got to understand that what he’s essentially saying is “I won’t help you until you help me” which is exactly what you want from your president
