I pre order games that I already planned on buying for the cool pre-order skin.

That skin you're gonna wear for a couple hours, then forget about the whole game a couple months later. Yet you could buy the game a year after its release for a third of its price, bug fixes and DLCs included. Life is totally different when you refuse to be manipulated by marketing tactics.

I literally just bought Atomic Heart for 10 bucks, and I can't believe some people paid 70 bucks for it, and they had the exact same experience as me. What's the point in hyping video games, they don't lose quality after time

How does one get manipulated into doing something they were going to do anyway?

They got manipulated into buying it 70 dollars instead of 10. Atomic Heart sounded interesting to me when it got announced and I knew I would buy it. Yet I chose to wait because I didn't need to buy it on release.

That just comes down to personal choice. Advertising is of course going to try and hype you up for a game you want to play. Everyone knows there will be eventual sales, so at the end of the day it's a decision if you want to wait and buy it cheaper.

It's like saying movies manipulate people by advertising a theater release. Everyone knows it could be rented or bought cheaper later, that doesn't mean seeing it at the theater is a bad decision if that's how you want to spend your time.

Objectively cheaper later, subjectively dependent on how you value your time and if you wanna play something when it releases.

That logic only works for single player games. Try waiting for year for a multiplayer game and all your friends will have gotten bored of it by the time you're playing.

Even with single player games, some people want to play them while there is still some hype and they haven't seen 100 spoilers on social media.
