When I tell people all the cool shit you could do in Dungeon Keeper in 1997, they don't even believe me. they seriously heard somebody say "man i like these top-down real time strategy games but sometimes i wish i could just GET IN THERE and take direct control of one of my dudes in first person and really fuck shit up" and they added that as a full mechanic you don't even have to use
I remember being stoked when I found a Command and Conquer Red Alart cd at a garage sale. Shit was like 4-5 years old and it was the first game my older sister and I bonded over. Very fond memories.
First game I bought for my Saturn (that I won). I played the living shit out of the game. I still have some of the audio files from the discs. They could be played like a regular CD in a CD player. You just had to skip the first track because it was the data for the game.
I was a ranked player in TibSun, parents weren't amused because the phone bill. It was a different time.
My kids are into gaming as well though it's different today. They are girls so sure they have a different preference gaming wise, but modern games are a different beast compared to what we grew up with. It's not that one is better than the other, but looking at Eggy Party or Minecraft, they are very cool but it just doesn't have the feel I had with C&C, CS1.1-1.6, Sim City2000 etc.
Mine was Populous on playstation and i loved it soo much back in the day

C&C, AoE and Blizzard's strategy games, the 90's were it.
BioWare managed to make impeccable story driven RPGs, not to mention fallout 1 and 2.
Adventure games were still a thing. The 90's certainly held up for games. They may be a bit clunky and low res, but with a bit of polish just about all of those games hold up.
As much at I loved the C&C/Red Alert games, unless Westwood planned on creating an RTS that out performed Starcraft or got into the MOBA space and won against DOTA and League; there's not a lot that they could have done especially with such a huge population of gamer's moving out of RTS and into MOBA's.
