If enough people care for it to spend time (or token) to improve it. I also wouldn't be surprised if this project was dead in a month from now. Open source alternatives to Adobe software isn't exactly a new concept.

Tbf, this has a lot more momentum behind it than basically any predecessor. But some may also refuse to work on it. Remains to be seen

Isn’t Pinta pretty much exactly paint.net for Linux?

I moved to Linux and I am thinking about just going with GIMP. I loved paint.net for years and years though

Then all of you will be thrilled to know that Rick Brewster has been working on WINE compatibility for it.

As much as I have loved paint.net over the years I feel like i would just rather use something that runs natively on Linux rather than running it through Wine. Still is super cool what people have done the last few years to get windows executables to run in Linux!

Depends on the project. I mostly do thumbnails (hobby content creator) and have found krita more or less meets my needs.

My main usage needs are making memes to send to my friends lol thats why paint.net was so perfect for me because it was basically paint with layers. Some other stuff comes in handy, like being able to outline objects, create gifs through agif file formatting, reasonable tooling, and of course the extensive user made plug-ins that I've used over the years.

Have you tried Krita?

I use Krita over gimp, a lot closer to photoshop style interface

GIMP is pretty good, better than photoshop for some things.

I heard there was a UI mod to make it feel like photoshop as well if that's what you're used to.

I would try it out but I'm really not using it(any image editing really) like I used to.

The very rare occasion I do, I've an old high seas version still installed so, eh...

GIMP is great it's just really clunky to use. There have been some attempts to make it more intuitive but it's still just kinda meh.

As a casual user its great. If I was a graphic designer I'd probably be super frustrated with it.

Nah, not really - it's trying to fill the same gap by being sort of "the easy to use one", but it doesn't do that in a similar enough way to really be a replacement. It's a fine enough basic image editor, but it's just not the same app. Which is a real shame, because I'd love a real Linux version!

Crashes way too easily.

use GIMP with the PhotoGIMP frontend that turns it into Photoshop.

What about photopea? I use that mostly these days.
